Welcome
TO THE 2O10 GAYMERS CAMDEN CRAWL! We hope you will find this year’s line up of live music, comedy, visual arts, spoken word, interactive games and events the most impressive and enjoyable yet. To help you fully get to grips with the vast scope of this bank holiday weekend extravaganza, we have joined forces with the fantastic team at Kruger to produce this magazine for
you to enjoy during the festival. It features information and features on all of the artists and events taking place at the Crawl and, together with our expanded event guide and mobile site containing full schedules and maps, will help you plan which routes you choose throughout the duration.
It’s our aim to create an engaging, eclectic and enjoyable programme for all interests & tastes which encourages experimentation and discovery. Like previous Crawls, you will get the opportunity to see the hottest up-and-coming live acts alongside some big names and influential legends, but there are a few things you will need to bear in mind in order to get the most of your experience.
already done so, we invite you to take advantage of the amazing 2010 compilation album we have produced featuring a selection of artists appearing this weekend. Your redemption code and full details of how to download for FREE are listed on the event guide.
Your wristband allows unlimited access to all participating venues except the Roundhouse*, but at time queues are inevitable even though we take every practical measure to eradicate them. As there is constant audience turnover within venues, most queues move quite quickly especially during the changeover in between artists. It is advised that you plan ahead and arrive very early for something you’re desperate to see and always have alternatives at the ready. If ever you see more than fifty people waiting outside a small venue, you should move on to another. There is an excellent calibre of artists performing at all venues and part of the fun is in the discovery of something new and unplanned. Our mobile site will also prove itself a great asset if you are technologically inclined. Visit http:// camdencrawl.mobi or text CRAWL to get our free Gaymers Camden Crawl mobile site on your phone. Includes exclusive news & competitions, Twitter, full listings and more. And, if you haven’t
Lastly, a couple of important reminders….. Weekend pass holders will need to return to the ticket exchange area to collect the Sunday event guide anytime after 11 am. Whilst Camden Town is largely safe there is an element of low level street crime that Crawlers should watch out for. Be sensible and take precautions with your self and possessions at all times. The whole Crawl team wishes you a fantastic time and don’t forget to explore the extensive daytime programme and let yourself discover something unexpected.
Xx All of the team at the Crawl * Entry to each of the 4 shows scheduled to take place at The Roundhouse during the weekend will require an advance purchase supplementary ticket in addition to a valid Gaymers Camden Crawl festival wristband. These tickets must be produced upon arrival at the venue for admission and there is no re-entry for these shows once you have entered the venue.

A-E ANDY ROSS PRESENTS
Andy Ross, Food Records head honcho and the man who signed 90s luminaries Blur, Idlewild and, erm, Shampoo, hosts two afternoons of stripped-down performances at the Spread Eagle. Recent years have seen Soko, Mumford & Sons and Noah & the Whale all appear at the legendary indie man’s request.
CANADIAN BLAST
BOOKSLAM PRESENTS
CAMDEN FRINGE A festival in its own right, the Camden Fringe brings a small taste of what it’ll be bringing to NW1 in August to the Crawl for one afternoon only. Expect comedy, variety, magic acts and the quirkiest cabaret that put the emphasis on weird and wonderful. It’s the new old fashioned way.
Spoken word events are for pretentious, stuffy losers who don’t know the meaning of fun. Right? Not where BookSlam are concerned. Having bagged massive names in the past like Nick Hornby and Will Self, and hosted live music from Kate Nash and Speech Debelle, Book Slam is officially making spoken word the coolest gig in town.
CRAWL 2010 FANTASY LEAGUE
FIERCE PANDA SHOWCASE
If you’re torn between soaking up the Crawl atmosphere and watching the footie, then agonize no more. More than just putting the match on the TV, Fantasy League lets you get involved. Pick your dream team and be in the running to win some great prizes. Making their debut at the Crawl, Canadian Blast brings the most exciting new Canuck talent to the festival. This is bona-fide, hot-out-the-beartrap new school aceness. If you caught them at SXSW or Liverpool Soundcity, you know what to expect. If not, you’re in for a treat.
Like many brilliant ideas, the label known as Fierce Panda Records was born in a pub. A multitude of bizarre decisions later, the Panda continues to amble brilliantly onwards and sideways, putting out records by fellow travellers as stout and hearty as The Walkmen, Hatcham Social and The Raveonettes.
Craftacular Spectacular! Hosts of the hottest craft fairs in London, New York and LA, BUST Craftacular urges you to Do-It-Yourself! Crawlers can stitch and screen-print an original tote bag with help from a sewing-machined team of seamstresses and Londonbased T-shirt designer Mr Wingate; add pom-poms and sequins while downing some drinks, listening to DJs and devouring delicious cupcakes… Make your own tote bag or programme holder:
1
Cut two pieces of sturdy cotton fabric; 450mm by 360mm for the tote, or 108mm by 78mm for the programme holder. Place the two pieces of fabric together so that the right sides are facing (the side of the fabric that will be on the outside of the bag is on the inside).
2
Pin in place and then sew straight lines around three sides about 10mm from the edge to join together (leave one short side unsewn).
3
Turn over 1cm of fabric all the way around the top unsewn edge and iron flat. Turn it over again so that you can’t see the frayed edge; iron again.
4
Tuck both the edges of ribbon or tape (two pieces of about 650mm length) into either side of the turned-over edge and pin. Sew all around this edge securing the handles. Turn the bag right-side out.
The Craftacular Lowdown Born in Brooklyn in December 2005, to New York-based women’s pop-culture magazine BUST A craft fair from a new dimensions – mixing the hottest in handmade goods with DJs, drinks, dancing and DIY Landed in LA and London in December 2008 Continues its transatlantic takeover with it’s fourth London shopping shebang on JULY 10th. F-I EMERGING TALENT AWARDS
THE FIX
GRAND THEFT IMPRO
Bringing a bellyful of laughs to the Crawl this year is the renowned national comedy magazine and live comedy promotions company The Fix. They’ll be showcasing the finest, most original comedy talent from the UK and elsewhere. With over 40 years experience between them, the Grand Theft Impro troupe are old hands at just making things up. See them perform acts based on different aspects of the music world. Not only that, they’ll do what Andrew Lloyd Webber probably dreams of doing and end on a completely improvised musical note.
For three years, the Indie Idle competition gave the freshest talent the chance to win a slot at the Crawl. Now re-launched as the Emerging Talent Awards, the contest boasts a host of categories from Best New Band to Best Image, industry judges and public voting.
HIP HOP KAROAKE
HOOCHINOO
ISLAND BOAT + BBQ PARTY
Having existed for five years, Hoochinoo join the Crawl for the first time, bringing with them all kinds of urban goodness. Beatboxers, break dancers, grafitti artists... check. Get down and watch them do things you wish you could do without looking like a total wally.
Few things are funnier than watching someone be super poop at karaoke. Add a hip hop twist and you’re laughing yourself all the way to a hernia. Hip Hop Karaoke recognise this and give daring wannabe rappers the chance to act out their fantasies to the fullest.
After the success of last year’s boat shenanigans, Island Records are back on the water in 2010. Having signed The Drums and Bombay Bicycle Club recently, it’s defintiely worth a look in to see future household names. Expect surprise guests and DJs plus some tasty grub and one hell of a party.
Mega Fun Activity Page Five minutes to kill before the next gig? Why not play these awesomely games. Oh, and then go and check out the badass events that kinf of inspired them. Bingo Lingo Clickity Click... If you thought bingo was all flappy arms and shitty prizes.. you’re right. And wrong. Here’s why:
RINGO: MUSIC BINGO BRING & SHARE BINGO Back with new games and nice tunes; sharp-eared medlydesipherers will walk away with super prizes.
Just like regular bingo, except the numbers are replaced with music intros, and there’s a lot more punning.

Quizes
Think you’re some kind of expert about music, do you? Try our rock hard quiz out for size. 1 point for every correct answer. 1 - Name the odd one out: Gary, Mark, Howard, Jason, Robbie, Daley Thompson. 2 - True or false: Ian Watkins
from Lostprophets charges £4 per person for a kiss on the lips
3 - What’s the name of Camden resident Graham Coxon’s record label?
For better questions and a whole lot more fun, check out the ace music quizzes hosted by the these dudes:
Moshi Moshi Pop Quiz Moshi Moshi’s quiz is a brilliant Crawl tradition. If anyone knows bloody loads about music, it’s the label that brought you Lykki Li, Late Of The Pier and Friednly Fires, so you better bone-up.
Rough Trade Pop Quiz Actually, here’s some people who know just as much music gumph. It’s the people behind probably the coolest record shop in the world, Rough Trade. Guaranteed to be super fun, if answering tough music Qs is your game.
1)Howard is the only one that’s cross-eyed. 2)False. 3) Transcopic
I-P IT CAME FROM JAPAN
It Came From Japan presents the coolest new artists who, well, come from Japan. Over the last five years, they’ve brought dozens of acts to the West, including an annual showcase at The Great Escape, Liverpool Sound City and In The City, and club tours all over Britain and the US.
KARAUKE
Ever fancied singing with a backing (BIG) band of finetuned ukuleles? Well, here’s your chance, with Karauke. They provide the words, music and backing vocals and have everything from The Beatles and Blur, to Van Morrison and the Village People.
LANTERN SOCIETY Husband and wife duo Trevor Moss and Hannah-Lou, the Richard and Judy of London’s folk scene, founded The Lantern Society and its associated ...Radio Hour back in 2007. Since then, they’ve become pivotal figures in the capital and recorded their debut album.
MYSTER GENERAL & FRIENDS Myster General & Friends (aka Brendan Cleaves and Kurt Driver) are transforming the Crawl into a comedy hub, including hilarity in all it’s forms - be it musical, cabaret, stand up, sketch shows or undefinable craziness. Promising award winning comedians and secret special guests, it’s going to be spectacularly silly.
ONETASTE
Founded by producer Dannii Evans and singer Jamie Woon in 2004, OneTaste have been responsible for launching talented so and sos like Polarbear and Scroobius Pip. Created to showcase talent popping its head out of the underground art scenes in London, OneTaste have become one of the UK’s most noted arts collectives.
LOOSE RECORDS SHOWCASE The antidote to all the tinnitusinducing noise you’ll hear over the weekend. Having released records by M Ward, Neko Case, Blanche and the Duke & the King amongst others, expect them to soothe your waning hearing with the finest and gentlest of folk.
LITRO PRESENTS Started to provide commuters with short stories to entertain them on their travels, free mag Litro presents an afternoon of stories and music from the world of the spoken word. Litro Live! gives Crawlers a break from all that noise and an opportunity to let their imaginations run wild.
POEJAZZI Showing that people can not only write poetically, but talk and sing nicely too, PoeJazzi has become known as one of the best poetry and music nights in London. They’ve hosted sets from Scroobius Pip, Lail Arad and Polar Bear and ran nights at the Roundhouse and Southbank Centre.

P-W POSTER ROAST
RED STRIPE BUSKING SESSIONS
Bringing together some of the finest UK gig poster artists, Poster Roast aims to produce an explosion of work all over the walls. A mix of gig posters and live screen printing, it’ll also include live performances from great rock bands both days.
ROCK A HULA If you’ve ever wished Camden was less inner city grit and more Hawaiian paradise, Rock a Hula! will make your dreams come true. Filled with inflatable palm trees, swing dancing and hula hooping, it’s a 1950s beach party combining all the fun of the fifties in one tiki tidal wave.
Don’t let the tuneless, unhigned ones put you off, there’s loads of awesome buskers out here. This Red Stripe stage has nothing to do with out of tune ditties on the underground, and everything to do with ace bands turning up and playing their hearts out. All the artists have to do is out their names down and make sure they’re around when the time comes to play. Ace.
SKIP THEATRE
STITCH LONDON
UNDERBELLY After a successful debut in 2009, Underbelly return with two afternoons of comedy promising a myriad of acts from stage, TV and radio on offer inside The Abbey. In the beer garden there’ll be a bunch of new kids on the block providing more hilarious afternoon shenanigans.
Born at Goldsmiths, the girls behind SKIPtheatre have played at Glastonbury and Offset. They’ve showcased their ropejumping alongside East London cool kids Neil’s Children, and nearly got crushed skipping at a Lightspeed Champion gig. That’s dedication for you.
WHO KILLED BAMBI Get your graffiti knit on as the Stitch London Stitchettes turn you from a mild-mannered non-knitter to a sneaky stitcher. Stitch London have been stomping across London like a woolly Godzilla since 2005 and this year they’re bringing “Submit to the Knit” to Camden Town. Needles at the ready.
Making the short trip from Highgate, the Who Killed Bambi? pub quiz lets you show off your musical knowledge and win some ace prizes. Not satisfied with just providing the serious business of quizzing, they’re also bringing along some special guests to boot.

RED BULL BEDROOM JAM
PRIMROSE CHILL
Over in the serene and salubrious area of Primrose Hill, in amongst lush townhouses and amazing views of the city, lie a series of pubs who all have one thing in common... They’re joint hosts of The Primrose Chill.
Camden Crawl welcomes back the Red Bull Bedroom Jam for a third year, but this time with a twist. For the first time ever, an outdoor live arena housing both a main and DJ stage will be set up in the heart of Camden Town. There’ll also be 2 bars and food stalls to keep everyone fed and watered throughout the course of the day. Running from 12:30 - 7pm in Hawley Crescent, two fantastic line-ups of exciting live talent will appear across the weekend. After The Ordealm We Are The Ocean, Skepta, hometown heroes Man Like Me, Blitz Kids, Dissolved In, Let’s Go To Warcand Kasms all take to the stage on Saturday. Sunday sees Siva, Fate of a Stranger, Flood of the Red The Auteur, Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip, Is Tropical and Rolo Tomassi all perform.
Making its debut this year, the Chill is all about showcasing new acoustic talent. The Primrose Chill differs from the rest of the Crawl in its dedication to bringing together performers from grass roots genres like blues, jazz, alt country and folk. The main ‘Chill’ zone is just a short walk from the centre of Camden to Primrose Hill, but if you’d rather save your valuable energy for later on, there are regular canal boats making the trip from Camden Lock to the most peaceful, tourist-free spot in NW1. Participating venues include The Queens, Princess of Wales, The Lansdowne and The Engineer. The Primrose Chill will run from 2-7pm on Saturday. Oh, and did we mention entry it’s free all afternoon?

A-B ACTION BEAT
Representing a multi-musical, multi-racial, multi-talented young Britain, Akala is a hip hop Voltron. Seeing no contradiction in tearing up dance-floors with a bag full of ‘literate lyrics’, the dude from Kentish Town is as much of a thinker as he is a hyuped up floor-filler.
Sulky lo-fi punk and discordant grunge aesthetics make comparisons with Sonic Youth are unavoidable. But Action Beat are making ears prick up for good reason – their songs are muscular and intense semiimprovised nuggets of no-wave noise, like Nirvana for 2010.
ALAN POWNALL
ALEX METRIC Touring with Adele after just three gigs, sharing a flat with Mumford & Sons and Jay Jay Pistolet and supporting the likes of Laura Marling and Kid Harpoon, Alan Pownall is practically anti-folk royalty. Not bad for someone who hasn’t even released an album yet.
ART VS. SCIENCE Part pop, part French electro, part rock with a spoonful of epic sociological debate (in their name, anyway). A self-released EP in 2009 saw them pick up plays from Kissy Sell Out and XFM’s John Kennedy, who reckons they should be on your clock in 2010.
BABYBIRD Crikey, is it really 14 years since misconstrued love anthem You’re Gorgeous was everybloody-where? Baby Bird is back doing what he does best: creating irresistible melodies with his warm, angelic voice. Stephen Jones is still on top form, and better than ever.
AKALA
2008 was the year Alex Metric helped put the fun back into dance music and two years on, he’s still doing his bit. A creator of brash electro with an indie tinge, Metric’s converting the world of beats and bleeps one track at a time.
AUTOKRATZ Kitsune party-starters autoKratz spent 2009 honing their live sound over a ball-busting 200 show world tour. Expect to find them revved up and ready to go for Camden Crawl 2010. With a live drummer now added to the live set-up, its rhythm overdrive at chez autoKratz.
BEST COAST Coming from LA, Bethany Cosentino might be dismayed by the lack of sun, sea and sand in Camden. Someone take her to the Lock and sit her down to write a woozy garage-rock number about canal boats, please.
He paints. He writes poems. He knocks seven shades of shit out of a guitar. And this year Gaymer’s Camden Crawl is proud to welcome punk-rock master-ofall-trades Billy Childish. Think you’ve got the measure of the man? Well think again…
1
Born in 1959, Billy Childish left school at 16 with no qualifications and spent 12 years on the dole. Despite (or because) of this, he has published over 40 poetry collections, recorded more than 100 full-length albums and produced over 2000 paintings. Just think, he could have done an apprenticeship at KPMG instead.
2
Despite a career spent politely flicking two fingers to the mainstream, Childish was asked to appear on Big Brother. Unsurprisingly he turned it down, but only after putting the decision to an audience vote at a gig.
Nicely subverting the Big Brother process, his fans voted for him never to go in, rather than when to come out.
3
Implausibly, Kylie Minogue was given one of Billy’s poetry collections – Poems to Break the Hearts of Impossible Princesses – by Nick Cave, and from it she lifted the title of her sixth album. However, when Princess Di was killed, the name of the album was changed in Europe to ‘Kylie Minogue’. How mental is that?
5
Billy Childish and Tracey Emin were artistically and romantically entangled in the 80s, having both grown up and attended art colleges in Kent. Emin prominently displayed Childish’s name in her Everyone I Have Ever Slept With 1963–1995 tent-installation that burnt down in 2004.
4
Childish is an unflinching, uncompromising storyteller, having tackled (his own) child abuse, poverty and illiteracy in explicit detail. He was also the co-founder of the Stuckists movement – a group of anticonceptual artists, described variously as ‘geniuses’ and ‘bullies’.
FIVE THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT
Billy Childish
B-C BETTY AND THE WEREWOLVES
These chaps are hree girls and one boy from London who whoop and howl through the night. Don’t call Social Services though, as their sweetly sung melodies collide with glitter struck punk guitars to produce ditties about falling in love with David Cassidy and night buses.
Billy Vincent is not, as it might appear, actually just one person. Billy Barratt and David Vincent (see what they did there?) front this group of self-professed ‘dirty folk’ misfits. Like Mumford & Sons without as much banging on about their hearts.
THE BLACKOUT BILLY CHILDISH, SEEE PAGE 21
CALORIES Formed in the hot, wet, summer of 2008, Birmingham threepiece Calories mix crashing guitars and killer hooks to create songs that pound through your brain for days. Urgent and eclectic, this is noise-pop for fans of Animal Collective, Les Savy Fav and Deerhoof.
BO NINGEN Japanese four-piece Bo Ningen are Enlightenment activists from the far east psychedelic underground. Expect twisted rhythmic wig outs wrapped up in big hair and even bigger guitars. Their debut EP came on a handetched 10 inch vinyl. Time to etch them live on to your brain.
BILLY VINCENT
Touring pals of Lostprophets, the Epitaph-signed rockers are realer than Real Deal Holyfield. Since forming in 2006 they’ve gone from strength to strength – and are now strutting their stuff in the big league, as well as being worthy of Snoop Dogg lyrics in their write-up.
CALVIN HARRIS Lovely Calvin needs little introduction - irresistibly infectious dance-pop tunes built from juicy staccato synths and squelchy electro basslines have propelled him into Dizzee Rascal’s arms and the heart of the nation. Stadium dance for nights out in glittery pants.

THE CHAPMAN FAMILY
CASIOKIDS
Drawing inspiration from New Order, King Tubby, Cornelius and Fela Kuti, Norwegian electrotroupe Casiokids combine analogue sounds, trashy keyboards and pop melodies to create afro-beat techno pop that puts a smile on your face and a spring in your step. Get in!
The Chapman Family are an indie-rock band from the north east who merge intensity with chaos drawing inevitable comparisons with Joy Division and Sonic Youth. A dark and noisy distortion fuelled antidote in a musical climate big on apathy and lacking in integrity.
CHEW LIPS
CHICKENHAWK Chew Lips make pop music with fangs, packed with indestructible melodies and incessant, hipswivelling rhythms. If you’re looking for a slice of impeccablyexecuted future-pop that veers from grinding electro grooves to fevered howls, then Chew Lips might just be your new friend.
CHROME HOOF
CLOCK OPERA
Doom metal, disco, acid house and Donna Summer had a car crash and Chrome Hoof emerged from the wreckage weeping tears of manic joy. A crew of about 14, depending on who turns up, the end result is always the same – a futuristic death disco party. ZOMG!
COMANECHI Okay, so if you already know Comanechi then you probably won’t welcome a pithy description of them, if you don’t then here’s that pithy description in full: rawkus, unhinged, Japanese grunge from London that practically obliges you to poke someone in the eye.
Part of Leeds’ growing experimental rock scene, Chickenhawk are four metalexperimentalists with a penchant for testing sonic boundaries and a soft spot for freaked out riff-driven prog rock. Mosh or contemplate – the choice, dear rocker, is yours…
Yikes, a sound is spliced together from homemade samples and blunt instruments found in skips, reanimated into an aural orchestra that’s been sending shockwaves through the underground. A band with an ever-expanding sonic palette – catch them while you’re sane.
CORNERSHOP Cornershop have no enemies – only drooly admirers. This is not because they’re nobby social networkers, but because they have spent more than a decade making off-kilter sunshine pop that never ceases to be more than the sum of its parts. Cornershop = totes still got it.
COSMO JARVIS Born Harrison Cosmo Krikoryan Jarvis (glad he shortened that mouthful, huh?), the Devon-viaNew Jersey singer songwriter has landed support slots with all manner of huge names from Gabriella Cilmi, Muse and those Generator scamps of N7, The Holloways.
A Q&A with
Teenage Fanclub
Being veterans of gigging in Camden, what are your fondest memories of NW1? Post-gig, hanging around finding little late night bars. What’s that little Greek late night place people go to? Marathon? Yeah, that’s it. I’ve got fond memories of going there after shows and getting a bite to eat and a few late night beers. What are you going to be bringing to the Crawl? Well, we’ve got a new album coming out so we’ll probably be playing a few new songs, hopefully. Half of it will probably be new things and then half, things from the past. How does it feel to be headlining The Crawl after you’ve been together for so long? It’s great, it’s nice to know people still want to come and see us. I’ve never experienced the Camden Crawl but the concept does appeal to me - the idea that you’ve got one ticket
and you can wander around different venues. It’s a pretty nice idea I think. Do you know, I’m going to have to take part myself as a punter. Good idea, Norm. Are there any specific bands playing that you’re thinking of checking out? I don’t actually know who’s playing, I suppose I’d better read the programme! Have you still got your finger on the pulse when it comes to new music? I’ve got some friends who run labels and send me new things so hopefully I’ve got a bit of handle on what’s happening. I always like hearing new music. Why should people come and see you rather than all those new bands? I suppose there’s a lot of other things on so if they get to see something good during the whole event then great! I think we put on a good show so that’s why they should come see us.
What are you like before you hit the stage? Do you still get nervous? It can take one or two songs on stage before you relax into the gig but that’s not a bad thing I suppose, it keeps you on your toes. What’s being in Teenage Fanclub like these days compared to when you first started out? Pretty much the same. I suppose we don’t hang out as much together as we did in the old days because we’re all sort of living in different places now. The people in the band haven’t changed other than looking a bit older. Personality-wise they’re still the same though. Are you hoping to recruit some new teenagers for your fanclub? Yeah. We don’t have any age restriction policies, anybody can come along. Let’s hope so, I hope they enjoy it.
C-D CRYSTAL FIGHTERS
Crystal Fighters juxtapose the eerie flavour of traditional Basque folk with churning basslines and catchy vocals to create a jubilant and uplifting sound that roams from ravedup, percussive folktronica to Animal Collective-toned delicacies. Effervescent, yeah!
These dudes were Incubated in the pop laboratory of Xenomania and are currently sculpting their debut album with Flood producer of Depeche Mode’s Violator. The band sound like classic early electronic pop soaring over the Berlin Wall in 1984. Seriously. Freidrich!
DEAD MEADOW
rock scene, Anton Newcombe of Brian Jonestown Massacre produced the group’s live album ‘Got Live if You Want’, whilst a brief session with Andrew Stockdale saw ‘Everything’s Goin’ On’ being reinterpreted, renamed ‘Pilgrim’ and showing up on the Wolfmother’s second album ‘Cosmic Egg’. They’ve also featured on an episode of telly show The Wire, fact fans.
Formed from the ashes of Washington DC indie bands The Impossible Five and Colour, Dead Meadow have been fusing their love of 70s hard rock, 60s psychedelia, J R R Tolkien and HP Lovecraft since 1998. Friends with all the important characters on the psych stoner
DELAYS Drawing inspiration from British pop’s most regal bloodline (Smiths, early Floyd and the Stone Roses), Delays are a heady concoction of angelic harmonies and groove-based hedonism, A riot of page boy haircuts and nifty riffs too, in case you didn’t know.
THE DRUMS Having been crowned ‘New York’s official coolest new band’ by the NME last summer, expectations for The Drums in 2010 are sky-high. And understandably so – their songs are bound by an effortless style that has had critics and fans drooling. With a sold-out UK
DEKADE
DENIS JONES A self-taught guitarist from Lancashire, Denis is all about the loops, samples and effects, creating complex orchestrations of beat-box rhythms, multilayered vocals and loopy sounds which veer from subtle heartwrenching folk and blues to heavy bass-driven electronica.
DRUM EYES DJ Scotch Egg and ExBoredoms drummer E-Da combine duelling drums, cornets and Game Boys to form a devastating crew. Impossible to pigeonhole and only marginally easier to describe, they’ve been blowing audiences away with their mind expanding shows. tour in May, the Crawl might just be the only chance to catch this band before they go supernova. Their debut single on Moshi Moshi, the swoon-tastic Lets Go Surfing, features New Order-style trebly, melodic bass, Ventures-esque guitar, and the most infectious whistling line since Peter, Bjorn and John. You know how to whistle, don’t you, Steve?
D-G DRUMS OF DEATH
THE EIGHTIES MATCHBOX B-LINE
The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster are back – hurtling towards rock and roll like a crazed madman, foaming at the mouth, ready to strike down his Nemesis, as if that was his only reason to live. And please wipe your feet on the way in, they’ve got a new cream carpet. Emerging from a misspent youth in metal bands to discover the dubious pleasures of techno, Drums of Death live is a hot mix of synthetic techno grime and swamp rock n roll. Like a voodoo death rattle crafted on to an electronic heart, he’s messenger of doom for Generation Hexed.
ELIZA DOOLITTLE London born Eliza knows about teenage aggro, old soul and the appeal of simple, strong melodies built from clanking percussion and jazzy licks. As you watch her join the dots between Tom Waits and Minnie Ripperton, ask yourself – what would would Ray Davies say?
EMPEROR MACHINE
19 year old indie upstarts Frontiers claim to be one of Nottingham’s most promising bands, and with appearances at Reading & Leeds, and Summer Sundae festivals, it seems they could be right. Arctic Monkeys’ producer Alan Smyth definitely seems to think so, anyway.
From a tiny rural backwater in the remote south west of Western Australia, Emily Barker makes intimate and beautiful folk music formed from an eclectic tapestry of old- time narratives weaving gothic stories of fire, tragedy, love and hard lessons. Listen and learn…
ERIK HASSLE
Andy Meecham’s Emporer Machine ploughs cosmic disco furrows with one eye on the dance floor and the other on a psychedelic Catherine Wheel spinning somewhere off to stage left. Glorious bleeps, chimes and life from the Godfather of electro space funk. Live in technicolour!
FRONTIERS
EMILY BARKER & THE RED CLAY HALO
Erik Hassle writes songs about things you think of when you’re going to sleep – and sets them to a soundtrack of soulful pop. Full of grand sweeping melodies, he effortlessly extends the Swedish line in the sand drawn by acts from Abba to Robyn. Something in the water?
GAGGLE The perfect response to boring man bands and bad burlesque, GAGGLE are a 23 strong female choir who layer chaotic chants over dark, dubby beats. Big, bold, creative and scary, they’ve already found their way on to the NME Future 50 list. See it, hear it, believe it.
G-H GANG OF FOUR
The influential band’s influential band - Gang Of Four is one of the touchstone rock groups of the last 30 years. Using funk and reggae rhythms to break out of Punk’s cul-de-sac in the late 70s, the band remain a powerful, visceral, high impact rock n roll spectacle.
GENERAL FIASCO Two poop names (General Music and Marley Jedrejak Fiasco) that became one; General Fiasco are no strangers to this festival business having already got their name on the bill at Glastonbury, Oxegen and Reading & Leeds. Pretty impressive for three young lads from Northern Ireland.
Still ploughing a resolutely Independent and original furrow, Gang Of Four announced that their new album ‘Content’ would be funded by auctioning off vials of the band’s blood and other bizarre merchandise like scratch and sniff books. With ‘Content’ the first original material since 1995, now’s the time to catch the band before they sell of too many bits of themselves.
GOLD PANDA Sitting somewhere between Four Tet, Nosaj Thing and Nathan Fake, Gold Panda is a man much in demand – with remixes already notched up for Little Boots, Bloc Party and Simian Mobile Disco. Lop-sided laptop funk built to bump in yer leftfield trunk.
HOLLY MIRANDA
Not wishing to spoil the Brits’ admonitions that those over the Channel are a little odd, Parisian pop-house wonderkids recently designed a set of fridge magnets as a free gift to those who bought their single Synthetiseur. Here’s to French eccentricity. Zoot, or summat.
Graffiti 6 hoover up vintage soul influences, folk and funk, house and hip hop beats and pop melodies you could sit down with a guitar and strum. Then they laugh it all back out in your face again, like Fischerspooner if they had a better sense of humour.
HOOK & THE TWIN Brooklyn’s Holly Miranda claims to be a skilled parallel parker and thumb wrestling champ. What she doesn’t include in her list of attributes is her unrivalled ability to write heartbreakingly beautiful songs. Unfortunately, none are about her thumb wrestling conquests. Sort it out, Holly.
HOUSSE DE RACKET
GRAFFITI 6
No, not the sequel to the Hoffman/Williams classic, but a beats ‘n’ beeps duo from Bristol – and bringing their fine live reputation with them. The Krautloving pair have been tickling the fancy of your Lamacqs, Lowes, and Da Banks, so jump on the (auto)bandwagon.
THE HUNDRED IN THE HANDS That supreme dance racket that just assaulted you and your senses? Yeah, one boy, one girl, that’s all it was. And the girl’s name is Eleanore Everdell – surely the elfiest name that e’er was given to a human being. Signed to Warp Records, it’s only fair to expect quality.
Welcome Home
Lightspeed Champion He’s the bonkers-rangoff indie poet who makes Conor Oberst’s heart sing and every wannabe hipster look like they covered themselves in Prit-Stick and cartwheeled through Primark, but is he looking forward to the Gaymer’s Camden Crawl, and is it obvious this interview was done over email? Yo, Lightspeed, how’s it going? Shall we call you Dev, or Lighty? Do you mind? Whatevs, let’s get on with it. So, you’re returning home for the Crawl after your move to New York - how you feeling? Pretty good, if I’m honest New York recently has been rather traumatic, it’ll be a welcome break. How does London compare to, say, um, New York? I mean, the thing is with that question, is everyone tends to prefer where they didn’t grow up. They’re both pretty similar, with subtle differences out-weighing the other in my personal opinion, but each to their own, I think almost all cities are pretty similar.
Is there an area of New York that reminds you of Camden? Hmm, St Marks.
What do you miss most about London? I don’t know, things I miss aren’t specific to place, more incidents and people.. actually , none of the above, I keep in touch with people I like. Did you hang out in Camden much? What were your feelings about the area? Not really. It was always way too intense for me! Can you remember the first Camden show you played? Where was it and how did it go? Erm, probably at The Dome or Verge... and most likely in a crappy Hardcore band, Almost certain it was awful! What’s your favourite venue to play in Camden? Koko.
You had to pull out of the Crawl in 2008 due to illness, Sicky McSickboy - are you looking forward to finally being able to play? Yeah, should be a laugh riot! Is there anyone on the line up you’re going to try and watch? Keith from We Are Scientists is one of my best friends, they’re playing same day, so will try and catch them.
I-J I BLAME COCO
Coco Sumner (think about it, you’ve heard that surname before – probably in a pub quiz) is the one you’re blaming. Ian Brown reckons her lyrics are “mega”, she’s provided guest vocals for Sub Focus, and she’s 19 years old. Makes you sick, doesn’t it?
IS TROPICAL
INVASION The description ‘Drunk Wizard Metal’ should be all you need, but if you insist: A heavy (and ‘heavy’ in the sense of the disturbing, nightmarish rock that could only be contained by cassette) bass-less triumvirate of two girls and one Niceness.
JAMIE WOON A member of loads of London art collectives, Jamie Woon is also a super experimentalist, creating multi-layered, atmospheric R’n’B. When not backed up by his band, he becomes a one man band in an impressive display of musicianship.
BMX-riding, mask-wearing, boat-stealing. Just a few ways of describing Is Tropical. And then of course there’s the irresistible electro they make that fills the Klaxons-shaped void whilst the new ravers are lost in the longest sci-fi K hole known to man.
THE JIM JONES REVUE The Jim Jones Revue are making it their mission, no, their lifestyle choice, to strip rock ‘n’ roll not only to the bone, but right down to the marrow. And then to suck on that jelly and digest its devilish juices. They are here to save your corporatebought soul.
JOE WORRICKER Hailed as the male Amy Winehouse, Joe Worricker does share a knack for pop with jazz inflections with NW1’s party-loving resident. Unlike her, it doesn’t seem like he’s going to spend the next five years completely out of his box. Probably a good thing.
JOE GIDEON AND THE SHARK It’s safe to say that Joe Gideon & The Shark (aka Joe’s little sister Viva) are the only band on the Crawl to have been involved with both the Barcelona Olympics and Miss Bolivia. A strange but true story, ask them when you’re pissed and they’ll tell you all about it, innit.
JOHN AND JEHN Trés cool duo John & Jehn upped sticks and left their native France, settling in London to write songs about the despair of being in love. Inspired by The Velvet Underground and French legend Serge Gainsbourg, these guys are pretty pretty, if you know what we’re saying.

2010 LINE UP SOON TO BE ANNOUNCED AT WWW.OFFSETFESTIVAL.CO.UK
J-K JOSH WELLER
KAP BAMBINO
This Bordeaux duo’s aim is to put you in the centre of the messiest mosh-pit imaginable and they’ll do it, not by guitars, but with a fort-full of synths and samplers. Plus, one of them’s called Orion Bouvier – and who doesn’t want to see the man with the World’s Best Name? Multi-instrumentalist Josh Weller may not be familiar with the art of hair brushing, but he certainly knows his way around a pop song. Sounding as unique as he looks, Josh writes about society and love, with the overarching theme being ‘it’s pretty f**king weird.’
KARAOKE FOR BEGINNERS (KFB) Not a guide on how to take your first steps into the humiliating and often drunken world of singing other people’s songs really badly, but a band, Karaoke for Beginners have been described as an “acid-fried Sisters of Mercy wrestling the Stooges for poker chips.” Quite.
KASSIDY
Alt-folk with a distinctly New York twist. The comparisons will inevitably be bandied, and there’s a sniff of a Brit-folk ‘scene’ having been fashioned, but what are you going to do? I’ll tell you what, go see this lot play, enjoy, then thank me for it later.
Led by the siren for the modern punk masses that is the fizzing bundle of shocking red-haired energy, Rachel Mary Callaghan, Kasms have coined their own genre to describe their sound ‘shriekbeat’. Let’s see if catches on more than Wrong Pop, which we made up in 2008.
KATY B
Big sounds, big songs and nothing but four Scotsmen and their acoustic guitars making it happen - and not an amplifier in site. Might sound like a gimmick, but if that’s enough to get you curious, then a gimmick it is. (But let’s be clear – it isn’t)
KURRAN AND THE WOLFNOTES
KASMS
Darker, more soulful strains of Funky House (you read that right) have moved to the space where Garage and Grime used to be, and it’s in that space that Katy B resides. Barely out of her teens, she’s featured on some of the scene’s biggest tunes.
KYTE NME said ‘Kyte will steal your heart’, so we already know they’re thieves. What else do we know? Well, they’re a four-piece from Leicester producing the sort of gleaming, ultra-melodic pop that John Hughes (God rest his soul) would’ve chucked on a slow-motion montage like that.
L
LEAFCUTTER JOHN
LEFT WITH PICTURES
Not only is John a full-time solo musician, he’s also a member of jazz band Polar Bear, writes music software, and has played concerts worldwide with the likes of Nick Cave, Grace Jones and Jarvis Cocker. As far as we can tell the only thing he’s not is a leafcutter.
This ‘found sound’ orchestral pop quintet released their anticipated ‘Beyond Our Means’ debut LP last year, which earned them many a champion. Clever, arch, and ever-ambitious, they are easily a match for any other wonky folksters cut from the same cloth.
THE LIKE LIGHTSPEED CHAMPION, SEE PAGE 32
LONELADY With a debut LP still fresh and warm on the record shop shelves – or if you’re a little less romantic, boxed in massive crates in a warehouse in Jersey – Lonelady remains raw, distant, and distinctly and curiously black and white. She taps, very honestly, into the
Daughters of music industry bigwigs and Elvis Costello’s drummer, the Like christened themselves so because of their tendency to say ‘like’ all the time. Hey! We do that too! They’ve supported Razorlight, Arctic Monkeys and Muse. Not bad going, like. rain-soaked Mancunian musical heritage of which she is an observer, and now, it seems, a participant. Very good, you may be thinking, but nothing a good cup of tea wouldn’t sort. True, it’s angst-filled and low-fi, but there’s a fair heft of sharply cut white-funk in the mix, so at least you’ll be dancing while you’re staring furiously at the half empty pint in your hand.
THE LOST LEVELS Listen to one song and you’re thinking minimalist, low-fi synths with a healthy squeeze of Classic British Pop, listen to the next and it’s thrashy, electro-y rock . Keep listening and you’ll be thinking damn these genrehopping madmen, where’ve you been all my life?!
LOSTPROPHETS, SEE PAGE 53
A Day in the life of
We are Scientists They write infectious indiebangers, sold a trolley-load of records, and they’ve got nice hair. But how will the post-punk revivalists spend their Crawl? Boiling eggs and eating cakes, according to main man Keith Murray.
What’s your pre-show breakfast? We like to start the day with alternating boiling-hot and ice-cold pints of cider. It’s both bracing and intoxicating, if done correctly. There’s lots of arts and crafty daytime stuff and fringe events at this years festival. Are you interested? If by fringe events, you mean things like eyeball-piercing or kidnapping or the surgical creation of a “human centipede” attached via the digestive tract, then, NO, we are certainly NOT interested, thank you very much!
You decide to meet Lightspeed Champion for a picnic on Primrose Hill. What food would you pack and what do you think he would bring with him? If i know LightChamp - and I do - he’d come up to Primrose Hill empty-handed and claim to have prepared a full roast chicken and mashed potatoes and vegetable dumplings and a beet salad and bread sticks and a cheesecake and some cannoli and jugs of white wine sangria, but have left it all in the cab on the way to the picnic. He does it every time, and then helps himself to the Domino’s pizza that I’ve had delivered for myself. You try to jump the queue at Koko to catch Chrome Hoof but you’ve lost your pass and the bouncer doesn’t let you in. What would you say to convince him to let you in?
I would not say anything. I’d simply lift my left pant leg slightly, directing his attention to the actual, physical chrome hoof with which I’ve replaced my foot in tribute to that fine band. If you could invite one artist to join you onstage to play a cover for your encore, who would you choose, what would play and why? I think we’d invite our heroes, Gang of Four, onstage to play “At Home He’s A Tourist.” Then, while they were in the throes of the song, we’d sneak off stage for a quick drink, returning just in time for the big finale. At an aftershow party, Calvin Harris come up to you and starts giving it “all that”. What do you do? I’m not sure who Calvin Harris is or what “all that” means. If he’s a caterer, though, and “all that” is a suite of cakes, including carrot cake, cheese cake, and a key lime pie . . . well, I’d probably give him a nice, big tip. If you had to curate your own stage for next years Crawl, who would you book and why? I’d probably hire all of the magicians I could locate, get them all into one room, and then fill the room with molten metal. It’s a well-known fact that encasing a practitioner of the dark arts in metal is the only way to safely capture him.
M-O MALE BONDING
One of Dalston’s finest lofi bands, it’s hard to believe Male Bonding only formed a year ago. Consisting of bezzie mates Robin Silas Christian, John Arthur Webb and Kevin Hendrick, they made their name in hip bars and house parties, buddying up with their
MAN LIKE ME Spraypainting your name on the shutters of a Camden shop probably isn’t the most legal form of promotion going but cheeky indie-grime hybrid Man Like Me don’t seem to care. And neither will you once you’ve witnessed the all-singing, alldancing MLM spectacle live.
MR DAVID VINER Mr David Viner’s story is one full of rock’n’roll greatness. Given his ‘Mr’ prefix by the late John Lee Hooker in Detroit, David’s stayed on the couches of some of the city’s garage rock heroes like the Von Bondies and White Stripes. Alright for some.
NECRO DEATHMORT Necro Deathmort (aka ‘the heaviest thing since sliced lead’) are a bit obsessed with death. The subject crops up everywhere, including in how they describe their sound. That’s ‘a thousand monkeys beating each other to death with typewriters.’ Obvs.
fellow cool and trendy musical neighbours for split releases and more sweat-soaked shows than seems humanly possible. Now, they’ve signed to the label that first brought us grunge, US giants Sub Pop, with their debut album Nothing Hurts recorded and ready to be unleashed on the world. So grease up your hair, dig out your best flannel shirt and get on down.
MIDNIGHT JUGGERNAUTS Describing their DJ sets, Oz’s finest psych stars say it involves them ‘spinning rekkids, moonwalking badly’. Here’s hoping they adapt that first bit for the Crawl to ‘playing instruments’. They share initials with the late, great MJ for god’s sake. It has to be done.
MS DYNAMITE She’s Ms Dynamite-ee, she’s back blowing up your stereo... The lady in question, Niomi Daley, took a break a while ago to concentrate on the joys of motherhood but now she’s back, bussin’ on the radio, bouncing in the video and all of that.
NEW YOUNG PONY CLUB From fad band to something a whole lot cooler - new rave might be dead but New Young Pony Club most certainly aren’t. Gone might be the days of ice cream licking and getting lucky, but they’ve been replaced by something far, far more exciting.
MOUNT KIMBIE Based in the creative hotbed that is South East London, Mount Kimbie are Dominic Maker and Kai Campos. Welding together post-rock and dubstep, the results are soothing and hypnotic. Just what you’d need to relax to if you had scaled the real Mount Kimbie.
NAT JOHNSON & THE FIGUREHEADS Breaking free from her Monkey Swallows the Universeshaped shackles, Nat Johnson went solo before hiring The Figureheads to stop her getting lonely. She could’ve just used her loop sampler to have conversations with herself, but each to their own.
OH NO ONO They might be barely known over here but back in their Danish homeland, psychpoppers Oh No Ono are celebrated as national pop stars. If only Britain would follow their lead and make a bunch of weird, mind-bending geniuses national treasures. If only.

Shouty mathcore five-piece Rolo Tomassi smahsed a few hearts and eardrums with the loopy intensity of their debut album, and now they’re back with the Diplo-produced follow up, Cosmology. Yep, that’s right, Diplo - the man behind the wonky pop belters of MIA and Santigold. So what’s it all about then, and are they looking forward to melting some faces at the Crawl? Screamy lead singer Eva fills us in. So your second album’s called Cosmology - have you gone all starry eyed since making it in LA? We’re all incredibly happy with the record and that we had the opportunity to go over and make it in LA. I wouldn’t really say we’re particularly starry eyed with the experience though! How was working with Diplo? It was a lot of fun. We haven’t worked with a ‘producer’ as such in the past so we had no idea what to expect. The end result is the happiest with been with any recording we’ve ever done so it worked out pretty well for us. What are your memories of the last time you played the Crawl? Getting absolutely battered on a seemingly endless supply of Red Stripe and dancing til we got chucked out of the electric
A Q&A with
ballroom. How about your first ever show in NW1 - where was it and how did it go? We’ve played there so many times I’m not even sure what our first Camden show was! The earliest memory of playing in Camden is supporting Trencher at The Barfly. My keyboards failed at a key moment at the end of the set and the crowd sang the melody when they realised it had dropped out. That was pretty cool. And your best Camdenbased show? Our recent headline show at The Barfly was great. We sold it out which was the first time we’d sold out a show in advance in London so we were all pretty excited about it and it totally lived up to expectations. What about Koko? Played there yet?
Rolo Tomassi
Yeah, we played there a few years back, opening for 65daysofstatic. It really is a lovely venue. Unfortunately, we had to go on 15 minutes after doors at 6.45pm and played to about 10 people. What’s your total favourite venue in the area? Koko was pretty amazing. At the time it was by far the biggest venue we’ve ever done and the whole scale of the building blew our heads off. Who are you hoping to check out at this year’s Crawl? Hopefully I’ll have time to go check out Surfer Blood. I’ve heard nothing but good things about that band’s live show and the recorded stuff I’ve heard is great. It’d be cool to see Midnight Juggernauts too. Any bands on the line up you’ll be looking to get a pint with? I would have said Pulled Apart By Horses but I think they’re playing the day before us. It’ll be good to see Tubelord. They’re a lovely bunch and always good conversationalists too!
P-R PENDULUM
Having jump-started a stale drum and bass scene by introducing super-charged synths and falter-step rhythms back in 2003, Pendulum have now conquered the world of rock music with a live show that fuses live instruments and electronics. Double bonus!
PHILADELPHIA GRAND JURY
Philadelphia Grand Jury aren’t actually from Philadelphia. They aren’t even from America, and it’s almost 100% likely they’re not part of any jury - grand or not. Such blatant lying would be unforgivable if it wasn’t for the yelpy blues rock the duo put their name to.
PLAN B Plan B has recently made a swift transition from salt-of-the-earth rapper to Mark Ronson-style crooner. His Crawl show will be an early chance to see how successful this deft musical manoeuvre has been – expect musical muscle from across the hip hop and soul spectrum.
POLAR BEAR When he’s not filling his spare time drumming with Pete Doherty and Acoustic Ladyland, big haired (seriously, it’s huge) jazz percussionist Seb Rochford leads his cult group Polar Bear through left-field sonic experiments. Ace, but less cuddly than an actual polar bear.
PULLED APART BY HORSES Super hardcore Leeds boys Pulled Apart By Horses put on a show not to missed. Brimming with fist pumping riffs and throat shredding vocals, they’re noisy and exciting as fuck. Maybe pack some waterproofs in case guitarist James Brown starts looking a bit queasy, mind.
THE POSTELLES Manhattan boys the Postelles are definitely no strangers to rubbing shoulders with revered indie bands. Counting The Strokes’ Albert Hammond Jr amongst the fans, those lucky boys were even invited round to the guitarist’s house to record some tracks in his living room.
RIGHT HAND LEFT HAND If they weren’t a duo, Right Hand Left Hand (consisting of Rhodri Right Hand and Andrew Left Hand, appropriately enough) could definitely be described as a Cardiff supergroup, featuring prominently, as they do, in various other bands from around the Welsh capital.
RACE HORSES A psychedelic treat, authoring tales of mental illness and cake, main man Meilyr Jones gives us his Crawl Picks. TEENAGE FANCLUB I’m a sucker for Norman Blake’s beautiful voice and perfect pop songwriting.Great, great band, and as I missed them the first time round (I missed, or disregarded most of the 90s), I can’t wait to see what they’re like live. LIGHTSPEED CHAMPION He’s a great songwriter with 70s pop sensibilities (which of course is a brilliant thing). I saw him play a muddy tent in the Wakestock festival a couple of years ago and they blew me and the mud away! Y NIWL I’m really looking forward to seeing Y Niwl (which means ‘the mist’ in Welsh), they’re a proper instrumental surf band who we’ve played a couple of gigs with. They sound quite Joe Meek, with amazing guitar reverbs and organ solos. OH NO ONO We’re all dead excited to see this band play live. I got given a promo of their album ‘EGGS’ a few months ago, and it fried my brain when I heard it. It sounds like beautiful pop music from another planet. They’re freaky too. They look like sinister brothers, sort of like Jedward, which I feel can only be a good thing.

RUSTIE ‘Bass fuelled party aquacrunk’ is what Glaswegian dance producer Rustie deals in, and it’s sure got a lot of people excited. The boy’s already remixed the likes of Modeselektor, Kid606 and Phon.o with a release on Alex Smoke’s new label in the pipeline.
ROX 5 reasons why Roots Manuva kicks-ass ONE One hope one quest
The blistering, bass-driven romp Witness (1 Hope) is still a shortcut to dance floor destruction nearly ten years after it was first releases, and was voted Best UK hip hop track by Hip Hop Connection magazine!
TWO Twice as nice
His second album Run Come Save Me was released twice – the second time featuring dubbed-out versions of the original. He pulled a similar trick for third album Awfully Deep. Twice as nice!
THREE Partners in crime
The man’s done more collaborations than you’ve had hot dinners, and counts Gorillaz, DJ Shadow, The Herbalizer and Toddla T among his musical conquests.
FOUR Bananaklan
The ever-morphing Roots Manuva live entourage Bananaklan host dub n poetry nights in London. In your face drum n bass!
FIVE Substance and style
Roots’ first album was named Brand New Second Hand in tribute to his family’s modest lifestyle – his show might have style but Mr Manuva’s always been about way more than bling.
21 year old Rox used to spend her summers as part of the National Youth Theatre until she swapped jazz hands for Portishead and Lauryn Hill. Now she’s busy working on her own blend of soul so unique that she’s already showcased on national TV.
SAMUEL AND THE DRAGON Ace as it would be if Samuel was actually joined by a dragon, it would also send the health and safety bods into overdrive. A huge, fire-breathing reptile probably wouldn’t have as good a grasp on producing urban electro as James Cameron (aka ‘the Dragon’) either.
SHARKS A name that represents how the band sounds, Sharks are a savage, flesh-ripping group from the unlikely rock’n’roll surroundings of Leamington Spa. the band recently supported thrash punkers Trash Talk, and know just how to start a badass heavy party.

1. Don’t get drunk and pass out by the lock:
Camden is there all year round! There are plenty of other weekends for you to do that. You have paid for a wrist band so use it!
2. Don’t just stay in your comfort zone
Camden Crawl has loads of great little events and showcases on so go and try out something outside of your normal tastes. The Book Slam event for example offers up a variation of spoken word and literature to fill the gaps between noisey mayhem.
3. Don’t spend all day in queues
Right, lets admit this now….there WILL be some bands you miss or can’t get in to see. Be ready to admit this to yourself early on! Instead of standing in a queue for hours, go catch a band you’ve never heard of.
4. Don’t miss the unscheduled fun
The Camden Crawl can often throw up some good, “off the schedule” events and shows so keep an eye out for those special little events.
5. Don’t start your day without a plan
As boring as it sounds, a little organization could make the weekend for you! If there is a band you REALLY want to see then making sure you are there a little early is always worth it.

The keytar was never that cool, was it? Even back in the 80s it was a little bit wack. Well NYC duo Shy Child as so super-cool that they manage to imbue it with sexy wompy credibility. Which, along with their fistful of floor fillers, makes them double hella cool.
SILVER COLUMNS Flitting between hallucinatory, lethargic hangover-pop and helter-skelter electro, Silver Columns (recently revealed to be Adem and The Pictish Trail) represent the quintessential experience of the Crawl in sonic form - heaps of fun coupled with the resulting wooziness.
What they lack in numbers, northern boy/girl duo Slow Club sure make up for in heart. Charles and Rebecca will take you on a emotional rollercoaster, but at least there’s the soothing comfort of getting to watch Rebecca drum on anything but an actual drum.
At the start of their career,Stereo MCs couldn’t afford a backing band so carted a shedload of tapes around with them on the bus. These days, they’ve probably got the cash for extra musicians, but keep your eye out for them on the 29.
Sussex-born Smoke Fairies started out writing ‘stupid songs about dead pets, life and where we lived’ whilst at school but since then they’ve gone on to become braver and colder in character, taking their music with them from Chichester to New Orleans and back.
SPEECH DEBELLE
Spectrals is the brainchild of L, ‘a stand up guy’ from a small town in the top half of the UK. A fan of ‘Slush’ based beverages and writing to Phil Spector in prison, he’s also a dab hand at writing glorious, fuzzy pop songs.
STEREO MCS
Grime sensation and part of the Boy Better Know crew (along with his brother JME), Skepta (formerly known as DJ Off Key) is following in the footsteps of other grime luminaries like Wiley and Chipmunk, rising through the ranks to certain stardom.
SMOKE FAIRIES
SLOW CLUB
SPECTRALS
SKEPTA
She won the Mercury Prize for her badass debut, Speech Therapy, and graced the cover of seminal music mag Plan B’s last ever issue. Not one to hang around watching crappy telly, she’s already working on her next record, which is going to be called The Art Of Speech.
STORNOWAY The first words Stornaway shared in the hallowed halls of Oxford University were “do you like Teenage Fanclub?” which is pretty gosh darn weird, considering the Scottish legends are one of the Crawl’s headliners and they’re playing on the same bill. Yowzer!
album out now “This debut from the Toronto rap crew is a vivid, mash-up of dirty electro, dancehall, reggae and snarled hip hop.” Q “Messed-up, mashed-up fun.” The Daily Mirror “Peter-John and DJ Cirkut have spliced beats with electro rhythms and hedonistic lyrics, creating something original.” Music Week myspace.com/letsgotowarmusic lastgangrecords.com
S-T STRAIGHT LINES
Pontypridd quartet and labelmates of Frank Turner, Straight Lines might be relatively new to this game but they’ve somehow already managed to back a support slot with Motorhead. Whether they can walk in a straight line after 10 pints remains a mystery, though.
STRANGE NEWS FROM ANOTHER STAR
They might share a name with a Blur song but don’t let that fool you - SNFAS are far from sounding like ghosts of Britpop’s past. Originally a duo, Mark Foley (mentioned in Future of the Left’s Manchasm) joined last year, possibly because he’s always right.
SUGABABES
STRICKEN CITY
None of the original line up remain as Sugababes continue on their path as the UK’s most successful girl group ever but if Jay-Z and Rihanna can get over it, so can you. Just don’t mention Keisha, unless you want to face Amelle’s wrath.
Iain Pettifer and Rebekah Raa first met in maths class wearing exactly the same clothes. Whether they dress identically for the Crawl remains to be seen, but they and their band mates are guaranteed to delight with ramshackle post-punk songs about love and loss.
SUMMER CAMP As anyone who’s parents forced them to go on summer camp will know, it’s not the ideal way to spend the holidays. Folk troubadour Jeremy Warmsley and Platform editor Elizabeth Sankey’s creation is less of a traumatic experience and more like sunkissed twee-pop dream.
THE SUNSHINE UNDERGROUND Whilst recording their second album, TSU relocated to an isolated part of Scotland, surrounded by nothing but nature. The result was a longplayer full of forward thinking indie pop, which they’re looking to smash people’s chops with at the Crawl.
THAT FUCKING TANK TEENAGE FANCLUB, SEE PAGE 25
DIY math rockers refuse to do their sums with a calculator, that’s how DIY they are. When they’re not puzzling over tricky arithmetic, they’re booking their own tours and working day jobs like underground musical superheroes. Another reason why they don’t need calculators.
SURFER BLOOD West Palm Beach’s Surfer Blood aren’t as brutal or as waterinclined as the name suggests. That said, they do make more powerful indie-pop than being smacked round the chops with a surfboard. Just don’t ask them if they actually surf.
TODD Formed at legendary label 4AD’s request (for a Breeders support slot, no less), Craig Clouse - like anyone with half a brain decided it would be silly to turn the opportunity down. Eight years and a few line up changes later, Todd are still going strong.
Lostprophets
In the ten years since the release of their debut album Lostprophets have become arguably the UK’s biggest hard rock band. Yet, only now, four albums and three drummers later, does lead singer Ian Watkins feel the band are “drawing a line under the growth period”. In which case, now seems the perfect time to be returning to Camden, where the band played the first date on their first ever tour.
How, then, does it feel to be headlining the Roundhouse on the Sunday of Camden Crawl – a prestigious closing slot in a legendary rock venue? “It’s wicked, yeah, it’s cool,” says Watkins in a south-Walian accent which seems the antithesis of (or perhaps an antidote to) the rock star image. “We shot the video for [2003 single] ‘Burn Burn’ there and London’s always been wicked whenever we’ve played, we spend a lot of time there – with friends, for press and we played Camden Barfly on our first proper tour.” Their latest LP, The Betrayed, was released in January following a difficult three-year writing and recording process (during which an album’s worth of material was recorded, then scrapped). “It feels like we’ve
come out of basic training and now we’re running ops” says Watkins of the experience. “We definitely needed those three years, because the true test is how you weather the storm, not how you sunbathe on the deck when it’s calm.” And barring a few – admittedly headline – festival appearances, it’s only this year that Lostprophets returned to gigging. But it’s been quite the return. The Roundhouse gig comes at the end of a national and world tour, and marks the beginning of another busy time for the band: festival season. “I love them,” says the frontman, “I don’t know whether it’s a working class chip-on-yourshoulder Welsh thing, but it’s the feeling of being an underdog – I’ll play anywhere, take anyone on!”
T-W TOTALLY ENORMOUS EXTINCT DINOSAURS
A time machine was sent back to just before all the dinosaurs went BOOOOOOOM!!! and died. Horribly. And they said “RRAAAGH listen up future kids. We got the big tunes” and they sorted us out with a few dubplates. Prehistoric dubplates made of granite. Listen.
TREETOP FLYERS
Quite why they’re flying from treetop to treetop isn’t obvious (nor entirely relevant really), but West London’s folk troubadours seem to be pretty good at it. In with the rest of the crowd, Treetop Flyers have toured with Alberta Cross and First Aid Kit.
TUBELORD
Made up of members of Sexy Kids, The Royal We and Your Twenties, Veronica Falls are what the afterlife for the cassettetape entombed legacy of C86 looks like, a little more ghostly palloured than its precursor but still clutching the same Sunday morning pop sensibility.
VILLAGERS Domino’s latest signing Villagers began life as a nameless collection of musical poems, penned by Conor O’Brien, guitarist to Cathy Davey and formerly of the Immediate. Recruiting some friends to help him give them a new lease of life, Villagers was born.
WE HAVE BAND Having worked in the music industry, We Have Band could have taken the easy route, sucked up to their old contacts and forged a path to stardom in 6 months flat. Being straight up sorts, they’ve taken a hard graft approach that puts some bands to shame.
Bristol’s biggest unsigned band, Turbowolf are also probably the biggest sounding in the West country too. With Death From Above 1979-sized riffs, Justiceinspired electronics and larger than life choruses, you’d have to find something pretty darn heavy to beat this lot. and the now departed (but still very much alive) Sean Bamberger. New recruit Tom Coulson-Smith has filled the bass-wielding void, whilst the trio has extended to inlcude fourth member James Elliot Field on keyboard duties as they continue on their path to becoming the UK’s underground heroes.
What the hell exactly is a Tubelord? A band from outer London suburb Kingston-uponThames who make desperately, ferociously romantic pop songs for rock kids, born out of boredom and a deep, longrunning bromance between Jo Prendergast, Dave Catmur

WE ARE SCIENTISTS, SEE PAGE 39
WE ARE THE OCEAN Snarling power rockers We Are The Ocean are anything but wet. Nor are they actually an ocean, because that is physically impossible. You could say they represent the dark underbelly of the treacherous waves that wait patiently for their victims beneath a calm facade. Maybe.

W-Y WILD PALMS
Possibly named after the US mini-series about brainwashing, Wild Palms are an equally mind-bending combination with influences ranging from TV On The Radio to Liquid Liquid. Word has it they’ve recently ditched their familiar angular sound for something more expansive.
XO MAN A self-proclaimed ‘barrier breaking artist’ XO Man sees himself as more of a movement than a musician. He’s already gained support from Rob da Bank and slots at Bestival and the Big Chill, and whilst that might not quite be a movement, it’s definitely something.
WINTERSLEEP Wintersleep, from Halifax, Canada, must feel at home surrounded by building societies bearing their hometown’s name, right? But do they like Howard, eh? Or do they think he’s always one step away from going postal and killing a duck? Do they? Dunno. Do you? DO YOU?
Y NIWL Apparently, Y Niwl’s drummer is a mutant metronome and the bass player walks like a panther. Sounds like there’s something not quite right going into the water in Wales. That, or Y Niwl are bending the truth like a particularly bendy guitar, of which they own two.
YOUNG MARBLE GIANTS Formed in Cardiff in 1978, Young Marble Giants are hardly young anymore, but with a back catalogue of scuzzy post-punk joy like Colossal Youth to hand, you don’t need to be youthfull and shiny. This is a true legend stuff, and you should drop most things to see them.
YR ODS Iawn conts. Neges bach i bawb sy’n siarad Cymraeg... cwrw rhad rhwng deg a hanner nos! Confused? Well Yr Ods sing in both English and Welsh, just like many of their more well known brethren, like Gorky’s and Super Furry Animals, so don’t get spun out when they flip you for real.
YUCK Half of hip new buzz band Yuck might have been in Cajun Dance Party but that isn’t even slightly reflected in their new lo-fi dusky pop sound. Bizarrely, drummer Jonny was found after a chance meeting with singer Danny in Israel. True story.

‘War Child are very much looking forward to being part of The Camden Crawl next year. It’s a fantastic opportunity to work locally with musicians, music lovers and local businesses. The Camden Crawl has a great reputation for putting on some of the best live acts and War Child are proud to be part of it.’ Mark Waddington, War Child CEO War Child is a small international charity that protects children from the brutal effects of war and its consequences. We currently work in Afghanistan, D.R. Congo, Iraq and Uganda. We’re on the ground - supporting the most vulnerable children that are too often forgotten in the aftermath of conflict. We provide a number of services for children affected by war including; counselling to help children cope with the effects of war; vocational and professional training which gives them future opportunities; reintegrating child soldiers with their families; getting children off the streets after war has forced them to leave home; separating children from adult detainees in prison and providing legal aid; rebuilding schools destroyed by war and getting children back into education. War Child has an established, proud and unique relationship with music, dating back to the ‘Help!’ album in 1995. Since then War Child has released an award-winning catalogue of five albums, winning gongs at The MOBOs, The Brit Awards, The Q Awards, The NME Awards and the only compilation up for the Mercury Music Prize. War Child has broken records for the fastest album ever released (1995’s ‘Help’) and the fastest downloaded album (2005’s ‘Help: A Day In The Life). Our music supporters include Sir Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Radiohead, U2, Coldplay, Bob Dylan, Oasis, Lily Allen, Stevie Wonder and Elbow. The support of these amazing artists has helped raise over £4m for War Child’s work. War Child website www.warchild.org.uk

ADVENTURES CLOSE TO HOME
Renowned party hosts Adventures Close To Home may have hung up their bashplanning boots at the turn of the year but they’re back for the Crawl, promising a night to rival all the others that have now gone but are not forgotten.

Having spent the past three years orchestrating a domination of London, Bloody Awful Poetry once again infiltrate the Camden Crawl to delight the baying masses with bloody good music, bloody awful prose and enough alcohol to sink a small Oliver Reed.
Caught In The Crossfire is the bastard son of Zac Slack and James Sherry who, after many years on the live music and club scenes, decided to blow a hole in the rules and combine a melee of explosive live acts and party-charged DJs.
