RECONNECTION ANNUAL REPORT | 2022

LETTER FROM DIRECTOR Over the past two years, we have all felt the effects of confinement and isolation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. As we have emerged and reunited with friends, family, and business associates, there is a new feeling of energy, invigoration, and hopefulness. In short, 2022 has been the year of powerful reconnection. Throughout the pages of this year’s annual report, we are eager to share how Irvine has served as a trusted destination for the community to reconnect. Through our nature programs, environmental education, camps, and special events, many have found ways to activate their connection with nature. Just as connecting with friends, family, and colleagues has brought us great pleasure, connecting with nature has and always will provide great relief. For 47 years, Irvine has been a community resource for nature exploration and learning. We are proud to provide access to outdoor discovery and to teach about the environment and its many threats. Of course, we have you, our generous donors, to thank for staying connected with us through good times and challenging ones, and for believing in our work and supporting our mission. This annual report is dedicated to you, our Irvine family of supporters, as we proudly showcase how Irvine is a place for reconnection with nature and with each other.

EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAMS

“We must teach our children to smell the earth, to taste the rain, to touch the wind, to see things grow, to see the sun rise and night fall — to care.” John Cleal

THE NATURE PRESCHOOL

Our Nature Preschool enjoyed a rich year of handson nature and play learning. Transitioning to a nearly 100% outdoor learning model, Irvine’s dedicated teachers assembled lesson plans, braved the elements in all types of weather, wiped noses, helped kids with gear, handled animals, and above all shared their love of nature with an amazing group of young learners. In its 12th year, The Nature Preschool was fully enrolled, with 4 classes of 3-5 year olds. The small class size is paramount to building connection — especially for many of these

Earth Friends Homeschool Program With more families choosing to homeschool their children, Irvine’s Earth Friends Outdoors Homeschool Program had a record-shattering year with its highest enrollment ever of 257 students. Through Earth Friends, children ages 4-14 participated in all-outdoor classes designed to teach them about the natural world through immersive, messy learning experiences. Little Birds Our littlest learners and their caregivers filled weekly classes and enjoyed discovering the wonders of nature along our trails. Our deck served as their outdoor nature-filled gathering space and classroom. For these “COVID-babies,” Irvine provided a safe place to make firsttime connections with others.

SCHOOL AGE PROGRAMS

“Nature is one of our greatest teachers.” Anonymous

STUDENTS AND IRVINE: A NATURAL CONNECTION With programs in-school, after-school, and field trips to Irvine, more students than ever were able to learn and explore their natural surroundings, with inspirational experiences to complement school curriculum and deepen their connection to nature. Field Trips After two long years without them, field trip activity burst wide open in the spring of 2022. We quadrupled the number of field trips in the spring compared to that of the entire 2020-2021 school year. More than half of the 42 field trips conducted were grant funded, including four for young children from the St. Vincent de Paul Head Start Programs from the Pimlico neighborhood of Baltimore City. Nature in the Classroom Our educators conducted a mixture of in-person and virtual Nature in the Classroom (NICs) programs this year. Highlights included our work at New Song Academy every other week for 56 students and with Roland Park Country School for weekly FERN (Focused Environmental Research in Nature) classes with 37 students.

IRVINE NATURE CENTER ANNUAL REPORT 2022

“The Irvine Nature Center has been a great partner with the Saint Ignatius Loyola Academy community. It allows us the ability to extend our classroom learning beyond the school building. We love taking our students to explore nature, acquire new survival skills, and learn about local animals. We look forward to continuing this fruitful partnership into the future.” Mike Conroy, Dean of School Life, Saint Ignatius Loyola Academy

Eco-Explorers After-School Nature Club

“The Kahlert Foundation

Irvine educators partnered with 13 schools during the 2021-2022 school year to provide weekly environmental learning after school for 480 elementary school students. We’ve added our first middle school, Cross Country Middle in Baltimore City. Now in its 8th year, EcoExplorers continues to grow, especially in Title 1 schools where after-school programming and access to nature are limited. This growth is a result of generous grant funders.

enjoys supporting Irvine Nature Center as they provide a wonderful place to educate children about the environment and the beauty of the outdoors.” Ellen Finnerty Myers, Executive Director of The Kahlert Foundation

Campouts Irvine held its first overnight grant-funded campout in two years in late April. Young boys and girls from the Holistic Life Foundation were able to enjoy a first-time experience of sleeping outside under the stars, cooking s’mores over a campfire, and listening to the cries of coyotes in the distance.

SUMMER NATURE CAMP

“Encourage your child to have muddy, grassy or sandy feet by the end of each day, that’s the childhood they deserve.” Penny Whitehouse

Every child deserves a carefree summer in nature. With help from The Devito Family Trust and The Dillon Fund, Irvine was able to provide scholarships for 30 families, several from our neighboring partner schools, Reisterstown and Glyndon Elementary. Overall 563 campers experienced the joy of nature at Irvine.

ANIMAL CARE An instrumental part of Irvine’s mission is to teach through example, and Irvine’s 50 animal ambassadors make for the best teachers. This year we welcomed Mallory Mlynarek and Paige Vance to our Animal Care team to provide our 50 animal residents with top-notch attention and care.

“Thank you for providing us with the critical funds required to care for our animals, property, and to educate the maximum number of people.” Mallory Mlynarek, Animal Care Manager

AFTER HOURS AT IRVINE This year, we introduced a new and special benefit just for our Irvine members — a chance to have exclusive access to Irvine after the property closes to the public. On the first Thursday of the month, members are invited to explore the trails, pack a dinner, and enjoy special time in nature.

“Relatively few opportunities exist for us to escape the daily hustle and bustle of two working parents and three busy kids, but After Hours at Irvine has been the most meaningful of these rare opportunities. Walking with my son on uncrowded trails at dusk is not only a chance for both of us to connect and re-charge, but it also sparks his inner-philosopher to come out and muse about life and the world. We conclude these magical walks with delicious s’mores and then return to the ‘real world’. Many thanks to the Irvine team for making these truly memorable evenings possible.” Justin Label, Irvine Member

ADULT PROGRAMS

“Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.” Albert Einstein

Reconnecting through Nature Irvine again facilitated learning and gathering through its signature programs: Eat, Drink & Learn, Lunch and Learns, and multiple adult nature programs. Among the popular classes were Backyard Birding, Foraging, and Gardening with Native Plants. Did you know that Irvine is one of the best birding spots in the area? There are over 190 species of birds on Irvine’s property. Health and Wellness When we consider the stress and isolation that many have experienced in recent years, we are proud that Irvine has served as a vital resource for people to seek solace and stress relief by providing access to nature-informed health and wellness programming. Irvine formally launched its program Health and Wellness through Nature, and offered outdoor activities such as: meditation, herbalism, Tai Chi, and yoga, all designed to leverage nature’s healing powers. Experienced Tai Chi leader Mary Pinkard conducted classes to help adults deepen their connections with nature through meditative motions of body, mind, and spirit. In the spring of 2022, we hosted 51 nature-based health and wellness public programs, many of which sold out.

Reconnecting with the Earth Visitors often remark that Irvine is a hidden gem. During these continued uncertain times, Irvine’s property serves as a place of refuge for many — providing not only connection, but also comfort, exploration, exercise, and hope. With the imminent threat of climate change, we see the value of connecting with nature and learning to be better stewards of our planet. Under the leadership of Natural Resources Manager, Kyle Gillen, and Public Programs Manager, Dr. Clare Walker, we made many improvements on Irvine’s property this year. • New and improved interactive features at our Native American Site and Three Sisters Garden • The creation of a Therapeutic Herb Garden at Wedding Point • The removal of numerous invasive plants all over our 211 acre property The day-to-day care of Irvine’s 211 acres would be impossible without volunteers and summer trail crew. Thanks to the Arbor Dog Foundation, Irvine was able to hire a full-time intern to assist with many tasks during the busiest growing seasons. During his time with Irvine, intern Lamonte Brown learned the basics of landscaping and land maintenance and was recently offered employment by a national environmental and horticultural services company.

“I am very fortunate to work on Irvine’s beautiful property in all seasons. With the invaluable volunteers and interns, I strive to collect seeds from many native plants on our property so we can grow our own locally-sourced native plants. It’s efforts like these that help to protect our natural environment for future generations.” Dr. Clare Walker, Public Programs Manager

Project Clean Stream On Earth Day 2022, Irvine hosted Project Clean Stream — the annual watershed-wide cleanup initiative that was started by Irvine in 1977. More than 100 staff and volunteers picked up over 1,500 pounds of trash along Garrison Forest Road, Crondall Lane, and Gwynnbrook Avenue. Corporate volunteers from M&T Bank, Constellation, and the Baltimore Ravens made a large impact while deepening connections with their colleagues. Throughout the year, volunteers from area corporations such as CareFirst, T.Rowe Price, and SC&H rolled up their sleeves and helped with projects on our property. We are grateful to them for contributing their time, talent, and donating over 1,800 hours to help maintain our campus.

12 IRVINE NATURE CENTER ANNUAL REPORT 2022

“On April 22nd, our team joined forces with Irvine and participated in the annual Project Clean Stream initiative. We had 18 staff members who eagerly got their hands dirty in celebration of Earth Day. Everyone felt extremely fortunate to contribute and had a wonderful time helping clean up and beautify our surrounding community. Learning that we had picked up over 1,500 pounds of garbage was astonishing, and our staff was so excited to help further the overall mission of Irvine Nature Center and Project Clean Stream.” Drew Meyer, Community Relations Coordinator, Baltimore Ravens

SPECIAL EVENTS

Irvine welcomed the community with a wide range of events including our signature annual fundraiser, Pumpkins on the Green, as well as popular weekend family programs including Native Plant Sale and Maple Magic.

Pumpkins on the Green Over 50 Corporate Sponsors and VIP underwriters gathered with their guests under the big tent at Irvine to make Irvine’s festive fall fundraiser, Pumpkins on the Green 2021, a big success. We are grateful for their generosity and for the leadership of our chairs, Embry and Harris Peace, and an enthusiastic host committee. Maple Magic

Participants came from near and far for 4 sell-out events in February, with a combined attendance of 123. Did you know it takes 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of maple syrup? Native Plant Sale In early May, the Guilford Garden Club partnered with Irvine to host a Native Plant Sale under the tent at Irvine. Hundreds flocked from around the region to our campus to shop from a wide variety of native plants and attend 11 different native plant workshops throughout the day.

“We support Irvine because we believe in its mission to help others engage with nature. When they were younger, our children attended Irvine's camps, where they explored and learned about nature. This fostered an appreciation for environmental stewardship and a love of family walks in the woods. While our kids are older now, Kristin continues to use Irvine as a trusted resource in her nature unit while teaching kindergarten students. In our 47 years, we have discovered that when people make a direct connection to the environment through hands-on discovery, outdoor interactions, and nature exploration, they are inspired to be kinder, better citizens of the planet. This is what we strive for — to inspire people to explore, respect and protect nature.
