RESIDENTIAL DESIGN - SAMPLE
FLUX Sited in the growing Gowanus Canal neighborhood in Brooklyn, this proposal for a residential tower and community library stands as a beacon and marker for the surrounding neighborhood. The project pushes the boundaries of small scale living units in combination with shared residential public spaces to make up a diverse, rich, housing typology in the context of the Gowanus neighborhood. As a team effort for the comprehensive studio, I worked with my partners to design the tower layout, the overall program and site relationship, the final model, and many drawings for communication of the project. 01. DRAWING - SAMPLE Architecturally speaking, the axonometric drawing is a language all its own in our field. The drawing samples here explored the critical explanation of a microhousing unit I designed in comprehensive studio. The unit is only 250 sqft, but has a living room, bedroom, office, bathroom, and full walk-in closet. Without the exploded axonometric drawing of how the designed, built-in, adjustable room walls create the individual spaces in this very small footprint, the project would have lost a crucial strength.

VENICE BIENNALE 2016 Project Exhibited at the 2016 US Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale “Detroit doesn’t have a material problem; its material has an image problem. Recognizing architecture’s capacity to work on and produce both materials and images, our project aims to reverse current perceptions of Detroit. Where others see an excess of ruins, we see an abundant resource for building materials.” -T+E+A+M

The materials matter. this project explores the fluidity of concrete in architecture
THESIS PROJECT
02 An architectural boundary system developed over a years time by Kristen Gandy and Steven Scharrer. The project drawings, molds, and concrete 1:1 casts were all produced by the duo. Molds were flexible and each unit relates to the previous cast below and beside it. The final product was a self-structuring compressive boundary made up of 56 unit units.

03 PUSHPOKEPUNCH PushPokePunch leverages the properties of concrete’s fluid nature in order to produce a negotiable boundary condition. Historically, architecture has addressed the spatial marker, or boundary, as more of a barrier. A barrier makes work of actively impeding spatial negotiation, and inhibits relationships across spatial territories. A boundary, however, has variable definitions of space. A boundary can be as thin as line on a map, as abstract as an idea, or as thick as a buttressed gate surrounding a castle. These variable definitions are seldom made manifest in a physical state.
