“Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.”

RVHS Parent Bulletin Aspiration Respect Endeavour Weekending: Friday 20th September 2019 Message from the Headteacher It has been an amazing start to the new academic year with a very positive attitude from all in our school community; it has been great to see how seamlessly our Year 7 students have settled in to life at Roding Valley. I have also enjoyed seeing so many of our Year 11 cohort return as sixth formers. Thank you to all the parents of Years 10, 11 and 12 who have attended our Transition Evenings. These have been very well attended and a significant amount of information was provided. The presentations can be found on the school website and the links are below: https://www.rodingvalley.net/parents/how-you-can-help-your-child/ Please note that the Year 8 and 9 Transition Evening is on Thursday 3rd October.  Year 8 at 6pm in the main hall.  Year 9 at 7pm in the main hall. Yesterday, some of our Year 10 students continued their journey on the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, travelling to Buckinghamshire for their first practice expedition for their Silver Award. Extra-curricular activities started last week, we have included the full timetable of clubs and activities further on in this bulletin. Please encourage your child to get involved, there is something for everyone. Our wonderful PTA have organised a disco for the Year 7’s to be held on Friday 11th October, full details of this event are included within this bulletin. If you would like to become a member of our PTA, please contact Natalie Sellears, nsellears@rodingvalley.net All money raised by the PTA is used to support the learning of all students. The school will be hosting its Open Morning on Saturday 5th October from 9am to 12pm. Thank you for your support in allowing students to help and participate in this important event. Last year, we had hundreds of well dressed, polite, proud and helpful students on site acting as guides and helping in subject areas. Please do encourage them to support the school on this date.

Please note that the school will close at 12.20pm (after lesson 4) on Friday 4th October to allow time to prepare the school site. Normal food arrangements will be available to students at break time only on this day. A letter with full details will be emailed to all parents next week. There has been a lot of interest shown in school today regarding a Climate Change Protest. Some students did stay away from school to attend the protests in London. However, those who were in school are expected to abide by the school rules to retain the good order of the school. I do believe that this is an important issue and we will work with the Student Voice to find ways to allow them to express their views over the coming weeks. Please can I ask you to remind your child that they should not be using their phones during the school day; they are always welcome to call home from the school office. However, they are allowed to use their phone at the end of the day but only once they are outside of the school building. I appreciate that they may then want to message friends and family to coordinate their journey home. All students are aware of these rules and also that the phone will be confiscated if used inappropriately. Over the last few weeks, we have received a number of calls from Poets Place complaining about the amount of parents using their car park when dropping off and collecting students from school. Please can I ask that all parents refrain from using their facilities and request that you find a more suitable place to park. I would like to thank you with your support in advance for this. Finally, a reminder that we do not expect our students to be hanging around the station area into the early evening. My team are always out and about in the area to support students at the end of the school day but, after 3:30pm, I do expect that students are making their way home as they become their parents’ responsibility. The overwhelming majority of our students behave impeccably but large groups of teenagers can appear imposing in the community and there are some unpleasant people who hang around the station. I am sure I have your support as you will not want your child involved in any actual or assumed anti-social behaviour. Obviously, I hope that many students will be staying behind after school to take part in extra-curricular activities or subject interventions, therefore this notice will not apply to them.

We have included within this bulletin a list of key contacts for your information. Enjoy the bulletin and have a lovely weekend. Mrs S Jenner

We asked three of our Year 7 students to write about their experiences in their first two weeks at Roding valley, here’s what they had to say: ‘My first 2 weeks at RVHS was an amazing adventure. It is crazy how I have gone from being tiny in reception to being in year 7 at secondary school. My favourite lessons are drama and PE. I have really enjoyed doing netball. I was so nervous on my first day but I have settled in fine and my first day turned out to be the best adventure ever!’ Martha Lumsden- Year 7 “My first 2 weeks at RVHS have been very fun. My favourite lesson has been drama. We had to create a performance based on ‘my first day at school’ I worked with Layla and Maddie who were 2 students and I played their Mum who was very embarrassing! I also enjoyed Music where we learnt to play a song on the keyboard and I think I actually learnt the riff! I cannot wait to continue my RVHS journey!” Melody Anderson-Sceats- Year 7 “My first 2 weeks at RVHS have been very enjoyable and excitable. The first week I got lost and confused as to where to go but the students and teachers were very helpful and I was soon navigating my way around the school easily. I have joined netball, photography and dance club and have also been elected as the ‘student voice’ for year 7. I have enjoyed all of my classes, particularly science, English and drama. I really like it at RVHS and I hope I will have a good future here.” Iyla James- Year 7

Welcome Back from Mr Dobson Smart devices, Smarter kids. As we start a new school year, parents, students and teachers are excited to see students learn and grow in a safe environment. We at RVHS take our safeguarding of all students very seriously and hope that we can educate all students to stay safe. As well as making sure our students are physically safe, we want them to be safe online; therefore in the Character and Culture lessons, we will be looking at staying safe online. Can I also remind students/parents and carers that apps can be deleted and the internet can be turned off. Most organisations will have a dress code and at Roding Valley High School we want to make sure that all our students, parents and carers are aware of what is expected. Full uniform details are on our website. If you have any questions about uniform please contact your form tutor. Well done to Bianca Nedelu & Sydnae Smith who has been chosen after an interview to represent Year 8 on the Student Voice, a very prestigious and exciting opportunity. I was also very happy to see so many Year 8's at the Tour Guide training given by Mr Cheema on Thursday morning. The tour guides are often the first student contact many visitors have at RVHS and therefore it is of fundamental importance that they set the tone and philosophy of our school. Can I also give you some important information regarding some upcoming events:  Year 8 Transition Evening: Thursday 3rd October @6pm  Year 8 Assessments: Week beginning 7th October  Year 8 Parents Evening: Thursday 21st November A letter will be sent out next week regarding the details of our Year 8 Information Evening.

8B/Bio2 “They have worked extremely hard on their Science Skills booklets so far this term. Well done and keep it up!” Nominated by Miss Edwards

Message from Miss Williams During Period One we have been encouraging our students to set individual learning goals and targets for the year ahead. This allows students to become more active participants in their learning, become independent learners, become self-motivated and achieve their full potential. Research suggests that students who set their own learning goals and targets indicate that they have more confidence to take on more challenging tasks increasing their self-esteem. Here are a few examples of our Year 9 students’ goals and aspirations this year:

'I want to get on to the football team and go up a grade in English' Jack Thurgood

 

'I want to get over 80% in all my assessments' Meghan Chilvers

 

'I would like to move up a set in Science' Jack Carr

'I want to pick the right options for me and pass my Religious education GCSE' Emma Flowers 'I want to have a more positive attitude this year and try harder in all subjects' Chloe Coupland

'My goal is to read more books in order to get a higher grade in Geography and History' George Edwards Please join us on the 3rd of October for our Year 9 Transition Evening. The evening will contribute significantly to the success of your son/daughter in their forthcoming assessments and exams during Year 9. On the night we will be providing the following information:  Information on Key resources to support your child’s learning  Character and culture and PiXL edge  Assessment details  Work expected at home  Support available to you and your son/daughter in school In the past, this meeting has proved invaluable in communicating to parents the requirements of the various courses being studied by students. Next week our theme is ‘Attendance’. Please support us in sending the message that students being in school is vital for them to succeed and reach their potential. The impact of missing school is immense and will be the difference between students achieving well deserved grades to underperforming in all subject areas. We hope our students will take this year very seriously and all achieve 100% attendance.

Message from Mr Ryan It has been an excellent start to Year 10 with students getting involved in the D of E and Student Council. I would like to thank all of the parents that attended our Year 10 Parents Transition Evening. As I said at this event, although we are aiming for every student to succeed in their GCSEs, we also need to help them further on down the line in relation to their Sixth Form and University applications. Every activity that students can put down on their references will help them. For those that were unable to attend, you can find the presentation on our website. Therefore I am really pleased to announce that Lauren Marks and Tolani Aradeon are the Year 10 representatives. I have also received excellent feedback about both Michal Nowak and Emily Bates. Both students have been working exceptionally well over the past three weeks. Keep up the great work!

Year 10 Football Update Year 10 Started their Season with a brilliant win against Oaks Park in the Essex Cup on Monday Goals from Lewis (3), Leon (2), George and Albert. What a fantastic start!

On Wednesday, our Year 10 students learnt some valuable skills, before travelling to Buckinghamshire for their Silver Practice Expedition.

Message from Miss Reed I am extremely impressed with the way our Year 11 students have started the term, which I expect to continue leading up the GCSE Examinations. Thank you to those parents who attended the Year 11 Parent Transition Evening last week, which saw Miss Larkin present some excellent revision strategies that pupils should be using over the coming months, for parents that could not attend, these are available on our website. Intervention sessions are in full flow during lunchtimes and after school. It is great to see so many students committing to these at an early stage ready for the first set of PPE’s in November.

Year 11 Football Update Year 11 started their season with a brilliant win away at Walthamstow Academy in the Essex Cup on Wednesday with a bare 11 players due to some lastminute dropouts. Goals from Edward (3), Tom (2), Jay and Daniel. Keep up the fantastic work!

David Igwe “For his determination. In Geography David has set himself high targets and is consistently working hard to meet them”

Message from Miss Wheaton A big thank you to all of the parents who joined us yesterday evening to support their son/ daughter in their Sixth Form journey. Here is a link to the presentation on our website, which we shared with you on the Evening: Year 12 Parents Transition Evening

On Tuesday, Year 12 went on a teambuilding day at Lambourne End. What a fantastic start to the year they have made and this day summed it up. They worked hard to communicate and collaborate to win the prize at the end of the day. Congratulations to Mr Dennis’ team for their victory. Mrs Mason commented: “I was so impressed with how they all helped each other, listened to each other and supported each other throughout all of the activities. We were Will's Warriors and he definitely stepped up to each and every challenge with some great ideas. Anna Barker was our Katniss Everdeen, such a great archer! I could really notice the improvement in communication skills by the end of the day!” Mr Warry wanted to give a special shout out to Eloise Handleigh - for her dedication and commitment to winning the team copious points in the Hells Holes challenge. Mrs Grimshaw was really proud of her group: Florence New showed herself as a true and natural leader on each and every event. Ivy Prutton pushed herself so hard and gave everything a go even when she really didn't want to! Henry Foster helped so much at the archery when no one else could do it and then his 'dead drop' off the wall. Freddie Rawlinson for many things, but for not helping at all as he was lifted and pulled over a seven foot wall!

At RVHS, we communicate by in a bid to get information to you quicker and more cost effectively. We found, however, our previous parental communication system did not give the functionality that people expect from smart phone apps today. So the school has invested in a new communication system call RS Connect Ed and with this comes a shiny new App.

MyEd is the free parent app that gives you a multitude of communication and information features to stay in touch with what is going on at school. The app gives you direct access to your child's attendance, timetable, absence records, achievements, behaviour and much, much more. You will also see that we update and change the information in the app as the school year moves along. Click here to see a short video about the app We are able to send you messages directly to the MyEd app relating to important information about your child's education and to remind you of events that are taking place at school. We can also embed links to regularly used systems, for example ParentPay & Doddle so you can keep everything in one place. You will receive a notification if we send you a message and there is no charge for the messages you send to us. The App can be downloaded by anyone and they will have access to information also available on our website. Only parents will be able to access their own student’s information as long as we have the email address and mobile number you are using to access the App. Everyone will be able to see image to the left.

But only parents of students in the school will be able to access this when clicking on the My Students tab. The MyEd app is available for both Apple iOS and Android devices and can be found using the links below: Step 1 - Go to your App Store Step 2 - Search for My Ed Step 3 - Download the Free app Apple iOS App Google Android App Once you have installed and opened MyEd, search for Roding Valley High School and follow the simple instructions to identify yourself. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you are having any problems and we will help you get set up. Follow us on: @rodingvalleyHS @humsrvhs @rodingvalleyPE RODING VALLEY DRAMA@rodingdrama

At RVHS, we use Show My Homework; an account has been created for you to keep up to date with your child’s homework progress from home.

What is ‘Show My Homework’? Show my Homework is a simple online solution for students and parents to view homework details and upcoming deadlines. Mobile apps and notifications ensure you always know what homework your child has and when it’s due. How to Log In?  Go to www.showmyhomework.co.uk/pin  Or you can download the app.  Enter your PIN details that you have been given in the letter provided by your school.

What are PINs? PINs are unique codes that ‘Show My Homework’ has assigned to each parent that allow us to confirm their identity on initial login. After logging in for the first time users will be asked to provide more memorable login details for future use. PINs are then only be used as a backup in case you forget these logins.

 Click ‘Log in’  Create a memorable password and enter your email address then click ‘Update you details’.

Students do not need a pin to be able to access their homework. They can gain access to their Show My Homework account though their Gmail account.

You are now able to access your account and view all the homework that has been set for your child. If yourself or your child experience any difficulties with using ‘Show my Homework’ or you no longer have your pin, please contact Miss Larkin: plarkin@rodingvalley.net

The Essex Child and Family Wellbeing Service (ECFWS) supports children, families, schools and communities to address current physical and emotional health, social, and financial issues that may affect the healthy development and future outcomes of young people. Each month, we promote and support specific local, national and international campaigns by providing education, advice and information to other organisations that can improve health and wellbeing for all. Our campaigns can be interactive with real-life practical learning examples, including web links to resources, which can be used in the classroom or at home. This month we are focusing our campaign on Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)and this includes linking into Sexual Health Week 16th to 22nd September. The theme for this year is sex, relationships and disability. To find out more please visit the Brook website. There is lots of information in this publication which would be really beneficial to share with your wider school community.

Family Wellbeing How can we talk to our children about difficult topics? The NSPCC recommend creating the right situation, for example, in a relaxed and neutral place like on a bike ride or in the car. To get the conversation started you could use a relevant character on TV or in a book, they provide suggestions on their website. It is important to also listen to your child and start by asking questions that do not just have ‘yes’ and ‘no’ answers. The National Autistic Society have many ideas on how to talk to your child about puberty, sex, sexuality, and relationships. A list of suggested books is also provided. The Department of Education is introducing compulsory Relationships Education for primary pupils and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) for secondary education from September 2020. Also, from September 2020 it will be compulsory for all schools to teach Health Education. To find out more please click here.
