2010
Art Students visit Hugh Lane Gallery and National History Museum in Dublin On Thursday 21st October 5th and 6th Year Art Students had an enjoyable trip to Dublin. Firstly we visited The National History Museum in Collins Barracks to view the very impressive Irish High Cross Exhibition. Here the students’ sketched and collected as much information as possible about Irish Christian Art, Metalwork, Manuscript Illumination and the High Crosses. After lunch in the city we visited the Hugh Lane Gallery where we had an unexpected view of Francis Bacon’s Studio (as he left it when he died) which was a treat for us all. Finally we visited the Sir John Laverys PASSION AND POLITICS Exhibition. A historical exhibition as it brings both sides of Lavery’s, “Island of Ireland” collection together for the first time. A rewarding and fruitful day was enjoyed by all and valuable learning for the Leaving Certificate Art History and Appreciation exam was achieved.
On yer Bike!!
On Wednesday October 20th the LCA class accompanied by their teachers Ms. O Connor, Ms. Beaumont, Ms. O Sullivan, Ms. Ingerton and JP completed their first Task Mountain biking in the Ballyhoura Mountains. Most of the students and staff completed the physically demanding 17km Mountrussell Loop with a highpoint of 405m. The Loop featured steep climbs and descents on singletracks and forest roads. It was a very tough and challenging adventure but most enjoyable. Lots of tired bodies on the bus home after a great day out. Well done to all involved.
Fifth years visit UL On Thursday October 14th fifth years went to UL for a maths lecture. We were greeted on arrival by a former pupil of St Nessan’s, Andrew Gordon who is currently doing a post graduate degree in mathematics. (Must be Ms. Dunne’s influence!) The lecture given by Rob Eastaway was on in the concert hall and there were students from many other schools around the city present. However, St. Nessan’s gave the loudest cheer when our name was called. The lecture was good fun. It was about how maths influences many situations in every day life, from the advertising of pepsi and coca cola to English auctions (increasing bids) and Dutch auctions (decreasing bids). There were fun maths games too and even a detailed analysis of an infamous penalty miss by David Beckham. We were trying to figure out should the penalty taker aim straight on or for the corner and then if the goalie did decide to dive what were the odds of saving a shot. All in all it was very enjoyable and gave us plenty to think about.
ONE QUICK SNIP
Thanks to all the staff who tackled the caption competition, but there can be only one winner, take a bow Ms. O Sullivan! And the winning line was………….. “One quick snip Keith and it’s all over” Thanks to our judge Michael, and to Eugene for sponsoring the prize.
