I news and events 5th IFLA Africa symposium Convinced on the one hand that the recognition of the landscape architecture profession is based on a solid educational programme at the tertiary level through a programme that stands up to international scrutiny, and on the other hand, that the landscape architecture profession is misunderstood or even unknown in Morocco and many other African countries, AAPM invites you to submit an Abstract of a paper to be presented at the 5th IFLA Africa Symposium with the theme: LEARNING THE LANDSCAPE LANDSCAPES OF LEARNING This symposium examines how we learn the landscape on the one hand, and what the landscape can teach us on the other. The first part of the theme will look at what constitutes an appropriate course structure relevant to our times and to the African continent, using examples from other countries both in Africa and elsewhere. The second part of the programme will expose landscapes that teach us the history of a place, the cultural customs, or those which enrich our understanding of ecological processes and environment. Illustrations will be taken from all over the continent and the Mediterranean basin, but also through local projects. Rich with a long history of gardens spanning several centuries, Morocco is a beautiful country from which to explore these themes. From ancient and ingenious irrigation systems and earth construction to the rich culture of Moorish design, a number of local sites illustrate clearly that much of Moroccan landscape architecture is rooted in environmentally responsible and sustainable design. In spite of Morocco’s long history of garden design, it is also searching for recognition of the profession of Landscape Architecture, and it suffers from the absence of adequate tertiary educational programmes adapted to local particularities. Situated at the northern tip of the continent, Morocco is at the gateway between Africa and Europe; as such, AAPM hopes to welcome participants not only from Africa, but also from the Mediterranean basin and Europe in general. In addition to Rabat’s International Airport, the Mohamed V International airport in Casablanca has become a hub for flights to and from many African countries, Europe, the Middle East and America making the venue an accessible choice. Rabat is situated in the centre of the country convenient for travelling to explore either the north or the south of the country.

RaIn BIRd: Innovative, waterefficient Irrigation technology As the world’s water supply continues to be challenged by population growth, drought and contamination, there’s little doubt that the future of the irrigation industry rests upon a very important goal. As a leading irrigation system manufacturer, Rain Bird is dedicated to achieving this goal each and every day. Rain Bird has built its reputation on delivering irrigation systems that combine performance with efficiency. Every new product or service the company develops is assessed for its contribution to its overarching philosophy, The Intelligent Use of Water™. At one of the largest indoor irrigation testing facilities in the world, Rain Bird continually tests new and current products for quality and accuracy. From water-efficient nozzles and spray heads to cutting-edge drip technology and state-of-the-art control solutions, here are just a few of the many Rain Bird products designed to use less water while maintaining beautiful landscapes. XFs subsurface dripline with Copper shield™ technology Available in a wide variety of emitter flow rates, emitter spacing and coil lengths, XFS Subsurface Dripline offers up to 90 percent watering efficiency for turf grass, shrubs and groundcover. Because the dripline is buried, it is unaffected by wind, evaporation or vandalism, effectively watering plants and turf while using 30 to 70 percent less water than overhead sprays. One particular feature that sets the XFS Subsurface Dripline far apart from other subsurface dripline products is Rain Bird’s patent-pending Copper Shield™ Technology. This unique technology protects dripline emitters from root intrusion without the use of chemical treated filters. XFS Subsurface Dripline also features a proprietary emitter design that resists clogging by combining an extra-wide flow path with a self-flushing action. This low-profile, pressurecompensating emitter design also reduces in-line pressure loss, allowing longer lateral runs, simplifying design and reducing installation time and costs. In addition to more common drip applications such as the areas between curbs and sidewalk, this dripline can also be used to irrigate sports fields, making it possible for athletes to use the fields even while irrigation is taking place. Pressure-regulating sprays and Rotors High water pressure is a common problem in many communities. As pressure increases, so does an irrigation system’s flow rate. The resulting symptoms include wasted water, higher water bills and damaged system components. But this big problem has a simple solution — Rain Bird PRS rotors and sprays. Rain Bird® 1800® Series Sprays and 5000 Series Rotors featuring PRS with Flow Optimizer™ technology are ideal for use in areas with high or widely fluctuating water pressures. The patented PRS pressure regulator built into the stem can help save approximately one gallon per minute per spray. It also helps to end misting and fogging that allows water to float away on the wind rather than landing on its intended target—the turf. Given the high price of water in many areas, customers can also enjoy considerable cost savings—annually and over the life of the system. A typical residential site using Rain Bird PRS 5000 Rotors and 1800 Series Sprays can save up to 401,250 liters per year. esP-LX series Controllers Rain Bird’s ESP-LX Series Controllers—the traditionally-wired ESP-LXME and
14
ESP-LXMEF Controllers and the two-wire decoder-based ESP-LXD Controller— combine modularity with advanced water management and Rain Bird’s Extra Simple Programming. A traditionally-wired controller, the ESP-LXME is a better fit for small to large commercial sites that are unlikely to experience future expansion and need fast, easy installation with low controller hardware costs. The ESP-LXMEF offers all the same features as the ESP-LXME, but also features a standard Flow-Smart module for flow learning, logging and problem reaction. The ESP-LXD two-wire decoder-based controller is the right choice for larger commercial sites, projects being developed in multiple phases over time and sites that require fast and efficient troubleshooting. All three controllers come packed with standard features like Rain Bird’s Cycle+Soak™ and Contractor Default Program™, plus the option to include advanced features like Rain Bird’s ETC Manager™ Cartridge for smart, weatherbased control and the IQ v3.0 Central Control Communication Cartridge for affordable, integrated central control. IQ-Cloud v. 3.0 Central Control Platform Rain Bird’s IQ-Cloud v. 3.0 Central Control Platform offers three solutions that give you greater control over the irrigation systems you manage, whether you’re in charge of one large site or multiple sites. IQ-Cloud allows multiple users to access IQ from any web-enabled device and enables multi-user access. It’s perfect for managing HOAs, schools, parks and municipal properties. Ideal for managing hospitals, universities, and government or military properties, IQ-Enterprise allows organizations to deploy IQ-Cloud on their servers to comply with IT security practices. Finally, single users managing multiple properties can use IQ-Desktop to control irrigation systems and save water from their personal computers. He-van High-efficiency variable arc nozzles Rain Bird’s HE-VAN High Efficiency Variable Arc Nozzle comes in 8’, 10’, 12’ and 15’ models (2.4 –4.5m), each adjustable from 0 to 360 degrees, making it possible to irrigate landscapes of all shapes and sizes with just four nozzles. HEVAN’s thicker water streams and larger droplets help it maintain a high level of efficiency even in windy conditions. HE-VAN also provides a level of distribution uniformity (DU) that few spray nozzles—fixed or variable arc—can match. They also come with Patent Pending Flow Control Technology and Rain Bird’s ExactEdge™ adjustment feature. sMRt-Y soil Moisture sensor Rain Bird’s SMRT-Y Soil Moisture Sensor features a digital in-ground sensor and a special controller interface that virtually tell the irrigation system when the landscape needs water. These components provide contractors with an economical, easy-to-install irrigation system add-on that can deliver significant water savings of 40% or more. Rws Root watering system Rain Bird’s RWS Root Watering System is designed to deliver water, oxygen and nutrients to newly planted trees and their surrounding soil, encouraging deeper root growth and reducing transplant shock. The RWS features patented basket weave canisters installed at grade, enabling below-ground irrigation and reducing water lost to evaporation and run-off. The 46cm and 91cm models feature a top assembly with integrated clips for tool-free grate installation. A recessed stem allows for the use of Rain Bird’s EMT-6XERI six-outlet drip manifold device, making it possible to irrigate the host RWS unit, other RWS units or even provide surface irrigation to other trees or plants nearby for better design flexibility. wR2 Rain/Freeze sensor Rain Bird’s WR2 Rain/Freeze Sensor prevents irrigation systems from operating in rainy or cold conditions, saving water and improving system performance. The controller interface displays all settings on an easy-to-read LCD screen, making it possible to see signal strength, rain and temperature set points, battery life and more at a glance. In addition to these groundbreaking products, Rain Bird continues to produce many other water-efficient system components that can make a tremendous impact on the amount of water used for irrigation. And, for sites using reclaimed water, Rain Bird offers a host of special reclaimed water solutions featuring irrigation system components designed to easily handle chemicals, grit and other challenges. I healtcare archItecture entrance leads directly into a drop-off loop with canopy protection at the main entrance. Visitors to the hospital have easy access to surface parking immediately adjacent to the drop-off loop to both the east and west sides, with a valet option at the main entrance. The south side provides access for staff, service vehicles and ambulances. The project will be a phased construction, with phase one comprising a 23,000 sqm floor area, which is organised over eight floors and will accommodate three levels of treatment and diagnostics and four floors of inpatient beds. Phase one will also accommodate 325 car parking spaces for staff and visitors. Phase two will be a horizontal expansion of approximately 16,000 sqm to all levels of the project and a five level parking structure to accommodate approximately 410 cars. This expansion is designed to be seamlessly integrated into phase one of construction as a single architectural expression. The main building entrance is a public lobby complete with a threestory atrium. A bank of elevators to all visitor-accessible floors is located on the western side of the building, adjacent to the entry lobby. Visitors will experience first contact with hospital personnel at the reception upon entry and be directed to their destination. A café space is provided at the northeast end of the ground floor. The hospital is designed in its entirety to consider the patient experience from the moment the patient arrives to the moment they complete their treatment and leave KCH while ensuring a high level of sustainability. Protection from the harsh sun is provided through multiple means such as self-shading exterior façades, multiple soaring canopies surrounding the building and sheltered gardens. At the entrance, a fountain provides a cooling effect while multiple lush gardens at ground level provide needed shade. The development is capped by a roof garden accessible to the public, patients and staff where it is planned to include areas for rehabilitation and relaxation. There are several key healing features that have been incorporated into the design of KCH: Design: Outside of the consideration for patient-led design, it is important to consider the external environment. We at Perkins+Will endeavor to fit our designs into their particular surroundings, considering culture, climate and buildings. The brief given to us for this project was to create something with a modern feel yet in keeping with the site’s landscape, including the skyline, nature and surrounding buildings. The exterior draws inspiration from the natural beauty of the desert and the façade is an interpretation of the shading effect generated by the textured landscape of wind-blown sand. This texture has been abstracted as an architectural expression wrapping the hospital to provide self-shading and aid in direct solar exposure. Sustainable: We have worked on the premise of using a thermal mass façade to control solar gain and cooling, reducing air-conditioning consumption needs. We have considered solar orientation and detail to include LED lighting and natural shading.

Bringing together urban design, architecture and art By: Schneider+Schumacher The new design for the external space belonging to the office development “die welle” (“the wave”) is an urban design measure with an architectural context and an artwork. Even from far away, the new sculpture in the office complex “die welle” draws attention to itself, inviting further exploration. It is an attraction that promotes the urban integration of the office complex within the adjacent inner city district. The project remit was to redesign the external landscaped area in order to enhance the office complex «die welle“, located close to the AlteOper in Frankfurt am Main. It was the name of the
complex that sparked the initial idea for Schneider+Schumacher’s design. The architects decided to take this concept further and at the same time, to explore it in more depth - in the form of a three-dimensional wave that not only defines the space and attracts attention, but also creates an inviting place where people will want to be, therefore revitalizing the area. “When we see something onto which we can project our own images, experiences and memories, it conjures up associations and emotions. It awakens our interest”, explains Prof. Michael Schumacher, who together with Till Schneider runs the architectural practice schneider+schumacher.
23
I Design, Architecture AnD Art
From “diving arch” to “chill-out wave” The resulting aluminum sculpture consists of six elements that flow, wave-like, through the entire length of space that runs between the main buildings. Three of these elements are away from the floor as arches of differing heights. Arriving from the Opernplatz, a “diving arch”, some seven metres in height first appears followed by the “glorious arch”, nearly eighteen metres high, which twists to form a semi-circular arena. A few metres on, the aluminum sculpture somersaults into a seven metre-high “joyful wave” before continuing more calmly as “flowing wave one and two”, and then petering out in a last “chill-out wave”. A new light-coloured asphalt floor surface running through the site further underpins the wave concept, and it appears to be a liquid, following its natural course. In a similar vein, and in keeping with the context, schneider+schumacher created four benches. Each one is made out a single straight piece of wood, which, owing to the way it is notched, can be bent into a wave-like form. From sketch, via screen, to sculpture In the design process, certain geometric rules had to be followed to allow the shapes of the arches and edges to be later manufactured. This meant employing a parametric system, to transform the initial sketch on paper into a geometric form, so that it could be more easily implemented in practice. Using a computer programme, this parametric design meant that the building elements could be optimised and then tested, to check how they affected the system as a whole. This resulted in a detailed construction plan, which formed the basis for the ensuing crafting process.
24
100 tonnes of aluminum, two kilometres of welded seams The entire finished sculpture comprises two kilometres of welded seams that all in all weighs around 100 tonnes. A special process had to be developed so that the seams could be welded on one side only, without causing any distortion. This redesign is another example of the architectural office’s “pragmatic poetry” design philosophy, which thrives on clarity of construction, an earnest approach to solving the architectural brief, and a delight in good detailing.

Floating on water
By: TerraVerde

In the heart of Palm Jumeirah, this luxury villa project signifies how a beautiful landscape design can both compliment the exterior of an existing property as well as the natural surrounding landscape but nonetheless still stand in isolation as an aesthetically striking outdoor area. The project overall implemented a range of various landscaping methods including irrigation, pool installation, softscaping, hardscaping, construction and bespoke carpentry. The client outlined a brief with a challenging design and build concept. They were clear that they wanted to adopt a large swimming pool and Jacuzzi, with enough capacity vacant to facilitate a comfortable “break out area embracing a Moroccan style.
The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East
Prior to the design stages, the land on site was extended further, assisting the scheme in matching the client’s high expectations, maximizing the available space. The pool has been installed strategically running parallel along the beach front. An infinity pool was the obvious style choice generating a feeling of tranquility, almost resembling swimming in natural waters. With eye level views of the sea, supplementing the pool with immersed sun beds was beneficial in adding to the already accomplished restful setting. Adjacent to the swimming pool, a large jacuzzi placed separately and raised slightly higher was ideal for continuing to maintain the soothing tone. The jacuzzi itself is unique in shape, outlining a symbolic Arabic pattern. Usually not in this form due to installation difficulties, it was certainly necessary in achieving the desired style specification briefed by the client. On the recommendation of TerraVerde, the tiling in both pools is distinct for a project of this weight. Handmade Thai, cracked glass mosaic tiles were fitted and contributes to the artistic bearing both of the pool and Jacuzzi have on the garden’s look. Opposite both pools is a sitting/dining area complete with stainless steel BBQ, essentially a complete outdoor kitchen. Natural red meranti wood is used for the decking to attain a rustic natural effect, together with beige

A black granite work top provides a great contrast in colour and texture and adds a slightly more modern twist to this otherwise organic set. The materials used in this inviting communal space are of the highest quality. The kitchen appliances sourced from Viking, also reflect this and include a fridge, ice maker and cooler, all of which are covered by a custom made pergola developed by TerraVerde. There is an array of exotic plantation used in amongst the hardscape. Asparagus ferns implanted next to the pool areas provide a soft green mist, giving translucency for the sun. Coconut trees check pointed in various spots to showcase a utopian sensibility, with fox tail plants to yet again, recite the objective. The driveway has opted for a more minimalistic flavour. Limestone paves the drive, visually dark in colour, preventing noticeable grazes and crucially, extremely durable. The entrance, steered by a

corresponding set of majestic beige travertine steps with fixed LED lights, is additionally used at the side of the building and leads to a contemporary, crystal black water feature with stainless steel cladding. This ensures that even the more rudimentary sections didn’t go unnoticed. Moreover, another set of these steps connects the garden to the beach detached by a subtle, fitted shower logically positioned so users can rinse away sand before dipping into the luxurious pool on offer. Piscine Global – Pool Vision Award 2016 In September 2016, in line with the Piscine Middle East Exhibition at the Dubai World Trade Centre, this project was awarded a prestigious Pool Vision Award for the category “Most Beautiful Residential Pool”. The Pool Vision competition was created to honour and showcase creativity and technical prowess displayed by architects and designers across the Middle East and beyond.

time, these design decisions represent some new architectural and urban nature-related resolutions for residential areas in the city. The balconies are remarkably larger than the typical sizes. Designed as spaces whose proportions are not linear but squared-shaped (3x2.30 metres), these wooden terraces were also positioned in a way not to be roofed. In this manner, the indoor-outdoor relationship is particularly frank and in the lower floors, the existing street trees actually serve as natural shades too. In order to complete the sunshade function of the bamboo screens, the vertical pieces are fixed to a 40 centimetre concrete overhang that also helps to efficiently protect the western sun exposure; double-glazing, cross ventilation and lightweight concrete slabs complement the energy-saving climate conditioning of the project. The top floor has a two metre setback which makes room for large terrace-like balconies. These lawn spaces act as green roofs, adding pervious surfaces and consequently reducing the volume of runoff, risk of flash flooding and the frequency of combined sewage overflow events. An onsite grey water treatment system is also incorporated into the project, reusing water generated in sinks and showers for toilet flushing. Reduction of the demand for fresh clean water and of the amount of waste water required to be conveyed and treated are the two most significant advantages. All in all, this uncommonly designed building in an uncommon lot of the city offers not only a new kind of fun urban scene but also wants to be part of those yet few apartment buildings in Buenos Aires where sustainable practices and design are sensibly incorporated.

Creating a landmark
By: Philippe Barriere Collective (PB+Co)
The Mahmud Qabadu Mosque in Djedeida, Tunisia has been designed to become a religious and urban landmark playing a central role within the rural community. It is positioned at the centre of twomajor axis of urban development - joining the rural park with the main commercial artery and the two large urban pedestrian plazas (one with shops, the other without).
36
The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East
This privileged setting signifies unity and centrality, reflecting the role played by Islam in everyday life. The mosque has two main entrances (one for men and one for women) opening directly to a non-commercial pedestrian plaza which can accommodate groups of worshipers before entering or exiting the mosque. Two reflecting pools establish a reverential distance and a peaceful quiet threshold between a park and the main street. At the same time - pools flow from the place of worship to the origin of the irrigation system, suggesting the sublime connection between the nourishment of the soul and that of the earth. The enclosure walls do not wholly seal the interior since as they soar upwards they gradually become more porous, ultimately transforming into Moucharaby. The cooling breeze and natural light from the park flow freely through the walls, letting the building naturally breathe,
meanwhile the floor is constantly kept warm at human body temperature. The overarching vault is erected by local masons using local materials. Its parametric design and digital fabrication involve the use of RhinoVAULT software (Funicular Form Finding The Rhinoceros® Plug-In RhinoVAULT). It is a structural form using the Thrust-NetworkApproach to intuitively create and explore compression-only structures. About Philippe Barriere Collective (PB+Co) Challenging both theory and practice, the Collective has developed a forwardthinking expertise addressing suburbanization (i.e. ParkUrbia), the Interstate Highway System (i.e. Infrastructure Architecture), social and humanitarian issues such as homelessness, refugee camps and health crises. More recently it has developed the concept of Hybrid Architecture (i.e High-Low Tech) in the Maghreb.

Mr. Gary Player
By: Bo Wood Established by CEO Marc Player in the early 1980s’ and widely recognized as the most successful global golf course architectural firm in the world, Gary Player Design has branded nearly 400 layouts with the mark of a champion. Over its existence, the firm has worked on five continents and in more than 36 countries, and prides itself on taking Gary Player and his design experience to emerging markets to help develop the game of golf internationally. The company offers three tiers of golf course design brands, Black Knight Design™, Player Design™ and Gary Player Design™ - of which Mr. Player is personally involved in each project. The cornerstone of Gary Player’s design philosophy and approach is to create playable and memorable golf courses within the constraints of a given site, while being ultra-sensitive to the surrounding environment. The result is a portfolio of award-winning and environmentally-recognized courses around the world, including the top three courses in South Africa and a multitude of Asian awards – most notably the Best Golf Course in both Hong Kong and Indonesia. The company’s portfolio includes twelve Gary Player-branded golf courses in China, eight in the Philippines, twelve in Japan, as well as others in Burma, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, India, Honduras, and throughout Europe and North America. Many of our Gary Player designed courses have hosted events on various international professional tours. Multiple rankings have also been received including by Golf Digest and Golf Magazine, and several courses have been certified by the Audubon International and Golf Environment Organization (GEO) for environmental stewardship. Gary Player Design employs not only members of the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) and the European Institute of Golf Course Architects (EIGCA), but also a dedicated team of media and marketing professionals to assist clients around the world. They currently have active projects in the US, China, Italy, Montenegro, Cyprus, Peru, the UK, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Congo. The firm also enjoys a growing global redesign and renovation business. Their flagship course in the Middle East is none other than Saadiyat Beach Golf Club in Abu Dhabi. Despite opening only a few years ago, the course has already received global acclaim, being voted as the Middle East’s Best Course for consecutive years. Professionals also have tested their skills on the Black Knight’s masterpiece overlooking the Persian Gulf. The Ladies European Tour now stages the annual Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies Open at this spectacular setting. Below, Gary Player takes you through each hole that makes up his masterpiece in the Middle East.
40
HOLE 1 A straight forward starting hole measuring 385 yards for the ladies. Two fairway bunkers flank either side of the fairway, short right and long left to create framing off the tee. The green is slightly elevated with gentle contours collecting approach shots that miss the putting surface to the right while a gentle drop off protects the left side of the green.
HOLE 2 A very strategic par 5 that requires a risk-reward decision on the second shot. Players that opt to play right on their second shot over the large fairway bunker are rewarded by a better angle into the green while the alternative play up the left side provides a more challenging approach to the green. The putting surface is protected by two collection areas and a bunker behind the green.
Hole 3 A slightly downhill par 3 requiring a precision approach shot. The green measuring only 15 yards wide and 40 yards deep, club selection will be critical on this fun and underestimated par 3. The back third of the green is protected by two bunkers, creating a very challenging back pin placement.
The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East
HOLE 4 A more traditional style hole with a series of native grass islands creating a premium on the tee shot. One must choose a yardage and direction to hit the tee shot to set up the approach shot to a narrow green that sits atop a plateau with grass collection areas behind and left of the green. A large bunker protecting the right side of the green also provides a formidable challenge
HOLE 5 A very scenic and challenging par 4 with water and views of the Arabian Gulf being introduced for the first time on the golf course. A large salt water pond defines the left side while subtle contouring frames the right side. Shooting from elevated tees, this visually stunning golf hole will be picturesque. With the putting surface only 3 meters above water level and 15 meters from the beach, you will truly feel the presence of the Arabian Gulf.
HOLE 6 A fun and sporty par 3 that plays along the beach. What more could you ask for - playing a golf hole alongside a pristine 9-kilometer beach and experiencing the crystal blue waters of the Arabian Gulf.
HOLE 7 Playing away from the Arabian Gulf, this uphill par 4 provides another unique look. The key feature of this hole is the large meandering bunker running up the entire left side, eventually encompassing the entire green complex. Gentle support along the right side helps collect tees shot to the center of the fairway. Accuracy on the approach shot is critical as the green is surrounded by a large bunker that surrounds the green.
HOLE 8 A well-placed tee shot on this hole will help set up a more receptive approach to the green. A large bunker along the right side of the landing area meanders across the centerline creating a narrower landing area the further a golfer hits their tee shot. The green sits left to right with a bunker guarding the right side of the green, therefore an approach from the left side of the fairway is ideal.
41
I golf course HOLE 9 A very challenging par 5 with critical decisions to make on the tee shot as well as the second shot. Bunkers left and right in the landing area provides a “Pinch Point” that narrows down to 20 yards unless a golfer can carry the right bunker. The second shot is framed by a series of elevated bunkers that meander along the right side. Ideal placement of the second shot is to hug the bunkers, providing the best angle into the right-to-left oriented green. A large bunker back left of the green protects the back half of this gently contoured putting surface.
HOLE 10 The shortest par 4 on the golf course doesn’t mean it’s the easiest. A large meandering bunker along the left side encroaches into the fairway, providing a risk-reward scenario. The angle of the green entices players to challenge the bunker or even taking a chance to carry the bunker leaving only a short chip shot. A long and narrow green with a deep bunker guarding the right side will require a precise approach shot.
HOLE 11 This dogleg right, par 5 will have a dramatic visual presence. A very commanding tee shot with a large fairway bunker along the right side protecting the golf hole from players trying to cut the corner. The green is protected by bunkers guarding the left side while a land form on the right collects shots towards the green.
HOLE 12 A slightly downhill par 3 measuring 195 yards encourages a right to left shot with contours helping this type of approach shot. A series of three climbing bunkers guard the left side of the green while bold landforms surround the green complex to help frame and create visual interest.
HOLE 13 Playing into the prevailing wind, this par 4 provides an interesting challenge as a large bunker runs from the tees all the way through the landing area. Using the contours along the right side will help collect shots to the center of the fairway which will be valuable on windy days. Placing the tee shot down the left side will allow a better visual awareness of the green complex and pin position. The further away from the fairway bunker you play the more blind the approach shot becomes…..strategy begins on the tee shot!
42
The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East
43
I golf course HOLE 14 Another challenging tee shot that promotes a left to right shape to maximize the fairway contours. The length of the tee shot will benefit the approach shot to this very shallow green. Very interesting and demanding green contours will require extreme accuracy, thus encouraging a shorter iron into the green.
HOLE 15 A very interesting and tactical par 5 with water playing a key feature throughout this golf hole. Accuracy is a must as a large bunker frames the right while water runs up the left and across the centerline, eventually finishing right of the green. The second and approach shots require extreme accuracy as water and bunkers frame either side of the fairway and green. It is one of the most visually stunning and challenging holes on the golf course.
HOLE 16 A fairly straight forward par 4 with length being the main challenge. Playing into the prevailing wind, this slightly downhill hole provides magnificent views of the Arabian Gulf. A large bunker on the right side frames the landing area while gentle support running down the left side will help feed balls back into the fairway. The approach shot is slightly downhill with stunning views of the Arabian Gulf.
HOLE 17 This shortest par 3 on the golf course experiences the pristine beach environment. The beach sand gradually meanders into the golf hole as a bunker defining the right side with a small pot bunker left of the green balancing the visual presence of this unbelievable stunning golf hole. Wind is a factor when trying to hit this very narrow target, thus accuracy is essential to have a chance at birdie.
HOLE 18 A wonderful finishing hole, not long, but very strategic, requiring accuracy off the tee and approach shot. A left to right tee shot is ideal as a large bunker frames the left side and a carefully positioned lake on the right adding to the challenge. A narrow landing area also provides a strategic value to this finishing hole. The green design will command a very precise approach shot as water protects the right half of the green while a well-placed collection area short or the green will gather balls landing on the front edge of the putting surface. This hole may seem very understated, but it will yield few birdies!

Creating a community By: Martha Schwartz
Martha Schwartz Partners (MSP), an award-winning landscape architecture firm with more than 35 years of global experience, has just announced completion of a 60 hectare LEED Gold candidate located in the Beiqijia Technology Business District in the Changping suburb north of Beijing, China. The forward-looking mixed-use project is an ambitious large-scale development through which a full community was created incorporating contemporary architecture and designed landscapes, with a focus on sustainability. “Beiqijia is ground-breaking because design was considered as important with function for this large-scale development,” said Martha Schwartz, principal of MSP. “This allowed for a level of creativity applied to an entire community that we think is unparalleled in the region.” The landscape is subdivided into three programmatic zones: commercial/ retail/ office, central park/ common area plus residential. A striped ground plane pattern permits differentiation within the zones. The ‘strips’ of this pattern become paving, planting or bespoke street furniture, lighting and entry gateway features that forge a memorable identity throughout the site. The green heart of the project consists of a public central park that sits adjacent to a series of sunken gardens, framed by raised gardens of perennials, hedges and ornamental grasses. People can sit along the edges or lounge on furniture placed among trees and grass.

To the north along Qui Bei Road Promenade is an Eco Zone; a linear landscape with the ecological function of collecting and absorbing storm water runoff from the impervious surfaces of the site. Seating, an area for strolling, and a sculptural gateway structure draws people into the open space. Below the Eco Zone, courtyard gardens and landscapes surround offices with individually designed outdoor spaces. The residential zone is located at the southernmost band of the site for greater privacy. It offers smaller scaled garden rooms, semi-enclosed by hedges or feature walls to provide intimate landscape experiences. A dynamic, engaging and brilliantly coloured children’s play area caters to multiple age groups with a variety of elements.
Client:
Since LEED Gold accreditation was desired, parametres were observed in the landscape strategy to address sustainable urban drainage, proposed harvesting and reuse of storm water run-off, plus reduction of urban heat island effect by increasing the green ratio. A long, curving water feature separates the private residential zone from public buildings. Originally designed to utilize harvested rainwater collected from the site and treat it - this large-scaled water element became an ornamental focal point and creates a relaxing experience for residents and visitors alike. Microclimates of the different zones were managed by screening northwesterly winter winds and south-easterly summer winds, which are further cooled by passing over the large shallow water feature. The site includes a demonstration zone completed in 2013 with an accompanying show garden. This allowed a testing ground for materials and plants and permitted the fine-tuning of the design and construction of bespoke furniture and structures.

Industrial Revitalization
Attention to detail, calligraphy, and obsession with the body and auto-destruction - these are some of the terms that spring to mind if one compares the “In Factory” of Francesco Gatti, with “The pillow book” by Peter Greenaway and “Nine objects of desire” by the Chinese author Mian Mian. By: 3GATTI 50
The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East
An Italian architect who designs the redevelopment project for an abandoned industrial area in the centre of a Chinese megalopolis, an English film director who studies with his western but bewitched eyes the sensuality of oriental ideograms, and an author from Shanghai who writes autobiographical novels in which the characters listen to The Beatles and read Freud. They each have in common - a capacity for intense narration, divided between an observation of a different rather than a foreign world, and a passion for small details. The layers with which Greenaway divides the screen, superimposing different stories analogically, can be found with an added tri-dimensional aspect in the alleys and courtyards of Francesco Gatti. The surfaces in “In Factory” lie vertically and horizontally, they are
opaque (the effect of the advertising posters), transparent (the effect of the “walls” created by a succession of metal rods), changeable (the American vine varies its aspect with each season), but above all they reflect the light (like the treated steel of the benches and the horizontal surfaces of the “ceiling”). The result is a space which interacts with the density of the environment, particularly in the main courtyard where a touch to the rods can generate a vibrating sound, and where the lamps hanging at different levels swing with the movement of the wind. The project is finely tuned to the use of materials and colours. It adopts local elements such as bowls and bamboo but using them in a Western way, balanced between naiveté and aesthetic implications (in the same way as the Chinese ideograms painted on the bodies of Greenaway’s characters); it merges the traditional and the contemporary, the nature and the artifice, the western imaginative and the oriental imaginative. From the upper levels of the surrounding buildings to the interweaving of the “virtual ceiling” with its metal rods overlooking the textured flooring, interspersed with benches, water and greenery - the observer moving along the alleyways sees the textures come to life.

I greenaway The “In Factory” is destined for auto-destruction, as the lovers in the novels of Mian Mian. Envisaged as a visiting card for the community of artists and intellectuals who gradually moved into the area, it is already beginning to show signs of being worse for wear on account of the removals and works that have been taking place recently. An enterprise on an urban scale which is incapable of surviving its original intention - to convince new purchasers to move into the areas that have been restored for professional use. Francesco Gatti has taken into consideration the possibility of his project having a short life, giving more importance to the fixed and hard-wearing flooring than to the virtual and ephemeral ceiling, created by the frame of metal cables. It is difficult to speak about a project that interweaves culture as if it were an American vine climbing up a metal
network, the articles and literature about contemporary Chinese architecture designed by Westerners living in China are without depth and as a result of the oversimplifying effects of globalization. Perhaps the “In Factory” can truly represent a different aspect of this East-West relationship, that the speed with which Chinese culture is metabolizing the gap which separates it from the rest of the world is the same whereby modern works of architecture by Westerners, who are by nature bound to a stratified cultural and historical background, are adopted and recycled in China. In this light of perennial transformation, the body (as described by Greenaway, Mian Mian and Gatti) is the only instrument through which one can survive - whether it is used to communicate, to feel pain or pleasure or to observe the space around it.

EFFICIENT, DURABLE, RELIABLE.
The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East
MP Rotator ®
Rotor - Multi-stream, multi-trajectory technology cuts through wind and reduces misting.
Arc ring - The MP Rotator provides a wide range of coverage from 1.5 m to 10.7 m with matched precipitation at any arc and radius.
Spring - The patented double-pop feature keeps the nozzle free of external debris for increased reliability.
Nozzle - The MP Rotator’s low application rate prevents runoff and conserves water.
The MP Rotator is the most efficient sprinkler nozzle available on the market today. The slow application rate allows water to gently soak into the soil, with an even distribution of water throughout the irrigated area. This results in 30% less water use when compared to traditional sprays. With only one moving part and made with the highest quality materials, the MP Rotator is built for durability in even the harshest conditions.
