architectural trip

0 1introduction:

architectural trip

to mexico

Eduardo Aquino, along with his students, went to Mexico City for an educational trip. The benefit of the trip was to open up students’ design perceptions. Seeing more than just buildings and tourist attractions, the studio group experienced Mexico City’s vibrant and authentic culture. Observing these qualities, the studio was able to be motivated in preparation to its final project -an architecture that proposes complete benefit to an urban community.

0 1introduction:

architectural trip

to mexico

This project was inspired by the nostalgia the street’s culture brought. Mexico and the Philippines have a significant amount of similarities, which granted an almost fabricated experience of nostalgia -an ambiguity of being home, but not naturally.

Dr. Aquino asked the studio to independently create a proposal for an urban project in either Mexico, or Winnipeg. Photos from September 2016 aided as inspiration to accomplish this. They were able to expose and showcase the fact that Winnipeg, Mexico and the Philippines have potential united (albeit different from each other) design and life.

And now it starts. Apparent, yet disjointed. History, yet so vivid. Not home, but here.

More examinations of these photos created more overwhelming power of nostalgia that did not disappear until addressed as the project’s research thesis.

Through the research, the project inspired a trigger of memories from childhood and the Philippines. It is not impossible to compare the Philippines and Winnipeg despite their significant difference.

I have always been fascinated with reading back on my old memories through the old journal entries I have created ever since I was 14 years old. I keep coming back to this path through the project. So, as suggested by Dr. Aquino, I created a book called All That I Remember that compiles an outline of all the nostalgic experiences I had, involving architecture of the Philippines and Canada.

0 3 avenida

de los insurgentes

The studio discussed the idea of addressing the site as the wellspring of a structure. Therefore, using Julie Mehretu’s works as precedents, the studio created a schematic drawing of the site. Dr. Aquino described this as an “intuitive precision” of context drawing.

0 3 avenida

de los insurgentes

Dr. Eduardo Aquino, along with the studio had a day-long walk through Avenida de los Insurgentes. This avenue stretches on a 28 km distance and is the longest one in Mexico City. The city is mostly known for its very colourful physicality, but Avenida de los Insurgentes creates a whole different scheme of visuality due to its ruggedness. Although the avenue is comprised of commercial buildings, it has a significant number of abandoned buildings. Eventually, I found a building that I called “Abandonado” (abandoned).

“Abandonado”/ Edificio de nostalgia’s emptiness on the inside is a total opposite on its exterior. Although the building is abandoned, street vendors treated this buidling as a centre for food sheds. It can be said that this building is not alone after all. This potentiality of life and design created an inspiration for architecture.

edificio de nostalgia

(building of nostalgia)

The idea of nostalgia in the building was challenging because of the underlying question: “How will you show literal nostalgia in an architecturized building?. To address this question, showing the old facade of the building is essential for it to preserve its past and have it co-exist with its present form.

This chapter contains a personal touch of what I have learned through the project, especially in its conclusion. One of the challenges of this project was to create less obstruction of technicality and the avoidance of steering away from the schematic and poetic ideas.

This chapter contains a personal reflection and response to the final review on April 26, 2017. It comprises of revisions and selfcritique. One of the challenges of this project was to create less obstruction of technicality and the avoidance of steering away from the schematic and poetic ideas, which I experienced. A deeper investigation of some chosen floors can also be found in this chapter.

FIRST FLOOR_CARINDERIA (Eatery)

The ground floor eatery looks into bringing in the culture of a market place and having people experience the same. There is an ambiguity being being in a market place but also not necessarily. Although this will not create the same nostalgic feeling with some people, it still creates this ambiguity that inspires their own memories.

SECOND AND THIRD FLOOR_DOLL HOUSE HOTEL

As people grow older, they lose track of their childhood. Having to connect through this by living in a dollhouse-like residence is oriented to a probable recreation those moments. This hotel looks into serving people their desire to live in a childish residence, and at the same time, connecting to the city with its open area. Like aforementioned, this creates another state of ambiguity. The juxtaposition of the city’s ruggedness and the interior’s childhood, and whimsical experience is clearly seen.

EIGHTH FLOOR_BAKERY/SAUNA

Whether it be someone’s Grandma’s baking or any other memory, the smell of bread surely creates nostalgic senses to most people. It was addressed that a literal use of bread is not necessary to create this experience.
