ARTIST LIVE / WORK HOUSING IN THE IVANHOE NEIGHBORHOOD KANSAS CITY, MO
Dramatically impacted by the construction of Highway 71, the Ivanhoe Neighborhood has worked to rebuild the neighborhood to restore the pride that once belonged in the community. Following the principles from Mindy Fullilove’s book, Urban Alchemy, it is important for the neighborhood to unpuzzle the fractured spaces, unslum the neighborhood, and create meaningful places to strengthen the neighborhood and restore pride among residents. The design of the Artist Live/Work
Housing creates collaborative spaces where artists and community members can gather to celebrate art and get to know others in the neighborhood. The important connection between nature, art and residents will bridge the gap between the past and the future. The live/work housing will also strengthen the connection between the neighborhood and downtown Kansas City by inviting others to participate in art events and shows hosted by the neighborhood. 96 0

ENVISIONING THE NEW BARNEY ALLIS PLAZA REDEVELOPMENT KANSAS CITY, MO
Located in the heart of downtown Kansas City, Barney Allis Plaza is the ideal location for various events to take place throughout the year. Currently, the site is primarily used for its underground parking garage, but the structure is failing. The plaza space is underutilized and remains vacant most of the year. Redeveloping the plaza space makes the space more inviting and a draw for tourists visiting downtown. The program elements that are lacking in the community include a small grocery store, daycare, community center, quick food options, and an outdoor performance space. Introducing these program elements will allow the plaza to be usable during all seasons, thus preventing the space from sitting vacant. Incorporating multiple large, open gathering spaces, several events of various sizes can take place, accommodating diverse groups from the community.

RE-PURPOSING SHIPPING CONTAINERS TALLGRASS PRAIRIE PRESERVE - ELMDALE, KS
Due to the large amount of shipping containers that sit unused, this project aims to reuse the containers to create an observation tower at the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in Elmdale, KS. The site contains a vast landscape of prairie fields, rolling hills, and small ponds. Using the standard 10’, 20’, and 40’ containers posed a unique challenge when designing the tower to create a unique experience for visitors. Some of the containers were manipulated to increase the connection with nature along the various points of the journey in the tower.

PARIS RIVERSIDE RESTAURANT DINING ALONG THE RIVER SEINE PARIS, FRANCE
Located near the Eiffel Tower and along the banks of the River Seine, the restaurant provides several dining options to accommodate local patrons and tourists. The restaurant design brings the river to life through the flowing exterior design mimicking the river waves extending from the landscape to the restaurant. The connection creates tunnels that lead visitors from the pedestrian road above to the edge of the River Seine.
Since there are several tourists that visit the area, the restaurant offers several dining options to allow people to visit any time throughout the day, including a bakery for morning treats, a causal dining area with a bar for the afternoon and evening, and a formal dining area for dinner. The large windows on the sides of the dining spaces provide abundant opportunities to enjoy the beautiful views surrounding the restaurant.

DINING EXPERIENCE Each “wave” hosts a different function in the restaurant. The bakery is located in the first “wave” so that it can be open for breakfast without having to open the rest of the restaurant. The kitchen and bathrooms take up the second “wave” followed by the formal dining area in the third “wave”. The casual dining area and bar are located in the fourth “wave” closest to the river. There is also outdoor dining available for those who wish to enjoy the outdoor views of the River Seine and the Eiffel Tower. At the point where each “wave” meets the ground, there are small pools of water to mimic the flow of waves, while also acting as a barrier to prevent people from accessing the roof.

WEAVER COURTYARD RENOVATION DESIGN-BUILD PROJECT LAWRENCE, KS
“The Commons” at Spooner Hall works to bring together the arts, sciences, and humanities to foster a collaborative dialogue between disciplines within the University of Kansas community. The Weaver Courtyard Renovation Project aimed to strengthen the mission of “The Commons” through a design organized around the five elements: Earth, Air, Water, Fire, and Spirit.
The studio of 18 students collaborated to create designs for a new entrance, stone sculptures, a storm water collection system, and updated landscaping to create an inviting space for the campus community to interact with various elements seen in nature. I worked on the storm water system to redirect water runoff from the building to other areas in the courtyard.

CHANNEL TO BIOSWALE FILLED WITH RECYCLED LANDSCAPE GLASS; SEE A505
The Storm Water Management System aims to educate the campus community about alternative ways to use storm water in an ecologically friendly way. The design redirects the water runoff from the roof to the sculpture, through a channel filled with recycled glass, into the bioswale, and overflows into the fountain basin to drain, only in excessive rainfalls. The sculpture breaks into three pathways to represent the three historically major floods in Kansas. The use of copper and rock represent the human impact on the flow of water. The redirection of the water resembles the form of rivers and landscapes in Kansas.

WEAVER COURTYARD RENOVATION
The Storm Water Management System activates the exterior facade of Spooner Hall adjacent the Courtyard by redirecting water away from the building. The path of the water becomes visible to celebrate the flow of water while also educating the campus community. The man-made copper sculpture on top of the organic rock resembles the human impact on water in the natural environment. The whole system shows alternate ways to use the water in the Courtyard while also promoting sustainability on campus.

URBAN SKETCHING IN EUROPE ANALYZING ARCHITECTURE THROUGH SKETCHING ITALY, FRANCE, SPAIN
While traveling through Italy, France, and Spain, sketching while sight-seeing became an important component to understanding the complexity of the architecture and layout of urban spaces. Sketching was an important way to aid in understanding the culture of each city and recognizing the connection between small spaces and the whole city. The sketches also helped me study and interpret urban spaces in a way that I have never thought about before.
