Project Prompt With the given site on the upper west side, design a flower shop that challenges the traditional notion of the cut flower.

Existing Condition Analysis During my analysis of the existing conditions I took note of where nature was and wasn’t present. There are clear lines (sidewalks and roads) where we define parks and where nature belongs. Central park is located a few blocks away from the site; a large well defined space as a public park, yet we don’t have small spaces to enjoy nature indoors. I choose to work with grasses because they are easily shapeable, can be grown indoors and have a beautiful spectrum of colors through their life span.

Design Concept The line. Boundaries. Separation. Colors of alive, colors of dead, human non human, inside outside, public space, private space, for profit non for profit, inside outside, ground, sky. What lies in between? My design concept brings public nature indoors to create a space where you can enjoy grasses inside and if you so desire, buy a grass arrangement.

Isometric Form Generation I took the shape of a meadow, the idea of a horizon, and the non physical line that separates the alive from the dead to generate the interior forms that would define the park.

Material Palate The space is comprised of two materials -plaster and grass. Grass being the main material of the space that would change daily and seasonally. material palate

Product Rotation Every season grasses will be planted, grown and eventually be cut to become material for the park and material for purchase. The fully dried grasses will be hung from the ceiling creating the line between alive and dead grasses. The grasses would be highly manicured for specific heights.

Seasonal Change This space changes daily and seasonally as the grasses are purchased and as the grasses dry out. Consequently, the seating changes and responds to stock. There are spaces for two people to sit or places for people to sit alone. Although the space changes over time the horizon does not. The growing grasses are cut to ensure they are four feet tall and the dried grass on the far wall correspond. The grasses are manicured for specific heights to amplify the feeling of an indoor horizon and to amplify the notion of nature indoors.

Project Prompt Design a space for two people to drink water on the third floor hallway. Create a space that heightens their experience of drinking water.

Existing Condition Analysis The assigned space had pre-existing interior environmental conditions where the presences of water subtle. There was abundant light, a viable water transport system (pipes) and the record of water.

Design Concept Based on the existing conditions of water, sunlight and decay from the presence of water, the design concept was to create a space subject to the dynamics of persistent water. Water would leek from the pipes along the walls and combined with sunlight and an enclosing, the walls would be subject to the amplification of the dynamics of water - causing cracks, decay, mold and growth. The environmental constants are dripping water and sunlight. The environmental variables are growth and decay - the physical manifestation through cracks, decay mold and growth. This page depicts the existing conditions and the page on the right depicts the predicted conditions.

CADMAN PLAZA
P3 BROOKLYN, NY SUMMER IN CONSTRUCTED ENVIRONMENTS STUDIO, THE NEW SCHOOL
Project Prompt Cadman Plaza is a park located between the Brooklyn Heights historic neighborhood and downtown Brooklyn. Within the park lies the WWII memorial. The goal of the project was to redesign the monument to function as space for an indoor/outdoor market and brewery.
Existing Condition Analysis From the division of space to the division of nature, the park was highly segregated. The wall-like memorial functioned as a partition causing the north of the park and south of the park to act as separate entities. This resulted in the northern space being highly utilized and the southern space entirely underutilized.
Daily Average Usage = 75% utilization by park visitors = 5% utilization by park visitors = 0% stulization by park visitors

Existing Condition Analysis (continued) The park was comprised of all flat right angles – the building itself and the landscape architecture were highly divided through right angles. The highly organized park caused the space to feel rigid and unwelcoming. Additionally, it caused ridged separation between humans, buildings and nature.
Isometric Form Generation Through shearing the right angle, the building became space for activation; the structure itself became space for growing plants, and for walking. As a series of sheared units with multiple entry points, it allowed for circulation and continuity drawing visitors in.
Design Concept Collage Through the use of oblique angles I sheared the once rectangular structure resulting in rectangular modules where the building became permeable to both nature and park visitors. It served as an activation structure reaching out into the arms of the park to draw park goers in.

MATERIAL EXPLORATION
MFA INTERIOR DESIGN MATERIALS & PERFORMANCE THE NEW SCHOOL
Egg Shell Tiles The assignment called for the creation of a composite material with new characteristics. Using ground egg shells and plaster we created speckled tiles. Each tile has a varied amount of egg shells to test the structural qualities of the tile.
