L&M had an illuminating and informative interview with Patricia Relats, the Content Director at Buenos Aires Film Commission; she tells us all about filming in Argentina, the local support, film tourism and much more. Excerpts from the interview. What are the major advantages of filming in Argentina or Buenos Aires? Buenos Aires is the fourth worldwide city that is most use as a set. It’s flexibility in order to become any other place, it’s architecture and its talents support its constant growth. We have great governmental support and commendable diversity of locations; all these factors go a long way in making Argentina a great filming location.

What are the local support systems production support services available?

or

Benefits include exemption of tax payment, the companies that are radiated in the Audiovisual District, don’t have to pay local taxes and this includes the whole chain of value. All the audiovisual companies addressed in Buenos Aires City, according to their billing level are framed in the category of “PYME” (Small and Medium Enterprises), and can enjoy a special benefit related to the IIBB (municipal tax). On the other hand, companies (whether national or international) involved in the audiovisual industry and addressed in the Audiovisual District have the benefit of being free of other certain municipal taxes (IIBB, ABL and Sello) for fifteen years (national companies) and for ten years (international companies). So, there are a lot of perks in the offering, and this certainly goes a long way in placing us as a favored destination for filming

How are you planning to promote the country through film tourism and what can you offer to make it more attractive and reachable? We are developing a Discount Card for international producers and we also provide scouting services for free for interested filmmakers.

Are you willing to offer familiarization trips for the producers to explore the locations and promote the destination? Yes, we can organize familiarization trips for international producers.

What are the other areas which you would like to highlight which benefit the film makers, honeymooners, MICE, corporates etc. BUENOS AIRES is a Cosmopolitan city, with an intense cultural and artistic life, which has made it one of the most important tourist destinations in Latin America. In many aspects it can be easily compared to important European cities. Argentina welcomes you! L&M had a small rendezvous with the Chairman of National Institute of Tourist Promotion in Argentina, Leonardo Boto. Excerpts from the interview Your views on Argentina as a filming destination?

Leonardo Boto Chairman of National Institute of Tourist Promotion in Argentina

12

Leonardo Boto: Argentina is a large country, the 8th largest in the world, with very different geographic regions, home to a high biodiversity of species, a variety of landscapes and climates. Many international films have been shot in Argentina as directors are very fond of the diversity the country offers. When a country can boast of great cities, history, culture, mountains, glaciers, waterfalls, lakes, a magnificent countryside, authentic experiences and so many other factors it becomes a very favourable destination to shoot a movie. Although it’s a relatively new destination for the Indian market, Indian filmmakers will see that it offers a wide selection of options, and this I’m sure will interest them. Also, the fact that filmmakers always want to espy unexplored places for their movies works for Argentina. We look forward to welcome the Indian film industry to come and explore this wonderful country.

LOCATIONS & MORE NOVEMBER 2013

We’d also like to bring to your notice that we have quite a few producers and filmmakers wanting to shoot in Argentina, will you be willing to provide familiarization trips to them? We have seen good interest from the Indian film industry. We thank them for their support and would be absolutely delighted to welcome the Indian Filmmakers to Argentina.

Last Words on Argentina: “Argentina is a dream for destination travellers and they have been fascinated with the marvellous scenery, the vibrant cities, variety of cuisine along with wine tourism bundled with adventure, sport and entertainment. They can plan fantastic and unique itineraries with the amazing array of opportunities available. This allows them to fulfill all their deepest desires and to pursue what makes their heart beat faster! Financial Incentives provided All the audiovisual companies addressed in Buenos Aires City, according to their billing level are framed in the category of “PYME” (Small and Medium Enterprises), can enjoy a special benefit related to the IIBB (municipal tax). Services provided to location scouts In special cases, the Film Commission can organize locations scoutings that consists in showing to producers and foreign directors interesting locations (sometimes more specific, sometimes more exploratory) the city offers to film, and also supplier companies such as laboratories, postproduction or rental houses.

Services provided to production

companies while shooting The Buenos Aires Film Commission provides personalized counseling for the national and international industry, and looks forward to work as an important link between international producers and the local industry or other entities needed to be contacted for any specific audiovisual project, fulfilling the demands and easing the work of producers, providing logistical assistance, professional information, access to images bank, shooting permits and personalized advice according to each project´s specifications.

The major cultural differences producers can expect Producers that work here don’t find any counterproductive differences. On the contrary, they find our city and our people very easy going and very professional and profitable to work with. The language is not a problem at all because the local population has an excellent level of English, and the crews that work in Production Services in Buenos Aires are bilingual.

Ancillary joys one could find in Buenos Aires: i.e., food, wine BUENOS AIRES is a Cosmopolitan city, with an intense cultural and artistic life, which has made it one of the most important tourist destinations in Latin America.

In many aspects it can be easily compared to important European cities. The spectacle of football is very important and traditional in the city, and worth living it. And of course our Tango also worth to be seen.

WORKING VISA If the local production company says they do need the working visa and need advice on the procedure, the Film Commission can help you with that. Residency takes ten working days and you have to ask for an online turn for it. Foreign companies can only have two working visas, and the rest must be done through a local one. If you need to be in the country more than six month, you have to ask for a temporary residency.

BRINGING EQUIPMENT INTO THE COUNTRY

PERMITS Productions need filming permits if they need to shoot in public places. If you don’t shoot in public places, you’ll need permits to: • Park the trucks or motorhomes • Park the electricity generator equipment if needed • For the general circulation cut of a street. Permits have to be worked and obtained only through a local Production Company, they can´t be extended to a person or company that is not addressed in Argentina.

CREW AND EQUIPMENT If they need to hire local crew and local equipment, the payment must be done through a local production company. You will find the costs for rent are affordable and they have state of the art equipment.

In legal terms, common passengers are not supposed to bring into the country any equipment that may be use for industrial or commercial purposes. And it is (not written in any law, but) implicitly understood by Customs that common passengers may bring up to aprox. U$D 5.000.in technological advices, but only if it seems to be used for personal entertainment purposes. Anyway, the other option, if you want to bring in the equipment, proved to be used for industrial purposes, you need to run a “Temporary Import”, including declared costs and serial numbers of all the advices and providing a warranty on everything. For the development of this procedure you are going to need a special Customs Broker working for you, and this Broker has to be hired through a local production company.

World Heritage Sites Admire the beauties that also belong to you UNESCO “World Heritage Sites” are places of natural beauty or artistic expression that we should protect and promote due to their natural or cultural outstanding universal value. In all regions of Argentina there is at least one world heritage beauty. In Buenos Aires, you can breathe tango –the most Argentine of artistic expressions—while walking along its traditional avenues and around every corner. In 2009, tango made UNESCO’s Cultural World Heritage list, in the Intangible Cultural Heritage category. In Córdoba, you’ll find the Jesuit legacy at the Jesuit Block and the Jesuit Ranches, illustrating a unique religious, social and economic experience that is a World Heritage Site since 1984.

A trip to the past In Argentina, aboard old trains, you can take a trip to the past and learn about railroad stories and legends. Tourist trains invite you to touch the Northern sky with your hands, go deep into the Misiones rainforest, enjoy the Litoral landscape in Entre Ríos, travel around the northern suburbs of Buenos Aires, and feel like a Patagonian pioneer on your way to the south. Argentina’s most modern railroad, the Tren de la Costa, travels along the residential northern suburbs of Greater Buenos Aires, from the Maipú Station, only a few meters away from the Presidential Residence in Olivos, up to the Delta Station. Along the charming eleven stations –Barrancas is the most remarkable one, with its Antiques Fair–, you can enjoy the traditional Englishstyle architecture of the area. The journey, along the De La Plata River, is lovely.

Koffee with

Karti

L&M

had a tête-à-tête with Karti who was in Bangalore to promote his latest film All in All Azhaga Raja, the thorough gentleman is also quite the sought after crowd puller, the commotion in the mall he visited stood proof to his popularity and fan following down south. Here he shares with us all about his movie All in All Azhagu Raja, working with Kajal Aggarwal and his much-anticipated next flick “Biriyani”. Excerpts from the interview How was the experience working with Kajal Aggarwal again? - We’ve been good friends since we first started working together, we’ve come together after Naan Mahaan Alla, it’s after about 3 years and she’s done like 30 films by now and I’ve done just three after that, so I’m like what’s happening! (laughs) On a more serious note, I saw how much more professional she has become now and how keen she is on particular things like dialogues. There is so much scope for her to perform in this film; it’s a very meaty role, so she has taken a lot of strain in understanding the dialogues and delivering it perfectly, this was also very important as one of the most special things about the director of the film are his dialogues. And as she plays a small town girl, we’ve concentrated a lot on her body language, her character is a girl who feels that the world should be happy that I’m born in this place, So yea, it’s come together really well and we had a lot of fun shooting for the film as most of scenes were comedy scenes so it was great working together. 46

LOCATIONS & MORE NOVEMBER 2013

How was it playing a role from the 80’s, imitating an Icon like Prabhu on screen? -Well initially I was very reluctant, even before shooting started I said can I just play myself and not try to imitate him, like can I just imagine it as my dad’s story and we could get away with that, but the director was very adamant that he wants me to impersonate Prabhu, but it was great, turned out to be really challenging and it’s become the USP of the film, people are enjoying the songs. I was wondering how youngsters who’re 18 and 20 would react to these songs but it seems to fare well with everyone, and all age groups are liking it.

Looks like you had to put on a lot of weight for this role. -No actually, I’ve used a bodysuit because I could not afford to put on weight as I was doing another film simultaneously. Not that I’m very fit (laughs) but I had to look a little heavy to play him, so we bought the same wig and I had to rely totally on my makeup artist and costumier all the time, and we also brought

in all the costumes which he wore back then as we had references of his earlier films so a lot of effort went into that.

How different is All In All Azhagu Raja from the movies you’ve done so far? -It’s set up in a small town, I’ve never acted in a small town flick before and the characterization is really funny because it’s

about a guy who runs a small local TV channel that nobody watches, mine and Santhanam’s character run the channel and do all the programs ourselves and there’s nobody even slightly interested in it so that itself gives it a lot of scope for the fun element to kick in and then the 80’s portion is quite a highlight as well and not to miss Santhanam’s character, he’s got two different roles and three different get ups, he has also portrayed a lady’s character. So all these factors I think gives the film a lot of mileage and when families go in to watch it on a Diwali weekend, they’re going to have a lot of fun, it’s going to be a laugh riot.

and because of this ends up in trouble all the time. This will also be the first time I’m doing an out and out ultra modern film and look.

Tell us something about upcoming film “Biriyani”.

How was it working with Rajesh?

your

-Biriyani is a very stylish flick, very Venkat Prabhu film. It’s a total contrast to what I’ve done here, here it’s a small town guy, very clumsy whereas in Biriyani it’s a very stylish look, with spiked up hair and uber cool clothing, he’s a playboy, he gets along very well with women

We’re very curious, why “Biriyani” for the title? -Why not Biriyani? People have been going gaga about it; everyone’s asking what’s with the title? Well, the film changes when they set out to eat biriyani, like we all do, after clubbing at night, we all go hunting for biriyani, similarly they go searching for it and the quest for biriyani changes their life. So, it’s very significant in the storyline of the movie and hence the name.

-Rajesh is brilliant with comedy and he is a very particular taskmaster who clearly knows what he wants, he had etched out every actor quite explicitly. He knows how I was acting so far; he said I don’t want any of the expressions you’ve done so far, let’s do something completely new. Not just with me, you will also notice the

Challenges by land In Argentina, there are many areas suitable for activities such as trekking, mountaineering, rappelling, horse riding and mountain biking. Trekking is an interesting and exciting adventure. You will feel the vertigo of walking with crampons on the Perito Moreno Glacier in the province of Santa Cruz; explore the thousands of hectares of open air salt flats of Salinas Grandes, in Salta and Jujy; climb the colorful northern hills of the Calchaquí Valleys in the Norte Region. For demanding mountaineers, Argentina presents several options. You can practice any of the mountaineering disciplines such as climbing –on rock or ice–, rappelling, canyoning or ski-mountaineering in some of the highest peaks in the Americas. Riding a mountain bike you can explore the steepest lands in Argentina. From Ushuaia to La Quiaca, thousands of kilometers challenge your bike and your legs, in circuits with different intensity levels, from the deep Patagonian forests to the colorful mountain ranges of the Norte region. The horse, an animal closely related to the rural man and culture in Argentina, is also a synonym of adventure. Following a guide (or “baqueano”), join in tours several days long around the Andes; watch cattle herding the way gauchos do it; and walk around the semiarid Andes in Salta, San Juan, Mendoza and Neuquén.

Property Watch

This edition we are covering Courtyard by Marriott, Chakan, this uniquely placed, startling property is quite a sight. Set in Pune’s

Ritu Chawla General Manager, Courtyard by Marriott Pune Chakan

auto and manufacturing hub, Courtyard by Marriott Pune Chakan redefines luxury and quality. Strategically located in the Northwest corridor of Pune, the hotel is a one-stop destination for corporate travelers; offering excellent services, state-of-the-art technology and best-in-class amenities. L&M interviewed the General Manager of Courtyard by Marriott, Chakan, Ritu Chawla. Excerpts from the interview.

Firstly, congratulations on the launch of Courtyard by Marriott, how has the response been so far? There has been a warm and welcoming response! Marriott monopolizes the hospitality scenario in Pune, with a hotel servicing every key business district of the city. This is the fourth addition to the Marriott family in the City. Marriott in Pune is a household name and we have generated some great interest being the first international star rated hotel to enter the virgin belt of Chakan. The hotel product has met with great feedback and if you were to see the looming property off the highway you would certainly agree, its 3 acres of green oasis in a desert or more poetically put ‘a rose among the thorns’. We have had some encouraging online feedback and extensive media coverage since our opening. Good long stay occupancies from Foreigner guests itself is a sign that it has appealed to the international taste in terms of our rooms, public areas and the food and beverage offerings. We are also overwhelmed with the non-resident footfalls from the Corporates around during lunches; as in a busy business district we bring an International dining option that did not exist. 54

LOCATIONS & MORE NOVEMBER 2013

What’s the Courtyard’s USP? What’s the Market penetration policy? The USP of the Courtyard is multifold, strategic location of the hotel in the midst of the automobile and industrial belt of Chakan, enhanced technology in terms of individual wifi hubs in every room and In Building solutions for improved mobile coverage. Courtyard by Marriott Pune Chakan is Gold LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified by the US Green Building Council helping create a greener carbon foot print. Brand new modern architecture and state of the art technology both in rooms and banquets add to its uniqueness. The hotel has the potential of being a Corporate hotel the entire week and then transforming itself to an Urban Resort over the Weekends, owing to its proximity to holiday locations like Lonavala / Lavassa etc, and the fact that it is in the Pune city yet away from the hustle bustle, the multiple indoor and outdoor spaces for dining and recreation, ample natural light and unique food & beverage; and team building options for Corporates creates the WOW factor. Market penetration for Courtyard Chakan

is about creating awareness in the corporate world, with neighboring business districts of Chakan, Talegaon, Khed, Rajgurunagar, Moshi and Bhosari covered aggressively by the hotels’ sales team on a regular basis for year round contracting of corporate deals that are customized for every customer. The hotel also banks on the Marriott India Sales force to cover corporate accounts spread across India. Key source markets being reached out to are Mumbai, NCR, Bangalore, Chennai because of their auto mobile manufacturing connections. Other businesses being mapped are travel trade in Mumbai and Pune, MICE organizers, Associations and Medical / Doctors conferences for small and medium sized events for weekends and offsites. International market penetration is done primarily through the Marriott networking channels and pricing tools available, we also have invested in GDS marketing and online marketing to get the right message out to the changing target profile.

What is a must try dish at Courtyard? A signature dish. True to our Courtyard brand, the food menu encompasses the local cuisine culture of the Kolhapur belt of Maharashtra. Our

Signature dish Kolhapuri Spiced Chicken Pizza is popular. We recommend that you try the menu offerings at the MoMo Café to get a firsthand experience.

What was the theme or significant aspect in mind when going about the interiors of the Hotel? The hotel being in the Industrial belt of Chakan, takes from the designs of factories and plants around the location. High ceilings, using lot of natural light, glass and steel gives it the modern straight line finish that one associates with such a location. The fact that the hotel is in a manufacturing location, has made it more responsible towards the carbon foot prints. The building is a benchmark in the International ASHRAE norm, by utilization of energy efficient glazing, building wall and roof materials. It has used highly recycled materials and local manufactured building materials and

low-VOC paints, adhesive, sealants, primer, coating etc. As the hotel has a number of indoor and outdoor locations that it uses for its guests, the interiors used are shades of green which it borrows from the outside neighboring grasslands. The hotel epitomizes modern structure with contemporary design admired by each genre of traveler.

Do you have any promotional events lined up in order to promote Courtyard? If yes, could you elaborate? Food & beverage promotions are a regular feature at the Courtyard. Courtyard believes in an engaging F&B concept that draws guests out of their guestrooms and lures them downstairs to hang out at the Momo bar, nosh at the Momo to go or socialize pretty much anywhere and everywhere in the hotel. The two concepts that we are promoting to create a buzz in this belt are Wednesday Al fresco Bbq Nites and the Sunset Hours @ Chakan. We believe that a corporate

soon after work before hitting the peak city traffic could under one roof find things to do which he would otherwise miss. Health and wellness facilities are an exciting option for the working professionals – we offer you a state of the art Gym as well as a Pool to unwind. After a refreshing swim step down to a round of drinks with friends over a live match and then soon after a fun networking evening, carry some home made fresh breads and bakes for home. If entertaining clients, let us help you make an impression with our Alfresco Bbq evenings – a value for money outdoor experience of Indian and International grills.

Are you open to support filming in the property? Yes, we believe that the hotel can be an ideal location for film shoots. Built on 3 acres of land with a charming arrival experience and many indoor and outdoor venues, it is the right choice for shootings or to house actors and senior crew that travel for shoots.

Argentina, it’s got everything! Medha Sampat of Knack Marketing and the India Representative for National Institute of Tourist Promotion in Argentina enlightens us about Argentina and why it is an ideal filming and tourist destination all year round. Excerpts from the interview

Medha Sampat India representative INPROTUR

How big is tourism from India to Argentina? Argentina is a vast and very diverse country and enjoys favourable climate through the year. The country offers some amazing attractions to travellers. Argentina is a niche and relatively a new destination for the Indian traveller. Currently we have approximately 5000 Indians that travel to Argentina every year. This number is looking more positive and growing continuously as the Indian traveller is being exposed to this fantastic country. We have seen a great interest from travellers who are looking for fresh and bold experiences, and Argentina falls into this category. Although Argentina is a long haul destination we have seen some MICE movement from India. According to the ICCA worldwide rankings Buenos Aires holds the number one position in America and Argentina is the most visited country in South America. More than 5 million tourists arrive in Buenos Aires every year. What are the major attractions in Argentina? Argentina is a destination which offers ample opportunity to experience the stunning natural surroundings, participate in active adventure sports and discover a culture that is rich in history, tradition and an appreciation of life’s pleasures. 58

LOCATIONS & MORE NOVEMBER 2013

The country is an absolute delight to travellers and offers some extraordinary attractions like the majestic Perito Moreno glacier – the progressive glacier in the world where travellers can watch the miraculous sight of the ice collapsing, the energetic Iguazu falls-named as one of the 7 natural wonders of the world, the stunning wine regions with a backdrop of snow capped peaks that represent different wine routes along the Andes Mountains, Ushuaia commonly known as ‘the end of the world’. Argentina is the birthplace of Tango and is like the dance itself it is elegant, exquisite, seductive and busting with excited energy. Travellers will experience breathtaking scenery, stays in luxury accommodations, meals in gourmet restaurants, fine wines and enjoy Argentina’s well-deserved reputation for hospitality. What are your future plans to promote tourism in Argentina in India? Argentina is a new destination and we are seeing a huge interest in the destination. We have been encouraging and assisting the travel trade in packaging various products that can be offered to the Indian traveller. The destination offers an assortment of products which can be packaged in an innovative way, so it is important to educate the trade on this amazing destination. FAM trips have been undertaken and the Indian travel trade has been made to experience the destination. We would like Indians to spend maximum time in exploring Argentina as a mono destination due to the variety and quality options it has to offer. There’s something for everyone...

Which is your most favourite holidaying destination in Argentina, one you would strongly recommend to visiting tourists? And why? It’s a very difficult question as the country offers so much. A big favourite is the capital city which is full of life – Buenos Aires, where you will find everything. It starts with the picture perfect old neighbourhood is surrounded with romantic restaurants and a thumping nightlife. The Buenos Aires European heritage is evident in its architecture and Latin America's shopping capital offers the promise of premium retail therapy along its grand, wide boulevards. The Iguazu falls – one of the natural Seven Wonders of the World, where you will feel the energy and see a really giant waterfall. The huge waterfalls and the dazzling scenery is a very special experience by itself. Here the Iguazu power can be felt at the ‘Devils Throat’ where 275 waterfalls drop from a great height. You are actually so close to the falls that it feels like you are in them. The Perito Moreno glacier which comes to life when you can actually watch it collapse, cruise around it and finally you can take a little walk on this masterpiece. Are you open to co-production and sponsorship opportunities like Spain that tied up with a Bollywood film “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” which went on to promote Spain as a top tourist destination in India. Medha Sampat: We are always open to such opportunities. You are aware that Argentina has immense potential to create a visually spectacular movie. I am sure that film makers will use this destination to their advantage to create a magical movie.

Celebrations, Festivities & Festivals

The numerous national and international celebrations, festivities and festivals in Argentina reflect the diverse cultural, religious, production and artistic expressions of the different regions. These celebrations will definitely enrich your journey. The province of Buenos Aires is the center of many traditionalcelebrations and festivals linked to the culture of countryside people, such as the Fiesta de la Tradición (Traditional Festival), celebrated every November in San Antonio de Areco. In Córdoba, you can discover the German legacy in the Fiesta Nacional de la Cerveza (Oktoberfest). In Cuyo, every February people celebrate culture and history in the Fiesta del Sol (Sun Celebration), in San Juan; and in Mendoza, in March you can honor the wineproducing industry in the Fiesta de la Vendimia (Grape Harvest Festival). In the Litoral, you can enjoy the most joyful and colorful music: dance the chamamé and practice “catch and release” fishing in the Fiesta Nacional del Dorado (National Golden Dorado Festival), in the province of Corrientes; in Misiones, you can learn to prepare a good mate during the first fifteen days of November in the Fiesta Nacional de la Yerba Mate (National Yerba Mate Festival).

In the Norte, you can become the star of the most picturesque popular festivities: in January you can participate in the Copleros Meeting in Purmamarca; celebrate the independence of Argentina in July during the Independence Celebration. Tango, literature, cuisine, music, film and theatre can all be found here. Let yourself be seduced by this unique mixture, where culture beats to an intense rhythm, and participate in the renowned international festivals offered by this city. You can be part of the Tango Dance Festival and the Tango World Championship, the Independent Film Festival (BAFICI), and the International Theater Festival of Buenos Aires (FIBA). In Córdoba, get captivated by the large variety of popular festivals taking place all year to save, promote and celebrate the most local and typical traditions, for instance, the National Folklore Festival in Cosquín, and the National Celebration of Horse Breaking-In and Folklore in Jesús María. And in the Patagonia, you can receive autumn in your best outfit at the Festival at the End of the World, a celebration of classical music in the southernmost city in the world: Ushuaia. General Characteristics Due to the extension of the country, its geographical location, and different latitudes and altitudes, Argentina presents climatic characteristics that greatly differ from one region to the other. Like other South American countries below the equator, Argentina’s winter lasts from July to October, while the summer goes from December to March. The winter is cold and rainy and the days grow shorter, therefore, we recommend visiting the north and northwest regions during this time, since there is less rainfall and heat there during this season. The summers are hot and humid and the days are longer, making the Patagonia and southern Andes ideal vacation spots. The sea regulates the temperature in the majority of the country’s costal cities so there is not much difference between the minimum and maximum temperatures. This is the case in Buenos Aires. For many people the ideal months to visit Argentina are in the spring and fall since the climate at this time remains relatively warm.
