arcchi - atelier 2014
“Archhi” derives from the Oraon word for bamboo grove and “Atelier” is French for workshop. In English, it is used primarily for a workshop for artists, where a principal master along with assistants, students and apparentices work together. A vision for a co-operative and non-profit establishment for the unemployed, under-employed and people living in dire conditions in the city of Ranchi.

With “Archhi-Atelier” coming into place, along with the lake’s revival, it will bring all the small scale industries scattered around, under one roof. It will focus on the recycle and reuse of products produced by these small scale industries and at the same time revive the age old tribal culture, by training them to design and produce products made of locally sourced materials like bamboo and timber.

Ranchi has a subtropical climate. Summer: 20 °C - 37 °C Winter: 2 °C - 22 °C Monsoons offer average rainfall.
The building is located on the S-E bank of the lake, the structure evolves towards the West. It also slopes towards the S-E direction so as to not oppose the natural prevailing wind flow. Existing vegetation have not been compromised or cut down, but incorporated within the design
The skeletal frame acts as the main shell of the building, at the same time supports the growth of climbers and creepers which complients the natural surroundings. Main functional zone, focused on better working conditions, is cantilevered on the north side so as to gain maximum north light and comfort zone.

rolled-hollow steel sections rectangular steel sections
BAMBOO AS AN ENGINEERING MATERIAL The tensile strength of bamboo is reletively high which makes it an alternative to steel in tensile loading applications. Since bamboo is also a locally sourced building material, it has proven to be the best option for construction of Archhi-Atelier.
Rolled hollow steel sections, compliment the natural growth of creepers and climbers on the exoskeletal structure which act as temperature and noise control barrier, hence keeping the interior spaces well ventilated, cool and peaceful

Design of a steel intensive (B+G+8) super speciality Cardiac hospital in Kolkata. Design should be innovative using the unique advantages of steel as a medium of architectural expression. Our basic approach towards the problem was to design a hospital with a unique and healthy interaction between the building, nature and patients. This design was one of the top 12 selected entries in the national finals of INSDAG 2013 Competition for Architecture The design was executed as a group of 3 members.
STRUCTURE The inspiration for our structure comes from Architect Toyo Ito’s award winning Sendai Mediatheque, Japan HOSPITAL BLOCK
CONCEPT The Jenga Block system create a balance between the built and the natural environment for the inmates: • Creates pocket gardens and open balconies
“Rejecting the obvious distinctions between walls & opening, lines & planes, two & three dimensions, transparency & opaqueness, this building is characterized by a distinctive type of abstractness”
STEEL TUBES
16 lattice like steel tubes, composed of thick walled steel pipes, varying 140mm to 150mm in diameter. Serve to structurally support the building Larger tubes resist lateral forces Smaller tubes resist vertical gravity loads House utility and technological sevices
FLOOR SLAB
Honeycomb like network of steel stections Light weight concrete infill Allows the plate to span in between irregularly spaced vertical supports without beams
• Facilitates Cross-Ventilation • Ends monotony on the façade • Open spaces and pockets bring in natural daylight which encourages betterment of health and wellbeing.
EXTERIOR
Light steel wall using C-sections used as non load bearing infill walls Resist wind loads acting on the facade and also support their own weight as well as that of the cladding material

[v] house 2015
A private residence for a businessman, believer of Vastu Shastra, a traditional Hindu system of architecture, which literally translates to “science of architecture, V- House, is informed by this science to evolve a retreat from busy urban life. The house it self is organized as two varied experiences and relationships with nature at two different levels At ground it is the relationship with earth and darkness while the levels above are about sky and shadows. My involvement in this project was during my Architectural Internship at the Madras Office for Architects and Designers (MOAD), Chennai under the guidance of Ar.Mahesh Radhakrishnan. I contributed towards the working drawings, model making and presentations for the project.
S I T E & VA S T U
The grids of Vastu are a super imposition of the site and true north resulting in a Non- Cartesian geometry. This helps in zoning of primary functions in true north and the rest with respect to site resulting in a juxtaposition of volumes and masses

t-hub
phase 1 2015
T-HUB is one of the largest incubation centers in India, today. It has been designed in accordance with the design requirements of the leading offices in the world. It is one of the few energy compliant office buildings in India. A self sustaining and livable office environment to suit the needs of the young and upcoming professionals.
SITE & THE BUILDING SUN PATH
We designed the elevation as a combination of a very industrial as well institutional looking building, in terms of the look as well as the materials used. The façade is a combination of • alternate glass • exposed brick • green wall grids. The envelope of the building is designed for maximum environment efficiency, even enabling the possibility of cross ventilation through the green walls and the glasses with sliding window panels. This is particularly needed in a city like Hyederabad which experiences hot and dry to almost semi-arid type of climate. The bricks are hollow with insulation material to cut heat gain and the green wall provides respite from the dry heat.
WIND PATH
The 70,000 sq.ft area building is located within close proximity to the existing IIIT campus in the financial heart of the city of Hyderabad, India
ZONING & PLANING Being an incubation space for start-ups, a lot of study has gone into the work methodologies of how co-working set ups work. Their basic requirements, furniture typology,, circulation and re-creation areas.
LEED specs have been taken into consideration while designing the interiors as well. Mainly in terms of Low VOC, recyclable and natural organic material LEED Certified Fixtures for Indoor & use of task oriented lights Automated interior shades & operable windows High-performance glazing with window film Radiant cooling ceiling panels Anti-skid Linoleum flooring for toilets & Low flow faucets, showers & cisterns. (Recycled water for cisterns)

student’s cafe 2016
Design of a canteen block for an engineering college in Vizag. The client was open to new ideas for the design of the building, that stood apart from rest of the building blocks in the campus. Basic zoning was conceived based on Vastu, keeping in mind the climatic conditions of the location. Steel and glass play a vital role as an element in the facade of the building as well as to provide structural support to the large roof expanse.
CONCEPT
The facade, that comes in 3 layers: 1.The curtain wall made of double glazed units is the primary outer skin 2. The mesh planes, allow large sliding door to be opened up to allow the prevailant sea breeze to flow into the building and cool it naturally 3. The circular steel columns act as the main structural element to support the large span roof above. The orange container adds a pop of color to the otherwise mundane monochromatic facade.
The idea was to create a micro-climate within: • Uninterrupted connectivity to the existing campus through green spaces • Nodal points for social interaction • Bring the outside IN - vertical gardens, green pockets • environment conscious material choices: - Double glazed window units - Large sliding doors increase natural daylight, ventilation - Reflective paint with low VOC - Light colored rooftop using materials like spray polyurethene foam: - Galvanized steel, enamel paint on frames. LEED rated recycled steel
SITE PLAN
GROUND FLOOR
MEZZANINE FLOOR
The entrance opens up to a large atrium space with a grand staircase that leads to the mezzanine floor. The atrium acts as a congregational space for the students which also doubles up as an eating space. Every space within the building has been utilized to maximize user interaction. The mezzanine floor with the cut outs as per vastu, give an impression of grandeur.

The design of the new office of DBS Bank in Hyderabad will be a source of inspiration and enthusiasm for the young IT professionals in India. The design developed by us is brought forward in the concept of Edgy, Bold and Industrial. The interiors of the space are designed specifically to facilitate a smooth switch into the scrum methodology of working in the IT sector. The space planning and the material selections are made in order to make sure the design is in accordance with green design principles
