RVHS Parent Bulletin Aspiration Respect

Endeavour

Week ending: Friday 20th October 2017 “Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere”. Chinese Proverb

Message from the Executive Headteacher. It has been very busy half term at RVHS and I have been very impressed with the work that has gone on around the school. In lessons, our focus has been on ensuring that there is high quality teaching and learning with staff working with our new ‘ACED’ approach in lessons: Assessment, Creativity, Engagement and Differentiation being the core elements of every successful lesson. The new positive attitude for learning programme has embedded itself very well and it is really great to see the very high number of students achieving so many achievement points. Outside of lessons, there has been a real focus on our extra-curricular and enrichment provision and, once again, it is great to see so many students attending clubs at lunchtime and after school. Our new build is progressing on time and it will not be very long before the actual building starts to take shape. The building will be open next September and will help provide additional capacity to the school as numbers rise and our Sixth Form grows. Our new AstroTurf also opened on time recently and is being used extensively in lessons, lunchtimes and after school. Our Open Mornings and Open Evening saw large numbers of prospective parents come to the school and the feedback we received was extremely positive. As well as the visitors to the site, it was great to see so many of our students help out either as tour guides or in subject areas on the Open Evening and they were outstanding ambassadors for the school. We were also pleased that our Progress 8 score following the summer examinations is above the national average. Progress 8 is the new measure of school accountability and a positive score is indicative of the hard work and determination shown by our students and staff in preparing for their examinations. As well as our new approach to teaching and learning, we have also launched Show My Homework this half term. Looking at the statistics on usage, it is pleasing to note how widely it is being used and hopefully parents are finding it easier to keep up to speed with what your children are doing for homework. We will also be launching our reporting system after half term and, again, this should be easier for parents to interpret how well your child is doing. Both of these changes were brought about as a result of feedback from parents at our Parents Forum and I would encourage all parents to attend if possible. The next meeting takes place on Monday 4th December.

Finally, I would just like to take this opportunity to thank all parents and carers for their continued support of the school this term. One of the key features of any successful school is the support of parents and carers and your continued support is greatly appreciated by the staff at the school. I hope everyone has a restful and enjoyable half term holiday and school resumes on Monday 30th October.

Careers Information Booklet The Essex Employment and Skills Board have produced a booklet called ‘What’s Your Thing’ this is a guide for careers and job opportunities in Essex. The booklet will be delivered to all Year 9 students in Essex and they will help inform and inspire students in the career choices they make by providing an insight into different roles available, the skills that are in demand and what salary they might expect to earn. The information focuses on seven priority sectors which contribute significantly to the local economy but are also facing significant skills shortages: 

Advanced Manufacturing & Engineering

Care

Construction

Finance & Insurance

Health

It, Digital & Creative

Logistics

These sectors have been identified as being really important for Essex because of their contribution to economic growth or because they support the well-being of residents. These sectors all have lots of job vacancies and great career pathways too. I encourage all parents and students to read the booklets not just in Year 9 to help them identify the wide range of careers available to them here in Essex: https://www.essexesb.co.uk/careers/careers-information-booklet-for-young-people

Future Chef Cooking Competition The Food & Nutrition department held their annual Future Chef Cooking Competition on Monday 16 October. All of our entrants were keen and ready to cook up a storm, and we had many fantastic dishes. All of the students worked hard to produce a dish worthy of a win and a chance to represent the school in the next round of the competition which is held in January.

A very well done to, Jessica Okaka, Hannah Ward, Abby Ward, Tommy Yeomans, Mehdi Pascoe and Amelia Martin.

Our winner was Abby Ward and Amelia Martin was a close second, both girls go through to the next round. Lastly, a big thank you also to our judge Mrs. Sargent.

School Communications We have been communicating by email for over a year now in a bid to get information to you quicker and more cost effectively. We found, however, our previous parental communication system did not give the functionality that people expect from smart phone apps today. So the school has invested in a new communication system call RS Connect Ed and with this comes a shiny new App. MyEd is the free parent app that gives you a multitude of communication and information features to stay in touch with what is going on at school. The app gives you direct access to your child's attendance, timetable, absence records, achievements, behaviour and much, much more. You will also see that we update and change the information in the app as the school year moves along. Click here to see a short video about the app We are able to send you messages directly to the MyEd app relating to important information about your child's education and to remind you of events that are taking place at school. We can also embed links to regularly used systems, for example Parent Pay & Doddle so you can keep everything in one place. You will receive a notification if we send you a message and there is no charge for the messages you send to us. The App can be downloaded by anyone and they will have access to information also available on our website Only parents will be able to access their own student’s information as long as we have the email address and mobile number you are using to access the App. Everyone will be able to see image to the left. But only parents of students in the school will be able to access this when clicking on the My Students tab.The MyEd app is available for both Apple iOS and Android devices and can be found using the links below: Step 1 - Go to your App Store Step 2 - Search for My Ed Step 3 - Download the Free app Apple iOS App Google Android App Once you have installed and opened MyEd, search for Roding Valley High School and follow the simple instructions to identify yourself. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you are having any problems and we will help you get set up.
