“John Holt, Daft Punk, Blood Orange, Johnny Osbourne—I have too many songs in my head,” says DJ Alexandra Richards, as she lists off names of musicians she’s digging these days. She hesitates for a moment, and then adds, “This one is kind of funny, but I have also been listening to a lot of Kelis and that song she did with Andre 3000.”

She pauses to laugh for a moment. That song happens to be called ‘Millionaire.’ Though she might be part of a millionaire family (her dad is Keith Richards), she doesn’t act like it. She is polite, refreshingly laid back and about as normal as one can be if they grew up on tour with The Rolling Stones. Here, we chat with her about her Moroccan-inspired FP shoot, teaching Dad about the music business today, and more.

what instruments do you pl ay ?

This super soft, long, leather, purple jacket. It’s perfect to throw over jeans and a T-shirt. It seems like it would be great for those chilly nights in the summer or fall.

I played the violin growing up, but not anymore. I gravitate towards string instruments. I picked up ukulele when I was 20, then graduated to guitar because I thought that would be helpful, but I was totally wrong. My dad teaches me a lot of the blues chords.

I actually haven’t been to Morocco. That is one place I have been dying to go to. One of my best friends just moved to Marrakech, so when I have some down time, I am going.

Yes. He is so shocked by the whole business. I don’t want to say he doesn’t like what I do, but it’s taken the house band out of the picture. I just tell him that as a DJ, it’s a great way to promote music. I’ve just been giving him a taste of my own view of the music world.

There are all these beautiful pictures of my father there in his 20s. He used to go there a lot when he was younger and he would stay for weeks at a time to rehearse and soak up the sun and the sea. My family’s home in Connecticut is very Moroccan-inspired and over the years, I have picked that up, too. It was definitely not your typical way to be raised, living on tour and studying with six of your best friends and a tutor. We grew up a lot faster than most kids and caused a lot of trouble, but we all turned out OK. I remember going to Argentina and being like 9 years old and the crowd knew every lyric to every song (even though it was a different language for them). It was such an impressive thing.

i bet you have also taught him a few things about the music business and djing these days

what ’ s next for you ?

I’ve been DJing here in NYC for eight years, plus I still always have modeling and I’m a contributing editor for Town & Country. I studied jewelry in college and have been designing things here and there, so once I get the ball rolling, I might start something with that.

We caught up with the rising star in between her travels to the south of France (where she originally hails from) to hear more about that ever-elusive French style, her debut in a lead role and more.

you are just naturally chic ...

Maybe it’s just watching my grandmother and my mom when I was a kid. It’s like cooking. People asked me how I learned to cook and I didn’t. I just watched when other people were doing it. They are very similar. It’s just about putting things together well. come fall , what are you most excited to wear ?

Cashmere sweaters.

It’s my first real leading role—very exciting. We were filming in upstate New York and I had to run around in the snow with a pregnant belly for most of it (I don’t know why they always make me pregnant in movies). In that sense, it was physically quite demanding, but I like challenges. aside from the debu t o f h , wh at d o yo u have coming up ?

I just finished a series with watercolors that will be published in L’Officiel Hommes. I am also working on a small exhibition to show in the south of France during the Photography Festival. I mainly do portraits and shots of hands and faces.

“The first album was about loss and heartache,” says Natalie Bergman, who makes up one half of the musical act, Wild Belle, along with her older brother Elliot. “The new one [album] is really about finding love and talking about how I don’t ever want to lose it because it feels so good.”

It’s late May, and Bergman and her brother have been hard at work on their forthcoming sophomore album. If she’s feeling any pressure to follow up on the band’s hugely successful first studio effort in 2013, Isles (a mix of rocksteady, reggae, soul and African sounds), she doesn’t show it. “We’ve come a long way from the first record,” she says. We caught up with the Wild Belle frontwoman to hear more about her musical and style evolution, relocating to Chicago, and her dream gig.

Here’s what she had to say:

you are a former brooklynite , but have recently returned to your hometown of chicago . do you find it to be a more inspiring pl ace for music ?

I am in Chicago because I am trying to finish my second record and I thought it would be more of a calm, peaceful place with fewer distractions. My family is here, and it’s a creative place for me to work. Also, I fell in love with a dude in Chicago, so... what can you tell us about the second album ?

We just got back from Nashville (where we did some work with Patrick Carney of The Black Keys), then we went to Jamaica for a week and did some music there, and then we are off to Toronto in a few days to finish up the record. It’s a little darker than Isles. I think the record has a little more of a spooky vibe than the first one. what is one of the best with your brother ?

We see eye-to-eye on lots of things and I feel like we share the same vocabulary. I think it’s because we grew up listening to the same records and saw the same things. It’s really a special thing to get to work with your sibling.

it sounds like you have always had a fl a i r f o r fa s h i o n . how has your st yle evolved since officia l ly l au n c h i n g your musical career ?

I have always been conscious of style and presentation, it goes hand-in-hand with my music. I just know what I like—vintage guitars, cool blouses that look groovy, pants (because I think they are more powerful than dresses), art that looks like a child made it, stuff from flea markets, etc. I have been recycling clothes from my mom’s closet from the ‘70s for years. what has been one of the greatest exper i e n c e s i n yo u r wi l d b e l l e career so far ?

We played a show last week in Alabama and it was so magical. We got to play this gorgeous festival right on the beach and afterwards, our whole band went swimming. My mom used to encourage me to do open mics when I was really young. I just remember when I was about 9 years old, I sang this Lucinda Williams song in a talent show and wore a leopard cowboy hat. Everyone in my school was like, ‘This girl is the coolest thing ever.’ That was like my debut into Chicago.

t was 2008 and I was living with my then-boyfriend in Los Angeles, sharing a ‘20s style duplex with hardwood floors and jalousie windows that leaked cold air during California winters. He was—and is—a photographer. We met on the set of a shoot I didn’t want to show up for on account of extreme sleep deprivation and general laziness. I remember the point when he reached over and pushed my chin towards the light in a certain way and I could tell, right then and there, that this was the person for me, at least for a time. No matter the duration, you meet people for reasons, and his was to push me towards another chapter of my life, which was out of a career modeling and into writing.

At that point, I had been a model for four years, the catalyst of which was a conversation with a music manager on an airplane between New York and Los Angeles. I was wearing a hooded sweatshirt and doing calculus homework for a class I was barely passing when I told him I wanted to do A&R. “Don’t get on a sinking ship,” he told me, with wry post-Napster malaise, and then suggested I talk to his friend, an agent in Los Angeles.

And so, just like that, I started. I traveled, sat in makeup chairs, walked in runway shows, met weird people, met amazing people. In the beginning, it was great, but soon enough the novelty begins to wear off, like gold rings rubbing down to brass cores. You find yourself having the same conversations about what agency pays on time, who was dating who, what juice cleanse was someone was on. The constant sinusoidal flux of acceptance and rejection inherent to booking jobs begins to wear on you, too. You get a bit older, and more confident in who you are as a person. You want to start being you, not just someone’s vision of you… however beautiful that vision might be. You want your own voice.

Everything started will a blog—three-hundred-word anecdotal essays about getting sick on airplanes, having my wallet stolen, road trips in old mini vans. I was doing it for myself, mainly, until people began responding to the work, like someone had opened up my journal and deemed it passable for publishing. I kept going, even after the boyfriend who told me to write every day and I broke up. Especially after we broke up. I packed up my things and moved to New York. That’s when everything changed, like the world had expanded and I was placed in its center and handed a pen. I found an apartment in Brooklyn with trees outside all the windows and white paint on the walls. I could ride my bike down to a pier along the East River and watch ancient Polish fishermen drinking beers out of paper bags while they caught nothing. And I wrote about all of it—wrote about the boys and the heartbreak and the seasons changing. I wrote and wrote and wrote until finally people starting hiring me to write for them. I wrote so much I didn’t need to model anymore. I wrote until I became a writer.

rowing up in northern California, there was never much of a need for a heavy-duty winter coat. In the coldest months of the year, temperatures rarely dipped below the 40s, but that never stopped me from wanting the perfect coat. With great fondness, I remember back-to-school shopping with my mom every summer in late July. Nevermind that it was the height of the summer heat, and nearly 90 degrees outside—the latest fall fashions had just hit the stores and I had to be there the day they put out those jackets. My mom would pick me up from swim practice, I would be wearing shorts, sandals, and a tank top, and toting my notes on the latest trends and jacket styles I thought I might want. Oh, the irony of shopping for fall/winter in your shorts. That was a ritual that started as early as 8 years old, and it’s one I still carry on as an adult today (unfortunately, my mother doesn’t typically join me on these outings, and I’m not coming from swim practice).

Acquiring a new piece of outerwear has come to be a symbol of change. In the early days, it meant new teachers, new friends, and new extracurricular activities were just around the corner. As silly as it might sound, I can recall school years and the memories that surrounded them by coats. There was a cherry red swing coat, a classic, double-breasted navy peacoat, a cropped leather bomber I just had to have, a camel-colored trench, and the list goes on and on. You get the picture, I won’t bore you with the memories associated with them.

Even if the first day of school wasn’t nearly cold enough to warrant a jacket, I would still bring one. It completed the look I had in mind and I wasn’t going without it, no matter how silly it might have looked to my peers. It meant it was time to buckle down for school and summer was over. In retrospect, it was like a placebo of sorts. There was nothing to it but fabric, but it helped change my mental state from fun and summer to hard working, student mode. These days, I have a newfound appreciation for the perfect winter coat after surviving several of New York City’s harshest, coldest winters in history. More so than ever before, a new jacket is a symbol of the changing seasons. I like to invest in a new coat so it feels like the darkness of the winter prior isn’t carrying over to the next one. It must be both stylish (since your coat is often the only part of your outfit that the world sees every day for months on end), and highly functional. After 2014’s epic Polar Vortex, I have never felt more grateful for jackets made of extra cuddly fabrics like shearling, soft leather, and fur. The first day of New York Fashion Week is my new version of back-to-school. Talk about pressure—with swarms of photographers lining the entrance to the shows, you had better look your best. This season, when it comes to coats and jackets, there are so many trends to love, I’m finding it hard to narrow down my picks. Already on my wish list are cozy, knit sweater jackets (they were all over the runways at the Fall 2014 shows), biker jackets, anything with an oversized, menswear-inspired shape, and pieces that

What I especially love to find is an unexpected detail, whether it’s a 70s print lining on the inside, or studwork on a classic leather jacket. It’s those little details that set you apart from every other black-jacket-clad woman on the subway.
