Another busy week comes to a close and it will be October before we know it. The School Governors have spent the whole day in school today, Friday, and have been visiting lessons, meeting staff and students and seeing how the school operates. I am delighted that they have had such a positive experience and have been full of praise for the students and the staff. They have commented on how smart the students look and how sensibly and maturely they conduct themselves. It really is a calm, purposeful environment and this is exactly what I want to promote. In lessons the students are engaged and are encouraged to take responsibility for their learning which is crucial if they are to achieve highly. On Thursday evening we hosted the inaugural Year 12 Parent Information Evening which was very well attended and allowed Mr Harris, Mrs Jenner and myself to have the opportunity to ensure that the students fully understand what lies ahead in terms of their studies and their opportunities moving forward. These students already need to be considering Universities and future courses and I am delighted that Mrs Mason is on hand to provide such excellent guidance and support in this sphere. I would like to take this opportunity to add my congratulations to Alice Bonning from last year's Year 11. This week she won a special award at the PiXL National Awards for showing outstanding determination in overcoming significant obstacles to achieve success at GCSE. We were thrilled that her resilience has been rewarded in this way and wish her every success in the future. I would also like to congratulate Will Cain and Olivia Tinker who have been appointed as Head Boy and Head Girl respectively. There was a strong field of contenders who made a presentation and were interviewed and it was testament to our new Sixth Form that there was so much competition for the positions. I am confident that Will and Olivia will be excellent ambassadors for the school and I look forward to working with them and the Sixth Form Committee. Next Thursday, the 1st October, we have the Key Stage 3 Awards evening and I very much look forward to seeing many of you in attendance. It is always an enjoyable event and this year should be a very positive experience for all. One point of order for parents who drop their sons and daughters off at the start of the school day. May I please request that if you are dropping your children off please do not do so on Alderton Hill where there are barriers at the side of the road. This is incredibly dangerous and I fear for the safety of our students in the traffic. There is usually more space on Brook Road so if you are able to let them out there instead that would be helpful. J Luck Headteacher

GCSE Health and Social Care Calling all parents/guardians that work in Health Care, Social Care or the Early Years Sector! As part of GCSE Health and Social Care, year 10 students are required to investigate three care roles. It would be great if we could have parents/guardians that work in any of the above sectors to speak to the students about their roles and what their job involves. Roles that students have expressed an interest in already are: midwife, dentist, nursery nurse, physiotherapist and social worker. If this is something you might be able to help with could you contact me via email on sbarrett@rodingvalley.net or ask to speak to Mrs Barrett or Mrs Abbott if you telephone the school. Thanks in advance. Mrs Barrett Health and Social Care

Alice Bonning Alice Bonning left Roding Valley High School last year. Alice was diagnosed with Scoliosis aged four and has had to undergo numerous operations in her life and she missed the majority of Year 10 due to this. Alice was nominated for a PiXL Success Award by RVHS and, on Wednesday 23rd September, she attended an evening of celebration at Westminster Central Hall for the presentation. We are please to let you know that Alice received a Special Award from PiXL for showing outstanding determination in overcoming significant obstacles in achieving commendable success in her GCSE examinations. She achieved one A*, seven A's and three B's for her GCSEs despite missing out on so much schooling.
