Introduction The Canberra Project is a collaborative, multi-platform documentary project. The Canberra Project will feature collaborations between communities and filmmakers and photographers in residence. This is a unique model of engagement and participation through media. We work with communities, facilitating local people to use digital media to tell meaningful stories about their lives. The project is shaped through consultations to create portraits, digital stories and short films – full of humour and belonging. Our goal is to inspire others to connect their suburb / town communities across the ACT region.
Scope of the Project The Canberra Project will encompass a series of mini – documentaries, digital stories and photo – media about people, places and icons which exist in the suburbs and towns of the Canberra region.
Description of the Canberra Project Our vision is to inspire people to share their stories about their community – to create a diverse and surprising picture of life in the suburbs of Canberra. The result product will include a series of short films, digital stories and rich imagery – which can be presented on a web-based platform. From this platform, people will make a connection with the local heroes who care for and shape our community – to create a diverse and surprising picture of life in the suburbs of Canberra.
Strategic objectives, which relate to this objective To meet every day people of our region and discover their stories, hopes and dreams; why they live in Canberra and what Canberra means to them. Identify the main target audience People of all ages and cultural backgrounds will be featured in the Canberra Project and our target audience will appeal to audiences of 13+
What are the intended outcomes / deliverables of the project? The Canberra Project (which will be hosted on it’s own web platform) will include more than fifty selected suburbs and towns of the Canberra region and each suburb will contain rich mixed media including photo and video documentary of the people who live in them. Every day people have the opportunity to tell their story and respond to a set of standard Canberra-centric questions; each sharing their views from the diverse cultural perspectives of people within our community. Other Comments Engagement, belonging and sense of community; audiences will engage with the website to discover people from the Canberra community and in turn will respond with a sense of belonging to the community in which they live. Documenting Canberra as it was in the year 2013 ; life in Canberra in the year 2013 will serve as an a valuable portal and time capsule for future generations. Not only providing historical anecdotes about the way Canberra was but also record the hopes and dreams the people who lived here. Not only will The Canberra Project serve as an invaluable ongoing project with a real focus on the community, for the purposes of the Canberra birthday celebrations, the project will also exist and live long past the celebrations for many many years into the future. For this reason the project is just as relevant in the year 2013 as it will be in the year 3013 and so on.
Our approach to The Canberra Project contains four central elements... INCIDENTALS FROM THE STREET OF THE LOCALS – EVERY DAY PEOPLE (cross generational, cross cultural, from sub cultures, popular cultures, civil society etc) IN HOUSE PORTRAITS OF FAMILIES IN THEIR HOMES IN HOUSE MINI – DOCUMENTARY VIGNETTES OF FAMILY OR INDIVIDUAL STORIES (with a series of several prepared “Canberra centric questions about life, wisdom, aspirations, what does Canberra mean to you?)
STEADICAM FLY THROUGH OF SUBURBAN POINTS OF INTEREST (to record actuality of the life in a typical suburb in 2011 – 2013.
Locations/Suburbs The suburbs are yet to be researched or determined, however, five suburbs from Canberra’s town centres will be selected;
Civic City Inner Circle Parliamentary Circle Woden, Belconnen Tuggeranong Gungahlin Queanbeyan As well as incorporate the Capital Region (The distance measuring a one hour commute to Canberra) these regional centres include;
Goulburn Yass Cooma Braidwood Bungendore Gunning Gundaroo.
Applying THE CANBERRA PROJECT to CANBERRA100 GOALS Increase the pride and ownership of Australians in their capital.
Establish enduring international recognition of Canberra, and its role as the capital.
Canberra is perceived by many Australians as a boring and sterile place to visit and are not aware of what the region has to offer in terms of lifestyle, cleanliness and open green spaces. THE CANBERRA PROJECT will challenge these misconceptions by documenting through film and photographic imagery the people who live in the region, the vibrant and diverse cultures and the beautiful landscapes.
THE CANBERRA PROJECT will feature some buildings and institutions of national significance if they are located within featured suburbs. The people who work in these particular organizations will have an opportunity to share their mini-documentary or have their digital story featured as part of that suburb’s story.
Fully engage the community of Canberra, the Capital region, and the broader Australian community in the celebrations. THE CANBERRA PROJECT is a rich media platform, which contains short documentary vignettes, and rich photo media stories about the people and the suburbs of Canberra. To this end, THE CANBERRA PROJECT will engage the community via the website and social media in which the community can also engage with, interact and share their stories. The project THE CANBERRA PROJECT will launch via a premiere film screening, which can also stream live to web and to an audience (in the style of TROPFEST in Commonwealth Park) as part of the Centenary celebrations. The imagery will also feature as a photo exhibition, and, can also be re-purposed into a book!
Build the positive image and reputation of Canberra as a city and community. THE CANBERRA PROJECT will focus on the many positive aspects and characteristics of Canberra; the architecture, urban design, suburbs, culture, religion, street art etc. Our intention is to produce a diverse mix of portraits of people and also documenting the built and natural environment.
Build lasting legacies of community value through memorable celebrations and high quality projects. THE CANBERRA PROJECT not only provides information about the diverse region of Canberra but also documents life in Canberra in the year 2013, leaving a long lasting legacy for many generations to come
