Diet may help fight epilepsy when meds fail (HealthDay News) -- For children with epilepsy who don’t ďŹ nd relief from their seizures with medication, a tightly controlled nutrition plan might help, a pair of new studies suggests. Called the ketogenic diet, the therapy provides a carefully balanced high-fat, low-
carbohydrate diet that causes the body to burn fat instead of carbohydrates for fuel. This changes the way brain cells use energy and helps to reduce seizures, according to the researchers. The ďŹ rst study compared a ketogenic diet to several other treatment options for
epilepsy, including surgery and a procedure called vagal nerve stimulation. It found that about two-thirds of kids successfully controlled their seizures with a ketogenic diet. The second study looked at whether or not introducing the diet in a slower, less restrictive manner would be effective. For most kids, it was. “Although medical therapy is our mainstay for treatment, ketogenic dietary therapy can be a very eective option,â€? said Dr. James Wheless, a spokesman for the American Epilepsy Society. Most children with epilepsy can get control of their seizures with the ďŹ rst antiseizure medication they try, according to the American Epilepsy Society. But approximately 1 in 5 kids don’t get seizure control, even after trying multiple drugs. The ketogenic diet, which is not a new approach for controlling epilepsy, is one option for those kids. Everything on the diet has to be weighed, and people have to eat a certain number of fat grams compared to the grams of protein and carbohydrates they eat, according to the Charlie Foundation for Ketogenic Therapies. This is known as the diet’s ratio. The classic ketogenic diet has a 4-to-1 or 3-to-1 ratio. For

a 4-to-1 ratio, that means 4 grams of fat for every 1 gram of protein or carbohydrate. Typical fat sources include heavy cream, bu er, and nut and seed oils. Sweets, such as cookies, cakes and candies, aren’t allowed. On stricter forms of the diet, many carbohydrate sources such as bread, rice, potatoes and pasta also aren’t allowed. A modiďŹ ed ketogenic diet has ratios of 2-to-1 or even 1-to-1. Wheless said there can be some digestive side eects such as constipation when people start the diet. And the diet is low in certain vitamins, so vitamin supplements are given. Wheless said it can be a diďŹƒcult diet to follow, particularly for young children who can’t yet grasp the consequences of not following the diet. He said that if someone on the diet chooses to eat foods not on the diet -- say, a cupcake at a party -- it’s possible that a seizure might occur. But, he added, there are ketogenic versions of foods such as cupcakes and cookies that parents could bring to parties, so their children don’t feel socially isolated. The ďŹ rst study, whose senior author is Dr. Dave Clarke of Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas, included 210 children

with drug-resistant epilepsy. They were between 8 months and 20 years old. Sixty percent were male. The children tried one or more of the following treatments. One hundred and ďŹ fty of the children had vagal nerve stimulation, which is similar to a heart pacemaker, but for the brain. VNS prevents seizures by sending out mild electrical pulses to the brain, the researchers said. Forty-four patients had an epilepsy surgery known as corpus callosotomy surgery. This procedure severs a major connection between the two halves of the brain, which stops seizures from spreading. Meanwhile, 98 children were treated with the ketogenic diet. Of the three treatments, parents reported the greatest seizure reduction with the ketogenic diet. Sixty-three percent of kids on the dietary therapy had a 50 percent or greater reduction in seizures. For those who had the VNS procedure, 52 percent had a 50 percent or greater seizure reduction. That number was 54 percent for those who had the surgery. The second study aimed to see if implementing ketogenic therapy slowly at home might be easier on children and families. The investigators also looked at whether a

less strict version of the diet would be eective, because it would likely be easier to maintain. Typically, the introduction of a classic ketogenic diet is done with a crash course during a brief inpatient hospital stay, according to study author Dr. Rajesh RamachandranNair, an associate professor of pediatrics at McMaster University in Canada. His study included 40 children up to 17 years old. They were initiated on the classic ketogenic diet, but started with a more tolerable lowratio version. And the introduction of the diet was done on an outpatient basis. If seizures weren’t controlled, the ratio was increased slowly -every two to three weeks. About half the patients had good seizure control -deďŹ ned as a greater than 50 percent reduction in seizures. Seven children even stopped having seizures, RamachandranNair said. “Our results indicated that slow outpatient initiation of the classic ketogenic diet allowed many patients to achieve good seizure control, including seizure freedom, at low ratios,â€? he said. Wheless noted that the diet doesn’t work for everyone who tries it. He said if it’s going to work, you can usually tell with a six-week trial.

The holiday season is the perfect opportunity to help your friends and family prepare for any type of emergency or disaster. The Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division is suggesting five emergency preparedness gifts worth adding to your shopping list this holiday season. “Giving preparedness items as gifts is always a great idea,” said Capt. Chris A. Kelenske, deputy state director of Emergency Management and Homeland Security and commander of the MSP/EMHSD. “It provides peace of mind knowing those you care about will be be er prepared in an emergency or disaster.” - Holiday Preparedness Gift No. 1: Emergency Preparedness Kits. When disaster strikes, power could be out and gas and water may not be available, making a fully-stocked emergency preparedness kit a necessity. At a minimum, every household should have a kit that contains food, water, a first aid kit, a flashlight with extra ba eries, clothing and a blanket. A recommended checklist of emer-

gency kit items can be found at www.michigan.gov/miready. An emergency preparedness kit for your vehicle is also a good idea, in case an emergency occurs while traveling. An auto emergency kit should include nonperishable, highenergy foods such as granola bars, canned nuts and trail mix, as well as a blanket It could save your life and the lives of your passengers. - Holiday Preparedness Gift No. 2: LED Emergency Hand Crank Lantern. During a power outage, an emergency hand crank lantern can provide a light source with just 60 seconds of cranking. Most emergency hand crank lanterns also have the option to run power from a ba ery source or utilize solar power. - Holiday Preparedness Gift Idea No. 3: Mobile Phone Ba ery Charger. Mobile phones are great to have in an emergency, but when the power goes out, a mobile phone cannot be charged. A mobile phone ba ery charger solves this problem. Some models can charge multiple devices at once and are combined with an emergency
flashlight. - Holiday Preparedness Gift Idea No. 4: Water Filtration Bo le. A water filtration bo le that removes particles and bacteria can be used in an emergency or during routine outdoor recreational activities to provide clean drinking water. - Holiday Preparedness Gift Idea No. 5: Disaster Preparedness Books for Kids. Disasters are scary. Knowing what to do can help reduce your children’s fears during an emergency. A disaster preparedness book can teach children about emergency plans in place at home, school or while traveling. These types of books also allow children to participate in their own personal preparedness. A free, printable disaster preparedness activity book can be downloaded at www. michigan.gov/miready or check with your local emergency management agency to see if they offer any preparedness books for kids. For more information on how to prepare before, during and after an emergency, visit www.michigan.gov/miready.

giving but it is also important to be conscious about spending your gift budget wisely to eliminate packaging waste, buy products that will last and patronize manufacturers and retailers known for social and environmental responsibility. So, what are some ideas? The Waterpebble is a great gift for anyone trying to lead a greener lifestyle. This gadget tracks how much water you use in your shower. After programmed, it signals a yellow light at your halfshower mark and flashes red when it’s time to turn off the faucet. Music lovers might like the iBamboo speaker. This portable bamboo speaker for
iPhones 4,5,6, and 7 requires no ba eries or electricity and has no wires — it’s just a simple block of bamboo that projects sound using natural acoustics. If the iBamboo isn’t loud enough, try eco-amp from eco-made. While it does use electricity, the eco-amp is made out of all recycled materials and can in turn be entirely recycled when it’s useful life is over—and it’s made in the USA, which helps employ Americans while saving on transportation emissions. Another ecofriendly clothing brand is United By Blue, which pays to pull a pound of trash from water bodies for each of its fashionable and comfortable items sold. Kids may not care whether their gifts are good for the environment, so it’s up to us adults to make sure we are se ing a good example and spending our money on “good” gifts. You can’t go wrong for your kiddo with a bamboo bank from Jones and Mae. The ecofriendly three-way (share/ save/spend) box teaches the importance of charity and saving. HISTORICAL NOTEBOOK by Frank Passic Albion Historian
FIRST LOCAL EMPANCIPATION DAY OBSERVANCE 100 YEARS AGO Coming up on January 1 will be the 100th anniversary of the first Emancipation Day event celebrated locally by our African-American community. It was held at the African Methodist Episcopal Church at 725 W. Cass St. on Tuesday, New Year’s Day, 1918 beginning at 6 pm. That date referenced the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, 55 years earlier. Of course, subsequent
observances were moved to the summer months in keeping with the timing of national observances to coincide with England’s proclamations abolishing slavery in the 1840s, but this first observance in Albion was on January 1. This was the first such formal celebration of that day in this part of Michigan. It attracted persons from Ba le Creek, Kalamazoo, Jackson, Ann Arbor, and Detroit. The local commi ee in charge of
organizing the event was a “who’s who” of the black leaders who had come to Albion as part of the “Great Migration.” The Albion Recorder reported, “The commi ee wish it emphasized that the program is for both white and colored people and the color line will not be drawn. Mr. Aurelius B. Legge , secretary of the local commi ee states that they expect to provide for a crowd of around 800 people and that an effort will be made to care for all who come. Bert Pierson will be master-of-ceremonies. The welcome address will be given by James E. Legge . Orations will be given by Allen Haynes, William L. Beck, Mrs. M. A. White, and James E. McIntosh.” Rev. J. E. White was chairman of the committee. Regarding Mr. Legge , the Recorder mentioned that “Aurelius Legge , secretary of the commi ee, spent three years at Tuskegee Institute, Alabama, founded by Booker T. Washington.” The celebration
included musical quarters, duets, solos, violin numbers, congregational singing, and readings. One prominent speaker that evening was local black leader Willie L. Beck (1882-1958). The Albion Recorder stated, “Try me,” said Mr. Beck, “is the cry that is coming up from the black men in 48 states. Let me paint you a picture. I read the other day that a colored man had stolen $800 worth of clothing from the Hahn Brothers store; then in a few days I read that $18,000 was stolen from the bank at Concord— and that ladies and gentlemen, was stolen by white men. All we want in Albion,” concluded the speaker,” is a fair chance. We will try to be worthy and to make good in this community.” Note: It is Mr. Beck who is pictured in the center of that memorable May 1, 1927 Emancipation Day photograph taken in Albion ten years later that is on the cover of my book “Albion
in Review.” The main speaker for the evening was industrial professor Oliver S. Lee of Fort Wayne, Indiana. Lee subsequently became the second African-American hired on the Fort Wayne police force, in 1919 as a patrolman. In his nearly hour-long address he stated, “The Emancipation Proclamation is the greatest paper ever signed by mortal man, greater than the Declaration of Independence.” Lee also encouraged participation in our election system. He stated, “Every Negro should use his ballot as a sacred thing. The colored man usually voted the right ticket, and that ticket was the Republican ticket.” Such were the politics of those days.
