SITE CONTEXT

CITY CONTEXT Kansas City hosts several businesses, entertainment venues, restaurants and festivals throughout the year. The Power and Light District, the Kauman Center of Performing Arts, Municipal Auditorium and several other venues host various events throughout the year to bring people to the downtown area. With a mix of businesses and entertainment venues, people will enjoy the city both during the day and at night. SITE CONTEXT Barney Allis Plaza is located in the heart of downtown, and draws crowds from the Convention Center, Municipal Auditorium, nearby hotels, and the Power and Light District, among other places. The site is currently underutilized due to accessibility issues and the uninviting appearance. People have to walk up two large ights of stairs to see the plaza, deterring people from visiting the site The parking garage below the plaza level has spaces allotted for the Marriott and public parking. The structure of the garage is failing on some levels, causing areas to be closed in the garage. Although the plaza is open, there are not many trees that provide shade or create an inviting appearance to those passing by. As one of the very few green areas in the downtown area, it is important to preserve the space while also designing a more inviting space. Barney Allis Plaza has the potential to become a new and popular gathering space.

ACCESS TO SITE Surrounded by several major interstates, Barney Allis Plaza is accessible from all directions, whether one is approaching the site from Interstate 70, Interstate 35, or Interstate 670. The site is ideally located next to the major highways, allowing for quick and direct access to the site. There are also several public transportation options that stop at the site. There is currently a bus stop on the northeast corner of the site where most of the major buses stop periodically during the day. The downtown streetcar stops two blocks east of the site, allowing people to quickly hop on to travel to other stops along the route. More active ways to get around the city include the shared bike and scooter services. HIGHWAY ROUTES STREET ROUTES

SITE ANALYSIS

Other than Power and Light, there are only a few food options located near the plaza. People attending a convention have to walk at least two blocks to get food. Although there are several office buildings near the site, there are no daycare centers nearby. The ones that are nearby are for people working for the company. There are three charter schools located a few blocks to the north, but the children who attend those schools don’t have an outdoor play space.

Kansas City as a whole also lacks access to grocery stores or markets. There is the River Market located to the north and Cosentino’s located a few blocks east, but there are no convenience stores nearby for quick or emergency shopping.

CROSSROADS

With more development happening in the city, public green spaces are diminishing. Barney Allis Plaza is one of the few public plazas left in the city that has open green space. DISTRICTS

PRECEDENT RESEARCH

KLYDE WARREN PARK - DALLAS, TX

10

The design and layout of Kylde Warren Park shows how private spaces are integrated into the main public space to create various experiences for people visiting. Other strong concepts integrated into the design include: - large, open green space for varying activities and events - unique playground design using elements of nature to separate play spaces - integrating water feature into the play area - shaded areas located around the open green areas - use of nature and landscape to separate spaces instead of physical barriers

BARNEY ALLIS PLAZA

YAGAN SQUARE - AUSTRALIA The design of Yagan Square showcases the idea of convergence and bringing dierent people together. This idea can be seen in the layout of the plaza space as a whole, as well as through a water element that runs through the site. Some other strong concepts in the design include: - bridge connecting the separate buildings provides quick access from one to the other while also providing shade to the space below - interactive water feature runs through the playground and along the site to connect the whole site together - nice combination of shaded areas and areas exposed to the sun - organic forms in the playground instead of typical equipment placed on the site

DISCOVERY GREEN - HOUSTON, TX The layout of Discovery Green allows for separate events to happen simultaneously on the site. Both public and private areas are created by the landscape. Some of the strong concepts in the design include: - stage area to host live performances - several large, open green spaces to accommodate various events - areas separated from the main space to provide private spaces - balance of shaded and non-shaded areas - integration of water into the edge of the site

MATERIAL / FORM INSPIRATION

TABIAT PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE - IRAN

These images show how the choice of materials and form affect the experience of the space. It is important to choose materials that flow with the design of the space. All three examples incorporate: - areas for people to stop and observe the surrounding context - plant selection to ensure the plants are enjoyable instead of being in the way - use of material to protect or direct sunlight in the space - use of plants and nature to enhance the space

PROGRAM LAYOUT

EARLY PROGRAM CONCEPTS Program elements that I chose to incorporate into the design include a restaurant, small grocery store, daycare, a community center, and a stage area for various performances. I also wanted to incorporate large, open green spaces to accommodate various events throughout the year.

Common elements in the models include a terraced stair on the southeast corner leading up from a stage, playground and water feature located near each other for easy access for children, and buildings located on the edges to create more open space in the center of the plaza.

SELECTED CONCEPT TO DEVELOP

BARNEY ALLIS PLAZA

CONCEPT SKETCHES

The layout and organization of the plaza space is based on the tiered seating and stairs located on the southeast corner. The buildings are located in the northeast and southwest corners to draw people into the plaza space from all four corners of the site. A bridge spans over the main plaza level, adding more usable spaces on the site. The bridge would provide access from the top of the restaurant to the community center, which also creates another open space to host events. The organic forms of the stairs and bridge are meant to guide people through the space and represent the idea of people flowing through the various spaces on the site.
