“Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.”

Welcome I am writing this from home - very aware of the future and all the new challenges we will have to face when returning to school. It has been a strange few weeks - setting work via Google Classroom and answering several e-mails about your logins and passwords for mymyaths :) It is good to see you engaging with your work and embracing the "home-school" learning. Thank you for all your efforts and hard work. It will pay off in the end. I am very excited about September 2020 for several reasons. We have many of you in Year 11 that applied for A-Level Maths. Roding Valley Maths Department is ready to help you succeed in your studies and looking forward to having you back in school. The current Year 12 students have been receiving online teaching every week and will soon start with the Year 13 content. It is quite challenging, but we are using Google Meet, webcams and other "tricks" to deliver lessons. Who says you cannot teach an old dog new tricks? Keep safe and keep your Maths Braincells healthy and happy. All the best Mrs Vermaak, 2nd in Mathematics & KS5 Coordinator

Student Work Many pages of work completed by Lacey Rowe on Area of Circles, one of the many new topics the Year 8s are learning independently at home. Well done to every one for the fantastic effort you are putting in to your learning. Just one thing Lacey, next time coud you submit your work on Google Classroom!

Roding Riddle Answer to last weeks riddle: The cat would receive £18 because each animal received £4.50 per leg.

Chess Corner We are sure you are all missing chess club just as much as Mr Dennis! We have put together our best chess tips and tricks to share with you. The second tip is:

Tip 2: A chess opening is a pre set number of moves that can be employed at the start of the game. The Ruy Lopez Ruy Lopez opening makes use of the common Chess Opening double king’s pawn opening (1. e4, e5). Immediately white then threatens black’s king’s pawn with his knight. Black responds with his knight defending the pawn and white pins down black’s knight with his bishop to the king. The Ruy Lopez is one of the simpler openings and makes use of the three important concepts during a chess opening - controls the centre, develop your pieces, and enables castling.
