Acknowledgments Thesis is by no means a, ‘solo ride’. Getting through my thesis required more than academic support, and I have many people to thank, for listening to and, at times, having to tolerate me over the past four months. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my gratitude for everyone who helped me along in this journey and kept me motivated. Over the years, I have had the privilege of interacting with many great teachers – each of whom have shaped and helped me grow, in their own ways. I would like to start by thanking my thesis guides - Rajeev Agarwal and Suneet Mohindru. They took out innumerous hours to discuss my project at every stage, and through their rigorous discussions kept me on my toes all along. They forced me to think beyond the obvious and helped me see things from a different perspective. I would also like to thank my thesis coordinator - Aruna Ramani Grover, who was a constant source of inspiration and always motivated us to push our boundaries. A constant source of my motivation were my friends, who were always there to lift up my mood. I would like to thank Parul Nayar, Shraddha Malhotra and Kartik Sharma, who were my cheerleaders throughout and a constant source of happiness. I would also like to thank Paraz Sonowal and Vignesh S Pillai, for staying up with me on numerous nights and coming on-line to discuss my work whenever I needed. सारांश वास्तुकला, दोनों नए और पुराने, शहर के क्षितिज को परिभाषित करते हैं और किसी स्थान की हमारी कथित स्मृति पर स्थायी प्रभाव डालते हैं। और जबकि ऐतिहासिक वास्तुकला का अपना आकर्षण है, यह कोई रहस्य नहीं है कि, अपने सर्वोत्तम, आधुनिक वास्तुकला में प्रेरक होने की क्षमता है। थीसिस परियोजना का उद्देश्य एक संग्रहालय के लिए एक समकालीन विस्तार बनाना है जिसका महान ऐतिहासिक महत्व है। ऐतिहासिक इमारतों के समूह के बीच एक इमारत को डिजाइन करने की समस्या एक जटिल वास्तुशिल्प डिजाइन प्रक्रिया है। टाइपोलॉजी एक संग्रहालय होने पर यह समस्या और जटिल हो जाती है। इसमें विशेष विनिर्देश हैं, विशाल आकार है, और समुदाय और देश के लिए बहुत महत्व रखता है। ऐसे मामले में विरोधाभास निम्नलिखित प्रश्न में तैयार किया जा सकता है, “हम ऐतिहासिक संदर्भ में संग्रहालय जैसी महत्वपूर्ण इमारत को उसके महत्व का सम्मान करते हुए और साथ ही साथ इस ऐतिहासिक स्थान की गिरावट से बचने के लिए कैसे डिजाइन कर सकते हैं?” बहुत सुरक्षित खेलने और मौजूदा इमारत को पूरी तरह से छायांकित करने के बीच संतुलन खोजना बहुत महत्वपूर्ण है। थीसिस विभिन्न पुनरावृत्तियों और डिजाइनों के माध्यम से एक उपयुक्त प्रतिक्रिया की जांच करती है। थीसिस सांस्कृतिक स्थानों के महत्व की भी पड़ताल करती है। सांस्कृतिक और सामाजिक रूप से एक शहर को आकार देने में सांस्कृतिक स्थान महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाते हैं। ये बड़े सामुदायिक स्थान उन लोगों के लिए आधार बन जाते हैं जो एक साथ आने, जश्न मनाने, संवाद करने और जगह का जश्न मनाने के लिए इस क्षेत्र में रहते हैं और आते हैं। ये स्थान इतिहास, संस्कृति, परंपराओं के साथ-साथ सांस्कृतिक पुनरोद्धार और पूरे स्थान के पुनर्विकास का समर्थन करने वाले केंद्र को गले लगाने के अवसर प्रदान करते हैं। सांस्कृतिक रिक्त स्थान और आम जनता के बीच बढ़ते डिस्कनेक्ट को स्वीकार करते हुए, परियोजना एक स्थानिक विन्यास का प्रस्ताव करती है जो कई कार्यों को एक साथ लाती है, बदले में लोगों को जीवन के विभिन्न स्तरों से एक स्थान में लाती है। यह विस्तार को इस तरह से डिजाइन करने का प्रस्ताव करता है ताकि यह सिर्फ एक ‘प्रदर्शनी स्थान’ से अधिक बन सके और नियमित आधार पर सक्रिय हो। यह साइट भायखला में स्थित है जो काला घोड़ा के बाद मुंबई में नया और आने वाला कला जिला है। डिजाइन के पास शहर के लिए एक सांस्कृतिक स्थान बनने का अवसर है। नया भवन मौजूदा संग्रहालय के विस्तार से कहीं अधिक है। जिस तरह १८७२ की इमारत मुंबई के औपनिवेशिक अतीत की एक स्थापत्य अभिव्यक्ति को दर्शाती है, उसी तरह नई इमारत समकालीन संग्रहालय डिजाइन में एक मानक स्थापित करेगी और आधुनिक मुंबई के स्थलों में से एक बन जाएगी। xii | City Museum Extension | Byculla, Mumbai
Synopsis Architecture, both new and old, defines city skylines and has a lasting impact on our perceived memory of a place. And while historic architecture has its own charm, it’s no secret that, at its best, modern architecture has the ability to be inspiring. The thesis project aims to create a contemporary extension to a museum that has great historic importance. The problem of designing a building among a group of historical buildings is a complex architectural design process. This issue gets further complicated when the typlogy is a museum. It has special specifications, huge size, and holds great importance for the community and country. The paradox in such a case can be formulated in the following question, ‘‘How can we design an important building such as a museum in a historical context while respecting its importance and at the same time avoiding the deterioration of this historical place?” It is very important to find the balance between playing too safe and completely over shadowing the existing building. The thesis investigates an appropriate response through various iterations and designs. The thesis also explores the importance of cultural spaces. Cultural spaces play a significant role in the shaping of a city both culturally & socially. These larger community spaces become the foundation to those living and visiting the area to come together, celebrate, communicate feel the essence and celebrate the place. These spaces offer opportunities to embrace the history, culture, traditions, as well as a hub supporting cultural revitalization & regrowth of the whole place. Recognizing the growing disconnect between cultural spaces and the general public, the project proposes a spatial configuration that brings multiple functions together, in turn bringing people from different strata’s of life into one space. It proposes to design the extension in such a way so that it can become more than just an ‘exhibition space’ and is active on a regular basis. The site sits in Byculla which is the new up and coming arts district in Mumbai after Kala Ghoda. The design has an opportunity to become a cultural space for the city. The new building is more than an extension to the existing Museum. Just as the 1872 building captures an architectural expression of the colonial past of Mumbai, the new building will set a standard in contemporary museum design and become one of the landmarks of modern Mumbai.
