Program & Scholarship Campaign
Dear Friends, Mrs. Joan Kroc’s vision was to provide world-class programs to children, adults and seniors in our service area regardless of their financial circumstance. Keeping Mrs. Kroc’s vision alive is something we strive for at The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center, a 12.4-acre family support, education, recreation, and cultural arts center made possible by a generous gift from the late philanthropist. Since 2002, thousands of community members have attended programs at The Salvation Army Kroc Center that Do the Most Good in their lives physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually with the support of our scholarship program. This is accomplished through our 10th Annual HEROES Program and Scholarship Campaign, a fundraising effort that provides financial assistance to program participants of all ages. We aim to raise $105,000 this year to continue to extend scholarships to more than 2,000 community members so they, too, have access to life-changing opportunities at the Kroc Center. All funds raised during last year’s campaign were used to provide those in need participate in Kroc Center programs, including camp, dance, music, junior theatre, karate, swimming, ice skating, hockey, and memberships. Thanks to your generosity, 900 weeks of day camp were thoroughly enjoyed by 150 children, 205 children learned to swim, and 1,500 food boxes were given to hungry families. As we prepare for this exciting eight-week campaign (April 6 - June 1), I would like to invite you to participate as a donor or volunteer campaigner. Whether this is your first time hearing about the campaign, or you’re a campaign veteran, we need your help as we combine the power of passion, relationships and volunteerism to transform the lives of people within our community. Will you join us in continuing to help our neighbors in need? Yours in making a difference, Major Rick Peacock The Salvation Army Kroc Center Executive Director

Grateful scholarship recipients share how their lives have been impacted Mayrah Benavides is mother to three daughters - Tatyanna (10), Eva (8) and Savannah (5). Daily they come to the Kroc Center as a family and have participated in every program imaginable. Their involvement, however, wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the community and the Heroes Program & Scholarship Campaign. The Heroes Program & Scholarship Campaign is an annual fundraiser, where the Kroc Center calls on the greater community to donate. All proceeds go toward scholarships, which are given to local community members in need. Mayrah and her girls became scholarship recipients four years ago. Their lives were instantly enhanced. “My kids have pretty much tried everything. They have been in ice-skating, swimming,
theatre, gymnastics, ballet, soccer and basketball,” Mayrah smiled. For many families the cost of living in San Diego is too much to also have the means for extra curricular activities. “It was the financial support we needed,” Mayrah explained. “If I didn't have the Kroc Center, my kids wouldn't be able to be involved in programs like this because I can’t afford it on my own.” The benefits for scholarship recipients are life changing. Oldest daughter, Tatyanna, has found her passion in Kroc Junior Theatre. “My favorite program at the Kroc Center would have to be theatre because you get to express yourself,” she shared. Tatyanna has learned how to cooperate, share and sing in harmony rehearsing at Kroc Junior Theatre and this year her younger sister, Eva, will join her in the program. “My favorite thing about performing is that when you do it you get to see your friends and family in the audience smiling at you and it makes you feel good,” Tatyanna explained. After touring San Diego, Joan Kroc, wife of McDonald’s owner Ray Kroc, recognized a community that was in desperate need of a safe gathering place with facilities and trained professionals to nurture children’s social skills, arts appreciation and athletic potential. Mrs. Kroc donated $87 million to The Salvation Army to build the first Kroc Center in San Diego. She was so pleased with what was accomplished here that she left $1.6 billion to The Salvation Army to build centers like this across the country. Today, there are 26 Kroc Centers nationwide.
THE SALVATION ARMY KROC CENTER’S PURPOSE In keeping with the mission and holistic approach of The Salvation Army, The Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center provides opportunities that facilitate positive, life-changing experiences through: art, athletics, personal development, spiritual discovery and community service. The Salvation Army Kroc Center’s facilities, programs and services bridge the gap between potential and opportunity for children and adults, strengthen individuals and families, and enrich the lives of seniors.

THE FUTURE: KROC SAN DIEGO We are proud to be a part of San Diego for over 15 years. As we grow and learn, always adaptable, we continue to transform the community for the good. The proposed expansion of the San Diego Kroc Center, or Kroc 2, will feature an elevated sports deck, including arena soccer, and an expanded wellness center. There will be an additional 17,311 square feet of facility and 132 additional parking spaces, for a total of 511 spaces. With funding and corporate approval, we hope construction can begin in 2019. The preliminary plans have been developed by Kenneth D. Smith Architect & Associates. This proposed plan was developed with the help of our Kroc Center Advisory Council and The Salvation Army’s Metropolitan Advisory Board Property Committee. In addition to these established community groups, we are open and available to the interests and ideas of our neighbors.

JOAN KROC:
THE HEART OF THE KROC CENTERS
In 1998, Mrs. Joan Kroc, widow of McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc, donated $90 million to The Salvation Army to build a comprehensive community center in San Diego. When Mrs. Kroc passed away in 2003, she left $1.5 billion to The Salvation Army. At the time, this was the largest single gift given to any one charity. The money was designated to build a series of Kroc Centers nationwide patterned after the San Diego center. Today there are 26 across the country and Puerto Rico.
