John Foulds Arranged by Keane Southard
Hymn of the Redeemed from
“A World Requiem” for
a cappella SSAATTBB Choir
(1921/2019) (Duration: c. 4 min.)
Program Notes: John Foulds has been called one of the most unjustly neglected musical geniuses of the 20th century and was almost completely forgotten for almost a half-century after his death in 1939. However, his World Requiem, a massive large-scale work for vocal soloists, multiple choirs, and a large orchestra written as a memorial to the dead of all nations after World War I, was very popular in its day. Performed in London’s Royal Albert Hall annually from 1923-26, it, along with nearly all of his compositions, laid unperformed until the past few decades when it was finally revived in 2007, again at the Royal Albert Hall. To me, the Hymn of the Redeemed from the “In Pace” movement of Part II is one of the most beautiful passages in the entire work. Originally for a choir of boys, youths, and men, I have arranged it for SSAATTBB choir so that it can be performed by more choirs. Keane Southard 2019
