Welcome

EDITORS LETTER

Welcome to the second edition of Destination Golf Portugal. Destination Golf Portugal was launched in 2010 to provide an essential guide to golf in Portugal, educating the thousands of golfers that travel to Portugal each year about where to play, where to stay and where to find the best deals. Due to the phenomenal success of the 2010 Edition, I am delighted to bring you Destination Golf Portugal 2011, published in association with the Portuguese Trade and Tourism Office. Portugal has been a magnet for golf tourism over the past three decades. It now is one of the leading golf destinations in the World, with award winning courses and resorts located in the Algarve and Lisbon. Portugal currently has more than eighty golf courses, with championship designs by renowned architects such as Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros and Robert Trent Jones, who used the natural Portuguese terrain and coastline to create their works of art. Over the following 96-pages, we visit nine different golf destinations across the islands of Madeira and the Azores; and the popular mainland destinations of the Algarve, Lisbon and Porto. The Porto e Norte region in northern Portugal might be better known for its famous Port Wine, but it does have an established golf product that is often overlooked. Here you will find Championship Links courses that are nestled in lively summer resorts, or mountainous courses that are hidden amongst the vines. With low cost airlines flying directly into Porto International Airport, surely this region has its right to be heard. We are delighted to include them as one of our new destinations for 2011. With an assortment of festivals in each destination throughout the year, each holiday to Portugal is sure to provide something unique. Our festival pages will provide information about thirty sporting and cultural events, which would be worth considering when planning your next visit to the sun. Enjoy Portugal and enjoy this golf guide. Best regards,

Dermot Synnott Publisher Destination Golf Media

Palheiro Golf Situated close to the famous gardens of Quinta do Palheiro, which date back to the beginning of the nineteenth century and are famous for their wide range of exotic flora, the Palheiro course offers fabulous views over Funchal bay, the sea and the Ilhas Desertas in the distance. The par-72 course was designed by the architect Cabell Robinson, a former assistant of Robert Trent Jones, who had already done work in Portugal and took care to make the most of the hills, mountain peaks and deep valleys that are a typical feature of the Madeira landscape, in order to provide golfers with an exciting and competitive round. The course got facelift in 2003. Two holes were completely replace and a small 6-hole academy course was added.

Club de Golf Santo Da Serra

Porto Santo

Host venue to the Madeira Open European Tour each year since 1993, this picturesque course is a Robert Trent Jones that opened in 1991. It offers fantastic panoramic views over the ocean and is one of the most breathtaking mountain courses in Europe. Because it is built on very irregular terrain at an altitude of 670 metres above sea level and in an area of profuse vegetation, the fulfilling of this project required a huge effort in every sense. Nonetheless, Trent Jones succeeded in giving the 27 holes, (the third nine-hole loop was opened in October 1998) a logical, interdependent design. One of the most spectacular holes is hole number 4 (on the Machico course), a par 3, where the drive to the green is played over a ravine filled with very dense vegetation. The whole course provides players with most extraordinary views.

Spreading out over the idyllic island of Porto Santo, the layout of the course was planned in such a way as to blend harmoniously with the landscape and to respect the island’s ecosystems, taking advantage of the native plant species and the various lakes already existing there. It is an extensive and demanding course set in a spectacular landscape, one that is capable of attracting not only professional players, but also less experienced golfers, being divided into two different areas. The southern course comes close to the traditional style of the best American courses, with a number of lakes and the island’s long beach as a backdrop. The northern course is a made more difficult by high cliffs and combines the best features of British links courses with spectacular scenery, providing an unrepeatable challenge for golfers.

azores Enjoy the popular island culture on the Azores Islands, set in stunning natural surrounds. The Azores Islands are an archipelago of nine Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. The name Azores was derived from a Portuguese word “azures, which translated is the plural of the word blue. The islands are peaceful, quiet and scenic. The island is full of blue and green lagoons that are

shadowed by high peaked mountains. Festivals are popular and tourism attractions are plentiful. But a holiday to the Azores is all about unwinding, grasping a break from a hectic daily life and enjoying nature at its best.

The holes are long and wide with large undulating greens, flanked by tall trees.

Batalha Designed by Cameron Powell this 6,435metre course is set on a historic battle site, from which the course name derives. This is the newest golf course in the Azores, a welcome addition to a golf product that is growing in the Azores. It is located on a plain close to Pinta Delgada, and built on volcanic rock. The fact that the course was built on volcanic rock created difficulties in its design and has resulted in a spectacular contrast between the green playing areas and the dry woods standing on rocky soil to the side of these. The holes are long and wide with large undulating greens, flanked by tall trees. The course has been designed to hold major golf events, such as the Azores Open, which takes place here each year.

Clube de Golfe da Ilha Terceira

Furnas

Biult in 1954, this championship course is situated close to Angra do HeroĂsmo, the capital of Terceira island. Tall pine-trees, brightly-coloured flowers (particularly azaleas and hydrangeas), several natural lakes and a superb level of upkeep, all lend this course much of the natural beauty of the Azores. Several tees for each hole also give the course a championship flavour and make playing here a truly unforgettable experience. The club is run by a tripartite group, consisting of representatives from the Regional Government of the Azores, the Azores Air Zone and the American Command.

Built in 1936, Furnas golf course was updated in 1986 with an additional 9-holes making it up to a 6,232metre 18-hole course. The course has full matured and now it would be impossible to distinguish between the new and old nines. It is located around 40 minutes from Ponta Delgada, in pleasant surroundings with stunning beauty. The greens are small and undulating, while the tree lined fairways are very tight. It hosts an international golfing event each year called the Sata Azores Open - in conjunction with the Batalha course.

Palmares

Boavista

The new Palmares Golf Course is a course of great beauty. It recently reopened, with a brand new layout designed by Robert Trent Jones Jnr that perfectly blends mountain and coastal views. The par-71 layout uses a blend of manicured landscapes which boast a mix landscape of white sand and high dunes. New layout has plenty of breathtaking views to Alvor or to the sea mixed with great holes in the dunes. Located close to the historic city of Lagos, Palmares offers a wonderful blend of beach and mountain scenery. Its clubhouse affords a fantastic panoramic view over a 25-km stretch of Atlantic coastline. The Torneio das Amendoeiras em Flor, the oldest amateur tournament in the Algarve, has been played here since 1977.

Opened in January 2002, the Boavista golf course is one of the Algarve’s most recent courses and is built as a natural Algarvian landscape. The 18- hole championship course is a design by Howard Swan. Built on a flat area just 200 metres from the Atlantic, the course is close to Praia da Luz beach. Half the course is located in the National Agricultural Reserve; typical trees of the Algarve (almond and carob) and ancient ruins form the characteristic landscape of this versatile course. One of the most unforgettable holes is the spectacular seventh, a par 4 built with the sea as a backdrop and panoramic views sweeping from the coast at Praia da Luz across to the mountains Serra de Monchique.

Parque de Floresta

Boavista

Parque de Floresta

Vale de Milho

Situated in the westernmost part of the Algarve, only 15 minutes away from the city of Lagos, this varied course spreads over the slopes of the hills overlooking the ocean. The Parque da Floresta golf course was designed by the Spanish architect Pepe Gancedo, whose general philosophy is to interfere with nature as little as possible. The fairways therefore accompany the natural contours of the terrain, spreading along the valleys and gorges, with their vineyards and eucalyptus groves, bordered by olive-trees, palms and pines. With an enjoyable par-71 course and full resort facilities, Parque da Floresta always proves popular with tourists.

Vale de Milho is a short nine-hole course located close to the village of Carvoeiro. It uniquely comprises of par-3 holes and only has a total length of 926 metres. That said, many golfers find this course quite challenging and very attractive, thanks to its waterfalls and wonderful views over the sea. So, if you want to practise your short iron shots, spend some time in a beautiful and relaxing landscape and enjoy yourself at the same time, you will not be disappointed by this course.

Pestana Gramacho Another of the Pestana Group Courses, this course is the brainchild of Nick Price, the former world No.1 player and renowned golf course architect, Ronald Fream. Together they have created a uniquely designed 18 hole course with 27 varied greens that enable the golfer to play the same course with new challenges several times. This Championship course hosted the Portuguese Ladies Open in 2005 and 2007, and prides itself on maintaining tournament standard conditions all year. The design technique involves well guarded greens with clever bunkering that makes the player think before going directly for the pin. Some times the centre of the green is a better option. The boulder outcrops and dry stone walling to the fig, carob and olive trees, have been complemented by art fully positioned lakes and bunkers.

Pestana Vale da Pinta

Pestana Alto Golf

The Vale da Pinta Course is one of the best-designed courses in Europe. Inaugurated in 1992, it is a Championship course with an exceptional layout designed by the famous American golf course architect, Ronald Fream. Since 1992 it has earned a deserved reputation for the outstanding level of maintenance of the course, and its design, which makes it a challenge to golfers of all standards. The Pinta Course was 8 consecutive times host to the Seniors Tour. The fairways are Bermuda grass, while strategically positioned sand bunkers protect the greens, clad in Pen Cross Bent, and two ornamental lakes influence play at four different holes around the course.

Located between the picturesque village of Alvor and the bustling tourist resort of Praia da Rocha, Alto Golf has established itself as one of the most popular golf courses in the Algarve. Designed by the legendary golf course architect Sir Henry Cotton, the rolling fairways and elevated greens make for an enjoyable experience for all levels of player. With the combination of a fantastic golf course, a fully serviced golf clubhouse, state of the art driving range and PGA professional golf academy, Alto will cater to your every golfing need. Located close to numerous stunning beaches and a wide variety of traditional and international restaurants and bars, Alto Golf is the perfect location for that much needed break in the sunshine.

Pestana Vale da Pinta

Pestana Alto Golf

Pestana Silves Pestana Silves is a serene spot, but the course is anything but the proverbial walk in the park. From the very opening tee shot, the golfer is faced with water hazards on both sides, rewarding the brave with an easier approach to the green. Silves encourages and rewards attacking play. The excellent condition, all year round, is ideal for low scoring. A constant text of precision play will be rewarded with birdie chances. Most holes offer a spectacular mountain and valley view, overlooking palm trees and olive groves. This new course is designed by Sir Henry Cotton and is located in an quite part of the Algarve.

Oceanico O’Connor Perfectly complementing the Faldo Course, whilst taking advantage of the rich valley soil in contrast to the arid hillside, Christy O’Connor Jnr’s course at Amendoeira offers no less of a challenge. Large areas of water demand accurate play and creative shot making, and these lakes and streams are to be maintained as a wildlife sanctuary. Holes 7, 8 and 9 are cleverly guarded by a lake that comes into play on a few occasions. This lake has been stragetically designed so golfers that think it is just there for astetic beauty could get caught. Locals call it the Amen Corner of the course. Other large bodies of water with meandering features will challenge golfers throughout the round. The 18th hole brings a fantastic finish, a gentle climb with the river running along the right hand side. ‘This hole is a humdinger once you get up here and look down on the golf course, you will feel you have been blessed.’

Oceanico Faldo

Morguado do Reguengo

Surrounded by rocky outcrops and meandering water features, this Nick Faldo designed golf course is designed to test accuracy. The course is full of character - ancient olive trees, mature trees, cacti, wild herbs and desert scrub bunkers of crushed limestone. Due to its elevation in some parts, the course boasts stunning views of the Alcantarilha countryside, over the large orange groves to the mountains in the distance. Positional play is key, but there are some great risk and reward holes on offer too, especially on the earlier holes that play close to the clubhouse. There are many feature holes, particularly on the inward nine holes. Mastering the massive par 5 thirteenth, descending, with the wind behind, will demand consistent shot making all the way to the green. Holes 14 and 15 continue the challenge, playing amongst rocky outcrops. After leaving high ground to the west, the eighteenth brings the final chapter to a close with a magnificent par 5. By then, a drink in the stunning clubhouse has been well earned.

Situated in the Barrocal region of the Algarve, many call this a miniature paradise with valleys, lagoons, forests, vegetable gardens, orchards and a variety of wild animals. This championship course ranks as one of the toughest and longest of all courses in the Algarve. The testing 6,399 metres par-73 layout suits the longer hitters. The course consists of five par-5’s, nine pa-3’s and four par-4’s. Big greens and deep bunkers are common place around the course. Two lakes come into play on the front and back nine. Given the challenge on offer, it would be advised to use the practise facilities before taking on this course. On offer is a practise area, driving range, chipping green and putting green.

Alamos

Morguado do Reguengo

Alamos Opened in 2006, the Alamos course is one of the latest courses to be added to the golf portfolio in the Algarve. Lying to the north of Portimao it’s located in close proximity to Morgado do Reguengo golf course. The setting is a large 980 hectare estate through undulating small valleys. This course is designed with big putting surfaces, which places a stronger emphasis on good putting skills. In some parts, the greens are quite undulating with several tiers. Deep bunkers that are deliberately hanging close to the greens require accurate approach shots. This course is full of character and is rapidly growing in stature.

Oceanico Millennium

Oceanico Laguna

The aspect of this course leads itself to strong winds, which usually comes into play. In general, the course is fairly exposed, although some earlier holes play between pine trees - similar to the neighbouring fairways of the Old Course and Pinhal. In this more wooded area, the fairways are narrower and require greater accuracy - while the rest of the course has a clear landscape enriched by lakes at the 4th, 17th and 18th holes. Major work was put into refurbishing this course by Martin Hawtree, the renowned UK golf architect. The work commenced in May 1999 and included the complete rebuilding of the tees, greens and bunkers. Changes were made to the layout or structure of the old nine holes, but several new design features were incorporated with a view to simplifying the strategy of the course and in order to make it more golfer-friendly. The end result is an exciting 18hole course that makes it one of the main courses in Vilamoura.

This modern course is laid out over low lying coastal terrain. Its many water hazards and few trees makes it considerably different from the other courses in this area and many of its holes convey a links feel. U.S. golf architect Joseph Lee designed this course which has been subject to continual improvements over the years. Measuring 6,121 metres from the white tees, the par 72 course includes several lakes which influence play on a total of 11 holes. In addition to acting as hazards and emergency water reservoirs, these lakes serve a useful purpose in attracting a variety of aquatic birds, both resident and migratory, as well as amphibians, otters, terrapins etc. Apart from the lakes and an impressive total of 79 bunkers across this design, another hazard is the wind that frequently blows over this somewhat exposed location. Oceânico Laguna shares a large, welcoming clubhouse with the neighbouring Oceânico Millennium Course.

Oceanico Old

Oceanico Pinhal

Oceanico Old

Oceanico Pinhal

Any golf course with “old” in the name always describes a charm and a layout untouched beauty. Although this course has had a facelift of two since it opened in 1969, no major changes were made to the magnificent layout. Situated in the heart of the Vilamoura a mere 20-minute drive from Faro airport, this Frank Pennink designed parkland style layout is one of the oldest in the region and renowned all over the golfing world. Often described as the Grande Dame of Algarve courses, it meanders throughout impressive pine trees which line most of the holes. As with all Vilamoura courses, environmental protection practices are strictly adhered to by means of detailed management systems in line with guidelines established by ISO 14001 standards, Green Globe and Committed to Green programmes. This is one of the courses in Portugal that will always stay in the memory of visiting golfers. After an enjoyable 18-holes on the Old Course, a fully serviced clubhouse awaits those who feel they’ve earned a nice cold beer.

Pinhal is the second oldest golf course in the Vilamoura region. Although it was originally designed by Frank Pennink (who also designed the Old Course), several modifications were made by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in 1985. One of the major change was to lengthening the course to 6,353 metres to cater for advances in modern technology. The clubhouse was also completely renovated at the turn of the millennium, to now boast stunning panoramas from the large veranda. A game of golf at Pinhal is chatacterised by gently sloping terrain which is enclosed by numerous umbrella and Atlantic pines that tower over the fairways. There are a few waters features, like well positioned ponds but most are there to catch a very errant shot.

Quinta Do Lago South Course

Salgados Golf Course

Located close to Almancil in the heart of the Algarve lies the two golf courses at Quinta do Lago. The 6,900 par-72 South Course was designed by William Mitchell. Set in a pine forest, with small swelling hills dotting the fairways, it has hosted the Portuguese Open seven times and is a truly magnificent course. Although the course lends itself toward the better golfer, there are different tee positions on offer to cater for all categories, making the course pleasurable for all. The course regularly ranks high in global golf course rankings. It’s clever design will assess ones game, given the strategic bunkering, occasional water hazards and contoured greens.

Situated in one of the best-known regions of the Algarve, to the west of Albufeira, Salgados Golf is already a ‘postcard’ of Portuguese golf. It’s proximity of the sea and the variety of lakes make this a very interesting test of golfing skills, different from other courses in the Algarve. If you stay in the popular resort of Albufeira, a colourful fishing resort with plenty of après golf, Salgados Golf is practically on your doorstep at only 3km away. The eighteen holes at Salgados Golf are pleasant with a welcoming Club House waiting for you at the end of your round.

Pestana Vila Sol Golf Course

Quinta Do Lago North Course

Pestana Vila Sol Golf Course

In case one designer wasn’t enough, the Quinta do Lago North Course has the boasting rights of requiring two architects. The first was William Mitchell (who designed the South Course) who was responsible for 1 to 5 and 15 to 18 in 1974. The other holes were designed by Joseph Lee, which opened in 1989. The terrain was to inspire many future designs. The umbrella pine trees crop up to catch the errant golf ball, while the creeping bent grass fairways are typical to Mediterranean courses. Regular players here are convinced that a person who draws the ball will succeed best, given the anti-clockwise arrangement of the holes. Many famous golfers have walked the fairways here, including “Ryder Cup” and “Curtis Cup” team members, who have been euphoric in their praise for this course, as it takes its place as one of the top courses along the coast.

The magnificent 27-hole course at Pestana Vila Sol Spa & Golf Resort is surrounded by a vast 150 hectares. The resort is situated in the heart of one of the most highly developed tourist areas in the Algarve. It has stunning natural surroundings with a vast range of fauna, animal and plant life. At Pestana Vila Sol Golf you will find a fabulous Donald Steel design, which stretches along a wide valley, naturally sculpted by Mother Nature and divided into three loops with three different levels of difficulty: Prime, Challenge and Prestige. Pestana Vila Sol Golf has twice played host to the Portuguese Open, in 1992 and 1993. It was honoured by the Green Globe organisation in 1996 with the Green Flag award, certification of meeting their environmental requirements.

Vale de Lobo - Ocean Course

Vale de Lobo - Royal Course

The Ocean Golf Course features undulating fairways which run alongside nature reserve, before leading gently down to the shores of the Atlantic. Its emblematic holes are two challenging and spectacular Par 4s, the 11th and the 14th – which treat golfers to some of the most spectacular views in the Algarve – and the Par 3 15th, which runs alongside the beach. Playing to your handicap on The Ocean course is a difficult task, due to the challenging design and distracting beauty that it provides.

The Royal Golf Course has rolling fairways set amidst pine trees and beautiful lakes surrounded by wild flowers. Its features include the almost island green of the 9th and the famous 16th, with cliff-top carryover – one of the most celebrated golfing images in the world, which has become the veritable symbol of golf in the Algarve. But there are many other challenges along its length, in particular numerous narrow fairways, bordered by age-old pine forest, which make the Royal a real test of a golfer’s accuracy and concentration. This course was designed by top American golf architect Rocky Roquemore, based on original drawings made by Sir Henry Cotton.

Pinheiros Altos

Just outside the popular region of Albufeira is the popular Balaia golf course. A nine hole gem that will test every golfer, irrespective of their handicap. With holes ranging in distance from 67 metres to 160 metres, the course will test your distance control and short game. From the very start, the beauty of this course is apparent as the first hole is surrounded by two lakes that are divided by an old wooden bridge. Full Clubhouse facilities are available after your round.

A relatively new course within the Quinta do Lago estate, Pinheiros Altos is an independent 27-hole course designed by Ronald Fream and Jorge Santana. The course has an unusual layout with three nines of contrasting character -- ‘The Pines’, ‘The Corks’ and ‘The Olives’. The Pines, as its name suggests, meanders through typical Algarvian pine woods whereas many water hazards must be negotiated coming home. The rest is much flatter but the holes work their way through a series of lakes requiring accurate driving and precise iron play. The greens have a reputation for being the most difficult to read and to hit because they are small and undulating and usually in very good condition. The course embraces part of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, making this another course of beauty and challenge for players of all standards.

Benamor

Quinta do Vale

Officially opened in March 2000, this course is the first golf course to open east of the capital of the Algarve, Faro, and lies just outside of Tavira. The owning Martins Dias family invited the late Sir Henry Cotton make a concept design for an 18-hole course. Sir Henry was inspired by the beautiful church next to the site of the Clubhouse and by its spectacular location. The final result is a delightful par 71 golf course of 5,500metres. Benamor offers all golfers a pleasant test of golf. The course is undulating but not hilly. The views of the mountains to the North and the Atlantic Ocean to the South are stunning. The greens, tees and fairways are always kept in good condition. Players’ accuracy is particularly called upon by the architects’ retention of as many of the old trees as feasible. These natural obstacles coupled with strategic placed bunkers and occasional water hazards make the course a worthwhile challenge.

Designed by Severiano Ballesteros, Quinta do Vale Golf Resort features an 18-hole Championship layout including 6 Par-5´s, 6 Par-4´s and 6 Par-3´s. The course has Bermuda grass fairways, Bent grass greens and the rough is abundant with Festuca & Ryegrass. Marvellously integrated into the landscape and with a great view over the Guadiana River, Quinta do Vale Golf Club sits in a natural valley and is always overlooked from the Clubhouse. At Quinta do Vale, players will notice Seve´s creativity as well as his promise: To please everyone no matter what their handicap is. Numerous dogleg holes, wide fairways and obstacles enhance the course quality and its breath-taking surroundings…

Belas

Lisbon Sports Club

Belas is a unique golf course. The layout is extraordinary, with several fairways and greens set in deep valleys, and it affords unforgettable panoramic scenery to golfers and visitors. The course was designed by the renowned golf course architect Rocky Roquemore. It has five lakes throughout its winding layout, fed by various small and picturesque waterfalls. The course measures 6,380 off the back tees, providing a tough par-72 layout. With its excellent variety of holes, the course is a pleasure to play, whatever one’s handicap level. It demands both skill and tactical play, and is acknowledged both locally and internationally as one of Portugal’s best constructed layouts. The course also boasts a driving range and two practice putting greens. The clubhouse offers all the services necessary for a championship course.

Originally Lisbon Sports Club dates back to 1880, when a group of English residents living in the Lisbon area, founded a Sports Club. By 1890 they had built a small six hole golf course in Alges. Then in 1962 the Club moved to Casal de Carregueira, where it remains today situated about 20 km from Cascais and Lisbon. The Martin Hawtree course was inaugurated with nine holes, five more holes were added a few years later and then finally in 1992 its eighteen holes were completed. A 5,278 metre par-69 layout means it is a playable course for all. The narrow fairways lined with beautiful old trees and abundant vegetation blend in perfectly with the natural surroundings. There is a comfortable Club House with its veranda overlooking the magnificent woodland.

Golf do Estoril

Oeiras Golf & Residences

Golf do Estoril is a championship course with bags of history and fame. One of the oldest golf courses in Portugal, Golf do Estoril offers its visitors spectacular views over the Atlantic Ocean. It has become internationally famous because of its location close to the luxury seaside resort of Estoril and has long attracted some of the top names in world golf. The course has been used on numerous occasions for the Portuguese Open, as well as for international amateur championships. It is a short but challenging course, designed by Mackenzie Ross, who made excellent use of the surrounding pine-trees and eucalyptuses – which, coupled with the uneven terrain, make the course more a test of accuracy than of the ability to hit the ball long distances. The course is popular with golfers, so the addition of a second 9-holes is an additional benefit.

Opened in early 2011, this new 18-hole golf course is located in Oeiras, between Estoril and Lisbon. It’s a par-71 course, with a total of 5,857 metres, designed by Santana da Silva. This new is sure to be an exciting addition to the portfolio of golf courses in Lisbon, as plans are well under way to have a club house, golf academy, hotel, housing, shopping and dining area and parks, all spread across an impressive 1,120,000 m2 piece of land.

Come golfing in Sesimbra – A vibrant golf destination full of life.

Located only 40 minutes drive south of Lisbon, the small fishing village of Sesimbra has blossomed into somewhat of a tourism destination in its own right. Sesimba is a picturesque fishing town is located in a quiet little bay that is protected by the prominent Arrábida hill range that shield it from harsh northerly winds. In yester years, Sesimbra was primarily know as a quiet fishing villiage, reliant by domestic tourism. In recent times, there has been a surge of tourists heading to the increasingly popular region in South Lisbon. The sheltered bay has proven popular with tourists purchasing holiday or weekend homes. The calm waters and long sandy Sesimbra beach, that was awarded with a Blue Flag in 2010, are perfect for children to play safely. Watersports, deep sea fishing and golf have also proven prospered in the warm Portuguese climate.

But Sesimbra traditionally is a fishing village. Its harbour is busy with fishing boats and local fishermen proudly display their daily catches, as mini fish markets create a unique atmosphere. This wealth of excellent local cuisine, specialising in shellfish and fresh fish draws many from afar to sample the daily catches in the numerous local restaurants. Other culinary delights that deserve a special mention are: Cheese from Azeitão, Moscatel wine from Setúbal and honey from Arrábida, which are all amongst the mouth-watering flavours of this region.

History abounds the hills around Sesimbra as Castelo de Sesimbra, a 17th Century Moorish Castle, guards the town. The castle had fallen into disrepair, until the state took the initiative to invest in the complete refurbishment and restoration of the castle to its former glory, which now provides its current structure. A few kilometres away to the West is a dramatic cliff top, or to the East is a virtually unspoilt nature reserve. Further down the road you will find the popular town of Setúbal, popular with tourists. Aroeira I

Ribagolfe II

Aoeira I is located 20 minutes from Lisbon, to the south of the River Tagus, Aroeira offers golfers the perfect combination of a championship course set amidst exuberant natural surroundings. Frank Pennink designed this course in a pinewood dotted with wild flowers, which is a nature reserve inhabited by many different species of birds. Because of its densely wooded nature, the British press have christened this course the “Lisbon Wentworth, due to its similarity with the famous golf course near London. In 1996 and 1997, Aroeira hosted the Portuguese Open on the European Tour. Make sure not to leave the area before taking some time to contemplate the vast expanse of sand, sea and sky close to the course at Costa de Caparica, a beach that lies at the foot of a fossile reef (a protected natural area).

Because of the nature of its terrain, environmental characteristics and specific layout, this golfing complex rivals the best courses that Europe has to offer and occupies a third of the area of the Vargem Fresca Estate. Ribagolfe II is an 18-hole par 72 course designed by Michael King, a formed European Tour player. As with Ribagolfe I, Cork Oak-Trees are common place on this course. The wider fairways and lower yardage makes this a little more favourable than its sister course to members and higher handicaps. But, water hazards and contoured greens make it an enjoyable challenge.

Troia

A new course in the Lisbon area, this course has a fairly different concept of golf from Aroeira I, consisting of large fast greens. Despite the inviting nature of its greens, the course becomes increasingly difficult as you work your way around the front nine. Unlike its older sister course, the new course has bunkers on the fairways, some of them in the Scottish style of pot bunkers. But the sand traps are not the only obstacle that have to be taken into account as the course also have five large lakes, water is a fairly constant hazard, particularly at the last nine holes.

Designed by the famous golf course architect Robert Trent Jones, Troia Golf Championship Course is a real gem. It is located on the Troia Peninsula, with the dramatic backdrop of the Arrabida mountain range. This course is often described as one of the most fascinating in Portugal, and was ranked as high as #25 from a Top100 course ranking by Golf World. The course is located at just 30 minutes south of Lisbon and about two hours north of the Algarve. Its not overplayed and has a wild but natural beauty. This course is also located close the many famous beaches that spread along the Tróia peninsula.

Oporto

Quinta do Fojo

Porto’s links course portfolio is boosted by a genuine links course with deeply rooted values and traditions. Inaugurated in 1890, this par-71 course plays to a professional length of 5640 metres. This would be slightly shorter than modern day courses, but what’s lost in length on this old style course, is made up on narrow and undulating fairways, with strong northerly winds.

In stark contrast to the bigger courses in the area, Quinta do Fojo is a pleasant 6-hole course that plays to a total of par-60, when played three times. Unveiled in 1997, this enjoyable course is located across the river from Porto, which proves popular for midweek golfers to practise their shots on the shorter holes. Quinta do Fojo is a golf course you visit to sharpen your short game and every golfer could do with that.

The course is located 17 kilometres south of Porto, close to the wonderful beaches of Espinho. As part of the “Espinho Golf Week”, Oporto Golf Club has been hosting a competition called the “Skeffington Cup” since 1891 without any intermission. This is arguably the oldest golf club competition in the world, again reiterating its values and traditions.

With the towering mountains of Marao and Aboboreira as its backdrop, the setting of Amarante course is typical of the stunning mountaineous scenery of Northern Portugal. Vidago Palace

Estela

Introduced in 1936, Vidago Palace is an established golf course that plays an important role in the golf product of northern Portugal. The new layout was redesigned by Cameron & Powell, often praised for their specialist work in golf course design. They extended the course to a full eighteen hole, par-72 layout, that kept with the overall visual and spiritual charm of its natural smooth terrain. But Vidago Palace saves the best to last, as the final four holes are nothing short of breath taking, boasting fantastic views of its panorama, the Vidago Palace and the remote villages in the distance. This is certainly worth a visit when in the area.

It’s a simple fact that Irish golfers love a quality links course. At Estela Golf Course, you won’t be disappointed. Excluding the use of Bermuda grass, this is a course that ranks as high as the best links courses in Ireland. This prestigious links course is considered one of the top 10 courses in Portugal and has already hosted two European Tour events, namely the Portuguese Open in 1991 and the Atlântico-Vinho Verde Open in 1990.

Vale Pisáo

Quinta da Barca

The Vale Pisão Golf Course has 9 holes (par 37 with 3266 meters) putting green and a practice range. The course layout follows the aesthetics of the terrain, fitting in naturally with the landscape and taking advantage of the slopes, the vegetation and the streams. This gives a varied layout, with interesting and balanced challenges, where shorter holes, of evident beauty and strategy, are mixed with more difficult, complicated holes. Designed to protect environmental values, the features of the Vale Pisão Golf Course, make it ideal for playing golf at the top level in terms of quantity, quality and variety.

In 1997, Quinta da Barca 9-hole course was opened for general play. It’s gentle design but playing at over 3800 metres from the back tees, this is not a simple course by any means. The greens can be quite undulating and cleverly placed bunkers and lakes provide obstacles to achieving a good score. For the second round of nine holes, there are a completely different set of tee boxes.

98 | Destination Golf Portugal

Set in a magnificent setting along a river bank, the course is located at Esposende. The course is supported by a marina, spa, restaurants, shopping malls, and two aparthotels with a swimming-pool and tennis courts.
