Lanullva, Lyngstad Eide

WArmTH & COmfOrT - Soft and warm clothes for all ages THE HISTOrY Of LANULLVA In the village of Lyngstad close to the Atlantic Ocean, at the fare edge of Møre & Romsdal county, lived an inventive woman called Brit Vinje Lyngstad. For many years, she worked in the clothing industry. She was educated as an assembly technician and had a strong interest and knowledge of wool and textiles. Already at the age of twelve, she owned her first knitting machine.

VISIT LANULLVA

Just 8 km from the Atlantic Road

Brit ran the farm with her husband. At times, she was worried about him. After hard working days on the farm he came home sweaty and cold. Brit developed a special knit pattern that transported the sweat away from the body. Air layers and ventilation formed in the knit pattern helped to give the garments a very good insulation. This meant that he kept warm and dry. Brit was happy. In 1994 she founded the company Vinje Klær AS. The company has been constantly evolving. In 2006 the company changed its name to Vinje Ullprodukter AS, owned and run by Brits daughter Anne Gunn Lyngstad. The underwear manufactured today is in pure merino wool. The collection includes contemporary knitwear for baby, children and adults. The unique knit pattern is maintained in all products developed. Our thriving retail area is a renovated commercial brew from 1882. Welcome to us! The Atlantic Road

The world’s most beautiful drive

This ocean road has been named ”the most beautiful car journey in the world” (The Guardian 2006) and ”construction of the century” (2005). The Atlantic Road has also been named ”Norway’s finest bike ride” (2010). Truly an engineering a chievement, the road winds its way across the skerries. The 8 274-metre long highway is c onnected by eight bridges. The Atlantic Road is a national tourist route and provides an unbroken experience from the port of Kristiansund to the f ishing village of Bud. It gives you a close-up of coast and ocean, of culture and history. On the way there are places to stop to enjoy the view and do some fishing. Accommodation and small, cosy r estaurants are available all year. The Atlantic Road is as fascinating in a storm as it is on windless, sunny day. You can extend your journey along the beautiful coastal highway 680. National Tourist Roads www.turistveg.no

Håholmen

Håholmen is a place where fishermen have met, lived and worked for centuries. Today you can enjoy the idyllic atmosphere, see a film of Ragnar Torseth’s voyages with Viking ships, stay the night and enjoy the tranquillity of the islands. Kristiansund

- one of the most distinctive towns in Norway

Kristiansund lies right at the ocean’s edge out on the coast of Nordmøre. The area has been populated for more than 10,000 years. The town’s 24,000 inhabitants have Norway’s best and finest natural harbour right in the town centre. The mainstays of the local economy have varied over the years - Kristiansund is most famous as the «capital of the klipfish industry» ( klipfish = split, salted dried cod) – but the export of timber, fisheries, shipping and the ship building industry have also been important to the local economy. Today, most of the town’s income comes from its role as a base for the oil and gas activities in the Norwegian Sea. Kristiansund was almost totally destroyed as a result of fire bombing during World War II. The town was rebuilt in an open and modern architectural style, but the impressive remains of «the old town» have been preserved and are now interesting attractions. The white klipfish wharves are used for tourists and as cultural venues, and the Sundbåten boat still operates a regular service around the harbour, taking passengers to the four parts of the town, or«lands» as they are called. The area around the busy harbour is densely populated. All kinds of vessels - f erries, the Hurtigruten coastal express, supply ships and express boats - come and go and, together with the big fleet of fishing boats and pleasure craft, they certainly make for a lively atmosphere.

Hotels, holiday cabins, fishermen’s style rorbu accommodation enterprises welcome visitors. Exciting restaurants tempt diners with menus that abound in local specialities made from local ingredients. Kristiansund certainly lives up to its reputation as a shopping town, with several shopping c entres, interesting small shops with great character and big department stores. The town also has a specialised klipfish shop, a snack bar that sells real «fish and chips», great bakeries and tearooms and specialist butchers and fish mongers that all attract customers from far outside the Nordmøre area. Kristiansund is vibrant cultural centre. The town opera is one of two opera companies in Norway with around 100 performances every year. Approx. 1000 people are active in ballet or other dance forms. Water parks, golf courses, ice rinks, and arenas for football and other sports provide venues for both leisure and championships. Our colourful, charming town welcomes you!

Grip

14 km out to sea…

Don’t miss a trip to Grip – the tiny island with a big history! Once Norway’s smallest municipality, it is now only inhabited in the summer. The picturesque buildings huddle close as in a town – colourful and beautiful. In the midst of the houses stands the fine 500-year-old stave church. From mediaeval times Grip has been one of the most important fishing villages on the coast and has an exciting history! A guided tour is available on arrival. You can also explore the island on your own. Grip café serves coffee, cakes and hot and cold dishes. A small photographic gallery is open to v isitors. In summer there are daily boat trips to Grip from Kristiansund.

The Sundbåten boat

The world’s oldest public transport service in uninterrupted use

Part of Kristiansund’s cultural heritage and the world’s oldest means of public transport still in use. The first passenger boat service started up in 1876. These small passenger ferries depart from the Piren pier at the foot of Kaibakken hill and run between the four «lands», as the four areas of Kristiansund are called. A round trip takes approx. 15-20 minutes and it makes a nice sightseeing tour of the harbour and surrounding area. The locals are proud of their town, their cultural heritage and the Sundbåten boats, which they use more and more nowadays. Two departures per hour. Veiholmen – Smøla

Southern Norway’s most active fishing community

On the northernmost tip of the unique island of Smøla is the fishing village of Veiholmen. Here, in the teeth of the seething ocean, is a “little town” with streets, wharves, houses and fishing businesses. Huddling together in solidarity around a lively harbour, Veiholmen remains a genuine, living fishing village. Overnight accommodation in fishermen’s cabins, wharves and hotels allow you to life the good life. Restaurants serve seafood – unless you prefer to hire a boat and catch your own dinner. Smøla is famous for its great fishing! It also offers a distinctive, prairie-like landscape of marshes and rocky islands, perfect for trips by bike and car. You can also take part in ”Around Smøla”, a classic sea kayak expedition. Don’t miss a visit to the Guri Centre on Edøy, near the ferry landing. Its exhibition ”Encounters with the Wind” is a wonderful experience. www.gurisentret.no For information about trips and sea kayak hire: www.contrastadventure.no tel +47 95 23 12 40 www.fjordkajakk.no tel +47 40 23 70 77

The Aursjøvegen Road

A spectacular mountain road

People have crossed the mountain between the Sunndal and Eikesdal valleys since time immemorial. There are many paths in the mountains, and the hunting grounds and fishing spots in the area are still in use. The great open expanses are the domain of m ountain enthusiasts. But the Aursjøvegen Road, which runs between the two valleys, is becoming increasingly well known as a fantastic experience for modern motorists and cyclists. The road starts in the small town of Sunndalsøra and ascends the narrow Litldalen valley, where a wild, fast-flowing river cuts a path through the valley floor. Waterfalls plunge in free fall down the mountainsides starting at altitudes of up to 1,900 metres. The road twists and turns as it climbs up to the m ountain plateau. There between lakes and open mountain terrain - lies the Aursjøhytta cabin, where you can enjoy a good meal or find a bed for the night, or both. You must feel and really experience that you are on the roof of Norway. Descending Finsetlia hill, there are more, even sharper bends and views that can make more famous mountain roads «green with envy». You then arrive in the Eikesdalen valley with its 10-kilometre-long lake and Mardalsfossen waterfall - a king among waterfalls - before the road takes you down to the E resfjord. Set aside time for a trip on the tourist ferry on Eikesdalsvatnet lake, time to appreciate the lushness of the valley and the m agnificent mountains and to visit Nesset parsonage, where the famous Norwegian author Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson grew up, and the famous salmon river, the Eira. If you decide that the drive was too relaxing, try cycling the road instead, as hundreds of participants do every year in the Aursjørittet Race. www.visitaursjovegen.no www.contrastadventure.no

Sunndal - Summer Pasture Country 52

Experience it for yourself

As a guest in Sunndal Summer Pasture Country, you take part in the traditional life of a summer pasture farm along with other mountain enthusiasts, goats and cows. There, summer pasture produce is made in the traditional manner, providing an appetising experience for many tourists. The food tastes even better in the setting of a summer pasture farm surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery. You just can’t help relaxing in surroundings like this. Renndølsetra summer pasture farm is steeped in tradition, and mountain tourists have been able to enjoy a meal there and find a bed for the night since 1950. The hosts’ extensive experience with mountain tourists is apparent in the way they g ladly give of themselves and their knowledge, while serving excellent food at the old summer pasture farm they have lovingly preserved. Gammelsetra summer pasture farm lies in the Grøvudalen valley in the Sunndalsfjella mountains. Since 1970, idealistic summer pasture farmers have organised summer pasture farming courses at which participants learn how to milk and tend livestock, churn butter and make cheese. Many tourists walk in to the farm to buy summer pasture produce. It is also a tradition to serve breakfast, dinner and supper to tourists in the valley. Grøvudalshytta cabin, which offers accommodation, is in the immediate vicinity. Gammelsetra is also an excellent destination for day walks. Torbuvollen summer pasture farm lies in the Sunndalsfjella m ountains beside the spectacular Aursjøvegen Road. The farm has goats and old breeds of cows, and it serves coffee, waffles, traditional sour cream porridge and cured meat to tourists travelling on the Aursjøvegen Road. It also organises cultural walks from the farm. The Aursjøhytta cabin, which offers accommodation, is nearby. www.seterlandetsunndal.no Tourist office in Sunndal (p. 4)

Trollheimen

Mighty mountain range

The mountain area between Sunndal, Surnadal and Rindal is called Trollheimen. It has tall peaks with permanent snow, precipitous drops, but also long, gentle slopes and mountain valleys with winding rivers and thousands of big and small lakes. It is incredibly beautiful h ere pure and unspoiled and lush. The many marked paths make it easy to find your way into the mountains from Kårvatn lake in the Todalen valley, from the Innerdalen valley and from Vålåskaret in Rindal, or from the Folldalen and Vindøldalen valleys in Surnadal. Accommodation at Kårvatn at the head of the Todalen valley, Renndølsetra summer pasture farm and the Innerdalshytta cabin in the Innerdalen valley, several holiday cabin centres and Vårsøg Hotel in Surnadal, Bolme Pensjonat in Rindal, Gråhaugen mountain lodge in Folldalen and the Trollheimshytta and Jøldalshytta cabins in Trollheimen itself. Innerdalen

Norway’s most beautiful mountain valley

Drive the RV 70 road between Sunndalsøra and Tingvoll, turn off at Å lvundeid and head in to Nedal. Park your car and enjoy the hour it takes you to stroll the four kilometres in to the heart of the Innerdalen valley. The valley resembles a cathedral, dominated by the 1,394 metre Innerdalstårnet, which towers over the valley like a natural spire. A crystal clear lake sparkles on the valley floor and s treams and small rivers cascade down from the glaciers above. A network of marked paths takes you out of the valley and into the mountains, where Renndølsetra summer pasture farm lies ready to welcome you with traditional fare and farm animals, the smell of firewood heating the pots and pans on the stove, a seat at the long table and a bed in the old timbered-walled farmhouse. Further into the mountains, you come to the Innerdalshyttene cabins, one old and one new cabin, which are run by the Norwegian Mountain Hiking Association and which have long been used as a stopping place, and a place to eat and stay overnight by travellers in the mountains. Fairy-tale roads The landscape of Nordmøre is dramatic and full of contrasts

The distance from the island archipelago out at the coast to the majestic peaks of famous mountain ranges is impressively short. Deep, blue fjords cut a swathe inland, showing you the way from the coast to the mountains. While less well known than the Atlantic Road, the FV 680 road is probably no less beautiful. It runs along the foot of steep coastal mountains, crosses narrow sounds and passes through lively small villages. Look on it as an extension of the Atlantic Road – we think it deserves it. The E 39 with its great variety of scenery – typical of Nordmøre, will also please you. The road zigzags along the coast past fjord and fertile meadows. Take the time to go off the main road. The RV 65 takes you through the beautiful and mighty Trollheimen mountain range. Fantastic area for walks with many well-marked and family-friendly paths. The Surna, one of Norway’s best salmon rivers, runs through Rindal and Surnadal. You can breathe the cleanest air in Europe in Todalen and admire the fantastic Svinviks arboret botanic gardens. Along the RV 70, high mountains surround the valleys and the fjords reach very far inland. The «green municipality» of Tingvoll and the «hydropower municipality» of Sunndal offer wonderful experiences. Do not miss out on the Aursjøvegen mountain road! Along all these road, accommodation is easily found. Taste the local food in the restaurants.

Tips for an independent town tour

Take the Sundbåten ferry from Kirkelandet, stop at Innlandet and visit galleri Arnulf Øverland with its exciting sales exhibitions. We recommend a stop at Dødeladen or Barcarole if you are hungry. Take the ferry on to Nordlandet, where you can visit Nordlandet church during summer. In the summer you can stop off at Gomlaland and visit the Klipfish Museum or walk round Vågen bay back to the town. Kristiansund is a very important base for Norway’s offshore oil and gas industry. Don’t miss the exciting exhibition at the Petro Centre. Tip: Buy a day pass (NOK 60,-) for the Sundbåten ferry. For families with children, we recommend the ‘Sundbåt safari – fun quiz with great questions about the town! You will find the quiz sheet on board! The Tourist Information Office has good maps. Approx. 2-4 hours.

Fjordruta

sundalsfjella

An angler’s paradise Ocean and fjord fishing, salmon, trout and sea trout

Nordmøre is an angler’s paradise. The long coastline facing the bountiful Atlantic means a dream come true for those wanting to try ocean fishing. The complex system of long, deep fjords offers big catches and a wide variety of species. The closely scattered s kerries provide sheltered fishing in all kinds of weather. Salmon, trout and sea trout are eager to bite in excellent rivers and lakes. Ocean and fjord fishing: • Rental boats of a high standard (17-25 ft, many with sonar, chart plotters, rod holders etc.) • Short distance to good fishing grounds for fjord or ocean fishing • Accommodation in ”rorbu” cabins and apartments. Self-catering opportunities. • Facilities for cleaning/preserving fish • Cosy, friendly overnight accommodation, knowledgeable hosts • Safety well taken care of. • High species diversity, good fishing all year. 22 Activities

Salmon, trout and sea trout: • Great rivers and watercourses with excellent salmon and sea trout fishing. • Mountain lakes with trout eager to bite. • Lakes and rivers easily accessible, simple access to fishing permits. Professional facilities ready to receive seasoned anglers. Fishing guide provided if required. List of accommodation: p. 42 Here the fish bite!

Great for walkers Trollheimen, Innerdalen, Sunndalsfjella and the Fjord Route

Nordmøre is a paradise for walking enthusiasts. Its many gems include: • the Fjord Route, a waymarked trail near the coast with views of the ocean and mountain peaks • the Trollheimen mountains, with majestic valleys and towering peaks • Innerdalen, Norway’s most beautiful valley • Sunndalsfjella, high mountains with wild reindeer and musk oxen. All these areas have marked paths and both staffed and unstaffed mountain lodges for walkers. The Fjord Route is perhaps the most spectacular route. It is a c oastal waymarked trail that takes in nine lodges/cabins and four summer pasture farms. The lodges and cabins are well equipped with provisions, firewood and cooking facilities. Most of them are open, but you need a DNT (Norwegian Trekking Association) key for some of them. The Fjord Route has 190 kilometres of marked paths. It runs through varied scenery, from the coast to high mountains and has fantastic views of the ocean and the mountain peaks. The Fjord Route is the only waymarked trail in Norway to start at an airport – Kristiansund Airport – and include a ferry crossing. It is easily accessible by public transports in many places. For more information about paths, lodges, maps and suggested walks: Kristiansund og Nordmøre Turistforening (KNT) Tel + 47 71 67 69 37, www.kntur.no, turist@c2i.net For more information about organised walks: www.contrastadventure.no

The taste of Nordmøre - the taste of pure nature

Photo: www.tingvollost.no

Photo: J.H. Nybo/Innovation Norway

Photo: Nancy Bundt/Innovation Norway

The bountiful ocean is a playground for delicious fish and shellfish. Fertile hillsides provide a habitat for red deer and other game. Flowers, herbs and other fauna are full of nutritious taste. Untouched nature has a strong, fresh and genuine taste! A number of shops, farm shops and summer pasture farms have produce for sale. Many restaurants focus on local culinary traditions and ingredients. Several summer pasture farms and farms welcome visitors. First-class quality, good care of livestock and stringent requirements for environmentally friendly production are our guiding principles. Our most important ingredient is untouched nature. Kristiansund is famous for the production of klipfish. Klipfish – dried, salted cod – has been exported as a delicacy to southern Europe for several centuries. In return, we received spices and vibrant culture – the dish bacalao is a trademark of the town. Ask for b acalao at a restaurant – or maybe you would like to try making it y ourself? It is not difficult. All cooks have their own twist on this dish – find yours!

Bacalao de Kristiansund • 1 kg klippfisk soak in water to remove salt, cut in pieces. • ½ kg sliced onion • 2 kg sliced potatoes • ½ can of tomato pure • ½ can sliced sweet paprika • ½ can skinned tomatoes • 0,5 l olive oil • 3 – 4 cayenne peppers • 1 spoonful of crushed garlic • 6 black olives Start with a layer of onion, then a layer of potates and so a layer of fish. Use a heavy casserole. Mix pepper, oil, garlic, tomatoes and pure and layer over the fish. Repeat until all ingredients have been used. Simmer on low heat 3 – 4 hrs, until potatoes are c ooked. All ingredients by the grocery stores and the Klipfish store.

FV 680 – fairy tale road along the coast

RV 65 – Trollheimen, mighty mountain range

E 39 – Inland Nordmøre’s fertile landscape

RV 70 – from high mountains to the shore

The RV 680 from Orkanger via Kyrksæterøra, Aure and Tustna can safely be described as «the Atlantic Road extension». The road passes over nine big and small bridges and is worth the drive. The unique Tustnastabbene m ountains have many trails which afford magnificent views. Did you know that Inderbergsalen is S outhern Norway’s highest island mountain? Aure and Tustna’s coastal landscape is rich in skerries, bewitching mountains and good fishing spots. Several places to stay, marinas and restaurants en route. The road is particularly well suited for cyclists. If you choose to take the RV 680, take a trip to Smøla, the prairie-flat island with Norway’s southernmost fishing village. Trondheim – Kristiansund on FV 680: approx. 207 km Ferry Seivika – Tømmervåg, frequent departures.

You will enjoy the road between Orkanger/ Trondheim and Kristiansund with its great variety of scenery – typical of Nordmøre. The road zigzags along the coast past fjord and fertile meadows, and there are wild animals such as red deer in the area. Friendly hosts offer accommodation, food and activities. The Geitbåten (traditional wooden boat) is a proud bearer of t radition. Oslo – Kristiansund: approx. 195 km Ferry Halsa – Kanestraum (approx. 45 km from Kristiansund)
