AUF WIEDERSEHEN. How does the industry deal with the departure of some of our favorite creative directors? Written By Kristin Terrana

It seems as though a cloud has drifted over the fashion world, compelling some of the industries finest to step down from their positions as creative directors. With the recent departure of Raf Simons from Dior, and Alber Elbaz from Lanvin, it leaves fashionistas wondering: who’s next? Although Raf Simons, who still has his namesake menswear brand, based in Belgium, is on good terms with Dior after his departure, that isn’t the case with Elbaz. The
highly publicized feud between Alber and the brand has been a shocking look into an ongoing he-said, she-said. Lanvin claimed Elbaz’s departure was due to a lack of “creative designs” in a statement released earlier this fall. In retaliation, a letter was sent out to the public from Elbaz stating his wishes that Lanvin can “find the business vision it needs to engage in the right way forward”. This passive aggressive back and forth is not the first time there has been heat between creative
directors and their respective brands. With the fame attached to a modern creative director position in this era, one has to question whether the icon status of a creative director is beneficial or detrimental. The daunting demands of a brand that a creative director becomes thrust into is intimidating and sometimes overwhelming, particularly when the designer chosen has their own label to work with. This was the case for Alexander Wang, who just showed his last collection as creative director of Balenciaga, a position he held for a mere two years. The idolization of a creative director creates nothing but a domino effect. The higher the pedestal the designer is put on, the easier it is for them to fall. From one season to another, a well loved brand could fail miserably because of what was expected from them, or worse, the designer could have their collection compared to their namesake collection, out the same season.
While there is no solution for this phenomena, there is plenty to consider because of it. Will we continue to be hard on these creative directors? Of course. It’s what we do. But something has to change in an industry where in the past year, more than a handful of creative directors, presidents and more have stepped down from their positions, nixed portions of their company, and failed to impress at fashion week. There is undoubtedly a shift in the industry happening, and these departures are merely a catalyst. In 2016, prepare to see a new generation of designers coming forward as industry standards. Who of the current batch manages to stay on top is still up for debate, but for a few, we have our fingers crossed. One can only hope that when announced, the next creative directors of the companies we idolize will be able to handle the immense pressure it takes to put out stellar work every season, because we will be judging them, harshly.

We know this design looks super intimidating, but trust us, it’s way easier than the result looks. Honestly, you can do this an hour before you go out and it will look like it took you all day. Start by cutting small triangles that will fit on your nails out of the transparent tissue with your manicure scissors. Have your tweezer or wax pencil (like the kind you use to set your brows) at the ready so you’re not fumbling when you start. Then, paint your nails with your fave basecoat, and give it a minute to dry. You should know this step, at least. Once you’re prepped, with the iridescent polish of your choosing, (we like Essie’s Kisses & Bises), paint one thin coat and let dry. Starting on one nail, paint another coat of iridescent polish, and quickly pick up a triangle of paper and place it on your nail. Map out and place a few more until you’re satisfied. Finish up the triangles on the rest of your nails, or just do an accent nail or two or three. Let dry very well so your top coat doesnt shift the triangles out of place. Apply 1-3 coats of quick dry top coat to really seal the mani, and you’re done!
