The Scoop OnceWas A whole lot of design talent is lined up for Melbourne Spring Fashion Week. And one of those incredible talents is Melbourne label, OnceWas. Set to showcase as part of the MSFW Hub runway program, the label will be presenting its SS15 season collections Linear and Coast. Two runways will take place on Friday September 4 at 5pm and 6pm alongside a pop-up activation in the MSFW Hub (corner Collins and Swanston St). Pioneered by designer Belinda Glynn, the latest lines will see a continuance of the new era of OnceWas (formerly SpencerLacy).

Both collections draw inspiration from strong females, pioneers and influencers of fashion, and mix this with artistic inspiration from the warmer seasons.

INGREDIENTS: BISCUITS 3/4 cup unsalted butter 3/4 cup caster sugar 1 large egg 2 tsp vanilla 1 tsp cinnamon 2 1/4 cup plain flour 1/2 tsp baking powder ICING 3 tbsp butter 5 cups icing sugar cold water red food dye pink food dye

RECIPE TABATHA TURNER

METHOD: 01.

Preheat oven to 170 degrees.

02.

Place butter and sugar in a bowl and beat with an electric mixer until light and creamy.

03.

Add egg and vanilla and beat until combined.

04.

Add flour, cinnamon and baking powder Mix until combined.

05.

Place mix between two sheets of baking paper and roll out to 1 cm thick. Place in fridge for 10-20 minutes.

06.

Cut out giant-sized love hearts. Place on baking tray and bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.

07.

Place 3 cups of icing sugar in a bowl and add water until mixture is thick and gloopy. Add pink food dye. Drip over cooled biscuits until completely covered Leave to dry.

08.

Beat remaining icing sugar and butter together in an electric mixer until white.

Add red food dye and place into a small piping bag.

09.

Pipe Iggy Azalea-inspired lyrics onto biscuits.

Rip and Shred We ripped and tore a pair of Dr Denim My Boys to create the best worn-out jeans you've ever slipped into.

DIY WITH DR DENIM

METHOD:

01. Research images of ripped jeans to help you navigate around your fresh pair.

02. After you have decided where your rips will be placed, use a pencil to mark the areas with short horizontal lines about 1.5cm apart. This will help you achieve a ‘shredded’ effect.

03. Place a piece of cardboard under the area you will be cutting.

YOU'LL NEED:

06. To achieve a ripped effect, repeat the pencil process and cut one singular line along the area you wish to be ripped. You can pull some of the horizontal white threads out to make a frayed effect, or leave them freshly cut.

07. Using a razor blade, ‘shave’ the jeans along the seams, pockets, belt tabs and hems, roughing up the jeans to get your desired effect.

A stanley knife can also be used to rip along these seams.

04. With a stanley knife, cut along the horizontal lines you have marked, then slowly start to pull the threads vertically with the body out (leaving only the white horizontal threads).

08. Put jeans in the washing machine and dryer.

This is an integral part of the process as it will roughen, fray and perfect the shreds and rips.

05. Repeat this process on all of the areas you wish to be shredded.

09. Wear the jeans, rock the jeans, be the jeans.

They will only get better with age!

Creative Collective Melbourne Spring Fashion Week is all about showcasing the best our local designers have to offer.

At the heart of this year’s festival is Creative Collective, a week-long exhibition and marketplace which will act as a hub for all things home-grown design. Not only will Creative Collective exhibit to the public, there will also be a series of workshops for emerging designers and retailers held by some of Melbourne’s industry leaders. Melbourne favourites Habbot, Pageant, Limedrop and AMXander will all be exhibiting, so we decided to pick their minds to get an insight into their upcoming showcases.

Name of your SS16 collection? It is simply SS16. I stopped naming my collections a little while ago.

I like to let the audience make up their own mind about my collections.

Sum up your collection three words: Light, flowing, fun.

Inspiration behind your current collection? We have taken a modern look at '70s free flowing silhouettes and made lots of mix-and-match pieces that can fit into any wardrobe.

The best thing about being a designer in Melbourne? I love the abundance of good coffee and cool weather to wear lots of clothes.

What’s unique about your label? Limedrop is all about FUN and believing anything is possible.

We take an upbeat approach to design while focusing on precision in all the details.

Favourite Melbourne retailer or place to shop? I am a fan of A-Esque leather bags and accessories.

Amanda Briskin designs fun pieces that are handcrafted in their Melbourne workshop.

I respect the mix of playfulness and amazing quality.

Favourite thing about Melbourne culture? The idea that Melburnians embrace their own style.

The confidence to wear what looks good and style it into your own wardrobe.

What’s unique about your label? Pageant is known for pushing the boundaries through our use of unusual fabrication, colour palette and broad pop culture references.

Favourite place to shop? Mr Kitly, Monk House Design, World Food Books, Dot Comme and Shifting Worlds.

Is there anything unique to Melbourne culture that you channel into your designs? The music and art scenes here are very influential to our design process. We always reference a mix of the ‘everyday’ and our collection encompasses a genuine expression of our interests and obsessions at the present moment.

Name of your SS16 collection? Suitcase.

Sum up your collection three words: Take a trip.

Describe your current collection: It’s about taking a step away from the everyday and into a more colourful, fun and free space. The styles are classic yet the materials unexpected which is typical of Habbot. It also reminds us that the most unexpected experiences often bring the greatest pleasure.

What’s unique about your label? The materials I make my shoes from are generally reserved for small borders or trims on shoes, but I love going all out and using them as the main event.

Favourite place to shop? At the moment I am finding myself in Bassike, Cos and Limedrop (for crazy socks), all pointing down to a big, bold, happy shoe ending!

Is there anything unique to Melbourne culture that you channel into your designs? I think Melburnians generally love good tailoring, so I pay a lot of attention to the small details when designing my shoes. Even though I love to make unexpected material choices, the shoes need to be finished really well.

Sum up your collection in three words: Texture, rebellious, embroidery.

Inspiration behind your current collection?

Defying classic sartorial styles and rebellious shifts in menswear of the '60s, the counterculture era otherwise known as the Peacock Revolution.

The best thing about being a designer in Melbourne? Being able to work and exchange experiences with people from all over the world.

What is unique about your label? Being a contemporary menswear label here in Melbourne.

There are not many local labels that do what we do. We are a breath of fresh air, especially in the menswear field.

Is there anything unique to Melbourne culture that you channel into your designs? Melbourne exhibits strong Scandinavian sensibilities in its style DNA. It’s hard not to integrate this into what I do as I have a strong love for our multicultural city. Some people have said that my work looks like ‘clean’ streetwear and I can see how this is influenced by my direct surroundings.

Who is your style icon?

There are a range of people I look up to when it comes to style, including male model Park Sung Jin and music producer turned style icon Pharrell Williams. amxander.com

Shooting Hoops It’s clear The Rubens are men of action. With over 120 shows under their belt, they have just kicked off their mammoth 22-show national tour with Splendour in the Grass. Regardless of their impressive tour roster, they still get their fair share of pre-show jitters and nerves.

“I’m nervous talking about it,” admits Sam. “We’ve got a whole lot of songs we haven’t played in front of people now, so it’s like we’ve got to really go back and do it all again. And better.”

Although daunted, The Rubens do not subscribe to superstitious pre-show rituals or lucky charms.

These guys opt for a good dose of boozy lubrication and brotherly love. “Before we go on, we do a group huddle and give a kiss on the cheek around the circle.”

The shows will feature a new look and polished feel for the band. Self-described as somewhere between Tame Impala’s casual ‘undoneness’ and the Arctic Monkey's sharp tailored aesthetic, The Rubens promise a cohesive, sleek and thematic show based on their luxe album art.

From Menangle to Manhattan, The Rubens have an origin story worthy of a rock‘n’roll fairytale. Inspired by their parents' formidable record collection, and the sheer boredom of their post-high school sojourn, the Margin brothers and friend Scott Baldwin decided to start a band.

Four years on, the unsuspecting lads experienced domestic and international success with their certified platinum self-titled debut. It saw them team up with legendary New York producer David Kahne (Paul McCartney, The Strokes, Lana Del Rey).

Despite some time out of the spotlight, the quintet has returned with a vengeance. Their sophomore album, Hoops, is out this month and boasts the bluesy, soulful, stamp-your-feet brand of rock‘n’roll we have come to expect from The Rubens. Brimming with maturity and innovation, their sound has undergone an evolution of sorts during the last three years and showcases a marked understanding of their strengths.

“We haven’t gone and overcomplicated things on this record,” muses Sam Margin. “It’s still condensed and still heavily structured but we just made a point of writing more to our strengths. Trying to make each song more interesting by adding different parts and elements.”

As purveyors of charismatic, confident and soulful rock‘n’roll, The Rubens’ Hoops tour is guaranteed to deliver timeless rock anthems.

As for who they would shoot one-on-one hoops with? After some deliberation between Shaquille O’Neal for his role in ’90s classic, Shazaam, to Danny DeVito for his height and humour, Sam and Elliott agreed that US President Obama would be their choice candidate. “It would be awesome if he dunked over you and he did something cool!

Lets go with Obama!”

“I think it's laziness,” the brothers agree. “I guess it seems to me that romance is almost dead thanks to that. There’s nothing romantic about [meeting online] in my own opinion. But Tinder, being aimed at young people... it seems like people need to go out and realise what the game is about before they start doing that. If you’re 18 years old and all you know is Tinder then you will have no game!”

Elliott adds, “I cant imagine kids from our area, that were groomed on Tinder, trying to have some sort of conversation in some kind of normal relationship setting. It builds character getting turned down and you can’t just keep swiping on people in real life.”

Girl Talk Elliphant (Ellinor Olovsdotter from Sweden) and MØ (Karen Marie Ørsted from Denmark) kicked some serious goals at Splendour in the Grass. We sat down with them to talk Spice Girls, Eurovision, local music scenes and overmedication.

How did you guys become friends and collaborate for ‘One More’?

Elliphant: We met on Facebook first. I read so much about her and when I saw her ‘Pilgrim’ video I was like, “I fucking love that girl!” We realised we had the same booker and video director. It just morphed and everything got great. I never met her in Denmark.

MØ: No and I don’t think I met you in Sweden.

We met in LA and London and just different places. I feel very close to you even if we don’t see each other that much. Elli sent me the ‘One More’ track that she did with Joel Little and I recorded my vocals. I was so keen on the song.

Elliphant: She sent it back in two days.

So professional.

You’re both Scandinavian artists that sing in English. Why? Elliphant: Sweden has a pop history of Englishspeaking bands like ABBA and Ace of Base but if you really want to earn money in Sweden, you should sing in Swedish. The Swedish music scene is huge, especially soul and hip-hop.

MØ: It’s the same in Denmark. They pay you shitloads of money for tours. I started writing songs in English because of the Spice Girls. They were my first crush. I’ve been in a punk band and we sung in Danish but I write my own songs in English. It’s just natural.

Elliphant: I don’t know how to express myself in Swedish. It’s weird. My singing isn’t 100 per cent English either. It’s inspired by the Swedish language, Jamaican Patois and the American hip-hop scene. It doesn’t have to be grammatically correct. I really want to be provocative with language. You can deliver a very dusty, boring word in a very creative way. For example, “love”. How boring is that fucking word?

MØ: But you can make it amazing or you can spoil it.

How do you feel about Eurovision?

Elliphant: Sweden wins it every time. It used to be cool when you had to sing in your national language but now it’s just about making really shitty EDM music. The whole idea is to bring Europe together with music though, which is nice.

MØ :It doesn’t have the same glamour.

Favourite Spice Girl?

Elliphant: Sporty Spice of course! I called her Junkie Spice. I don’t know why... But I was never that interested in the Spice Girls. I was more into TLC. But it was a genius concept.

MØ Yeah with all the characters! I liked Ginger Spice. The reason I liked Geri was because I didn’t have boobs at the time and she had big boobs!

During your set at Splendour, you started talking about ADD and overmedication.

What were you referring to?

Elliphant: I was diagnosed with attention deficit disorder (ADD) and everything else imaginable when I was 19. I finished school in the eighth grade so I don’t have any degrees. Right now we are feeding kids drugs so early because they’re supposed to sit still in school. If I take pills, I get high as fuck.

What advice would you give your younger self?

MØ: Try to believe in yourself a bit more and be confident. But that’s something that comes with age. You just want to fit in when you’re young but embrace your flaws.

Hello, Hello We hate to state the obvious, but there was a pretty stellar line-up at this year’s Splendour in the Grass. Between international heavyweights and long-time local favourites, an emerging crop of fresh talent left us seriously impressed. So we decided to pull a few of our fave cool kids from the Red Bull Music Academy line-up for a chat.

As if it’s not already enough pressure to avoid an embarrassing sex face during the act, now you have to look perfectly tousled post coitus? I have a sneaking suspicion I can apply the ‘people who take photos’ wisdom here too. What a second-round boner killer.

No, FYI, the fame doesn’t rub off on you when you get a selfie with a Big Brother starlet. That stench of desperation that you have, however, does rub off onto your photo feed.

Ugh. It is one thing to be excited about an upgrade and post about said upgrade. In this case, post 100x *excited face* with free champers. And free sandwiches. And extra leg room. And smiling flight attendants. It’s quite another thing to pretend you’re totes chill as you ‘accidentally’ highlight your seat number while posing with your (real) glass of sparkles. As many a rich person has said before, people who always fly business class don’t take photos of themselves flying business class.

elfies. Love ’em or hate ’em, they’re fast becoming the cornerstone of our virtual lives ± but does the selfie really spell the downfall of polite culture? I say yes. And I’m not even over 35.

Don’t believe me? Well, not only has science now definitively proven that selfies are the absolute worst, but in a more accurate and science-y way, they have linked a higher rate of selfies to narcissism and psychopathy. Yep, that’s right. Every selfie you post takes you one step closer to Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct. Crotch selfie imminent...

And anyway, you’ll never out-selfie the selfie master Kim K, so what’s the point? She’s made a cool wad of cash selling a hard cover version of her Instagram feed. The Bookseller’s features editor Tom Tivnan said the book was “landmark publishing, a cultural touchstone, the Catcher in the Rye of the Instagram generation.”

If you didn’t agree with me before, surely you have to now. This is the sheer downfall of humankind, summed up in a single sentence.

To prove my point, let’s investigate some of the most popular and often talked about selfie categories that our appalling generation has spawned… And why they up the #ew factor.

The homeless-person selfie There are two types that fall into this category and I can’t work out which one is more evil. There’s THAT guy, who thinks it’s funny to be all like ‘LOL, look at this homeless person.’ In this case, I hope they end up there someday too and the homeless guy recognises them. But perhaps even worse, there’s the type that gives a homeless person a couple of bucks and wants to #humblebrag about how they helped someone. Word of advice: it’s not charity if you have to prove to the world you’re doing it.

Still an advocate of the selfie? Still think it’s an amazing way to share your experiences with the world around you?

Girl, you can’t deny this overwhelming flood of evidence to the contrary. Selfies aren’t just incredibly un-chill, they are an embarrassing blight on the historical account of peeps in the 21st Century.

We’re totally going to regret those #sexselfies in 100 years time when historians are all like ‘gross’.

Fashion history is never quite as easy to digest as when it's in picture book format. And so the complex history of Coco Chanel comes best delivered as a children’s book. Coco and the Little Black Dress is a kidfriendly biography about the life and transformative origins of legendary designer, Coco Chanel. It follows her childhood living in an orphanage, her design inspiration and how her ability to challenge trends led to a legacy. Each page is beautifully illustrated and like all children's books, the moral of the story is evident. It also teaches Chanel’s value in the importance of comfort and the beauty of simplicity. Cute.

There’s no doubt David Downton is one of the world’s best fashion illustrators of all time. Cementing his reputation for over a decade, Downton is renowned for his ability to capture a woman’s beauty in just a few careful strokes. It’s actually quite incredible. So bringing his works together in a single hard-cover book just screams 'bestseller'. Portraits of the World’s Most Stylish Women exhibits some of Downton’s best work. Subjects range from the new school of Victoria’s Secret Angels to industry greats such as Jerry Hall, Amanda Harlech and Joan Collins, and are accompanied by little insights into most meetings.

More than just visually captivating, it also guarantees a good read.

They say don’t judge a book by its cover, but it’s kind of hard not to when the book is about photography.

Or anything visual really. So it’s lucky that Read This if You Want to Take Great Photographs of People passes this test. Because what lies inside is gold. As its name so subtly suggests, the book helps guide you through what it takes to snap really good photos of people.

Turns out it’s less about the hard-and-fast rules of photography and more about mood, personality and gut feeling. Which is really a blessing for the less technical of us whose portraits rely on iPhone cameras and Instagram. Say 'cheese'.

There's a certain dizzy dreaminess to Beach House's music that you just can't seem to find anywhere else. Like a soundtrack to a Lynch film, it's part nostalgic and part surreal. This is a real 'back to basics' album for the band, toning down the live drums and layered riffs of their previous records, focusing instead on the songwriting and melodies.

Despite not re-inventing the wheel, the best tracks here mix the familiar keyboard drones and rippling guitar lines with subtle electronic flourishes. The looping distorting vocals on lead single ‘Sparks’ and the reverb-drenched choir that opens 'Days Of Candy' stand out immediately. Depression Cherry is a melancholy and bittersweet record that will stay with you long after it's finished spinning.

Little Boots really is pop's true underdog. She was practically ignored and dropped by her label with her debut album Hands, but had the drive to start her own label, now she's back with her third record and her strongest effort yet. Musically, Working Girl pulls a huge number of references from ’90s dance, house and pop, to the point where it might turn some off.

The album works best when it plays up a detached coolness. ‘Taste It’ and ‘Better in the Morning’ being the best of the bunch. A few of the tracks, however, do struggle under the weight of the production, with Boots’ vocals not quite strong enough to pull it off. Still, if you're a fan of power suits, pastels and voguing, Working Girl is totally on point.

Robyn has always pushed the boundaries of commercial pop and her newest EP release is no different. La Bagatelle Magique is actually a collaboration between Robyn, Christian Falk and her keyboardist Markus Jägerstedt.

Love is Free is a celebration of dance music and its many forms. The EP finds Robyn and Co firmly in rave o’clock territory and there’s a carefree attitude to it all. Opener 'Lose Control' is the closest you’ll get to classic Robyn here, but it’s the stomping title track that steals the show. It’s basically a five minute rollercoaster ride through the ’90s rave scene, cow bells and 808’s galore. While 'Tell You (Today)' literally sounds like four different songs chucked into a blender and then thrown at a wall, it all somehow works.

Out & About Levi's Sunset BBQ at Splendour in the Grass

Sadly, not all of us could attend this year’s Splendour in the Grass. And out of those who nabbed tickets, even fewer made it to, the Levi’s Sunset BBQ Party, (probably because it was a secret). Day two saw Splendour’s infamous Tackle Shack play host to industry reps, media, VIPs and artists from the line-up for a private sunset party. If that’s not enough, there was also an intimate performance from Liverpool three-piece, The Wombats.
