Emens Auditorium is located in the heart of the campus on Riverside Avenue. The auditorium seats 3,309 and hosts a variety of performing arts events throughout the season.
Pruis Hall Pruis Hall is situated just off of Woodworth Drive next to Bracken Library. This 640-seat venue provides an intimate setting for musical performances and is used to host a variety of special events throughout the school year.

Sursa Hall Sursa Hall is located in the Music Instruction Building at the intersection of Riverside and McKinley. The hall seats 600 and features a world-class pipe organ built by the Goulding & Wood Company.

CALENDAR AT A GLANCE
This adjective struck me as particularly appropriate for Emens Auditorium this year in several respects. First and foremost, it is representative of the response to the recent expansion of our facility. For those that have frequented the auditorium over the years, the main lobby, and the balcony lobby for that matter, appear to be completely different spaces. The culmination of this construction project unequivocally is a dream come true for the Emens crew and a point of pride for the Ball State University community that has long been committed to this tremendously successful project.

Additionally there is the fundamental association to artistic expression via live performance. The most obvious connection might be the musical, Amazing Grace which reveals some of the life story of John Newton, composer of this most treasured hymn. Others will find wonder in the amazing dance of Travis Wall’s company, Shaping Sound. Or perhaps the ingenious and entertaining creation of paintings in the performance of Artrageous! will intrigue you. I also would not want to overlook some singularly outstanding artists this season at Pruis Hall, including Bria Skonberg, Mandy Harvey, and Lúnasa.

In recent seasons, our program has highlighted various instruments. This year is no exception as we focus attention on the banjo. Perhaps best described as a multistringed (4-6) instrument with a thin membrane (head) which is stretched over a frame or a resonator cavity, the banjo is typically plucked with the use of plectra.

The PBS American roots music page submits, “If the fiddle was the primary contribution to American music from northern Europe, the banjo was the primary contribution from Africa. The banjo has been called ‘the outstanding American contribution to the music of folklore,’ and can be traced back in some form to sub-Saharan cultures of the 13th century.” Alison Brown, in my opinion makes musical magic, where the terms “banjo” and “virtuoso” go hand in hand. In addition the exciting young Irish group, We Banjo 3, will be energizing our series in Pruis Hall.

The Emens Box Office will be temporarily relocated across the street to the Sursa Hall box office during regular business hours: Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. through October 2017. ALISON BROWN QUARTET IBMA Distinguished Achievement and Grammy Award-winning musician, Alison Brown not only plays the three-finger banjo, but successfully merges the traditional sounds of folk, jazz, Celtic and Latin. Today, she is acclaimed to be one of the finest progressive banjo players. Although banjos typically play “tunes” or “breakdowns,” in Alison Brown’s hands, the banjo truly sings. Part of that is the modifications she’s made to her signature model Prucha 5-string, muting the usual harsher overtones and extraneous noises, emphasizing the sweetness and melodicism.

Loren Barrigar and Mark Mazengarb share a unique musical chemistry and stage presence seldom found among musicians. MANDY HARVEY Mandy Harvey is a deaf American singer-songwriter whose dream of a choral director died when she lost her residual hearing at the age of 18 due to a neurological disorder. This Canadian singer, trumpeter and songwriter is noted as a Millennial “shaking up the jazz world.” Bria Skonberg’s unique blend of elite jazz chops, worldly rhythms and contemporary songwriting produces a sophisticated pop sound. Her sound has been compared to those including Norah Jones, Michael Bublé and Harry Connick Jr. Skonberg has performed at 100 festivals worldwide, and she is the co-founder of the New York Hot Jazz Camp and New York Hot Jazz Festival.

The Revelers, founding members of the Red Stick Ramblers and The Pine Leaf Boys — “unquestionably the two groups at the vanguard of the Louisiana cultural renaissance” — have joined together to form a Louisiana super group which combines swamp-sop, Cajun, country, blues and zydeco into a powerful tonic of roots music that could only come from southwest Louisiana. They have all appeared on the 2011 season finale of Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations, and they also were handpicked by David Simon (producer/creator, The Wire) to be featured musicians for the third and fourth seasons of HBO’s Tremé.
After the tremendous viral spread of their music in 2016, including the rare milestone for an all-indie band of nearly 20 million plays on Spotify, The Sweet Remains are excited to present live takes of songs from their three studio albums to date. An unusual band on today’s music scene, TSR is headed by 3 singer-songwriters, each of whom contribute to the writing and 3-part harmonies that define the band’s sound. Driven by strong lyrical and melodic writing, their songs easily appeal to fans of modern folk-rockers such as Ray Lamontagne and John Mayer.

LÚNASA Christmas from Ireland w/ Ashley Davis Fans of Irish music will have an early Christmas present this year. Lúnasa, one of Ireland’s most beloved traditional instrumental bands, will tour with one of Ireland’s most beloved singers, Ashley Davis. The ensemble performs songs and tunes from all over the Celtic realm – Ireland, Scotland, Brittany, and Asturias (a Celtic region in Spain). The show includes both traditional and original compositions by the band and singer Ashley Davis. Families love the opportunity to come together in this most hectic time of year to listen, laugh, tap their feet, and clap.

LE VENT DU NORD Since its inception in August 2002, Le Vent du Nord has enjoyed meteoric success. The band has received several prestigious awards, including a Juno, and is now one of the most-loved Quebec folk outfits throughout the world. The group consists of singers/multi-instrumentalists Nicolas Boulerice, Simon Beaudry, Olivier Demers, and Réjean Brunet. Some songs come from traditional folk repertoire, while others are original compositions. Le Vend du Nord knows how to deliver music that will move any crowd – to their feet and in their hearts!

Box Office Locations: The Emens Box Office will be temporarily relocated across the street to the Sursa Hall box office during regular business hours: Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. through October 2017. On the night of events, box office staff will be operating at our new Emens Box Office located at the front entrance to Emens Auditorium two hours prior to each performance to assist with will call and additional event sales. Once construction is completed on our front lawn in October, the Emens Box Office will permanently return to the Emens Auditorium front entrance.

Free shuttle service from the L.A. Pittenger Student Center will be provided for all of the Artist Series events. The shuttle runs one hour prior to the performance and resumes immediately following. Accessibility: A wheelchair accessible entrance is available through the east Arts and Communications (AC) Coke Lobby off of Woodworth Drive. This drive will remain open for patron drop off and contain a limited number of accessible parking spaces. Access to this drive is indicated in green on the map above.
