With ingenuity expressed from the indigenous people of the Amazon, native crops, the diverse ethnic population, favelas, and street art, Brazilians continue to progress and create something vast and beautiful from something small and undesirable. Brazilians embrace the urban lifestyle through being outdoors, socializing on rooftops with neighbors, and creating art on existing the urban landscape. By encompassing what they have through innovative and artistic style, Brazil’s cultural identity has overcome the test of time with an optimistic and fulfilled perception of life.

Employee engagement and well-being starts with a flexible and collaborative workplace that fosters physical, mental and emotional health through design. An overall sense of comfort in the space provides users a feeling of home and the urban lifetstyle in the workplace. Brazilians embrace the urban lifestyle through being outdoors, socializing on rooftops with neighbors, and creating art on existing the urban landscape. Immense amounts of natural light floods the building, with glass walls that surround the enclosed rooms on the perimeter that allow sharing of this vital resource. Other biophilic aspects such as water, native and natural vegetation fill the space. Circulation is clear as pathways that start at a small volume invite you into larger and more social spaces at a large volume. Users easily move through the spaces in an organized fashion. Design elements create zones of experience and dictate the type of activity of spaces such as the quiet headsdown work zones, the collaborative and communal work zones, and the open and social activity areas. Spaces that function cohesively are clusters in blocked formations. Casual furniture selection and layout dictate lounging and social hubs. More streamline and formal desks and tables dictate work stations. A mix of informal meeting spaces and workstations also occur in every space whether it is focused or open and social to give users optimal choices on where and how they work throughout the building. A large cafeteria encourages social activity, intimate seating, and various choices of food that embrace Brazil’s social importance of dining and nourishment. An enormous recreational center encourages fitness and social physical activity that fosters Brazil’s fun and active culture.

ACHIEVING WELLNESS SHOWCASE BOOTH DESIGN FOR THE INTERNATIONAL WELL BUILDING INSTITUTE LIVING FUTURE CONFERENCE AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS GROUP PROJECT
ROLE: CONCEPTUAL DEVELOPMENT AND APPLICATION FLOOR PLAN DESIGN MATERIAL AND FURNITURE SELECTION

Booth Entrance
Floor Plan Scale: 1/8”= 1’-0”
OBJECTIVE
Design a trade show booth into a branded, visually inspiring, and original design to advertise the International WELL Building Insitutue (IWBI) at the Living Building Conference. The booth demonstrates and educates the attendees what IWBI is, what IWBI represents globally, and why working with the IWBI is the future of wellbeing and the built environment. There is an area for IWBI to greet and engage members and potential members attending the Conference. Another space allows for respite for IWBI Members, as well as serve as an area that allows for IWBI Members to have informal client meetings.
CONCEPT
Through clarity, consciousness, and aspiration the International WELL Building Institute promotes buildings with human health and well-being at the forefront of design. The booth which is a circular shape that creates a curvilinear flow of movement throughout the space, follows the graphical organization of the IWBI logo. Wall finishes consist of reclaimed wood planks that create the repeating curvilinear lines as well as a recycled glass finish with overlapping lines in a cool color scheme also represented in the logo. Just as users in the built environment experience clarity through the principles of healthy air, light, water, nourishment, and fitness, attendees of the booth will experience this in the illuminated and comfortable space with soothing sounds of clean flowing water and soft colors. The opaque glass walls also provide clarity into the space, giving people a sense of the design to invite them in without giving away too much of the exhibition.

IWBI is socially and environmentally conscious, encouraging design that is healthy and sustainable. This is demonstrated in our natural and sustainable materials and elements that promote mental, physical, and emotional health. Our attendees will experience consciousness in the well-lit and well-ventilated space and interactive and educational features that foster the principles of air, light, comfort, and mind. When occupants of the built environment have access to all resources, they aspire and to reach their full potential. The authenticity of this booth inspires design to help people maximize and achieve mindfulness and wellness through a versatile space that demonstrates the benefits of access to healthy resources in a tranquil and comforting space.

CONSERVING THE CANOPY OF LIFE EDUCATIONAL FACILITY FOR AMAZON RAINFOREST SERVICE (IDEC COMPETITION) MIAMI, FLORIDA GROUP PROJECT ROLE: CONCEPTUAL DEVELOPMENT AND APPLICATION FLOOR PLAN DESIGN MATERIAL AND FURNITURE SELECTION
17

3D Rendered Floor Plan Scale: 1/8= 1’-0
OBJECTIVE
The Amazon Rainforest has been a vital geographical location celebrating biodiversity in nature and culture. Over several decades, deforestation and human settlement has reduced the abundance of life that resides in the Amazon region. To entice visitors, this educational facility will immerse people in the natural environment, the importance of conserving the diverse life and culture and inspire people to engage in reforestation and preservation work for the Amazon. The environment will be apparent through implementation of natural materials, water features, natural light, an eclectic color palette, and different levels of design elements. The three classroom spaces have windows to provide a view or quick access to the exterior landscape that serves as an outside classroom space. This connection will further engage users in the natural environment and improve productivity and well-being.
CONCEPT
The life in the high treetops that create the overarching canopy as well as the life down in the land creates a range of diversity and natural existence in the rainforest. This inspires design elements such as skylights, ceiling clouds, and tall native Amazon trees in the lobby atrium that represent the abundant life that resides in the protective canopy. The small river simulation in the lobby, native foliage, and the bordered flooring patterns that wrap around the organic and curvilinear walls represents the life that resides down in the land. Visually and psychologically this creates a range of design elements at different heights, which will immerse users in the atmosphere of the rainforest and demonstrate diversity. The natural light flooding the space from the skylights and windows through the tall trees in the atrium and colorful ceiling clouds will mimic the rhythm of illuminance from the sun rays peeking through the trees in the rainforest, which expresses sustainability and the importance of balancing solar radiation and rainfall.

As the rainforest represents over half of the planet’s remaining rainforests, and contains the largest, most biodiverse group of species in rainforests around the world, climate control and preservation are important to the land and the native people of the Amazon. According to archaeological excavations, human inhabitants first settled at least 12,000 years ago and developed their language, culture, and other ways of life with the means that the rainforest provided for them. This facility will celebrate diversity and sustainability through a variety of design elements, natural materials, and natural light. Designing an educational facility for service learning for work in the Amazon Rainforest will immerse people in the natural environment similar to the atmosphere of the location of the trip. Along with the significant service education, positive graphics and natural materials in the designed space will further engage users in the conditions of the Amazon and the work needing to be done. Windows and quick access to the outdoors help users and educators with productivity and wellbeing while creating an overall quality indoor environment. Service learning aims to promote people to serve community global goals and outcomes on a global scale.
