Welcome Welcome to this week’s bulletin and a warm welcome from Miss Harbutt and Mrs Nisar. We are new to the Maths department and we are very much looking forward to meeting and working with you in September. Miss Harbutt and Mrs Nisar, Maths Teachers After joining RVHS in April 2014, I will be leaving at the end of this academic year for a new school in Bishops Stortfort. It has been a privilege to be part of the Sixth Form journey. We started with a small group of Pure Maths students, and now we are the biggest Sixth Form subject and offering Further Maths and Core Maths as well! My years at RV had many ups (and only a few downs - eg. when I broke my collarbone). Having students achieving great results and helping them to move onto careers and further studies is always a blessing and very rewarding. I loved being part of the Maths Department. Roding Valley has a very special group of people dedicated to student well-being and progress in Maths. They support each other and also work together as a team when needed. I will be following your progress closely and am looking forward to results day in August (although a bit strange this year) Keep up the good work and always do your best. Life is too short to wait for tomorrow - do it today! Best wishes and keep smiling. Mrs Vermaak, Key Stage 5 Maths Co-ordinator

opportunity to take part next year. I will be speaking to some of our best performers in Year 7 after the summer break. We will, hopefully, be taking part in the UKMT Team Maths Challenge next year. We came 2nd this year, and we are now aiming for the Number 1 Spot! But do keep in mind, I don't always take those who performed the best but rather those who are willing to put the hard work in! Well done everyone for taking part!
Student Work Excellent work this week from Monica Jaye in Year 9, working on fractions and decimals. Mr Dennis was particularly impressed with the neatness and high standard of your work. Well done!

Chess Corner - The History of Chess Chess as a game has a long history, spanning all across the world. Chess originated in India as a war game in the 6th century and gradually spread into Persia, Southern Europe, Russia and eventually the whole world. In the 1500's the rules of chess were changed in Europe to change the nature of the game to be more fast paced and to allow opposing pieces to come into contact with each other more rapidly. One

example of the changes was that the Pawns could move 2 squares on their opening move. The biggest change however was how the Queen worked. In the original game, the Queen was named the Vizir and could only move one square, whilst now in modern chess she has a range which potentially spans the whole board. It was this fundamental change that defined 'modern' chess as we know it and opened up a huge array of new tactics, gambits and strategy. Later rules were added for specific tournament play such as the use of clocks, but the key components of modern chess are the same as in the 1500's. Nowadays international tournaments attract players from every nation in the world and In the UK alone around 500,000 chess sets are sold every year, putting it by far the most popular board game in the UK.
