Hey Mum and Dad, Now you can stop asking me questions. Ajat

Hello Dad, I hope when you go through this book, which is made for you guys, will show you what I actually do in school and why you always see me working everytime we talk. Selin

THERMOGRAPHY Remember when you get an invitation where the text kind of comes up from the paper? Well that’s thermography. It’s a pretty simple process, all you need is thermography powder and just melt it on the text using a heat gun.

GILDING It’s all about gold with this process. Just put a coat of gold powder on the text with a brush and it will stick on the ink giving it a shiny antique look.

VARNISH Varnish is putting a plastic like coating on a printed piece like text or an image. It has a glossy or a matte finish. The varnished text or image becomes highlighted and smooth. This technique should be easy for you mum because it would be like applying nail polish.

HAND LETTERING This one doesn’t really need explanation, does it ?

JUXTAPOSITION The difficult art of using two very different images and making them work together or trying to get a contrasting effect.

EMBOSSING Creating a third dimentional design or image on paper, or in layman’s terms, the ‘raised’ text or image on the paper is called embossing. DEBOSSING This is the opposite of embossing. The design or image will be depressed on the paper leaving an impression. It’s also known as Letterpress Printing.

OVERPRINT Printing many layers of ink on one design is overprinting. The order of the inks you use affects the outcome because when two colours are layed on top of each other you get a combination of them, so you have to keep that in consideration. [1] MISREGISTRATION The appearance of a printed image out of its correct position which creates a nice shadow or a 3D effect. [2]

HALFTONE Halftone uses a series of dots in a specific pattern that look like a continuous image. You see these kinds of images in your daily newspapers.

MONOTONE Monotone means a single tone, so it uses a single colour in the image. [1]

DUOTONE Simply put, it’s a black and white image where the whites have been replaced by a different colour. So in the end you see two tones. [2]

TRITONE Adding two different colours to a black and white image is a tritone. So in the end you see three tones. [3]

QUADTONE The last member of the tone family, adding three different colours to a black and white image will result in a quadtone. So in the end you see four tones. [4]

SILHOUETTE This process creates an image outline using a contrasting background. You do lose a lot of information but it creates an air of mystery and a story for the images.

TYPE ON IMAGE It’s writing text on an image. But you have to consider the text, typeface and the image and whether they work well together.

REVERSE TYPE Also known as knockout type, this process doesn’t print the type or the design but just the background colour.

VIGNETTE The loss of clarity around the edges is called the vignette effect. It creates a rustique look and highlights the center of the image.
