WELCOME MESSAGES
DEAR FRIENDS OF THE F O U N DAT I O N ,
S TAT E C E N T E R COMMUNITY COLLEGE F O U N DAT I O N
It is extremely gratifying to see the positive impact of scholarships, mini-grants and campus improvements funded by State Center Community College Foundation in students’ lives every day. As the cost of education continues to rise, access to education becomes more limited, and daily struggles continue in many people’s lives, there is no better way to support students as they strive for success than by helping to offset the cost of learning and improving the programs available to them.
played an integral role in the passage of Measure C, a $485 million facilities bond. I’d like to thank the Foundation members under the leadership of President Gina Cuttone and the community for their support. Measure C will allow us to continue our rich tradition of student success by empowering educational excellence as we provide state-ofthe-art facilities in preparation for the future. Since its inception, the Foundation has been providing students with scholarships and our instructors with MiniGrants. With the Foundation’s assistance, we are taking this one step further and providing qualified students a free semester of college with the Central Valley Promise. This pilot program includes Fresno City College, Reedley College and five school districts. Beginning in 2018, qualified students will get their first semester of community college for free and will later be guaranteed acceptance to Fresno State, if they meet admission requirements.
The Foundation and its Board members continue to be passionate about making a difference in the lives of the individual students, our campuses, the workforce and our Valley. Together the Foundation Board, along with many generous members of our community remain dedicated to our District and to providing aid to aspiring students and to helping meet the many needs of our campuses that are not supported by normal budgetary funds. This is why, in 2013, the Foundation Board set aside $1.5 million to be used to match donor gifts of $5,000 or more to establish an endowed scholarship or endowed program. As of today, we have established 49 endowed scholarships for a matching total of $422,000.
The Promise will reach out to students in grades 6 through 11 to create a college-going culture. It will ensure that if students and their parents pledge to do what it takes in middle and high school to prepare, college will be there for them in the future, guaranteed. We are planning to expand the program to all area school districts and colleges as we gain both funding and program support.
In addition, State Center Community College Foundation was able to provide $80,000 each to Clovis Community College, Fresno City College and Reedley College, totaling $240,000 these past two years to help with additional campus needs and programs.
As the District continues to grow, we are prepared to provide new facilities, new programs and innovative instruction with the assistance of the Foundation. Thank you for your generosity.
Please review this year’s State Center Community College Foundation’s Annual Report that reflects many of our successes. We are truly proud of our accomplishments and look forward to increasing our impact in the years ahead.
Sincerely, DR. PAUL PARNELL
Chancellor, State Center Community College District
Sincerely, GINA CUTTONE
President, State Center Community College Foundation

Joyce Yamaguchi, Executor of the Minoru and Rinko Yoshioka Estate

T H E M I NORU AN D R I N KO YOSHIOKA LEGACY
Rinko Yoshioka was born in the United States to Japanese-born parents. She was a retired registered nurse who passed away at the age of 91 in 2014. Rinko understood the time and energy it took to complete the RN program and in 2009 established with her husband the Minoru and Rinko Yoshioka Scholarship. Their endowed scholarship was established with a $100,000 contribution and currently benefits students in the RN program at Fresno City College. With the passing of Mr. and Mrs. Yoshioka, their estate contributed an additional $342,000 toward their nursing scholarship. Rinko, at age 19, and her family were relocated from their home in Sanger, CA, where they worked the vineyards, and were sent to an internment camp in 1946 as part of the Government declaration that California was no longer a free zone to people of Japanese descent. A visit from Eleanor Roosevelt to the camp was an inspiration to Rinko that she could become a nurse and she began working at the camp hospital. When released from the internment camp, she was able to attend school to become a nurse. The Foundation is very grateful to Minoru and Rinko Yoshioka and our other generous Legacy Circle Members — individuals who have graciously included State Center Community College Foundation in their estate plans.

ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS The Foundation currently supports 148 endowed scholarships. This number continues to grow as more and more donors realize the benefit of funding a scholarship in perpetuity. Endowed gifts are deposited into a restricted financial account and student scholarships are awarded with earnings from the restricted principal gift. Many donors continue to establish endowment scholarships due to the Foundation’s Board of Directors matching “new” dollar-for-dollar contributions of $5,000 or more.

NEW BOARD MEMBER
SPOTLIGHT Kevin Herman
“ “We’re all here to do what’s best for the students and campuses.”
As a farmer in Madera County, Kevin Herman sees firsthand the incredible impact community colleges like Madera Community College Center has on young people in a small town. He believes making the transition to higher education is difficult for students; many of whom have never traveled outside their hometowns, English might be their second language or financial burdens present an obstacle. In 2015, Herman joined State Center Community College Foundation Board because he knows the significant benefits a community college can provide.
it means knowing that someone cares about their future.” Kevin and Diane are committed to helping students carry out their educational pursuits and in 2015 contributed funds to support the Agricultural Program at Madera Community College Center where new courses in soil science and wine appreciation will be offered to students. Kevin and Diane are thrilled about the program and the prospect of Madera becoming a fully accredited, stand-alone college. He says the college will be great for students, but will also give the community a place to rally around.
The Mark Herman Memorial Scholarship (Osher) was established by Kevin and his wife, Diane, in memory of his brother in 2011. This $1,000 scholarship is awarded each year to a deserving student at Madera Community College Center. Herman says, “It’s so heartwarming to go to a scholarship ceremony to see people receive a scholarship for the first time — to see them get excited and emotional, and to see how much
Herman is excited to be a member of the State Center Community College Foundation Board because, as he says, “We’re all there to do what’s best for the students and campuses.” The Foundation is very grateful to have him serving on the Board.

The Renaissance Feast for Scholars is State Center Community College Foundation’s premiere annual fundraiser. The Feast raises major support in providing financial assistance to students through the funding and establishment of scholarships, which greatly helps students in achieving their dream of a college education.
monies raised through scholarships helps to offset the cost of tuition, fees, books and other expenses giving students the opportunities to focus on their education, immerse themselves in more learning opportunities and attain even greater academic and future success within our communities. The Foundation Board of Directors sincerely appreciates the investment by the 2016 Renaissance Feast for Scholars Sponsors for their support in helping students achieve their dreams of higher education.
We celebrated the 12TH anniversary of the Feast by welcoming back the Queen to jolly ole England. The attendees enjoyed a period-themed dinner and an extraordinary live auction. The auction raised more than $55,000 for 33 scholarships. The

CHANCELLOR’S CIRCLE October 4, 2015
positive effect it has on students and their educational pursuits. Campus visits started in March 2016, when we welcomed newly appointed Chancellor, Dr. Paul Parnell and his wife Silvia to State Center Community College District. The VIP reception was intimate and provided the Chancellor’s Circle members the chance to personally speak with Dr. Parnell, learn about his plans for the District and included a time for conversation.
Chancellor’s Circle is State Center Community College Foundation’s annual membership society made up of individuals, companies and organizations that are invested in making a difference in the lives of students pursuing and achieving their higher educational goals. The yearly membership fee of $1,000 supports the needs of students, provides scholarships and contributes to the State Center Community College Foundation.
In early spring of 2016, members were treated to a lovely meal prepared and served by the culinary students at Fresno City College. Speakers for the luncheon included Dr. Paul Parnell, Chancellor, Peg Mericle, Ph.D., Dean of Instruction, Social Sciences division and Jonathan Davey, Culinary Arts Instructor.
Chancellor’s Circle members receive invites to the colleges throughout the District to go behind the scenes on tours, learn about career, technical and educational programs taught on the campuses, and have opportunities to meet and sit down with students, faculty, administrators and the Presidents of the colleges and centers.
Don Larson, Foundation Board member and Chancellor’s Circle member since 2012 says, “Chancellor’s Circle membership is an opportunity for the entire community to be involved in supporting our students and believe me, they are our future. Being a member of the Chancellor’s Circle can make all the difference.” To learn more about the Chancellor’s Circle society and investing in students, contact Kelly Joos, Assistant Director at Kelly.joos@scccd.edu
Each year, the Chancellor’s Circle society kicks off its annual membership with a dinner welcoming new members to the society with a special pinning ceremony. The evening is highlighted by hearing from the Chancellor’s Circle scholarship recipient about the impact scholarships make, what it means to the families of these students receiving scholarships and the
