Last night we held the Sixth Form Open Evening and it was wonderful to see so many of our current Year 11s and their parents coming along to discuss their plans for next year. Initially there was a presentation in the Hall where I spoke about my vision for the school moving forward. Not only do I want Roding Valley High School to become the school of choice for Year 6 students and their parents, I also want us to be the school of choice for students Post 16. We have made a tremendous start to the Sixth Form and I am eager to keep up the momentum and see our students achieve great things. Mr Mammen, Deputy Head, explained about the competitive entry requirements that students will need to achieve if they are going to join us in Year 12 and Mr Harris, Head of Sixth Form, extolled the virtues of Post 16 study at Roding Valley and explained how we support each and every student to achieve their very best. The highlight of the evening for me, though, was the speeches from the four current Year 12 students. Lauren and Chloe Humphries, Kyle Johal and Matthew Tinker all spoke warmly about their first half term in the Sixth Form at Roding Valley. All four would have been warmly welcomed at any local Sixth Form as their GCSE grades are superb but I am delighted that they chose us. Indeed Kyle joined us from another school and was keen to state how impressed he's been with the welcome that he has received and the way the Sixth Form is set up. After the formal presentation in the Hall the students and parents circulated around the departments speaking to the A Level teachers and current Year 12s and 13s to get a good idea of the demands and the content of the individual courses. I really enjoyed listening in to these conversations and while the teachers were fantastic and enthusiastic about their subjects, there is no doubt that the students are the greatest ambassadors for our Sixth Form as they were delightful and incredibly keen to showcase their school. Finally I would like to mention that Matthew Tinker represented Epping Forest as part of the National Youth Parliament. This involved travelling to Westminster this morning to take part in a debate in the House of Commons presided over by the Speaker of the House, The Rt Hon John Bercow MP. Whilst I can imagine most young people would find this sort of arena rather intimidating, Matthew stood up to give his maiden speech. I have had the pleasure of seeing a recording of his words of wisdom where he speaks with passion about the future of the NHS. I think it's fair to say that he brought the house down as he spoke without notes with humour and verve and received a huge round of applause at the end. On Wednesday the Sixth Form led a Year 9 Study Skills Day, and discussed with Year 9s in small groups throughout the day the importance of building Study skills such as mind maps and revision cards. Educational visits We would like to inform you that the school has now moved to an on-line procedure for medical and consent forms for all educational visits. (apart from P.E fixtures). If your child is successful in gaining a place on a visit, an email will be sent to you from a company called Evolve (a national company that helps schools administer educational visits), along with our school form, that requests consent, medical details etc. This information is then sent directly to the school, where we are governed by data protection. Please ensure that these digital forms are promptly returned and accurately completed, as failure to do so may compromise your child's place on the trip. It is vitally important that the school holds current email addresses for parents/guardians. If you need to update or provide an email address, please inform the school office.

YEAR 10 PARENTS Please see below the generic timetable for the forthcoming Year 10 Examination Week along with a letter from Mr Patel on the next page. These examinations will take place under formal conditions for every subject area. Your son/daughter will receive an individual timetable from their Form Tutor during registration next week. Individual timetables will be printed on YELLOW paper. A further copy will also be emailed to all students and parents. Student's individual timetables hold vital information relevant to them personally, please encourage your son/daughter to take responsibility and look after their timetables. If timetables are lost, student’s can refer to the seating plans pinned up on the door at the Science Playground or alternatively, refer to the emailed version. Access to Water in School Parents, please be aware that the canteen has jugs of water available both during lunchtime and break time for all students to access. Bottled water is sold at all outlets Large bottle 50p Small bottle 25p If a student is overdrawn or has no money on their lunch account, they will always be sold water.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS….. Student Absence If your child is unable to attend School for any reason then please report their absence by phoning the school number by 9.30am, you must also ring in each day of your child’s absence.

Medical Appointments When possible please make sure you make any medical or dental appointments outside of school time. If this is not possible then please try to ensure that your child attends before and/or after their appointment Holidays in Term Time It is not school policy to authorise any holidays during term time except in exceptional circumstances. If you put in a holiday request a ‘Leave of Absence’ form must be completed (these are available at Student Reception). Please be aware if the absence is not authorised and the holiday is taken, the case may be referred to the Education Welfare Service who may issue a Penalty Notice for £120 (or £60 if paid within 21 days) to each parent for each child taken out of school.
