As we approach the midpoint of another busy half-term term, I am pleased to share with you some of the recent highlights and upcoming events at Roding Valley High School.
Our Year 11 students have recently concluded their Pre-Public Examinations (PPEs). These assessments provide valuable practice for the upcoming GCSEs and offer insights into areas where further support may be needed. I commend our students for their dedication and hard work during this challenging period. Teachers have been busy assessing, marking and moderating and we will share the results with parents, carers and students over the next few weeks.
In our ongoing commitment to nurturing leadership skills, our Sixth Form students have been actively engaged in mentoring younger students. This initiative not only benefits the mentees but also provides our older students with valuable experience and personal growth opportunities. Every Friday morning the mentoring takes place in Brook Library and it’s wonderful to see so many new and developing relationships emerging between our students. Thanks to all the year 12 students who have volunteered to take part in this.
World Book Day was celebrated with enthusiasm across the school, promoting the joy of reading and the power of literature. It was wonderful to see the creativity and passion for books displayed by our students and staff alike.
Recently, a group of our students embarked on a poignant visit to the World War 1 memorial in Belgium. This educational trip provided a sobering reminder of the sacrifices made by previous generations and deepened our students' understanding of this crucial period in history.
Looking ahead, we have several exciting events on the horizon. Our Duke of Edinburgh Gold Expedition participants will be setting off next week, facing new challenges and developing essential life skills. We wish them the best of luck in their endeavours.
In the coming weeks, our Year 12 students will be visiting the University of Southampton, offering them valuable insights into higher education options and university life. This trip forms an important part of our careers guidance programme, supporting our students in making informed decisions about their futures.
As we approach the Easter break, many of our year 9 students are eagerly anticipating the ski trip to Italy. This promises to be an exhilarating experience, combining physical activity with the opportunity to experience a different culture.
I am delighted to announce a recent sporting achievement: our Year 7 Rugby team has been crowned West Essex Rugby champions. This is a testament to their skill, teamwork, and dedication. We are immensely proud of their accomplishment and look forward to their future successes. A big thank you to Mr John as well for his expert coaching and leadership of the team!
As always, I am grateful for your continued support of our school community. The engagement and enthusiasm of our students, coupled with the dedication of our staff and the support of parents and carers, continue to make Roding Valley High School a vibrant and successful learning environment.
Wishing you all a restful and enjoyable weekend
Mr Charlton

It has been great to see how well Year 7's have been doing so far in their second term at RVHS!
Please could we have a huge push on ensuring that our uniform is worn correctly in line with the school policy, and that we are not wearing trainers. We had our fourth House Assembly a few weeks ago. This was a great assembly to see which House is currently winning with the most House Points. It was also great to see which Year 7's received the Star of their Form. A huge congratulations to the following students:

I would like to take this opportunity to remind you of some important school expectations for Year 8 students.
Firstly, please ensure that your child is adhering to the school's uniform policy. As outlined in the policy, the uniform should be worn correctly at all times. If you need a reminder of the details, please refer to the school's uniform guidelines.
In addition, I want to highlight that students should not be leaving lessons for toilet breaks unless they have a medical pass. Teachers are aware of students who have been granted such passes, and we ask for your support in reinforcing this expectation at home.
Attendance is also a key factor in your child’s success at school. Regular attendance is vital not only for academic progress but also for developing a love of learning. Every lesson counts, and being present and engaged helps our students reach their full potential. We appreciate your continued support in ensuring your child is attending school regularly and on time.
Lastly, I would like to commend all Year 8 students for their hard work and dedication over the past few weeks. Their commitment to their studies does not go unnoticed, and we are incredibly proud of their efforts. Moving forward, we will continue to work together to help them succeed and achieve their best. Thank you for your continued support.
To report any property lost, please email: lostproperty@rodingvalley.net
We ask if you could provide a detailed description of the item you have lost so that we can reunite you with your missing property.
Options - The deadline for options to have been made has now closed. Thank you to all of those students who managed to submit them in time. I am meeting with those students who have requested a pathway change over the next week to finalise subject choices. All students will then receive their finalised options subjects the first week after the Easter Break. A reminder that GCSE subjects begin the first week after the May Half term.
Expectations - Can I please remind students and parents/carers of our school expectations in terms of uniform and using the toilet during lesson time.
Students need to be wearing a full school uniform every single day and wearing it correctly according to the school policy. This means that blazers should be worn, skirts not rolled and top buttons done up. There will be consequences for students who continually cannot get this right. If there are any concerns with your child's uniform, then please do inform me.
A reminder that students are not allowed to use the toilet during lesson time unless they have a toilet pass which is given out when medical evidence is provided. Students should be using the time before school, break and lunch time to use the toilet.
House Points - Congratulations to the current top 5 students in Year 9 who have received the most house points this year. They are well on their way to receiving a reward at the end of the year.

Wishing everyone a lovely weekend.
In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling. If you believe that your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please click here to use our Free School Meals Checker. Your Certificate of Eligibility will then need to be emailed to finance@rodingvalley.net
As we continue to work through year 10, I had the sudden realisation that there are only 4 months left of the year and as such most students will find that they have learnt a great deal of content of their GCSE courses. Each child should have a PLC from each subject available. This is to enable students to see what they should cover and what has already been taught. These are also really useful revision tools. If your child does not have these could you please contact their teachers as I am sure that they will have spares.
I am aware that the year group are continuing to grow (I've never felt shorter) It has become apparent that uniform is not up to its usual high standards. Skirts should be on the knee and shoes need to be plain black leather. If you need help with obtaining any uniform please let your child's form tutor know.
On Wednesday Mrs Mason and I launched this year's careers week. This follows on from last Thursday's Careers Fest. I have included some important dates for your diaries and will keep referring to these throughout the year.

Finally, congratulations to the first round of completed DofE students –well done!
Our final set of PPE exams were completed earlier this week and I would like to congratulate students on how well they have done during this process. These results will prove useful as students prepare for their final exams in the summer.
We will be holding a mock results day on the final day of term, Friday 4th April, in order to give students the experience of what it will be like in August.
A reminder that the intervention lessons are still on offer for students to be attending - Year 11 Intervention Timetable

The Year 11 Leavers Day is on Thursday 19th June, which will be followed by the Prom in the evening. More logistics around this will be sent nearer the time.
Please note that invitation to the prom is based on gaining Prom Points and the vast majority of the year group have been gaining these already. This is based on punctuality, attendance, engagement in lessons and also performance in the PPEs.
Payment for the prom and leavers books can be made on Parentpay. A link for a leaver’s hoodie, which can be purchased from Forest Casuals, will also be sent soon.
In order to prepare for the leavers book we will be holding a leaver’s photo session on Tuesday 18th March Students will take a final photo which will be used in the Year book.
Thursday 27th February – A Level Politics
At the end of February, Year 12 and 13 Politics students went on a tour of the UK Supreme Court. This visit is a key part of paper 2 unit 4 on relations between institutions. Students were able to visit all the courtrooms and see a live case in action (Catherine Waller-Edwards v One Savings Bank Plc).
Students also took part in a walking tour of Whitehall, including Downing Street, Horse Guards and the MoD. Thank you to Mr Cocker and Mr Murray for taking the students on this trip.
3rd March –
Last week, we welcomed 187 external students to interview at Roding Valley Sixth Form. This was the highest number ever and we continue to see places in the sixth form come under intense competition. Our current year 12 and 13 students did a fantastic job of serving refreshments and making them feel welcome. We will be sending our offer letter out to internal and external candidates in the next month.
A team of 8 Year 12 students took part in the European Youth Parliament regional round at Churchill College Cambridge on Tuesday. The students competed against students from six other schools in debating motions that affect social and economic development across all European countries. The students proposed a motion to tackle youth unemployment and anti-social behaviour and stepped in on the day to oppose a motion on economic reform of the European Union. The team contributed to every debate and all teams were noted for their excellent performance during the debate rounds. This is the first time that a sixth-form team has competed in this competition but students had a great day and have volunteered to work with next year's team to ensure an even better result.
Tuesday 4th March – Media 10
It was lovely to welcome back Rob Nathan from Media 10 for our weekly Employer Tuesday talks for sixth form students. We have lots of students interested in Media careers and we are so grateful for the support of our local employers.
Many of our students have gone on to employment at Media 10 and hearing from Rob about all of the opportunities and how a rewarding career it can be was incredibly inspirational for them.
Thursday 6th and Friday 7th March – WW1
39 students from Years 9 and 13 participated in a two-day tour of the First World War Battlefields. The beautiful weather allowed for an immersive and meaningful experience. Year 13 were focussed on their English Literature War Poetry and were ably led by Mrs Routledge and one of our tour guides Alain, students commented on how it brought the war to life. Sites visited included:
Lijssenthoek CWGC Cemetery, Bayernwald trench system, Tyne Cot CWGC Cemetery, Newfoundland Memorial Park, Thiepval Memorial to the Missing - and many more significant locations
A special moment occurred when four of our students laid a wreath from Roding Valley High School during the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate. We're incredibly proud of how our students represented our school community during this important educational journey.

World Book Day 2025 was nothing short of magical. The day was filled with excitement, creativity and a shared love for reading, making it a truly unforgettable event for both pupils and staff alike. The highlight of the day was the incredible staff costumes. Teachers and staff members truly embraced the theme, arriving at school dressed as characters from beloved books. The corridors were filled with vibrant displays of imagination as staff members were transformed into literary icons; from fantastical wizards to classic heroes and heroines. Whether it was the daring detective Sherlock Holmes or the whimsical characters from Alice in Wonderland, every costume sparked conversations and inspired students to think about the books behind these characters. It was clear that staff had put a lot of thought and effort into their outfits, and their enthusiasm added to the overall fun and spirit of the day.
In addition to the costumes, the school has also unveiled a captivating display showcasing the staff's favourite books/ This display features a wonderful collection of reads that represent the diverse tastes and interests of the Roding Valley staff. From classic novels to contemporary best sellers, the array of titles sparked curiosity and encouraged students to explore new books they may not have considered before. Teaching staff began all of their lessons on World Book Day sharing what made their selected book special to them, offering insight into their personal connection to Literature or Non-Fiction reads. The Year 7s engaged in a challenging quiz and were excited to find the answers to their questions throughout the school day and this was such a joy to see.
Please encourage your child to spend their World Book Day token and we hope to continue fostering a love of reading with your support from home.
A huge thank you to all the parents and students who attended the Careers Fest last Thursday 6th March.
I hope you will all agree that it was an incredibly inspiring event. We had over 1,000 visitors attend the Careers Fest 2025 and we have received so many positive messages from parents, students and exhibitors.
This is an annual event and if any parents work for a company who would like to join us for next year’s Careers Fest please get in touch.

National Theatre Connections is back, and our team of Year 8’s, 9’s and 10’s, assisted by Mr Wilson and Tony Dean (Year 12), will perform the brand new work, Brain Play, in school on Thursday 3rd April, CA1, 6.00pm. After Easter the group takes the show to Queens Theatre Hornchurch, where they will perform on a professional stage to a paying audience. Tickets for the show on Wednesday 7th May are available from the box office.
Brain play concerns the story of Mia, a school girl who is picking up the pieces of her life after her father suffers a devastating injury, affecting his cognitive ability. Mia is supported by her friends but hampered by the nagging from her own mind. Mia's brain is represented by a chorus or really annoying Y8s, while all of the adults in her life are represented by puppets made out of clothes!

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app. 1
Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.
Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.
Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.
Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.
Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.
Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.
Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor. 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.
