It has been another really busy, but exciting, week in school. The school has celebrated Shakespeare’s birthday in assemblies all week. Year 7 spent a day enjoying a variety of engaging and inspiring workshops. They travelled from room to room bursting with ideas and creativity whilst working through different Shakespearean texts. Our Sixth Form students also helped run two workshops and filmed the day which was a huge success and our Year 7s truly enjoyed. Thank you Miss Bates and the English Faculty for organising such a fun and challenging event. Please see more photos later in the bulletin. We had more sporting success to celebrate this week when our Year 8 Football team won the District Cup Final this week beating St Marks 3 –1. The game was played at the Metropolitan Police Club in Chigwell. The boys played to victory through sun, rain, sleet and hailstones. The goals were scored by Edward Johnstone, Ali Springer and Nathan Walters. Well done to Mr Hudgell and his team! Please see the photo later in the bulletin. 120 Roding Valley students from Year 7 and Year 8 took part in the National Maths Challenge. We expect a good set of results as our Maths Mastery programme has a strong focus on the core skills required to be successful in the challenge. In the last round we had a number of students progress through to the intermediate stage which put them in the top 25% of mathematicians in the country. A group of Year 9 students supported Mr Jones today when we hosted a Year 3 and Year 4 Athletics event here at Roding Valley High School. It was great to see so many younger students taking part in competition and to see our students supporting, leading and officiating the event. It was great success. The Year 7s continue with their Zambia Bake Sales under the watchful eye of Mr Cocker. They are doing a great job raising money for this fantastic cause. Please can I remind parents that next week is also the Year 7 assessment week. Our Art and Photography students started off the first of the GCSE exams this week. Students are now working really hard towards their GCSEs and A levels and timetables can be found later on in the bulletin. We have agreed that the last day for Year 11 students will be Thursday the 18th May, after which they will be on study leave. Details will be sent out separately. The Year 11 Prom will be held on the evening of the 28th June at Woolston Manor. Finally, please can I remind parents that, when collecting students from Brook Road, you must not park on the zig-zag lines. Please do show some consideration for the neighbours but primarily for the safety of the students. Please do have a wonderful bank holiday weekend. Mrs S Jenner Head of School
The Year 8 Football team managed to win the District Cup Final this week by beating St Marks 31 at Met Police, Chigwell. After dominating possession throughout the game - and encountering sun, rain, sleet and hail we managed to wrap up the victory in the second half with goals from Edward Johnstone, Ali Springer and Nathan Walters. Thank you for all who attended and showed support, and also a huge thank you to John Ryan for his commitment to PE and driving the team to away fixtures this season. 6th Form Preparation for Public Examinations Early indications in terms of student progress are extremely positive. The results from the last PPE results show that in the main students are on track to achieve their target grades. Students should now make sure they are sufficiently preparing for the next weeks PPE’s, ensuring that they are revising the complete specifications so that the results of the PPE’s can give a better reflection of the Summer Examinations. Students should now be:
working through 2-3 hours of revision per night
working on one past paper per week at the very least
using Power Hours with their revision books and applying the theory of “an hour a chapter”
watching YouTube Playlists where possible
making a complete revision timetable from now until the end of the Summer Exams
