On Friday the 7th November Roding Valley High School hosted the Epping Forest District Parliamentary Debate. This is a highly prestigious occasion for the school and there was a tangible buzz of anticipation beforehand. The Roding Valley pair was made up of Hannah Smith and Olivia Tinker from Year 11 and they had been helped to prepare by an eager back-room team of students. I would like to commend the girls for their hard work before the event but more so for their superb performance throughout the debate. They delivered their speeches with great timing, clarity and humour and were able to get their argument across in a most compelling manner. They were also adept at interjecting in the speeches from the other teams and were most mature in their conduct. Both Hannah and Olivia deserve huge credit for the way that they represented the school and were only pipped to the post at the end by the team from Davenant who, it should be noted, were both Sixth Formers (one of whom won it while representing Roding Valley last year). Eleanor Laing, MP, chaired the debate and she was fulsome in her praise of both the students and the school for the way the evening was run. I would like to thank Ms Atkinson for the hard work that she put in helping the girls to prepare their arguments and the hours of practise that she oversaw. I must also thank Mr Murray for his planning of the evening and ensuring it all went smoothly, and finally to Ms Henrye and the rest of the catering team for putting on such a fine spread. On Friday 14th the Year 11 GCSE Music Concert took place and featured a wide range of performances. The students really threw themselves into it and a good time was had by all. I would like to thank Mr Savage for his work in running the concert and Mr Argyrakis for helping the students to prepare and practise for the event. The students deserve a great deal of credit as there are few things as brave as standing up on stage and singing or playing an instrument in front of an audience. Well done to all concerned.
