Krittika has trained in vocal Hindustani (Indian) classical music since the age of four. She trained according to the Kirana gharana (Kirana discipline) which imparts training to ensure that individual notes are given equal importance in order to develop and expand the beauty of the traditional melodies. She is adept in 50 raagas, including taranas and can accompany herself on traditional Indian musical instruments like the harmonium (manual keyboard) and the taanpura (string instrument). She continued her practice in vocal Indian classical music right through her residential schooling years (1996-2003). During this period she learnt and sang religious chants and Sanskrit shlokas (chants). Later, at college, she was the lead singer of ‘Rear View Mirror’ – a college band – and performed with this group at clubs and private events. She is adept at performing various genres like blues, electronica, soul and slow rock, while conserving her grounding in Hindustani classical music. Krittika completed a 5 year course in a leading School of Art, Design and Technology at Bangalore and has a specialization in textile design. During this period, she worked with rural textile artisans as well as top Indian designers, Abraham and Thakore. She has a holistic approach to Art and Design and her design sensibility is greatly influenced by her penchant for reading, writing, art, music and the use of colour. Recently, she recorded and produced her demo album, ‘Bottom Of The Ocean’ in Mumbai and Chennai. She has also performed an acoustic set of covers of Dusty Springfield, Norah Jones, Joss Stone, Natalie Mechant, Fleetwood Mac and Shelby Lynne. She moved to Mumbai to gain experience in studio work, live as well as commercial music. She has composed and executed commercial projects in ad jingles and voice overs. She writes her own lyrics and is presently collaborating with some of Mumbai’s top musicians, working towards her maiden album. Krittika’s ultimate aim is to create and produce her own songs. To get there, she plans to learn the piano, continue learning Hindustani classical music and collaborate with an array of individual artists of both, Indian and Western sensibilities. www.myspace.com/krittikasharma www.revebnation.com/krittikasharma
