Tephra Holistic Da y Spa specializes in t he treatment of Multiple Sclerosis. Inspired by t he er up tion of t he Eldf ell volcano in 1973 and t he resulting destr uction of t he local t own, t he concep t of Tephra is extrapolat ed from t he human exper ience of a plagued phy sical condition. The exper ience is distilled int o t hree st ages: action, healing, and rebir t h. The end result is emerg ence. Just as t he t own battled, emerged, and grew out of t he ash, t he patient will do t he same in t heir f ight wit h Multiple Sclerosis.

U pon ent er ing, one is immersed in a dar k , moody atmosphere wit h a strat egic use of light prom p ting t hem t o advance t hrough t he space a nd st ar t t he process o f treatment.

Pool | Healing

In t he midst of treatment, t he patients reac h t he pool where t hey are me t wit h opposing f or ms; one being organic, volcanic roc k , ano t her being cr isp, unt ouc hed pl ywood, and t he last being int angible, natural light. S t ac ked roc ks anc hor t he pool while pl ywood projects from t hem, breaking int er mitt entl y t o allow sunlight t o f lood int o t he space.

Resid ence | Bedroom A pr ivat e re treat f or t he residents is designed t o rejuvenat e and of f er a pla ce f ind solitude and escape stresses of t he outside wor ld.

The wor kplace is def ined wit h a more str uctural, per manent core inspired by t he hist or ic old city built along t he t horoughf are t hat r uns be tween t he two spaces, and a looser, more f lexible per ipher y spaces, adap t able t o t he c hanging needs of t he of f ice. Per ipheral spaces are loosel y def ined and are f lexible, relating bac k t o t he mapped out, but still developing additions in Tha yer ’s map.

Just as market vendors open their stalls, shops and tents for business in the morning and then “close up shop� in the evening, The Exchange highlights the day-to-night, work-to-play transition by providing a flexible space that can be used for work as well a s f o r e v e n t s . Ta k i n g i n s p i r a t i o n f r o m s t a l l s t u c t u r e s seen in public markets, an automatic structure of perforated panels supported by a metal frame extends throughout the space.

Rather than the c a t c h o f t h e d a y o r f r e s h l y b a k e d b r e a d , u p f o r g r a b s a r e t h e d a i l y p a p e r, current periodicals and promotional materials. The bronze framing marries the welcome area with the “market square� with its continuation into the space. The lounge area in the above left promotes collaboration between p e o p l e i n a n d o u t s i d e o f t h e o f f i c e w i t h H a w o r t h ’s B l u e s c a p e t e c h w a l l .

In the following decades, many more motel s and hotels pop up and mimic the flashy, colorful style . These structures still radiate optimism even with an eerie look from half a century of weatheri ng.
