Parent bulletin 16 12 16

Page 1

It has been a really busy but festive week in school. We were particularly festive on Tuesday when 5 performances of Aladdin were given by our hardworking students. First thing they performed to local primary schools, followed by performances to Y7, 8 and 9 and ending with a triumphant performance to parents, families, governors and staff in the evening. Please see more information later in the bulletin. The kitchen staff also worked incredibly hard to serve over 800 Christmas dinners to students and staff on Tuesday as well. Mrs Henrye’s kitchen team were ably assisted by lots of elves (i.e. teachers dressed up!) including myself. A good time was had by all. Y11 students attended a Study Skills Day on Wednesday which helped them to prepare for their pre-public exams which start week beginning 23rd January 2017. Students were given advice on how to revise, methods of revision, how to write a revision timetable (which should help them to plan over the holiday) and were given access to some excellent Apps for English and Maths revision. The day was ably supported by our 6th form students who gave lots of hints and tips on how to get the most out of revision. It is the deadline for 6th Form applications as soon as we return in the New Year, Friday 13th January, so make sure that all applications are given lots of attention over the holidays. Y12 exams remain ongoing until the end of term and the Y13 assessments commence on Monday 9th January 2017. On a lighter note, staff and 6th form have enjoyed wearing their Christmas jumpers and the school have raised lots of money. More details to follow. Our KS4 awards evening is being held on Tuesday 21st December. We look forward to welcoming invited guests for this lovely occasion. Please note later in the bulletin some important information about changes to the local bus routes which has been shared with the school Just a reminder that school finishes on Wednesday 21st December at 12.20pm and starts again on Monday 9th January 2017 at normal time. With kind regards Sharon Jenner Acting Headteacher

Parents, relatives, students, staff and governors all had the pleasure of watching a great performance of Aladdin on Tuesday evening. It was AWESOME - a real triumph ! The students were amazing...the choreography was fab and the fun rolled on and on. Truly well done to all concerned, your hard work paid off. A special thank you to Mrs Sargent, Matthew Tinker, Lillie Butler and Thisbe Barnett who directed the Panto ... what a team. Thank you to everyone who helped in any way to make it such a success. A great night for Roding Valley High School.

Well done !

Y11 Study Skills Day Dear all, thought I would share some of the pictures from the Sixth Form section of the Year 11 DDD. Our focus was student led revision techniques. The year 12s in the main led the sessions and where possible we had students discussing strategies that worked for them. The strategies that the Sixth Form reinforced were:  the use of past papers and examiner reports  queue cards on a keyring to revise on the move  the use of menonmics  the use of mind maps  the use of exam board revision books  the use of YouTube for examboard playlists  the use of a revision timetable Mr Harris Head of 6th Form

This will be our seventh consortium careers fair held at Epping Forest College, every year it has been a very professional and successful event and this year there are already over 65 exhibitors attending including lots of new national and local employers as well as local sixth forms, colleges and universities. IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT CHANGES TO LOCAL BUS ROUTES Debden and Loughton in Essex are currently linked to North East London by TfL bus routes 20, 167, 397 and 549. Essex County Council provided funding towards the operation of routes 20 and 167, however this stopped in April 2016. During June and July 2016 we consulted on proposed changes to bus route 167 in response to this loss of funding. We have now analysed these responses. We received 743 responses from members of the public and 15 responses from stakeholders. We also received a petition opposing the proposals which was signed by 2,547 people. From 11 March 2017, we will introduce the following changes: 

Route 167 will no longer run between Loughton station and Debden station



A new route 677 will be introduced providing a limited stop service between Ilford and schools in Debden using double deck buses. On school day mornings this will stop at all existing bus stops from Ilford to Buckhurst Hill station. After Buckhurst Hill station it will operate on an express basis, stopping only at Loughton station (for Roding Valley High School), Davenant Foundation School, Debden Park High School and Debden station. There will be one journey from Ilford to Debden on schoolday mornings and a return journey in the afternoon to Ilford making the same stops.

No changes are proposed to route 20, which will continue to serve the section of route between Loughton station and Debden station. Further information For further details of the above changes, a summary of the consultation responses, and our responses to issues raised, please go to https://consultations.tfl.gov.uk/buses/167/ Liaison with schools We do appreciate your concerns about the changes which were included in the consultation summary. We considered these in our response to issues raised report. We will liaise with the three main schools affected on the most appropriate timings for the new 677 service which works best for all. We will also liaise with them to provide advance notice and publicity of the changes. Yours sincerely

Darek Podwiazka, Senior Consultation Manager, Transport for London
