When I first ventured into the Spa world (never to return!), two of the first people I met were Wayne Cross and Chris Malden. You would be hard-pressed to meet two more passionate guys! They have succeeded in bringing some of the world’s best Spa concepts to a little place in rural Victoria, Australia. That little place is Hepburn Springs, and thanks partly to Chris and Wayne, it is now Australia’s Spa Mecca. If you ask the question: how did two unlikely lads from the big smoke turn their hands to Spa, they will be honest in their answer: they were actually in the business of buying and renovating old properties (Wayne was originally a builder) and were in need of a change and a new challenge, so they bought a 1930s art deco guesthouse - complete with local pub - in Hepburn Springs, an easy two hour’s drive from Melbourne. One of the things they soon learned was that the rooms above the pub were hard to let to guests due to the noise coming up from the pub. They hadn’t banked on this as part of their business plan - what a nightmare! Astute businessmen, they started looking at ways to make use of the space during the day to generate the income that was lost to them at night. They opted to use the rooms as a Day Spa… and things happened from there. The Spa became so popular it out-grew the rooms above the pub, so Wayne and Chris set about constructing a purpose-built, state-of-the art,

eco-friendly Spa behind the main guesthouse. This new Spa, they didn’t stumble upon… rather, they developed a well-planned and researched facility offering world-class treatments, while also using the local natural Hepburn mineral water to create their multi-award-winning, aptly-named Mineral Spa. Their journey goes beyond this Spa. Wayne and Chris have taken up organic farming and their produce is used in their restaurant, deco, and their jams and preserved fruits are likely to be homegrown and home-made. They now employ more people than anyone else in the area and have created an online booking portal, Daylseford Getaways, to help promote properties in the Daylesford area and attract more visitors. www.dayget.com.au They have achieved a lot in their five years at Hepburn Springs, yet I sense they have only scratched the surface. They are two humble, generous and hard-working guys who are not afraid to have a go. I am reminded of a quote that goes along the lines of: ‘Your worst nightmare may actually be your dream come true’. A little inspiration certainly goes a long way!

Editor’s Pick I’m a sucker for exquisite design and the New Majestic Hotel in Singapore is a classic example of marrying a destination’s colonial past with daring new design. Set in a quiet shophouse-lined street in Chinatown, the 1920s building seems understated in elegance from the outside, but you will be blown away by the individuality and intimacy of the interior. With rooms designed by the city’s biggest creative names, new Asia never looked so inspirational or sexy.

“How beautiful it is to do nothing and then rest afterwards,” reads the Spanish proverb on the Do Not Disturb sign dangling from my suite’s door knob. Oh what perfect words to exactly describe my thoughts as I lounge back into the Zero Gravity position, cocooned in a thick, white Marco Polo dressing gown on soft, white Egyptian sheets on my space age bed at the Hunter Valley’s squeaky new and very chic Spa Resort, Chateau Élan. Zero Gravity is one of the buttons you press on the bed’s remote control to shift position for you. Yes, the mattress moves to fit your body, raising your head, bending your knees, all while you sip a morning cup of tea while watching the sun rise over the green fairways of the golf course. (Just one tricky question: if you’re here as a couple, who gets control of the remote?) Actually, Chateau Élan is very couple-friendly and has lots on offer for the guys, including an 18-hole championship golf course, which is home to the new Spa, of course. Men are most welcome here, as Spa Manager Chontelle explains: “We want to dispel the myth that our male guests do ‘man things’ and our female guests do ‘women things’. Couples treatments are really popular and our golfers find pre-game and post-game remedial massage extremely beneficial.” (Think Balinese palming and Tibetan hot stone massage, among others). The Spa matches this sort of future thinking with its state-of-the-art appointments ($40 million worth)

and, when it comes to treatments, pre and post golfing massages are just the beginning. There are 17 treatment rooms where a long list of Thalgo spa therapies and Terraké rituals take place. Chateau Élan is the first Spa in Australia where guests can enjoy the French Tarraké products in their spa journey. This might involve mother of pearl exfoliation, a dip in a geisha tub for a moisturising marine bath, light therapy and the use of rain sticks in the massage treatment. Then there is a hydro lounge with adjoining hot spa and cold plunge pool overlooking the golf course, an infrared Detox Box where 20 minutes promises a cleanse of any earlier wine tasting indulgences in the nearby vinyards. Each king room is named after a different city and has little unique touches to suit. Our room is ‘Atlanta’ and has rhythm and blues CDs and a coffee table book on the city. ‘Sydney’ is just next door... East Day Spa Rialto Intercontinental, Melbourne The sweet scent of orange, frangipani and sandalwood greets you at the entrance of the Intercontinental’s swish new Day Spa. Pop in the side door from the chaos of Collins Street and be enveloped in a world of calm and peace that is East Day Spa. The super-modern space neatly tucked down a laneway is white and bright, with Balinese, Indian and other Oriental touches: dark wood, glowing candle light and therapies based on exotic healing therapies. “We’ve established a strong reputation at our Spas in Bali, Auckland and Wellington for authentic, Eastern-style massages and luxury beauty treatments. We are very excited to bring our unique blend of ancient healing therapies and modern Spa treatments to Melbourne. We felt this was an ideal fit for us, as we continue to expand in the Asia-Pacific region,” says Ina Bajaj, East Day Spa co-director. Hot on the treatment list is the Sand and Stone Therapy. This uses hot sandbags as heat packs, which make you instantly surrender to the next 75 minutes of bliss. This treatment also uses smooth, gently heated river stones, which are said to promote energy and rejuvenate the body. Also not to be missed is the Indian eye treatment, which uses ghee (Indian butter) and dough to bring down puffiness around the eyes. Spa tip: Ask for Rita, a Mauritian therapist whose massage and back-cracking talents are second to none!

in brief...

A diary entry from an entirely new demographic by Maryanne Gale If you are over 45 years old (only by a smidge, of course), have given birth to a small tribe, work full-time, coach the kid’s sporting team, have the pleasure of caring for an elderly family member and believe that serving on less than two voluntary committees is slacking off… well, have I got a revelation for you! The fundraiser BBQ on Sunday will sizzle without you, the family will enjoy (no, delight in!) a takeaway meal, the bathroom, although not cleaned for ages, is still safe from the outbreak of a notifiable disease, and number four son will revel in the fact that you’re not his golf partner this weekend. You are not indispensable. Taking a little time for yourself will not land you on the Most Wanted list of the Department of Community Services. If this sounds like you and you need a getaway, read on…

THE SELF RITUAL It has been said that: “We spend the first half of our lives sacrificing our health to gain wealth, and the second half sacrificing our wealth to gain health.” That statement reflects the lack of balance many of us have in our lives and the need to strive for greater balance, whatever stage of life we are at. For most of us, our time is dedicated to careers, families and various obligations, so it’s all too easy to become depleted, fatigued and suffer from the effects of ill health. Health should be our main priority, so we can give our best to our loved ones and our careers. Just a few simple rituals can help achieve a balanced and calm state of being. Take time for yourself; remember pampering yourself is not an indulgent act, rather it is a nurturing ritual with many health benefits. Treatments at Gaia Day Spa are designed to be both deeply relaxing and therapeutic. Each treatment is tailored to cocoon you and take you into a blissful state, while releasing tension, moving stagnated energy and assisting detoxification. Gaia’s signature Body Polish treatment is experienced in a Turkish-style steam room. This is a wonderful treatment working with the lymphatic system to deeply cleanse and detoxify the body. A treatment at Gaia offers a complete mind-bodyspirit experience. From the moment you set foot in the sub-tropical rainforest, you will be lulled by the blissful tranquility of the singing birds and the wind in the leaves. Plunge into the outdoor spa or heated pool to relax before your treatment. www.gaiaretreat.com.au

The Tranquility Spa Resort located within the picturesque Novotel Pacific Bay Resort in Coffs Harbour - with its secret weapon, the flotation tank - could be just the ticket. This is my maiden Spa voyage and my initial thought as I settle into the comfortable surrounds is: how long has this absolute luxury been going on? The staff at the retreat are only too pleased to, well, please. For my facial, I am asked what my main requirement is (as if it’s not immediately evident) and we agree the Intense Moisture Facial is most suitable. My skin literally laps up the major replenishment of moisture, which has a visibly smoothing effect. The Thalgo products the therapist uses are rich in mineral extracts, natural fruit and marine acids, leaving my skin luxuriantly supple for days. Next on the agenda is a full-body massage. This is not some half-hearted attempt to reach the depths of my muscle tissue (and for this maiden voyager, that’s no mean feat!), but a vigorous and intense manipulation that leaves me in a state of bliss. While my face mask was left on to dissolve away wrinkles, I had to decide whether I preferred a head, hand or foot massage. Oh, such a tough decision! Head massage for me, thank you. So I have learned that you don’t have to be under 40, look like Elle McPherson or be on the Fortune 100 Richest People list to partake in an experience akin to reaching nirvana, heaven, paradise and Melbourne’s Bourke Street Mall all rolled into one. I can already hear a chorus of “But I don’t have time” or “Our money could be put to better use.” But please consider yourself worthy – we are a valuable resource and deserving of much pampering! Plunge into a thermal spa and get up to your neck in hot water in the North Island or float in an infinity pool in South Island. This is Spa country!

www.spalife.com.au

New Zealand is one of the world’s greatest natural attractions, with crystal-clear waters, breathtaking coastlines, pristine beaches, gorgeous rivers, spectacular mountains and sparkling lakes. Here, water therapy is used a lot in Spa treatments. Steam drifts naturally from the landscape and lakes are coloured deep jewel hues with minerals from the depths of the earth. These geothermal environments form hot springs and natural spas, and there are plenty of opportunities to bathe in steamy mineral baths and thermal pools. Here’s just a few of the best Spa retreats and escapes:

Delamore Lodge You can arrive at this cliff-top retreat by helicopter and spy a shot of the blue infinity pool with a bird’s eye view (if your budget extends that far), otherwise Waiheke is a quick ferry hop from Auckland. Indulgence is very much on the menu at Delamore Lodge, which is as much about the food and kicking back on your private balcony with amazing views as the Spa experience. Imagine substantial canapes of grilled fish and lamb skewers at cocktail hour enjoyed with fellow guests, fourcourse degustation dinners and breakfasts for two with an array of fresh fruit, juices, bircher museli, bacon and pancakes that could easily feed a whole family cooked by super chef Aaron Smith. The villa with textured walls, outdoor fireplace and pretty courtyard with rockpool also has a huge indoor whirlpool. The separate candlelit treatment room is

built into the cliff side and the property overlooks the turquoise waters of Owhanake Bay. (This is best viewed while floating in the infinity pool). The Spa treatments are offered on a tailor-made basis. The menu includes facials, salt scrubs, mani-pedis, massage or any combination thereof. Our pick is the massage using heated and chilled rocks. The Waiheke islanders are famous for their massage techniques and Hawaiian Lomi Lomi is popular here. Start with a sauna and a swirl around in the frothy, warm waters of the jacuzzi. Relax to soft jazzy strains. Check in on time so as not to miss a minute of this spa paradise!

Kauri Cliffs, Bay Of Islands Dive into the crystal clear infinity pool at Kauri Cliffs and enjoy the panoramic views of the dramatic islands and inlets of New Zealand’s Bay of Islands, before switching temperatures and relaxing back into the warm, swirling waters of a hot tub. This place has luxury on the label and does not disappoint! It starts at the grand white entrance gates, guarded by a lone wild goat, where your arrival is announced via intercom, even though there’s nothing else around for miles. A short drive down a track to the impressive lodge and its coastal backdrop and a porter in crisp whites rushes to transport your luggage to one of the luxe villas, complete with log fireplace flanked by squishy, cushioned chaise longues, and mini bar with delicious home-baked macadamia cookies and fruit platter. The cottages are airy and bright, lightly scented with fresh lilies on the armoire. A small verandah with wooden deck has just enough room for two lounges and a view out to sea and Cape Brett through native rainforest - perfect for peaceful moments over your morning coffee. Kauri Cliffs is definitely on the recommended list for a romantic escape. Three hours north of Auckland, on the east coast, the retreat effortlessly blends Kiwi home comforts with classy, beyond five-star luxury. The white, Hamptons-style guest house with its ivory walls and dark wooden antiques perches atop the cliffs above Keri Keri amid the manicured greens of its spectacular golf course. The deck restaurant boasts the best views, where hot and cold nibbly canapés, cocktails and champagne

www.spalife.com.au

are served by candlelight at 6pm, followed by several gourmet courses of top-class cuisine conjured up by the Executive Chef, Barry Frith. Best of all is the stunning Spa. Ah, the Spa! World class in its features and lemon grassscented treatment areas. Although the ‘men at golf while ladies frequent the Spa’ concept is a clever one, my partner chose to swap time on the green for a full body massage. One and a half hours of aromatherapy and a Hole in One Sports Massage (chosen from the more manly-looking options on the male grooming treatment menu) had my at first slightly anxious friend emerge looking spectacularly chilled out. The new spa convert, pads happily through to the relaxation area in robe and slippers looking like a true connoisseur, cup of herbal tea in hand. “It was really good to relax my muscles after too much training in the gym,” he explained. Promising me he didn’t chat too much to the therapist who had overcome his initial nervousness with expert deep tissue techniques to leave his frayed city job nerves soothed and previously tense shoulders relaxed. The Spa is set in a leafy hollow among the rainforest gardens of Totara Forest, overlooking verdant ferns and a winding, gurgling stream which trickles down to a small pond covered in lush water lilies. Dark wicker armchairs and large day beds strewn with pale green cushions invite you into rooms with floor-to-ceiling window doors, which open onto patio areas, extending the treatment room to an outside space with fireplace. Apart from the 100-foot swimming pool, a gym full of the latest equipment, a steam room and sauna, the list of treatments is long and includes 10 different types of massage therapy. Top of my list, however, are the water therapies, from shell and ocean therapy massage to the body treatments including vichy shower. In the end I plump for the thermal water therapy treatment. The two-hour session starts with a relaxing full body waterfall massage. Excess oil is towelled off and the therapist arranges my tired limbs on the Vichy table. Warm jets then drench my body, creating the sensation of lying naked in warm rain. Peace descends and soon my busy mind is quieted with sounds of splashing water and bird song, the feeling of warm suds flowing over my body and the touch of the therapist deeply massaging tight muscles. As the water quietly drains away, I am enveloped in warm towels and my skin is soothed with a thick slathering of Decleor cream.

Time has quickly melted away. Moisturised, deeply relaxed and satisfied, I retreat to the calm of the relaxation area for some mint-infused water. If you really have to leave your Zen-like state and get more active, there is a range of activities including tennis, mountain biking and sea kayaking. Or simply take in the spectacular scenery with guided bird watching and nature walks - discover secret waterfalls and explore the amazing Pink Shell Beach, a cosy cove covered in tiny shells in shades of pink, with impressive volcanic islands rising from the ocean. (The Spa even offers a Pink Shell Beach Pedicure, using tiny shells from the beach for a luxury foot treatment). Kauri Cliffs is exquisite, offering the sort of stay you’ll never forget, and is spot on for bliss seekers. Blanket Bay The road to Blanket Bay hugs the coast of Lake Wakatipu, flanked on either side by towering, snowcapped mountains. And this isn’t even the scenic part of the country for which New Zealand is famous! That’s over the mountains. Blanket Bay Lodge sits on the waterfront at the northern end of the lake, about 40 minutes drive from Queenstown. A gravel driveway winds past chalets to the grand main building, where the walls are decorated with countless artworks depicting the surrounding landscape. A large reindeer head hangs imposingly above the gorgeous fireplace in the Great Room. My chalet also has a fireplace, as well as floorto-ceiling picture window overlooking the lake and surrounding mountains, goose-down doona and Italian, triple-stitch sheets. The shower even doubles as a steam room. Dinner each night is a five-course affair which starts with canapés in the bar. The dinner menu here changes daily and includes such delights as lobster, venison and rack of lamb. However, if that’s not good enough you can, within reason, order whatever you like and the chef will endeavour “The range of scenery we pass is to prepare it for you. Not many people leave hard to comprehend” New Zealand complaining about having lost weight! After dinner, I sink into my enormous bed and slip into a deep sleep. Even though I’m on Sydney time, I manage to sleep through breakfast, but I’m served Eggs Benedict and fruit salad anyway as I prepare myself for the day’s activities. A jet boat arrives at the jetty to pick me up. I’m handed a packed lunch and we head off up the river through Middle Earth. The scenery is truly breathtaking, which sounds cliched, but really, it is! And my photographic skills (or vocabulary, for that matter) cannot do it justice. We jet up the Dart River in water which is sometimes only 10 centimetres deep. This is a glacial river and it braids downhill in criss-crossing streams which we navigate at breakneck speeds. Where the river starts to narrow as it heads up the mountain we hop out for a stroll through the Elvan forest. It’s greener than you can imagine, with moss covering everything in sight, shaded by enormous birth trees. The water in the stream is turquoise and crystal clear, making it easy to spot the enormous trout swimming casually by. The view from the top is spectacular and the

20 SPA LIFE

atmosphere incredibly peaceful. The only noise is from the breeze and the many bubbling creeks making their way down the mountain. The afternoon provides spectacular views from an alternative vantage point - a helicopter! My ride picks me up from the front lawn and we go on a tour over the mountain ranges in search of waterfalls and frozen lakes. The range of scenery we pass is hard to comprehend. We fly through clouds and an alpine range of peaks and valleys before rounding the corner into Fiordland. Milford Sound is awe-inspring; it is difficult to get a sense of scale, the mountains are so steep and high, rising from tropical-looking waters. We pass countless waterfalls before heading out to sea and along the coast, landing on the pink volcanic sand of a nearby beach before heading back into the mountains to land on a frozen lake. My last day is spent exploring Queenstown. There are two fantastic Day Spas here that Blanket Bay recommend to guests and can be included in a helishopping day trip. LeSpa at Sofitel draws on French and local influences, offering both signature and traditional treatments, including the Traditional Maori Ritual and the Ataahua treatment, which combines Rotorua geo-thermal mud for exfoliation, full body massage and a body wrap. Also on offer is the Greenstone massage using Pounamu greenstones, believed to possess healing powers, and a ‘post-mountain relaxation’ service. Also recommended is Hush Spa, which offers a wide range of full body treatments, facials, hand, foot and nail care, massage and make-up services. Blanket Bay offers a luxury wellness retreat that is genuinely unlike any other. The solitude and restful atmosphere, together with magnificent scenery and gourmet menu, leave you truly refreshed, rejuvenated and spoiled. Before heading to the airport, lunch is served at Amisfield Winery, where it is suggested we choose the ‘Trust the Chef’ option. Available for two or more people, you are served a four-course meal at the chef’s discretion. You can also sample the local wine; the Amisfield Pinot Gris is a multi-award winner and a lovely little drop it is too! Blanket Bay PO Box 35, Glenorchy 9350 Phone +64 3 442 9442

Peppers on the Point

A welcoming cup of Manuka tea warms you up to a visit of the spectacular lunar landscape of geysers and steaming pools and mud baths and boiling waterfalls that is Hell’s Gate, so named by Sir George Bernard Shaw when he was adopted by the Maori tribe who have interacted with the geothermal land and run the national park and active volcanic area for over 700 years. Sir George thought the place reminded him of the gateway to hell, as flame balls sometimes erupt from the ground. The mineral water and mud from here is processed and channelled into bathing pools and beauty products used in the Waiora Spa. Manuka honey, which is high in antioxidants and has great cleansing, healing and antibiotic qualities, is also used here in Spa treatments. In fact, locals refer to a UMF, or Unique Manuka Factor! The sulphur found in the mud used in the Spa treatments is good for cleansing the pores of your skin. It contains clay bentonite, which absorbs oils from your skin. The Spa offers facials and wraps and, for the ultimate experience, a dip in a mud bath, followed by exfoliation and massage - a real back-to-nature experience.

Surrounded by breathtaking views of sparkling Rotorua Lake is Peppers on the Point. Claims to fame include a recent royal visit from Prince Andrew, who enjoyed the utter peace and exclusivity of the resort. Enjoy the sweeping panoramic views from the suites with spa baths, or the self-contained cottages or the private villa. There is even a small chapel if getting hitched is on your horizon. A converted 1930s family estate, this resort is more house than hotel in feel, and the best part about staying here is definitely the welcoming atmosphere. When I arrived, I was greeted by a lolloping dog and a real family-style welcome, before sitting down by a roaring log fire and enjoying a fantastic breakfast served in the serenity of the sunroom. The Spa rooms have double treatment beds, showers and are bright and airy. The Maori therapists create treatments using local mud and manuka honey, making their own scrubs and infusing special blends of oils. The volcanic mud wrap is the Spa’s signature treatment and leaves your skin feeling silky smooth, while the reflexology treatments leave you walking on air.

Mii Spa Sebel, Cairns

Sea Temple
Resort & Spa, Port Douglas

Review: Mindy Cook No longer simply the stop-over town en route to Port Douglas and the Daintree, Cairns oozes a vibrant and friendly charm as a stand-alone tourist hotspot. The cafés, restaurants and live music venues rival the best. Reef Tours, fishing and dive boats offer the full range of aquatic activities. The Sebel Cairns has an elegant colonial appeal. In the lobby, towering arched windows dwarf the potted palms framing them. Doric columns stretch skyward as cool air circulates through this lofty space providing instant relief from the tropical conditions. I breathe in the harmonious ambience created by a fusion of soft, earthy hues at the Mii Spa and look longingly at the white, egg-shaped Spa bath for two. My two-hour medley, using the beautiful Pevonia product range, includes a full-body salt glow exfoliation, a lingering shower in the private outdoor courtyard garden, followed by a relaxation massage, all culminating in an aroma facial and hand treatment. My therapist has an impeccable sense of timing throughout, striking a nice balance between talking me through the treatments and product choice, allowing me to embrace the serenity of this heavenly experience. A truly blissful two hours slip by. Guided back to the Relaxation Lounge I gently reconnect with the world in a private alcove. These nooks use sheer, full-length curtains to create a sense of privacy, without feeling isolated. Enjoy a light platter of local tropical fruit and beautiful Li’tya Yulu tea (you must try this!) while you relax. My partner can live without me for a few more minutes (let’s face it, he’s probably enjoying some time out around the pool, soaking up the sun and the stunning view), so I settle back to browse through a book of inspirational quotes. Heavenly….

The Sea Temple Resort is an indulgence for the whole family. The rooms are laid out around an immense, free-form pool which is reminiscent of a natural tropical waterway. Most of the ground floor rooms feature swim up decks that extend directly out of the luxurious living rooms. Clean, simple architectural lines give this resort a fresh, contemporary feel. The blazing lamps, lit every evening, lead the way from the expansive pool to the lobby, leaving you in no doubt that you have arrived in the tropics.
At check-in, you feel mesmerised as the 3,000-square-metre pool beckons. River-shaped waterways, complete with waterfalls and bridges, meander away from the main pool throughout the complex and past our room. From here you can swim over to the Spa or pool bar. Complete with direct beach access and landscaped tropical gardens, accommodation consists of two- and three-bedroom, self-contained apartment villas. If you decide to swing the clubs at the Sea Temple Golf Club’s 18-hole championship links-style course adjacent to the resort, be sure to keep a wary eye out for the two resident crocodiles! The stylish Mii Spa has a long list of wonderful temptations. I couldn’t resist the two-hour Heavenly Therapy treatment. With a name like that, who could? It lived up to its name and, soon after arriving in the minimalist surrounds of the Spa, I was drifting away to a very happy place indeed beneath the firm, professional touch of my therapist. The cleansing sorbet and Rooibos tea offered afterwards in the Relaxation Lounge was a nice touch too.
All the world-class attractions of the area are just a short shuttle bus away: the reef, rainforest, boutiques, markets and the lively pubs, bars, cafés and restaurants are all there to complete the experience.

Wellness @ Port Day SpA

The beautiful Port Douglas beach BELOW: The couples room at the Wellness Day Spa

Review: Elissa Elwin When I learned I was to receive a 45-minute steam treatment called the Razul Experience, I was a little hesitant. The thought of more steam after a day in the humid tropics didn’t seem like a reward. Right in the heart of Port Douglas, Wellness@Port is the newest site of Mind and Motion Spas. However my initial hesitation soon melted away... Led through the tranquil and minimalist interior of the Day Spa, the feng shui-styled treatment rooms were spacious, light and relaxed. A tray of colourful aromatherapybased products for my hair, face and body were laid out inside the steam room for self-application. I never got too hot as a thermostat controlled the steam to maintain a comfortable temperature. Coated in Waterlily products, I lay in the scented humidity and let the treatment work its magic. This Australian brand is derived from pure botanical ingredients and infused with essential oils. Steam is a fantastic tonic to relieve muscle tension and stimulate circulation. I was surprised when the gentle timer went off to tell me it was time to shower and make myself ready for the second part of my Wellness@Port experience. My skin felt smooth, soft and deliciously-scented as I padded to the treatment room in my silky robe. I understood why this is a favourite treatment for couples. With someone special, this would be a wonderfully romantic and sensual experience to share. Aptly called Barefoot Indulgence, my 45-minute foot treatment perfectly complemented my steam experience. I sat back while the deft, skilled hands of my therapist first cleansed and refreshed my feet with nurturing botanical products, then treated me to a foot massage based on the ancient knowledge of reflexology. Happy feet indeed! Wellness@Port deserves its great reputation as a stylish Spa. I left with a gentle glow, a feeling of well-being and feet so divine I really didn’t want them sullied by the walk along the sandy streets back to my hotel. I floated away into the balmy evening of tropical Port Douglas. > Open: 7 days, including Public Holidays Douglas Manor 32 Macrossan Street, Port Douglas

About the spa: The doors have just opened to the luxe, shiny space that is Azul Spa Hair & Beauty, which occupies the site of the old Spa Chakra at the Blue Hotel in Woolloomooloo. This is the perfect inner-city pamper spot. City slickers can enter treatment rooms and emerge with massage, hair, mani-pedis and makeup taken care of. The concept of a hair and beauty salon - offering treatments in both areas - is a great idea; you can be having a manicure while your tint is developing on your hair. Perfect for the time-poor! Plus the location is perfect for you to finish with a relaxing drink or meal after your treatment! In fact, some packages include lunch at China Doll or other swanky Woolloomooloo eateries.

The Treatment Try: Being a Goddess for a Day for a real treat. The Goddess package involves a decadent 30-minute body scrub, followed by a wrap, deluxe mani and pedi hair treatment, shampoo, conditioner, blowdry and full make-up. This will cost you, but as the saying goes, ‘I'm worth it!’ Other delicious Spa treats include the hot stone massage and a heavenly foot ritual of bathing and reflexology. I was feeling quite worn-out when I arrived, yet I emerged pampered and groomed to perfection. The verdict: Glossy, shiny hair, perfect nails and peachy skin. A one-stop bliss-out shop! About the spa Located on the lobby level of the Wentworth Arcade, I thought why not do a real urban escape and make a getaway of it? So I took my daughter Isabel and turned the experience into a girl’s weekend - a treatment at Lattouf Hair Spa, dinner in the city, then an overnight stay at the Sofitel. When Isabel exclaimed over dinner “So this is what it feels like to be a Princess!”, it pretty much summed up how we both felt. To get to the Spa, you walk through the busy hair salon. The ambience changes from vibrant to calming the minute you cross the border. A sense of intimacy prevails. The unobtrusive decor of muted white walls and rich timber add to the tranquility that begins to unfold. Subtle smells of essential oils and mellow music transport you to an exotic place in India... far, far away!

Retreat & Relax WORDS: CYNTHIA MORTON

Head for the Gold Coast Hinterland to find lush rainforests, log fires, hummingbirds and five-star Spa treatments at Ruffles Lodge and Spa 50 SPA LIFE

www.spalife.com.au

As the vegetation grows greener and thicker, the air begins to feel cooler and crisper. It has been a hectic week, so to be able to drive out of the city of Brisbane knowing our destination is a luxury retreat in the Gold Coast Hinterland is in itself a relaxing thought. The trip only takes 50 minutes, yet it feels like we have come to another world as we arrive at Ruffles’ huge wooden security gate. “Cynthia Morton from Spa Life magazine”, my husband Chris introduces us into the intercom. “My, my, Cynthia, you do have a deep voice! Welcome.” We smile, pleased to be greeted with a little cheeky humour by lodge manager William Ewens. The imposing gate silently swings open, providing

access to the steep, winding, private road up to the Lodge. Llamas gently acknowledge our arrival as they languish in their rainforest home. Jan and John Nicholls, the lodge owners, and William and Alison Ewens, the lodge managers, are the backbone of the ‘unruffled team’ at this hinterland retreat. These wonderfully laid back husband and wife teams are a picture of health and wellbeing. Their warm welcome encourages us to feel relaxed and at home as we are invited to have a look around. Our tour through the newly launched Spa leaves me knowing I will be back again and again so I can work my way through their entire Spa menu. The treatment rooms are finished in New Guinea rosewood, granite and caesar stone, creating a first class destination. My treatment starts with the foot bath infusion ceremony and I place my tired feet in the rose petalfilled water. All the body care rituals incorporate exclusive use of authentic Australian Spa products from the Waterlily Collection. The aromas of pure white grapefruit, West Indian lime rind, rose geranium flower and French lavender work their magic on me and as promised successfully soak away the tension and stress from my busy city feet. Facials, body treatments, massages and extras such as infra-red sauna, steam room, Moroccan Rose Manicure and Orange Hair Crème Masque that includes a soothing head massage while extracts of blackberry and sweet orange, peppered with cinnamon and nutmeg, restore condition and shine... need I say more? Oh, but there is more, so much more, like the Deluxe Botanical Pedicure including ancient techniques of massage and exfoliation. This decadent, 60-minute treatment finishes with a rich spearmint and gingko foot treatment and includes cuticle work and polish. Chris is road-testing the Clarifying Back Treatment, which is like a facial for neglected backs. It decongests, cleanses, steams and exfoliates, and includes a rebalancing back massage, clarifying botanical masque and finishes with a light hydration treatment. (The Spa therapist’s words, not his!) The Lodge itself offers spectacular views as it is built on 50 acres of hinterland forest and has three acres of landscaped gardens and parkland. And this place is worth visiting for the food alone. Exquisite Chef Nerys Kinnaird serves us a meal to remember, starting with an entrée of Peking Duck with a rice noodle salad, followed by lemon sorbet as a palate cleanser. Our main course is oven-baked Blue Sea Bass with lemon risotto and tomato, caper and

shallot salsa. This was all simply plate-licking heaven and we didn’t think it could get any better until the Bitter Chocolate Mousse with mixed fruits of the forest was placed before us. If you’re a lover of chocolate mousse, like me, make this your sweet finish! Nature is all around you during your stay at Ruffles. The birdlife includes lorikeets, king parrots, hummingbirds, swans and wedge-tailed eagles. Our villa is called Pardalote after the smallest of all hummingbirds. As I sit reading a book on our villa verandah, I am treated to a visit from one of these sweet little birds, who greets me with a quick wink of hello. Apparently he lives in the trees nearby, but rarely socialises with guests, so I feel very privileged. Other wildlife includes some resident squatters, such as Basil the goose, goats called Cocoa Mia and Wooly Bear, and two more llamas that go by the name of 52 and Caramello. Guests can choose to stay in a Garden Villa, Spa Villa, Executive Lodge Suite or Tree House Pool Suite, so there are plenty of options, while golf buggies provide a fun mode of transport around the property. There are log fires, an exquisite infinity edge pool with sweeping views, air-conditioning, plasma TVs, a private chipping green, fantastic food, rainforest walking tracks, the Day Spa of course with its exotic menu of indulgences, in-room baths for two surrounded by candles and total privacy, great sound systems, a fridge stocked with chilled Coronas and Lindt chocolate, an evening turn-down service while you are dining in the restaurant, where you can finish the night off with a carafe of port and sumptuous chocolates... This is a magnificent, sacred, peaceful, tranquil and unforgettable place to visit, so do yourself a favour and check out their website for your next weekend with a group of great friends or someone special. Thai High experience

WORDS: Jackie Baron

Restaurant Vertigo on the rooftop of the Banyan Tree Hotel, Bangkok

Two heavenly Spas and two people in search of tranquility in a couples’ retreat. Jackie Baron opts for the six-star treatment at the Banyan Tree and Chiva Som. 52 SPA LIFE

www.spalife.com.au

You should know that, at the time of writing this, we have two gorgeous children. Our daughter is nearly five and her little brother is nearly three. As most mothers would know, sleep is all but a distant dream… For me, the simple luxury of reading a book or browsing through a newspaper is ‘so five years ago’. As we board our flight to Thailand, we have two weeks of utter bliss to look forward to. Yes, just the two of us! We have kissed our children goodbye and after the plane takes off I enjoy the most relaxing nine hours I’ve had since my daughter was born five years ago.

The Banyan Tree, Bangkok Indulgence awaited us at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport as our limousine, sent by The Banyan Tree hotel, whisked us away to the 60-storey city sanctuary right in the heart of Bangkok. The 55th-floor suite had been pleasantly and tastefully designed to showcase the essence of Thai heritage. Each suite featured a separate sleeping and working/living area, along with a spacious bathroom including a tub ideal for luxurious herbal baths at the end of a long day, or perhaps even the beginning of a long-overdue romantic escape! Before leaving Sydney, my husband and I formed a quasi agenda for our trip, including a ‘sleep well, eat well, live well’ mantra, so together we headed straight down to the Health Club on the 20th floor, located within the hotel’s award-winning Spa. At first, I just stood there admiring the floorto-ceiling glass and awesome views of the city below, until I was subtly reminded that I wasn’t there to simply look at the view. The Health Club was certainly well-equipped. And on the 21st floor there is a stunning outdoor swimming pool area with a backdrop of Bangkok’s city skyline.

The Spa itself is a blissful sanctuary serenely spread over the 20th and 21st floors of the Banyan Tree. The day’s aroma was ‘pine’, which subtly fragranced the Spa. My husband and I were to indulge in a 120-minute Master Therapist Massage. We sipped warm herbal tea before being guided down an intimate and sensual entrance to the generous and stunning treatment rooms, walking over white stones and passing a very unique architectural installation ‘Bamboo Aisle’, a meditative garden said to “spark the spirit “There are two kinds with a flow of crystal reflections.” Beautiful, delicate orchids of travel –fi rst class almost grow wild in our couples’ and with children.”
treatment room (combining steam, jacuzzi and shower Robert Benchley facilities), floating in bowls of water throughout the room, gently placed next to my feet as we commenced our treatment and even underneath the (extra wide) massage table for me to admire through the little face hole. I chose a blend of ‘rejuvenation’ oils and gently surrendered myself to the treatment. After the long flight from Australia, my muscles were so receptive

to the massage treatment. Hot herbal pouches were used, along with Eastern and Western massage techniques, working magic on my senses. Sticking to our agenda of ‘eating well’, we decided to experience one of Banyan Tree’s signature restaurants, Vertigo Grill and Moon Bar, which is located on the rooftop of the hotel. This sophisticated, unique and awesome dining space comes alive at sunset for nocturnal festivity in full view of the Thai capital. With a 360-degree panoramic view of the city as the perfect backdrop, we sipped slowly on our champagne... only for Bangkok’s heavens to open up on us! Despite the torrential downpour, within minutes, guests had been invited downstairs (and inside!) while still able to enjoy the delicacies of Vertigo Grill. The flawless and professional ‘service in the skies’ displayed by the restaurant staff, despite the inclement weather, was most admirable and the experience made our evening all the more theatrical and memorable. 21/100 South Sathon Road, Bangkok, Thailand Phone 02 679 1200 www.BanyanTree.com/Bangkok

Chiva Som Part two of our two-week Asian escape involved heading to Chiva-Som, ‘The Haven of Life’, a twohour drive to Hua Hin from Bangkok. Chiva-Som had sent a limousine to pick us up and once again our car service set the tone of the exquisite indulgence awaiting us at the other end; white mohair blankets should the air conditioning be too cool, chilled water should we get too warm, plus an array of Chiva-Som delicacies including oatmeal, choc-chip and nut snacks, preparing our palette for the gastronomic delights ahead. Our greeting? A beautifully fragrant garland of Thai jasmine. The aroma was pure and intense, reflecting what would be our time at The Haven of Life. We were then told that photography was not permitted, to ensure the absolute privacy of guests. Mobile phones and computers were permitted, but only in the privacy of guest rooms and in the library. After an initial moment of apprehension, we paused and agreed, and were quickly won back when told that wine and champagne were available after 6pm… the epitome of ‘health retreat’! Our Thai Pavilion room was perfectly private, with

traditional charm; one of only 57 rooms magically secluded among acres of lush, tropical gardens, while still on the beachfront of Hua Hin. When we were told there were close to 80 treatment rooms within the Spa - the heart of Chiva-Som - we immediately understood why Chiva-Som continues to be voted Best Destination Spa in the World. Key to any experience at Chiva-Som, our Health and Wellness consultation was scheduled for later that day. I had so carefully and diligently completed my health and medical history. Midway through our lengthy discussions covering the 160 treatments and therapies available, my consultant ever so sweetly told me I could just call her ‘On’… She made it pretty clear what my objective would be while staying at Chiva-Som. “Jackie, you need to relax!” We then put in brackets “(and maybe lose one or two kilos!)” By the time I had left On’s office, my timetable for our four-day stay was practically full. This is quite possibly the one single problem of Chiva-Som too much choice! I wanted to do it all, despite my apparent objective to relax. It seemed my husband was equally keen, and each time On would try and book in my daily treatments, she would find that my cohort was double-booking my schedule, wanting us to ‘share’ in the experience of gruelling Kinesis or Thai-boxing classes! Before I knew it, I was scheduled into a personal Kinesis class alongside my husband that very afternoon. I walked into the private Kinesis room like a roaring Leo (feeling rather fit and fierce) and left one hour later like a wet and beaten puppy! Kitty (or Killer Kitty, as my husband and I referred to our instructor for the duration of our stay) put us through an intense circuit of Kinesis, and I should point out that my husband needed an aid (his wife) to walk for the following three days as a result of performing over 300 lunges! Later, my Chiva-Som Invigorating Massage was like having my prayers answered. As On had earlier explained, the Spa at Chiva-Som is truly the heart of the experience. It is a sanctuary set like a mecca for massage, mud baths, meditation and moxibustion – a haven to relax and sip tea while reading the latest fashion bibles or simply chatting to the eclectic resort guests, before enjoying the wonderful steam room and sauna, and plunging into the cool pool scattered with fresh rose petals. For our four days of indulgence at Chiva-Som, there was no way I was going to detox and miss out on the resort’s award-winning Spa cuisine. Despite our menus including a detailed count of calories,

> salt content and fat content (which kept us on our best behaviour), the food was truly sublime. I felt like I had literally picked our produce myself from Chiva-Som’s organic garden. We shared the freshest of grilled seafood baskets as we sat together overlooking the beach. It was our kind of health spa that let us sip champagne watching the sun set. If only life was like this back home, I thought to myself as we re-entered the gates of the Haven after a morning power walk on the beach. We were shown to a cool running tap to clean our sandy runners and given a refreshing chilled towel to wipe our sweaty brows, followed by a towel and pool chairs to recover, on which our robes lay neatly draped ready for a full day of haven-like activity! Aqua Box was a popular choice for all sorts of guests as we shimmied our way through the pool, not realising how much you can sweat in water! Later that day, it was my return trip to the pool which was a truly unforgettable Chiva-Som experience. In my initial consultation, I had mentioned to ‘On’ that I exercise whenever I’m stressed. On that basis, she had recommended an assortment of meditation exercises and hoped I would take some of these slightly more relaxing therapies with me back home. In the bathing pavilion, I was greeted by Danchai for my Echo-Flotation Meditation class, not knowing quite what to expect. I can only say that this class was almost religious-like to its core. We started with 10 minutes together in the steam room, which felt like a mosque, as Danchai chanted. His voice was like a soaring bird. We were then ‘awoken’ and guided through a stony path of chilled water, followed by a two-minute, full-body plunge into chilled water. We were then harnessed in the pool with various flotation devices to our neck and legs and taken into a special and very unique form of meditation – floating. Simply unforgettable! I was curious to experience Flower Remedies and White Light Essences therapy. For someone who has quite a high intolerance to pollens, I was already nervously itching before being quickly calmed when I met Nadine, my therapist, who assured me sniffing of pollens is not involved. For one hour, we discussed my thoughts, feelings, concerns, my life and my personal stories, and it became a little clearer that flower remedies can be a form of healing and can bring harmony to one’s distress. Later that evening, a little package was delivered to my room containing my personal flower remedy,

a wonderful combination of bush fuchsia, autumn leaves and yellow cowslip orchid, among a bouquet of many other native Australian flowers. I must admit my little green bottle of flower essence was like a little bottle of hope. I’m just worried that in a time of need, I will ignore the instructions of taking just “7 little drops” and drink the whole bottle! For my husband, the Watsu treatment made him quite the changed man. I could simply say that Nittaya, the therapist, helped stretch and twist his body using the buoyancy of the water in the warm Watsu pool, but this does it no justice. I could see he was in that rare state of serious and deep relaxation. With wax ear plugs in my ears so the warm water sat just beneath my eyes, I floated out of a cocoonlike state and was stretched free to become almost butterfly-like. I fantasised through this journey and saw myself as a prima ballerina floating and dancing through the clouds. Listening to the beautiful muted music, it wasn’t just the water I could feel creeping up to my eyes, but unexpected tears. After this dreamlike experience, I floated back to the poolside area, where my husband waited eagerly, asking: “So how was it? How do you feel?” My response was clear and simple: “I felt love”. It was as close to the true feeling of ‘love’ as I have ever felt. The staff at Chiva-Som outnumber guests five to one, so the quality of the service is extremely impressive. I had a half-hour free one afternoon between Muay Thai Boxing and couples meditation, and found myself aimlessly wandering through the gift store and browsing the Chiva-Som cookbook, my mouth watering in anticipation of the evening meal ahead. I had mentioned a chocolate cake recipe was missing from the cookbook. An envelope now arrived. Talk about service - there was a detailed recipe for the Chiva-Som Chocolate Sponge Cake, complete with kilocalories, proteins, carbohydrate and fat content! It was the perfect way to leave the Haven of Life, along with some wonderful new exercises, meditation and healthy eating habits. I had secured Chiva-Som’s recipe for chocolate cake, along with a very fine recipe for living well. Quiet Times at qualia exotic

Words: kris abbey

The location is stunning, the pristine blue waters glitter in the sun, the lush palm trees extend their arms to welcome you to paradise‌ and then you arrive at qualia‌

I think I may have over-used the phrase ‘oh my god’ a tad during my time here, although the inflection soon changed from a rapid-fire ‘ohmygod’ to a more drawn-out, breath-holding ‘Oh - My - God’. So this is qualia! When we land on Hamilton Island, one of the resort’s drivers picks us up from the airport. As we arrive during Audi Race Week, the sailing event, naturally we are escorted up the hill in a brand new Audi. The big iron gates of qualia slowly retreat, like thick velvet curtains on Broadway, to reveal the most spectacular set. It is so surreal, almost too perfect! Ahead is the view of the Coral Sea, so sparkly it is almost blinding. On either side of the driveway are lush green gardens hiding the individual guest pavilions, a myriad of greens and blues. We pull up at reception in the Long Pavilion. Rather than obstructing the view, this glass and timber building frames it perfectly. The long building has doors that unfold, letting the view pour in. At one end is a bar and a corner library with a deck for afternoon cocktails or a quiet read. At the other end is the dining area. In the middle is a relaxed lounge area overlooking an infinity-edge pool. At check-in, you are given the keys to your own golf cart for getting around, and informed that everything is included, other than alcohol. Children under the age of 16 are not catered for, and if we need anything at all, simply ‘let us know’. For the busiest time of year at qualia, it is still peacefully quiet. Eager to check out our pavilion, we head off in the golf cart, the three children left at home and work already a distant memory. The pavilions are very special, although to fit in with the beautiful surrounds of the Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsundays, they probably need to be! Each pavilion has its own living area, separate bedroom and bathroom, a large

outdoor living area and, wait for it, its own private pool. What to do first? Take a dip in the pool, read a book on the huge day bed on the deck, open the champagne and watch the yachts sail by, or perhaps take in the view while luxuriating in the bath? The marketing brochure says, “This resort immerses you in a relaxed atmosphere, offering personalised and intuitive service. Qualia is a truly special place, where everything has been meticulously considered to relax the mind, yet completely spoil the senses. It’s what we refer to as ‘the qualia effect’.” Well, we are certainly under its spell! With one of the great natural wonders of the world right there in front of us, we opt to borrow some of the resort’s kayaks and paddle to one of the nearby islands. It is times like this that you truly appreciate the environment in which we live and feel blessed that we can reach out and touch it, smell it and take a swim in it. Dinner is served at the Long Pavilion, with little tea-light candles everywhere creating an alluring ambience. You can opt to dine in or out, but the choice for us is easy on such a balmy night, with the soft sound of the waves lapping the shore. Now we appreciate better how private the resort is. Until now, we almost felt like we had the place to ourselves, but at dinner we get the pleasant surprise of seeing other guests here as well. And being qualia, we spot a few famous faces too.

The outdoor shower

A special mention must go to the qualia food! Like everything here, it is world-class. The chilli crab at lunch is a stand-out, and nothing makes a meal more memorable than a couple of whales frolicking in the water right in front of you while you enjoy the taste of paradise. The champagne is enjoyed watching the sunset from the highest point on the island, where qualia host twilight drinks each evening. There are some lovely (and challenging) bushwalks on the island. Make the effort to climb Peaks Passage – once you get to the top, you’re on the highest point of the island and the views go as far as the eye can see. Stretching along the Queensland coastline for over 2,000 kilometres, the Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef system in the world. outdoor shower) and additional guest facilities including a relaxation area with steam room and outdoor vichy shower. An open-air yoga and meditation pavilion completes the Spa building. I am thrilled to see this uniquely Australian Spa embraces the natural Australian product ranges Li’tya and Sodashi. Both ranges are far more than normal creams; they come with healing rituals to treat mind, body and soul. The Spa menu is comprehensive, but not overwhelming. I narrow my choice down to two, then opt for the Mala Maya, a body treatment using Li’tya products. It includes a body exfoliation, mud wrap, hair and scalp treatment, plus a Kodo massage. The treatment begins with a traditional smoking ritual to ward off evil thoughts and spirits. I like that. This is followed by a foot scrub and warm foot bath to begin the rebalancing and re-grounding process. I float to the massage table. Warm oil is drizzled, and salt sprinkled, over my body. While my therapist scrubs new life into my skin, I take in the native bird calls. Then I’m coated in a luscious mud (chosen prior to the treatment, based on my sensory needs) and I’m wrapped up securely like a precious gift. While the mud puts precious minerals back into my skin and continues the cleansing process, I get to lay back and enjoy my all-time favourite - a head and scalp massage. I am so relaxed I nearly fall asleep, but will myself to stay awake so I don’t miss anything! Getting back to nature, I wash the mud from my skin under the outdoor shower, enjoying the wee audience of a few local birds, with yachts visible in the distance out to sea. As the mud washes away, it takes my tired, dry skin with it. I’m now relaxed enough to absorb my surroundings. At the end of my treatment room are glass folding doors. They are fully open and a few steps away (or so it seems) is the sea. To my left is the other wall, which unfolds, so there is no barrier between indoors and the little courtyard where I shower. Completing the treatment is the uplifting and rhythmic Kodo massage, at the end of which I feel totally uplifted. When people say you’ll be taken on a sensory journey, I now know what they mean. The journey takes me to a final destination of being recharged and energised, ready to face the world again. S phone 1300 780 959 email reservations@qualia.com.au www.qualia.com.au

The Best of Bali exotic

Words: kris abbey

AYANA Resort and Spa in Bali was recently voted Best Spa in the World by readers of Condé Nast Traveller, so I felt it was my duty to check out this Spa for myself and report back… Built on top of, and into, a cliff - as close to the Indian Ocean as you can get without being in it! sits the massive AYANA Resort and Spa. Ayana is Sanskrit for ‘place of refuge’ and this resort is just that. From the moment you arrive, you feel a remarkable sense of ‘come inside, we’ll look after you’. The Balinese just seem to have the knack of extending genuine warmth and friendliness, without appearing overbearing. My personal butler (how nice!) takes me to my room, or rather my Villa. In fact, considering the bathroom comprises five rooms, including a bath filled with rose petals and a shower that could house

68 SPA LIFE

www.spalife.com.au

a small family, perhaps Palace would be more apt! The private courtyard with infinity-edge plunge pool, cabana and four-poster king-size bed certainly has me feeling like a Princess. It is all completely divine; not overly opulent, but very, very swish. Now let’s get to the Spa. What started out as a little four-room massage parlour has turned into a 40-room Spa of Spas. There are also two Private Spa Villas built on rocks that stick up out of the Indian Ocean. The Aquatonic pool is like no other, and the rooms either have a private courtyard with lush gardens or an ocean view. The ultimate plan, according to Michi Sonoda, the Spa Director, is to offer Spa Retreats, including Wellness Programs and Spa Cuisine. Michi travels the globe bringing new therapies and treatments to the Spa, then works with the therapists to add their own touch. The Spa menu has many familiar treatments, as well as many unique ones. But oh which to choose? The wine treatments sound most appealing, as they are so unusual, so I sign up for a wine body treatment and facial. The treatments use specially formulated products containing rich antioxidants extracted from wine. They are developed in Hokkaido, Japan by renowned Japanese sommelier Makoto Abe, together with the research team at Tokyo University of Science.

“The culture of drinking wine for health has been cultivated for so many centuries and dates back to 6000 BC, so it was only a matter of time before we discovered the aesthetic benefits of wine,” says Michi. “We are delighted to be the only Spa in South-East Asia to offer this innovative and highly effective Wine Therapy.” The treatment, which costs US$400++ per person, includes a body massage, body wrap and gentle face massage with the application of Grape Skin Cleansing Oil, Grape Masque and Grape Essence. Just the smell of red wine normally puts me to sleep, so add the soft touch of soothing hands and I’m down for the count! I have to say, I really like the Balinese style of massage, with pressure applied to a point, followed by a stroke. It feels like the therapist senses an energy block, then releases it so fresh new energy can come through. Hard to explain, easy to enjoy! The treatment ends with the ultimate decadence. The price of an average bottle of wine in Bali nudges the $100 mark, so when I lay back to soak in a flower bath and my therapist begins pouring a bottle of French red into the water, my jaw drops! She may as well pour a bottle of Chanel into the water. Thankfully, she also leaves me with a glass filled with red (and an antipasto platter) to help dull the shock. While I bathe

in the miraculous power of wine and toast my good fortune, that Princess feeling begins to resurface! The other treatment I experienced was even more memorable. This was performed at one of the Spas on the Rocks, with waves crashing beneath me and surrounded by the beauty of Mother Nature. “A Warm and Cool Jade Stone Ceremony to Soothe Body, Mind and Spirit” – I was sold! This two-anda-half hour treatment starts with a jade stone foot bath ritual and ends with a rejuvenating 24-point foot reflexology treatment and clarifying jade stone facial. In between, there is the most amazing body massage - a fusion of stone massage with Swedishstyle, deep tissue massage using precious warm and cool jade stones. Jade is used to balance yin and yang, so you leave feeling relaxed and vibrant. This is all going swimmingly as I relax afterwards on a little day bed on the Rock Spa deck enjoying a quiet herbal tea. Then some movement catches my eye and I glance up towards the long flight of stairs connecting us to the main resort… and see over a hundred tiny monkeys literally pouring down the stairs! We had previously been warned there are monkeys around the resort and it’s best to keep your windows and doors shut to stop these little thieves from entering your villa, and I’d already spotted the odd cheeky monkey while out walking, but this is

Tips ✻ Do yoga every morning. The yoga class at sunrise is at the outdoor pavilion overlooking the ocean – what a way to start the day! ✻ Have a swim in the rock pool (an infinity-edge pool built partly into the cliff, with the waves crashing below). This is also a great spot to watch the sunset. ✻ Sip a cocktail at sunset at the Rock Bar - an open-air bar built on the rocks. Very hip and happening. ✻ Get up early one morning and go to the Jimbaran Bay markets with the resort chefs. Enjoy how business is conducted as the fish and produce is sourced for the resort’s restaurants.

Getting There

a completely awe-inspiring sight to behold. As the wave of four-legged furry things slinks right towards me, I hear “Miss Kris, Miss Kris, you must come.” I am spellbound, but my therapist is in a panic. Talk about yin and yang! But I retreat inside and enjoy the sight from inside the Spa. Like the coolest kids on the block, oblivious to the reaction they’re causing, the monkeys just saunter on past us down the stairs, across the rocks and onto the beach. As I quietly take in this scene, I realise the sun is setting. All of a sudden, little fishing boats appear, like stars in the night, bobbing on the ocean. It is such a tranquil, calming scene, especially after the excitement of the primate parade! This has been the most memorable Spa experience I’ve ever had. Priced at US$500, it may not be a cheap thrill, but it’s certainly unique. So is this Spa worthy of its No.1 status? Well, you’ll just have to go and see for yourself! S AYANA Resort and Spa

It’s a wonder that this international supermodel has time to fit any more in. On top of being an ‘angel’ for Victoria’s Secret, a cover girl for a myriad of men’s magazines and travelling for global shoots, Miranda Kerr has now launched - and fronts - her own skincare range to boot. KORA by Miranda Kerr is an organic skincare range for face and body, stocked exclusively by David Jones. When she’s not strutting her stuff on the catwalk, Miranda is still pretty sweet, known as much for her perky smile and cute dimples as for the fabulous physique she shows off for a living as a Victoria’s Secret Angel. Off camera, 27-year-old Miranda has also been dating actor Orlando Bloom for several years. Her jet-set lifestyle lands her at some of the world’s best Spas, yet thankfully she remains a down-to-earth Aussie girl. Q: What beautifying goodies does Kora contain? The range is organic and includes the macronutrient Noni, packed with vitamins and minerals, macrobiotic salts, rose water, rosehip oil, Vitamins ACE Complex and Vitamin E. Q: Where did the inspiration for the name and the pretty blue packaging come from? A: The name KORA comes from the core of self. The packaging, well, I love the sea and the sky and the ocean and its tranquil, calming nature. I wanted to recreate that, so I chose the blue packaging. Q: What made you launch this range? As a model, I have to look my best, so what I put on my skin really matters. About three years ago, I started talking to friends and family about creating a line of skin care products that would bring together the natural ingredients that I used and that I knew really worked and delivered real results. Q: Which of your products can’t you live without? Okay, so the first would be the Recovery Eye Gel Treatment ($54.95), which is especially good for travel as it’s so refreshing and soothing. It also has organic seaweed in it, which is great for stimulating collagen. The Organic Rich Body Lotion ($44.95) has jojoba, cocoa butter and macadamia extracts, and it smells amazing! I also use the Exfoliating Cream ($54.95) three times a week to remove all the makeup I have to wear for work.

Supermodel slash ‘Angel’ Miranda Kerr on inner and outer beauty, plus how she looks so good all the time, even on planes. Q: Your success has been off the charts. You’re still pinching yourself a bit, right? A: Yes, continually! Every day I wake up and am very, very grateful for my life, for my family. I also feel very blessed just to have my health. Q: You look super-slim. How do you do it? A: I’m passionate about nutrition. I did study nutrition, but I think that was just an extension of what my mum and grandmother had already told me. I mean, I grew up drinking noni juice and aloe vera juice, which do incredible things for my skin and are the first thing I turn to for curing jetlag. Q: What gets you going in a morning? A: I like to start my day off with hot water and half a squeezed fresh lemon. It’s great to detoxify and I think it really kick-starts your metabolism to get your body going. Q: Can you give us some in-flight beauty tips? A: I drink noni juice and lots of water before, during and after the flight. I try to do some yoga on the plane if I can. I also meditate and listen to Deepak Chopra on my iPod and just focus on my breath… all of this rejuvenates me. Q: Do you have the best job in the world? A: Seriously! We get flown around the world, we go to the most exotic locations, we stay in the most beautiful hotels and Spas - we get treated like angels! S

In 1998, COMO Shambhala launched COMO Shambhala Cuisine, featuring nutritionally rich, healthy dishes developed by Executive Chef, Amanda Gale. Originally from Australia, Amanda has a profound interest and knowledge of Spa Cuisine. She trained with Neil Perry of Rockpool, Sydney. COMO Shambhala cuisine is not about calorie counting. It is scientifically designed to maximise personal performance by increasing concentration and energy levels while addressing blood-sugar imbalances. Inspired by the living foods tradition, cooking methods are minimised to help maintain the nutritional integrity of the original ingredients. This allows guests to benefit from the ‘life force’ of specific foods, which in their raw state are rich with living enzymes and essential vitamins and minerals. Wherever possible, these ingredients are sourced locally, organic and delivered from field to table with minimum delay. Meat, fish and vegetables all have their place. COMO Shambhala Cuisine also accommodates food intolerances. Blended nut milks are substitutes for both cows’ milk and genetically tempered soy milk. Yeast-free breads are baked daily. Menus feature little salt and avoid the use of processed sugar by sourcing natural sweeteners, such as Really Raw Honey and stevia, neither of which alter the body’s blood sugar levels and are therefore suitable for diabetics. Even with an emphasis on raw food, tastes are given full rein, with influences ranging from South Indian to Italian. In addition, indigenous food traditions and local produce are combined with COMO Shambhala’s basic principles to create original recipes that speak to a specific location.

The Bountiful Coconut Also known as the ‘tree of life’, the coconut is a hallmark of Asian cuisine. All parts of the coconut are used - the juice, the flesh, even the shell is used as a pot or cooking utensil. Young coconut water is nature’s own isotonic drink. A good source of potassium, Vitamin C, calcium and magnesium, coconut water helps balance the blood and release fatty acids, which can then be burned for energy, rather than stored as fat. This in turn raises metabolism and aids weight loss. For more information on the many health benefits of coconuts, visit www.coconutoil.com.

Why yoga? Why you? Why now? WORDS: Sheldon Grant Leon

In the search for achieving and nurturing - balance, peace, truth and harmony in our lives, yoga can provide solutions.

There are four key ingredients leading to balance in your life and yogic practice: 1. Introspection – looking within and observing yourself 2. Illumination – manifesting from inspiration and creativity 3. Wisdom – knowledge in practice and oneness 4. Innocence – the child-like freedom to express and to love

102 SPA LIFE

www.spalife.com.au

As a yoga teacher, I have been searching to understand the mysteries of the psychological and physical shifts that take place in a person’s life when they first encounter and then stretch into the amazing and life-changing world of yoga. Yoga brings peace to all, yet every experience is individual. The history, principles, roots and heart of yoga centre around the individual and how we are all unique in all respects. Yoga creates individuality and artistry. Through learning simple principles and disciplines of the body, mind and soul, yoga allows confidence to grow, inner strength and power – which may have been stripped away over years of neglect, misuse, abuse or ignorance – to re-emerge. As adults, we slowly lose our child-like nature and our innocence in the pursuit to get ahead in this fierce and competitive world and in our fast-paced, sometimes neurotic, lives. This has come to be a ‘normal’ way of life. The end result of being out of balance sooner or later manifests as disease. The body loses its homeostasis, power and strength, its harmony and peace and flexibility. The mind loses these traits, along with confidence, as the spirit is sapped of its creativity and infinite power. All you have to do is observe a child’s pure innocence through their strong and flexible minds and bodies, allowing them to see the world as their oyster. At each and every moment, a child lives life without fear of flying. An adult’s world, on the other hand, is mostly not open to this innocence and trust. In an adult’s world, clipping one’s wings, conforming and adapting to society’s demands is all part of growing up. When you get to experience yoga, you remember - on some deep, deep level - what it was like to fly. You remember the freedom and exhilaration this feeling brings to your spirit and soul. In a metaphorical way, yoga resets the clock. Rebalancing the hardware and software of abundant

and joyous journeys. Re-claiming what might have been thrown away, discarded onto a rubbish heap of times gone by. Yoga is timeless. It’s history goes back thousands of years. Yet it is just as important and poignant and relevant now as it was eons ago. As we move within each moment and movement in yoga, we discover the relevance of time, step-by-step, beat-by-beat. We learn to connect with our bodies, our breath, our mind and soul. Precious awareness and attention to detail is born. Within this slow and gentle rhythm of being in the now, we start to see and feel again the magic of the moment. The ever-beating pulse and sound of our heart. We begin to taste success again and smell the flowers of youthful exuberance. This is why yoga teachers of the highest order look so young and inspire so much. They are living, breathing examples of one of the laws of nature. What one thinks of with an open heart, balance and harmony, they must become. This will not be easy all the time because life is a kaleidoscope of different experiences and challenges. Both light and dark, soft and hard, bringing with them successes and failures. This is the journey of life. For without failure, we cannot learn. To fly as a child in our youth, be grounded as an adult, then learn to fly again - practicing yoga with a thirst to grow will give you the tools to do just that. Let no man, woman, company or society take this away from you. Like the DNA blueprint encoded into every cell of our being, it is our birthright to fly and soar again and again. Our forefathers used and understood another important element of yoga: courage. Without courage, humankind would never have survived the jungle. We are all here today because of this incredible power. We might not live in a wild, dark jungle with ferocious, man-eating creatures hunting us, but today’s society of super-congested highways, stressed employees and employers is an equally dangerous place in our quest for survival. Survival of the fittest, just like our ancestors before us. We need to develop courage, not just to survive, but to grow, evolve and prosper in all parts of our lives. These are the tools needed to fulfill our dharma (destiny), bringing happiness, health, harmony and respect to all creatures. This leads us to ego. In yoga, you learn to confront your ego. It is both powerful on the one hand and crippling on the other. It all depends on understanding how it works and how we use it. If ego works towards being conscious with kindness and awareness, it can inspire and heal.

Happiness, prosperity, goodness, love and joy manifest as a result. However, if used unconsciously and selfishly, with arrogance, without care and consideration of others, and without awareness, the ego has the ability to destroy lives, including the life of the person using it. History is littered with many examples of both sides of this coin. Using ego wisely is what it’s all about, with gratitude, mindfulness and awareness. Thousands of years ago, Patanjali, who was one of the greatest Sage’s of Yoga, said: Yogashchittavrttinirodhab. This complicated word translates as: Yoga (union), Chitta (mind), Vrtti (activity), nirodhab (complete absorption). The art of yoga works on the ability to direct the mind toward an object and to sustain that direction without any distraction. Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra’s (threads) is a text that covers the many aspects of life, beginning with a code of conduct and ending with mankind’s vision of his true nature. To paint and see the God and path of yoga, this ‘eightfold way’ or roadmap offers a method of awakening. I want to bring home the idea that it is this moment, this exact time in your life, that is important. Not quaint or insignificant, but monumental. Nothing is beyond your reach. Quantum mechanics and physics prove this. If we accept ourselves as worthy of love, respect and honour, and believe in these possibilities, so it shall come to pass. For this is the law of attraction. If we change our thought patterns, our belief systems, we can change our reality and manifest our dreams. We have the power to create our own destiny. Yoga instills in us the tools to bring this to fruition. What we speak and how we carry ourselves on this wonderful journey of life affects our present and our future. Accept that change can and will happen. Imagine a world without change, then imagine one with change! Which one would you choose? Welcome to the world of yoga... make your dreams a reality. 5 Years of

Hepburn

Springs Bliss

Two top blokes: Chris Malden and Wayne Cross

108 SPA LIFE

www.spalife.com.au

For most five-year anniversaries, there’s the wooden salad bowl or perhaps a timber garden seat, but for Chris Malden and Wayne Cross, this anniversary is far more special. For five years now, Mineral Spa has been at the forefront in offering stateof-the art Spa treatments. The crème on this year’s birthday cake is the $7 million government investment in the Daylesford area, recognising its impact on the health and wellness segment in Australia. Wayne Cross, co-owner of Mineral Spa, explains that the vision five years ago was to develop the best Spa facility with sustainable building options and encourage the most enthusiastic and passionate staff to join them on their journey. The long list of Spa awards they have won reflects this commitment. Wayne says they purpose-built the environmental garden around the Spa, which is planted with native shrubs selected for their drought tolerance and are heavily mulched. The ponds and waterfall at the front door of the Mineral Spa have created their own ecosystem, complete with a family of frogs. “The Retreat water therapy area has a northern aspect and the building was designed to gain full solar benefits. A minimum number of windows were placed on the western side, and a special rendered-foam wall cladding was installed to reduce the thermal load. All lighting inside the building is low energy and a flick of one switch turns the whole building off. All lights and fans installed in the change rooms and store room are controlled by movement sensors with timers. “Our choice of treatment and retail sale products was also important. In choosing Li’Tya, with their alignment with the Aboriginal philosophy of treading lightly upon the earth, we’ve been able to integrate this philosophy in the day-to-day operation of the Spa,” he says. The timber floors are recycled messmate timber from the Australian Recycled Timber Company, recycled ironbark posts are used throughout the

Spa, and the timbers used on the entry came from a wharf in Sydney. Of course, the success of Mineral Spa might just be the heavenly, soft pak float beds (the only operational ones in the Southern Hemisphere) that offer another dimension to wellness and relaxation. With comments from devotees such as “I woke myself up snoring”, a 15-minute session feels like a two-hour sleep. You find yourself lightly cocooned in a quilted wrap, which fills with water. As the bed floor recedes, you are cradled in a hammock of warmth - completely weightless. The Retreat combines all the elements and resources of the Spa Capital - open-air, hot mineralwater spas and a cool plunge pool, hot fired basalt rock sauna, local essential oils, steam room, Chioxy oxygenator, infrared Detox Box and the list goes on... Mineral Spa applies a holistic approach to wellness, where the journey ultimately delivers you to a state of bliss. Longer, enhanced treatments with an emphasis on privacy and seclusion enable guests to fully experience what it means to relax in the country. The packages suit the needs and budgets of individuals, couples and small groups, ranging from 1-8 hours with lunch/dinner/accommodation included, depending on your package. A big Happy Birthday and Congratulations to Chris and Wayne and all the team at Mineral Spa – we look forward to the next five years!
