Year 8 News
Message from Ms Hegerty
It is with sadness that I write my last Year 8 bulletin at Roding Valley High School as I am leaving RVHS at the end of this autumn term to teach in a different educational setting. It has been fantastic to see my year group grow personally and academically over the last eighteen months from when they joined RVHS in Year 7 in September 2023. I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know them as young people, supporting them across all areas of their school life, as well as teaching and sharing my love of history with them.
Thank you to the parents of carers of Year 8 for their continued support over the last two academic years. I wish my year group every success over the years to come at Roding Valley and in the future - I will remember them fondly.
Next week on Tuesday the 17th December we will have our end of term Year 8 Celebration Assembly! This is a lovely opportunity to celebrate our students' success across subjects, form time, personal development and attendance. Please ensure students are in school on time ready for line up so we can kick off the assembly on time as there is a lot of celebrating to be done!
Please be aware that Year 8 Exams will begin the week of the 20th January 2025. Students will be formally assessed across all subject areas and these exams will be done in the sports hall under exam conditions. Some in class revision will take place after Christmas however we do encourage all students to do independent revision at home using resources on Google Classroom and the Year 8 Microsite. Please see the link to the Year 8 Microsite here.
I wish you and your families a peaceful break over the coming festive period and wish them the best of luck in the New Year and beyond.
In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website. It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling. If you believe that your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please click here to use our Free School Meals Checker. Your Certificate of Eligibility will then need to be emailed to finance@rodingvalley.net

Message from Miss Reed
It is crazy to think we have almost completed the first term of Year 9. Students have worked incredibly hard this term towards their exams which have recently been taken. I am extremely proud of all the Year 9 students and their effort and commitment this term.
Year 9 have this week completed their exams which have gone extremely well. We have followed the

Next week we will be celebrating all the successes students have had in their subject areas and around the school. We have lots of students who will be receiving certificates in our assembly next week. I will share the presentation link in the first bulletin of the new year so please keep an eye out for it. There is also a rewards fayre next week where students will be selected based on their effort so far this year, made fantastic contributions and taken part in extra-curricular.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy and healthy Christmas and New Year and look forward to welcoming Y9 students back on Tuesday 7th January 2025.
Message from Mr Ryan Year 10 News
We are finally reaching the Christmas holidays! It has been an incredibly tough term with everyone working as hard as possible to make sure that the students make progress. I am very pleased with my own class as well as the classes that I visit throughout the week. I have been very pleased as I have been receiving nominations from subject teachers for our rewards assembly next week. There are so many certificates to hand out, I'm not sure we'll get through it all in the time allocated!
I will share the link of the awards presentation in the first bulletin of the new year so please keep an eye out for it.
I have to say a massive congratulations to Oliver Wu who has won the England badminton national championships gold medals in boy's single, boy's double, and silver in mixed double. Winning the boy's single means that he becomes the national champion this year!
Tonight, I am looking forward to seeing the year 10 Drama students School Pantomime. I know that they have put lots of effort in and I can't wait to be thoroughly entertained by them. I know the dress rehearsal performance to local primary schools was a great success!
I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas and I hope that you take a rest and enjoy the time with your loved ones over the coming festive period.

Sixth Form Open Evening 5th December 2024
Last week we welcomed over 300 families to view our sixth form provision and meet our lovely students who volunteered their time to promote their subjects. We want to say a massive thank you to all the sixth formers who gave up their evening to give valuable advice to the next cohort of students. We had overwhelmingly
positive feedback but this did truly centre on how fantastic our students were. They were articulate, kind, helpful and great role models of what families would like their own children to become. Here are some photos from a variety of subject stands.

Young Professionals Event – 25th November 2024
‘As a Year 12 student still figuring out my career path, it felt amazing to hear from women who had started in similar positions and worked their way up in industries like tech and business. Their advice about believing in yourself and not being afraid to fail also motivated and inspired me. Also, I met some wonderful girls, and only the sharing of what we wanted to do in life was enough to make the experience great. The atmosphere was so supportive and lively and it made me feel like I wasn't alone figuring out my path. I am way more motivated and excited about the future now. Whoever gets a chance to attend a YP event, I definitely recommend it. That is a great way to get inspired, meet new people, and learn from those who’ve built a successful career’ - Sabrina
‘On Monday the 25th November I was lucky enough to attend the young professionals’ females of the future event. I have previously attended other young professionals’ events both online and in person as I follow their Instagram where they often post about popular things like this. The day began with an apprentice panel, where we gained valuable insights into the apprenticeship experience and the challenges that may arise. This was followed by a recruitment panel, which offered practical advice on how the application process works and how to navigate it effectively. The networking session was a great chance to connect with senior leaders from companies such as PwC, UBS and Bloomberg. I gained a deeper understanding of their recruitment processes and the skills they look for in candidates. We also heard from Harriet Hougham Slade, who shared her journey to becoming a Senior Manager at PwC, providing valuable insights into how to progress within the corporate world. We also got to hear from dan miller the ceo and founder of young professionals who inspired us with the story of how he started his company in year 12. Overall it was such a positive and enriching day and am very grateful to young professionals for the opportunity to attend this - Kezia

British Science Week 2025
We will be celebrating Science from the 7th to 16th March 2025. Please read the short details below on the theme of the event:
“Change and Adapt
Change and adaptation is all around us
Changing and adapting plays a big part in science; you can find examples in every area of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Cities, towns and other areas where people live change and adapt as the world’s population grows, plants and animals change and adapt to their surroundings to survive. Technology has changed exponentially and adapted to our new, busier lives (or have we changed as technology has developed?). For example, phone technology has changed rotary home telephones to smartphones.
When exploring this theme, we can also consider how attitudes to STEM and the people who do it have changed and adapted. Perceptions of scientists are changing and we need to keep adapting our thinking until we can no longer picture a ‘stereotypical scientist’ – anyone can be a scientist.
Change and adaptation is often a good thing, but not always! A topic we have all become more familiar with in the last four years, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is viruses and how they adapt to better infect and multiply within their living hosts. This can be scary, but understanding this behaviour allows scientists to develop the most effective vaccines and other treatments.”
Please read the details below. It is open to ALL Year 7 to 9 students

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app. 1
Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.
Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.
Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.
Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.
Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.
Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.
Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor. 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Support your child with Thinkuknow websites
The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.
Our websites provide open and honest guidance for young people on friends, relationships and the internet, covering topics like dealing with pressure; consent; and getting support when you are worried.
You will find lots more advice on keeping your child safe online at www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents.
If you are worried that a child or young person is at risk of harm online, you should call the police. Young people can make a report to CEOP at https://www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/
