like to think that August Heckscher would be proud to know that 95 years after he founded The Heckscher Museum it still embraces his principal philanthropic passion.

The current Philanthropic Giving Pledge fostered by multi-billionaires Warren Buffet and Bill and Melinda Gates encourages the wealthiest individuals to dedicate the majority of their fortunes to philanthropy. The notion of giving away most of one’s wealth to charitable causes is, of course, nothing new, as many instances can be found among philanthropists of earlier generations. August Heckscher is one such example. He too believed in giving back to a society that afforded him pathways to success. His charitable priority was child welfare. He is quoted as saying “God in his great kindness has given me wealth. . . . It is my plan to spend much of this for the uplift of children especially.” This preference later made its way into the text of the founding document of the non-profit corporation that today manages the Museum. In 1957, the New York State Board of Regents granted an Absolute Charter to The Heckscher Museum which states clearly that it operates “. . . for charitable and educational purposes and for the use and benefit of the inhabitants of the Town of Huntington and especially of the school children . . . .” Museum leadership strives to fulfill this mandate by investing significantly in K-12 educational programming. In this regard, we are especially proud to report that during 2014 the Museum Discovery Programs, the flagship of The Heckscher Museum’s educational initiatives, served nearly 7,000 schoolchildren, an increase of 28% from the year before!

Before Selfies: Portraiture through the Ages
The urban experience is an ever-changing tableau of daily activity. For young and old, work, relaxation, and play unfold on the city streets, revealing an anonymous humanity engaged in endeavors familiar to all. Selected from the Museum’s Permanent Collection, this exhibition is a portrait of New York City—its work-a-day life, shopping avenues, and iconic transportation system. Featured artists include Berenice Abbott, N. Jay Jaffee, Martin Lewis, John Sloan, Garry Winogrand, and others.
Through August 9 Before the advent of the camera and the more recent phenomenon of social media and the selfie, preserving an image of one’s likeness required the skills of a trained portraitist, whose work often revealed more than details of physiognomy. Before Selfies features over four-dozen drawings, paintings, and sculptures from the Museum’s Permanent Collection that present various approaches to conveying a subject’s likeness. Self-portraits and images of fellow artists, family, and friends reveal the artist’s most intimate world, while images of public figures, unidentified sitters, and character types describe our collective experience. Changing concepts of beauty, diverse approaches to depicting male and female subjects that reflect underlying gender roles, and commentary on modern life are ancillary themes. Works by Thomas Anshutz, William Merritt Chase, Edward Curtis, Thomas Eakins, Red Grooms, Henri Matisse, William Sidney Mount, Fairfield Porter, and many others are represented.

From his early days in Huntington to his “golden period” in Greenport, James D’Aquisto became known as the world’s greatest archtop guitar maker from the late 1960s until his passing in 1995. Honoring the D’Aquisto legacy, his guitars were featured in the 2011 Guitar Heroes exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Peter Rogine, renowned guitarist and Five Towns College professor, will discuss the life and work of this innovative guitar builder and perform jazz classics on D’Aquisto instruments. Several historical D’Aquisto guitars will be on view for the evening.
Exploring Art…Making Memories
Through August 2 The August Heckscher Collection, which comprises the core of the Museum’s holdings, was particularly strong in historical European portraiture, as was typical of early 20th-century collecting in America. This installation features works from our founding collection, installed to evoke the ambience of an upper class turn-of-the-20th-century home. Highlights include portraits by Sir William Beechey, Sir Henry Raeburn, and George Romney, as well as works by Nicholas de Largillierre, Franz Wolfgang Rohrich, and Antoine Vollon.

August 15 – November 29 The 20th century witnessed an explosion in printmaking as new processes were developed, print studios became established, and artists responded to the visual appeal of graphic design. This Permanent Collection exhibition features a selection of landscape, figurative, and abstract work produced using a wide range of traditional and modern processes. Featured artists include Romare Bearden, John Steuart Curry, Stuart Davis, Red Grooms, Risaburo Kimura, Robert Kipniss, Roy Lichtenstein, Henry Moore, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, Emilio Sanchez, Tom Wesselman, and many others.
James Rosenquist: Tripartite Prints August 15 – November 22 In the 1970s, James Rosenquist created a series of large lithographs that are characterized by their horizontal, tripartite compositions. Constructed of fragmented and juxtaposed images depicting various brightly colored icons, including tire tracks, stairs, nails, stars, orbits, and the American flag, these prints reference many of Rosenquist’s persistent themes—communication, space exploration, his 1971 car crash—conveying complex messages about our culture, science and technology, and the artist’s social and political concerns.

Street Life: Private Moments/Public Record Opens August 15

Henry Varnum Poor, The Disappointed Fisherman, n.d. [detail]. Gift of the Baker/Pisano Collection.

like to think that August Heckscher would be proud to know that 95 years after he founded The Heckscher Museum it still embraces his principal philanthropic passion.
