I M PA C T R E P O R T
THANK YOU The COVID-19 pandemic has thrust The Salvation Army into new territory, responding to a crisis that affects us all while expanding our existing services to meet increased needs in the communities we serve. In late February we started to see interruptions in the food supply chain leaving many grocery store shelves bare in populated cities across the country. To complicate matters, there were also many seniors and highrisk individuals who were quarantined or self-isolating who needed a contact free way to get food, as well as low-income children who were suddenly out of school requiring their families to come up with one more meal each day. On top of this was a huge influx of people who were finding themselves suddenly unemployed or under-employed and didn’t know how they would continue to feed their families. Thanks to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, we were not only able to serve people in all of these situations, but we were able to build new partnerships in communities across the territory to help supplement your incredible generosity. We’ve put together a report to say thank you and to show you the incredible impact made through your generosity. Thank you!

GRANT FUNDING REPORT
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints’ COVID-19 grant for $1.5 million dollars has made an impact across the country. The majority of the funds were distributed among nine divisions in The Salvation Army’s USA Western Territory, serving twelve states. $499,998 was split evenly among the three other territories (Central, South and East). In the Western Territory, each division set up drive-through food box events where they provided a contact-free service powered by volunteers and supported by the LDS Church and other community partners. Each family also received a $20 gift card with each box so they could purchase perishables and culturally appropriate ingredients. Your generous donation provided 24,500 food boxes to needy families across this region, who have felt the negative financial impact of COVID-19 the worst. In the Eastern Territory, the funds are being spent on feeding in Lowell, Massachusetts. In the Central Territory the funds will provide food boxes to families in Pekin and Peoria, Illinois. In the Southern Territory, food boxes will be given to families in need in both Louisville, Kentucky and the other in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

WHAT’S IN A F OOD B OX?
Each division was provided enough LDS funding to provide each family with a standard food box valued at approximately $30 and $20 gift card that allowed for cultural diversity and the purchase of fresh product including milk, bread, produce and meat. Each food box provides approximately 20 meals which means the LDS Church contribution provided 490,000 meals to families in the Western Territory alone! Here’s an example of the standard 16 items that fit easily into a 17”x13”x10” Salvation Army branded food box. In most communities, new and existing partnerships were leveraged to help supplement and add to what was given out at each event.

W O R D S O F G R AT I T U D E . . . “THERE WAS GREAT ENERGY at this event. LDS and TSA volunteers and staff had joy and were dancing as they served. At one point I saw a mother and daughter drive through, receive their food box and gift card. Then they held up a handwritten sign made in marker that said, “Thank You” with a smiley face. This warmed my heart. Recipients said, “thank you” and “God bless you”. They knew that we were there because of our faith and to meet human needs in our community. That’s a very powerful thing and speaks beyond words.”
A SPECIAL THANK YOU to Elder Bruce Ghent, who is our local lead for volunteers. Elder Ghent arranged 50 LDS missionaries from the Arcadia Area Mission to come Monday through Friday the week of May 4th to our Bell Warehouse and construct 4,500 food boxes and help fill the first 1,000. He arranged 30 LDS missionaries from three different wards to come to our Bell Warehouse on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday the week of May 11th to fill an average of 700 boxes each day. He also arranged 60 volunteers from 4 local LDS churches to help us at our event on May 14th, 2020. Elder Ghent has been a very communicative and supportive partner. THE SALVATION ARMY CALIFORNIA SOUTH DIVISION is grateful for the partnership and trust of the LDS Church to do good for those who need it most. W O R D S O F G R AT I T U D E . . . WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THE SALVATION ARMY is they are willing to work with whoever is willing to partner with them. That is what Christianity is about, being able to take the bull by the horns and say, ‘let’s do this, who will help? This pandemic has hit so many people and I feel blessed that I have fought for the country and have both my arms and my legs, which many veterans cannot say the same, so I want to continue to give back since God has given me so much. They feel like they are the ones receiving but honestly, it’s us. What I like to do is make it easier on them by making them laugh, making them smile, by letting them feel the love of Christ. People think you cannot change the world, but this, this is changing the world, one box at a time in the back of a truck. Changing the world is one act at a time which has a ripple effect to other people. Ripple effects change the world.
AN LDS VOLUNTEER SHARED “how cool it was doing something so great in the name of Christ, it’s great working with The Salvation Army, I hope you all ask us to help with other things throughout the year.” Honda volunteers spoke of “how grateful they were to be a part of such a meaningful event” and blown away by the gratitude of those receiving food, as receipts cried, wave and shared heartfelt thanks. —MAJOR KYLE TRIMMER A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO ELDER BRUCE GHENT, who is our local lead for volunteers. The words of thanks we have fielded and the gratitude people expressed to us, we pass along to you. W O R D S O F G R AT I T U D E . . . WE’RE SO THANKFUL for the opportunity to partner with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints which has allowed The Salvation Army to serve more people in our community. As unemployment continues to increase in the State of Oregon the demand for food continues to increase. With the support of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints we have been able to meet the growing demand for food across the Portland Metro area. GRESHAM “Right now, across the Portland Metro area many are worried about where their next meal will come from. To help meet the growing need The Salvation Army is proud to partner with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,” said Major Bob Lloyd, The Salvation Army Portland Metro Coordinator.

PORTLAND Many people we are serving for the first time because they have been financially impacted by COVID-19. One man shared that he is on a fixed income and with this food box he is able to supplement his weekly meals. With food costs increasing at grocery stores it’s becoming more difficult to purchase enough food for him and his wife each week.

Oregonians were also extremely pleased to receive a gift card which allows them to buy foods that meet dietary restriction and families with children who have allergies. It is a real challenge for parents who have children with allergies.

WE ARE DEEPLY GRATEFUL for the partnership on this project! Representatives from the LDS Church went the extra mile to coordinate a distribution point at North Las Vegas City Hall, at the very last minute when our original plans fell apart. It made all the difference in our ability to serve the community together on the day, and has already sparked a strong collaboration for the future! —LT. COLONEL KELLY PONTSLER, DIVISIONAL COMMANDER

I have friends who desperately need a helping hand who were afraid to come out and ask for a food box. I’m going to go back and get them and bring them here. This was so easy and you made me feel so welcome. –Food box recipient

The LDS grant was awarded to Lowell, Massachusetts, where it was used to support a critical feeding operation. The region is a ‘COVID hotspot’ where confirmed cases, job loss, and food insecurities require emergency assistance. In partnership with the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency and the National Guard, this emergency operation continues to supply 1,500 food boxes per week at the request of the Governor’s Office. Hundreds of food boxes are also being provided to home-bound veterans, seniors, low income families, and other critical need populations throughout the region. To date, food boxes distributed from the Lowell operation total 9,250.
