Parent Bulletin 23 6 17

It has been a very hot week in school, summer seems to have well and truly arrived !! Unfortunately this did mean the postponement of the whole school Sports Day on Wednesday when the thermometer hit the low 30 degrees! The new date for the event is Friday 7th July and we hope for more reasonable temperatures on the day. On Monday Mrs Martin, our librarian, took out our “Reading Millionaire” students to the Harry Potter Studios as a reward for their prolific reading. Yesterday, Thursday 22nd June, saw the Roding Valley Bake Off being held after school. 20 students took part and the judges happily munched through lots of different cupcakes to decide who the winner was. There were so many different varieties that it made it very hard to choose between them. There were two other trips which went out today, one was to the Anglia Ruskin University who were holding a National Women in Engineering Day event. Ms Patel took some of our Year 9 students along to the day which is dedicated to raising the profile and celebrating the achievements of women in engineering and is one of just some of the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) events organised this term. It was also the trip to St Omer today. Mrs Chambers and her team have taken 41 Year 7 students off to the lovely town of St Omer to practice their French language skills, and to do a bit of shopping too! The Parents’ Forum on Monday 3rd July (at 6pm) will be concentrating on the two new initiatives launched by RVHS recently: “Show My Homework” and “MyEd”. These have been launched to meet the concerns of parents in regards to communication and homework which were raised in previous Forums and in the Parent survey. I have today sent out a “Show my Homework” parent launch letter, a copy of which is further on in the bulletin. This system will allow the parent to see what homework has been set electronically and makes homework very transparent to all. Please do come along on the 3rd July to see how you can get the best out of both of these systems. Because the whole of next Monday’s session will be taken up with this, another Parents’ Forum will be held on Monday 17th July (6pm) this session will be hosted by Mr Banks and myself. The weather forecast for next week is a lot more temperate so the relaxation of the wearing of blazers stops today. We will expect all the students to be wearing their blazers on Monday. A reminder that on Thursday 29th June, Year 7 will be participating in a sponsored fun run to support our partner school, Greater Joy, in Zambia. As Mr Banks said in last week’s bulletin, it is a great opportunity to promote the value of exercise, education for all and going the ‘extra mile’ for the benefit of others. All Year 7 students will participate so please do sponsor them, we appreciate your ongoing support. If you have a child in Year 10, please note that it is the Year 10 Exam Week next week. This is an important milestone on their final journey towards their GCSEs. Please do ensure that adequate revision is being completed at home, students have previously been issued with full revision guides and practise papers. Next week we say goodbye to our Year 11s, they have a special Leavers Assembly on Wednesday the 28th June and on that evening they are having a Prom at Woolston Manor. This is always an event to behold, beautiful dresses, smart suits, amazing or quirky cars (buses) and a sense of growing maturity amongst the students. For the majority this is not a final good bye as they will be back with us Monday 3rd July for our Sixth Form Induction Day. Have a lovely weekend Sharon Jenner, Head of School

Parents of Year 10 Mock Interview Day Thursday 13th July 2017 Students will all receive details of where their interview will be by the end of next week. For those students who are going out for an interview with an employer at their premises could you please ensure the parental consent reply slip has been returned to your son/daughters form tutor. As a reminder, on the day students are not required to wear school uniform, they should dress as they would for an interview, however please do not buy anything special for the interview as their uniform is very smart and will be ideal to wear. It is a normal school day, students will attend their interview at the specified time and return to their lesson afterwards. If they are going out for an interview they will need to sign in and out at student reception. We have a huge variety of employers attending this year and this is a great opportunity for students to learn interview techniques and to develop their networking and communication skills in preparation for their future careers. If you require any further information or advice please contact me. Kind regards Mrs Mason Careers Development Manager dmason@rodingvalley.net Twitter: Follow @RVHS_Careers to keep up to date with our department.

Harry Potter Studio Tour Reward Trip On Monday we took a group of Year 7 and Year 8 students to visit Warner Bros’ Harry Potter Studio Tour. This trip rewarded students who had notched up over a million words read on the Accelerated Reader literacy programme. Students were able to tour the studios where the Harry Potter films were made and see many of the wonderful sets, costumes and artefacts that appear on screen. Highlights included the Hogwarts Express, the Great Hall, Diagon Alley and the Forbidden Forest, where Aragog, the giant spider, and his relations put in an appearance! Our students got the chance to try out the Weasleys’ flying car, fly on a broomstick and sample a butter beer (which wasn’t to everyone’s taste, if we’re honest). On an extremely hot day we were particularly glad that the studios’ air conditioning was working. A magical day was had by all. RVHS Bake Off Challenge Roding Valley hosted another Bake Off Challenge this week in the Food & Nutrition Department. Despite the soaring temperatures outside, the department warmed up even further for the 20 competitors to bake and decorate some outstandingly good cupcakes. Many thanks to our judges Miss Dyer, Mr Tisdale, Miss Williams and Mrs Sabin, who took to their task well and spent an enjoyable hour of tasting to judge on appearance, texture and flavour of all the cupcakes‌ It was a very close competition with all final products of a high standard, and the winners finally declared as first place to Sarah Bagshaw (9Q), second place to Ellie Blundy (9U) and third to Martha Rose Collins (7V). Well done to all competitors, and thanks once again to all parents/guardians for your continued support.
