Coopération Une nouvelle foire de Bâle s’est achevée. Toujours aussi excitante, tourbillonnante de nouveautés et de projets. 2011 restera, je pense, un grand cru. Il faut dire que les manufactures affûtaient leurs armes depuis longtemps : avant-projets mis en route

premiers dessins de notre future boutique Romain Jerome qui ouvrira ses portes, en mai, au sein de l’hôtel Byblos à Saint Tropez. Un beau défi que je mène avec plaisir avec Manuel Emch (CEO de Romain Jerome) pour la première boutique au monde de cette jeune marque.

Cela marque un grand tournant dans l’horlogerie et pour réussir leurs paris, les marques nous demandent de plus en plus d’implication dans leurs projets (tant mieux) et de plus en plus d’espace dans les boutiques. A la relecture de mes précédents éditos, vous vous apercevrez que nous avons compris et pris ce virage très tôt chez Kronometry 1999 : réduction du nombre de marques, embellissement des présentoirs, espaces dédiés à chaque marque, expositions et évènements. Tous ces points abordés il y a déjà deux ans nous ont rapprochés encore plus des manufactures. A la découverte du Volume 5 qui vous attend en boutique, vous pourrez constater à quel point nous sommes proches des manufactures, ces berceaux de l’horlogerie pour la plupart centenaires qui nous ont ouvert grand leurs portes. Peu de personnes peuvent aujourd’hui revendiquer une telle liberté d’action dans ces lieux « fermés ». Nous en faisons partie et nous le démontrons à travers ce livre dont je suis très fier. Quatre ans d’attente et une année de travail pour ces 300 pages de pure passion… Vous découvrirez à travers ce numéro un échantillon de la foire de Bâle mais aussi les

Cooperation The latest show in Basel has come to an end. As exciting as ever, brimming with new ideas and projects. 2011 will, I think, be a great vintage. It must be said that the watchmakers have been sharpening their knives for quite some time : draft-projects launched well ahead of time,products tested with retailers (a first !), finely-tuned marketing campaigns etc... Nothing has been left to chance so that new models introduced this year would quickly find their target ! One no longer presents a watch, but a style, a universe, a concept... The timepiece and its entire environment.

This marks a major turning-point in watchmaking, and to ensure that these challenges will be won, the Manufactures are asking us for more and more involvement in their projects (so much the better), and more and more space in the boutiques. If you take a glance at my previous editorials, you will notice that we at Kronometry 1999 understood and took this direction very early on : reducing the number of brands, embellishing displays, dedicating special areas to each brand, holding exhibitions and special events. All these points already raised two years ago have brought us closer to the watchmakers. While discovering Volume 5 which awaits you in the boutiques, you will see just how close we are to the Manufactures, these cradles of the watchmaking art, most of them a century old, which have opened their doors to us. Few people today can claim such freedom of movement in these «closed circles». We are part of them, and demonstrate the fact throughout this book of which I am very proud. Four years of waiting and a full year’s work to produce these 300 pages of undiluted passion... In this issue, you will discover a sampling from the Basel trade-fair, but also the first sketches of our future Romain Jerome boutique which will open its doors in May, at the Byblos Hotel in Saint-Tropez. A fine challenge that I have taken up with pleasure, alongside Manuel Emch (CEO of Romain Jerome) for the world’s first boutique dedicated to this young brand. Finally, I would like to take advantage of this issue to pay tribute to a great personality in the world of watchmaking, who passed away a short time ago.

In fact, over the past year, a lot of work has been accomplished, as the brand is now available in all of our boutiques : thanks to this close collaboration, its success has already exceeded our expectations. We have therefore decided to open the word’s first Romain Jerome boutique at the end of May. Situated in the Byblos Hotel in Saint Tropez, it will be decorated in the lunar style so dear to the brand. A preview, new offerings and special editions will be on the agenda of this important first, destined for a rosy future.

Rolf W. Schnyder, propriétaire et CEO d’Ulysse Nardin, nous a quittés le 14 avril dernier. Je tenais à rendre hommage à ce grand visionnaire qui, depuis 1983, a œuvré sans relâche pour faire évoluer l’horlogerie et faire d’Ulysse Nardin la grande manufacture mondialement connue qu’elle est aujourd’hui. Ulysse Nardin occupe une grande place chez Kronometry 1999. Nos deux sociétés partagent les mêmes valeurs et travaillent en étroite collaboration depuis plusieurs années avec succès. Tout ceci a été rendu possible grâce à la confiance que Rolf W. Schnyder a su nous accorder. Comme il a su, au fil du temps, s’entourer d’une équipe dirigeante de qualité. Ulysse Nardin has a very important place within Kronometry 1999. Our two companies share the same values and have worked in close collaboration for several years with great success. All of which was made possible thanks to the trust that Rolf W. Schnyder placed in us. And because he succeeded, over the years, in setting up a managerial team of quality. Masterpiece MP-02 Key of Time

A l’occasion du salon de Bâle 2011, Hublot dévoile le deuxième volet de sa nouvelle collection Masterpiece entièrement dédiée aux montres à complications et aux mouvements hors du commun. Editée en série limitée à 50 exemplaires, la MP-02 Key of Time est le premier garde-temps qui indique « votre » temps selon « votre » choix. Son boîtier en titane avec traitement DLC noir renferme un mécanisme qui, grâce à une couronne à trois positions, permet de « moduler » la vitesse à laquelle s’écoulent les heures et les minutes en fonction de vos désirs. Pour ceux qui souhaitent savourer chaque seconde du temps qui passe, la position 1 permet de ralentir la vitesse des aiguilles, divisant ainsi le temps par quatre. Une heure conventionnelle s’affiche alors comme un quart d’heure selon l’heure donnée par la MP-02 Key of Time. En position 2, la vitesse des aiguilles est normale et le temps reste « standard », vous permettant ainsi d’ « être » à l’heure. Enfin, si vous désirez faire passer le temps plus vite, placez la MP-02 sur la position 3. Ainsi la vitesse des aiguilles s’accélère, ce qui permet de multiplier le temps par quatre, un quart d’heure conventionnel s’affiche alors comme une heure selon l’indication donnée par la MP-02 Key of Time. Pour éviter toute confusion, trois indicateurs différents positionnés en étoile sur le cadran noir multi-pièces avec décalques verts indiquent chacun la vitesse du temps en court. Ce mécanisme complexe peut rester en position 1 ou 3 pendant une durée indéterminée et d’un seul geste, revenir à la position 2, pour voir les aiguilles se replacer d’elles-mêmes et ainsi indiquer l’heure conventionnelle. Cette performance est rendue possible grâce à une véritable « mémoire mécanique » intégrée dans le mouvement. Enfin, la MP-02 Key of Time est dotée d’une cage de tourbillon de type vertical et volant qui a la particularité d’indiquer les secondes sur sa tranche. Remontage manuel. Réserve de marche de 100 h. On the occasion of Baselworld 2011, Hublot unveiled the second offering in its new Masterpiece collection entirely dedicated to watches with complications and extraordinary movements. In a limited edition of 50 pieces, the MP-02 Key of Time is the first timepiece to tell «your» time the way you want it. Its titanium case with black DLC coating houses a mechanism which, thanks to a crown with three positions, can «modulate» the speed at which the hours and minutes pass exactly as you wish. For those who want to savour every second of passing time, Position 1 will slow the speed of the watch hands, thus dividing time by four : one conventional hour is then displayed as a quarter of an hour depending on the time given by the MP-02 Key of Time. In Position 2, the speed of the watch hands is normal and time remains «standard», allowing you to «be» on time. Finally, if you want time to pass more quickly, place the MP-02 on Position 3 : this accelerates the speed of the watch hands, multiplying time by four, with a conventional quarter of an hour then represented as an hour as per the indication given by the MP-02 Key of Time. To avoid confusion, three different indicators in a star arrangement on the black multi-part dial with green transfers each indicate the current speed of time. This complex mechanism can remain in Position 1 or 3 indefinitely or simply be switched to Position 2 for the hands to re-adjust and indicate conventional time. This performance is possible thanks to a genuine «mechanical memory» built into the movement. Finally, the MP-02 Key of Time features a vertical flying tourbillon cage with a special feature indicating the seconds around the edge. Manual winding. 100-hour power reserve. Le Dix Apporter à un téléphone une « plus-value humaine ». Voici l’idée de départ du rêve un peu fou de cette jeune entreprise aux grandes ambitions. Mais attention, ne nous trompons pas ! Il ne s’agit pas d’apposer une montre ou un logo à un téléphone, il s’agit tout simplement de mécaniser un téléphone, de greffer un téléphone dans un garde-temps hors normes. Le Dix est donc avant tout « un gros » garde-temps doté d’un mouvement mécanique à Tourbillon composé de 608 pièces qui s’étalent en longueur sous la glace saphir. Indication des heures et des minutes mais surtout, remontage automatique sans masse oscillante. En effet, le mouvement est remonté automatiquement à chaque ouverture du clapet du téléphone grâce à un mécanisme breveté qui aura fait passer quelques nuit blanches à ses concepteurs. Le tout est protégé par un boîtier entièrement en titane forgé. Rien n’a donc été négligé pour cet objet exceptionnel. Nous ne vous parlerons pas des fonctions du téléphone, ce n’est pas le sujet. Le Dix « Human added value » for your phone That was the original idea behind the rather far-flung dream of this young company with high ambitions. But beware, let’s not deceive ourselves ! It’s not about adding a watch or a logo to a phone : the idea was simply to create a mechanical telephone, to graft a phone onto an outsize timepiece. Le Dix is therefore and above all a « big » timepiece with a mechanical tourbillon movement consisting of 608 pieces spread out lengthwise beneath the sapphire crystal. Indication of the hours and minutes, but more importantly, automatic winding without an oscillating weight. In fact, the movement is rewound automatically each time the phone is flipped open by means of a patented mechanism that cost its designers a few sleepless nights. The legendary Royal Oak Offshore reaffirms its supremacy in the world of large watches by unveiling three new sporty chronographs blending boldness and high performance. Without impairing the identity of this collection whose distinguishing codes are still in place, Audemars Piguet revisits its flagship model both in terms of its case, design and the choice of materials. Reasserting its outsize dimension, the 44-mm case plays the ace of dual materials for each version. Selected for its hardness and resistance, the ceramic used for the bezel is thus combined with steel, rose gold or forged carbon, depending on the model. The construction of the right side of these timepieces has been redesigned to become even more complex. Thus, the push-piece guards no longer form part of the case but are instead two distinct parts connected by four visible screws, while the push-pieces themselves are composed of a base and cap that serves as a contact surface. Designed in an extremely sober style with contrasting colours to enhance readability, the dial with its «Mega Tapisserie» motif displays the hours and minute in the centre, the small second at 12 o’clock, the 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock and the 30-minute counter at 9 o’clock, while the date is indicated in an aperture at 3 o’clock. Harry Winston dévoile sa 11ème interprétation, Opus Eleven, un garde-temps explosif qui s’amuse avec le temps et invente une façon ludique d’exprimer sa course. La Maison a choisi de confier la création de cette pièce aussi technique qu’esthétique à Denis Giguet, fondateur de sa propre marque, MCT, une marque avant-gardiste, créative à la pointe de l’innovation horlogère… De fait, Opus Eleven est un concentré de challenges techniques, un spectacle fascinant qui se joue à heure fixe. Doté d’un mouvement mécanique à remontage manuel, le boîtier en or gris 18k impressionne par son extrême complexité. In fact, Opus Eleven is a concentrate of technical challenges, a fascinating spectacle being played out at a fixed time. With a mechanical handwound movement, the 18-carat grey gold case impresses for its extreme complexity. Its three-dimension architecture consists of three overlapping cylinders which entertain themselves by deconstructing time. Dedicated to displaying the time, the main circle is flanked by two side pavilions. The first offers a digital display of the minutes via two disks (semi-jumping disk for the tens and a running disk for the units), while the one below reveals the beauty of the regular beat of a large titanium balance-wheel. Every 60 minutes, beneath the large sapphire dome, the display of the hours falls victim to anarchy. The latest additions to the Moon Dust-DNA collection, the Black Mood and Steel Mood Chronographs, are fitted with a mechanical self-winding movement housed in a 46-mm steel case - or black PVD steel depending on the model -, bearing the four « claws » characteristic of Romain Jerome design. The case is encircled by a matching bezel in carbon fiber composed of fragments from Apollo 11. In limited editions of 1,969 pieces each, these two chronographs display the hours and minutes in the centre with the small second at 9 o’clock, on a black or lunar grey dial made of mineral material containing Moon Dust and bearing a handengraved representation of the surface of the moon. RM 035 Rafael Nadal Richard Mille développe un nouveau garde-temps dérivé de celui que portait Rafael Nadal en 2010 lorsqu’il a remporté les trois plus grands tournois de tennis que sont Roland Garros, Wimbledon et Flushing Meadows. La RM 035 fait battre en son cœur un mouvement squeletté à remontage manuel qui est le tout premier de la collection Richard Mille à obtenir le certificat Chronofiable. Développé au début des années 80, ce test soumet les montres à des cycles de vieillissement accélérés reproduisant en 21 jours les effets équivalents à 6 mois de portée et prouve ainsi de manière indubitable que le calibre de la RM 035 est capable d’affronter des conditions extrêmes, sans que ses performances s’en trouvent affectées. L’ensemble de ce gardetemps est construit de manière harmonieuse, selon des spécifications extrêmement rigoureuses, comme un châssis et un moteur de Formule 1. Richard Mille has developed a new timepiece derived from the one worn by Rafael Nadal in 2010 when he won the three major tennis tournaments : Roland Garros, Wimbledon and Flushing Meadows. The beating heart of the RM 035 is a handwound skeletonized movement which is the first in the Richard Mille collection to have obtained Chronofiable certification. Developed in the early 80’s, this test subjects watches to accelerated aging cycles reproducing in 21 days the effects equivalent to 6 months of normal wear and thus proving beyond doubt that the caliber of the RM 035 is able to cope with extreme conditions without its performance being affected. The entire timepiece has been built in harmony, conforming to very strict specifications, just like a Formula 1 engine and chassis. The RM 035’s barrel-shaped case 48 mm in diameter is thus made of Alusic, an extremely robust magnesium-aluminium alloy known for its lightness. La manufacture Urwerk bouscule ses habitudes en proposant pour la première fois de son histoire un garde-temps monté sur un bracelet en métal assorti à celui du boîtier. Déclinaison de la célèbre UR-202, cette nouvelle création éditée en série limitée à 50 exemplaires se présente ainsi sous une forme plus radicale et impose un style plus massif grâce à son nouveau design tout métal. Pour rendre cette mutation possible, Urwerk a choisi de s’associer avec la maison Maspoli, acteur de la scène horlogère depuis 1951 dont la spécialité est le bracelet métal. Pas moins de 11 phases de travail ont été nécessaires à la maison Maspoli pour atteindre un résultat à la hauteur des exigences de la manufacture. The Urwerk Manufacture has departed from its beaten path by proposing for the first time in its history a timepiece mounted on a metal bracelet matching that of the case. A variation on the famous UR-202, this new creation produced in a limited edition of 50 pieces is thus presented in a more radical form proposing a more «massive» style with its new all-metal design. To achieve this transformation, Urwerk chose to work in partnership with Maspoli, a player on the watchmaking scene since 1951, whose specialty is, in fact, the metal bracelet. No fewer than 11 phases of work were required for Maspoli to obtain a result meeting Urwerk’s demands. In addition to its bracelet, the UR-202S differs from other members of the 200 collection for its non-standard dial decor. Two different models are available : the UR-202S Steel with a grey gold case and matching metal bracelet, and the UR-202S Black with an AlTiN stainless steel case and matching metal bracelet. The Luminor 1950 Composite 3 Days 47 mm combines the characteristics of this material - lightness, resistance and durability -, with a mechanical handwound movement with 3-day power reserve. In a limited edition of 2,000 pieces, it proposes a 47-mm case made of opaque brown composite with matching bezel and crown protector. The dark brown dial in sandwich form with Arabic numerals and luminescent hands displays the hours and minutes in the centre with the small second at 9 o’clock. Abritée dans un généreux boîtier en or rose 18k et acier DLC de 50 mm de diamètre, la nouvelle interprétation du Tourbillon volant automatique réalisée par Perrelet est une magnifique démonstration de style. Construit en profondeur, le cadran dévoile la cage du tourbillon volant à travers un anneau cylindrique positionné à 6h. L’indication de la petite seconde est donnée par la rotation de sa cage, celle-ci effectuant une rotation complète en 60 secondes. Deux ailettes en fibre de carbone accompagnent le regard jusqu’à 12h où s’affichent les heures et les minutes. Designed to give depth, the dial reveals the flying tourbillon cage in a cylindrical ring positioned at 6 o’clock. The small second indication is given by the rotating cage, which makes a full rotation in 60 seconds. Two wing-shaped zones in carbon fiber direct the eye to the 12 o’clock position where the hours and minutes are displayed. On a background set with black or white diamonds, the Infinity Dragon features bright, complementary colours and is characterized by red or green lines representing the mythical beast which stray well beyond the dial.
