RVHS Parent Bulletin Aspiration Respect Endeavour Week ending: Friday 26th April 2019 “Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.”

Message from the Head of School

I trust that everyone had an enjoyable Easter break, especially with the warm weather we experienced last weekend. It has been a pleasure to be back in school this week; the students have come back focused and ready to embark on the new term. Thank you for your support with our dress code as our students are all looking incredibly smart in their uniforms. I am sure you will join me in thanking our teaching staff who came in over the Easter holidays and offered study and support sessions to our GCSE and A level students. There was a fantastic attendance to these sessions and our students have said that they were of real value to them at this stage. This week we were incredibly proud to host the West Essex Regional ‘Speak out Challenge’, I would like to say that all of the18 students from the fifteen other schools that took part in this event were amazing. Congratulations to Mia Ali and Charlotte Copeman, who won 1st and 3rd place and wish all of the winning students luck in the upcoming national finals in July. Please see the article further on in this bulletin. Roding Valley High has also celebrated sporting success this week with our Year 8 Football team winning the Harlow and West Essex Cup, with a score of 3-2 against Passmores Academy. Well done to the team for all of their hard work and commitment. Some of our brilliant Year 9s had the opportunity to experience a lecture led by Mr Cocker and Mrs Preston on the history of the Middle East. This is now the third in our ongoing programme of academic lectures to KS3 students. It is great for our younger students to have an opportunity to experience what it feels like to sit in university style lecture and broaden their horizons.

Over the past weeks, our staff have been focusing the Year 11 students on a different revision technique each week, this has proven to be a great success and very effective. We have now included out Year 10’s in this initiative. This week they have been learning all about the Buzan Mind Maps. Over the coming weeks our students will learn different strategies to help them improve learning and revision, such as ‘Flip and Fold’ and ‘Cornell Notes’. I would like to send my thanks to Haslers Chartered Accountants, who have agreed to support our school over the next year with the latest STEM programme. The STEM activities are designed to encourage our students to pursue careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) related academic fields and are supported by The Learning Partnership and social learning platform, Dendrite. If you would like to learn more, please visit: http://www.thelearningpartnership.com/ You will also find included within this bulletin details of our Summer Extra-curricular and Enrichment activities, links to useful Information can also be found further on in this bulletin. I appreciate that the evenings are now pleasant and light, but please can I ask that all parents ensure that their sons/ daughters go straight home at the end of the school day. I would reiterate that the majority of our students are an absolute delight but where there are large groups of students congregating it can appear intimidating to the local community. Have a lovely Weekend! Mrs S Jenner Headteacher

On Wednesday, we were delighted and honoured to host the Jack Petchey ‘Speak out Challenge’ West Essex Final. Congratulations to our students, Mia Ali for winning first place and becoming the Regional Champion and to Charlotte Copeman for winning 3rd Place with their fantastic speeches. This event is the world’s biggest youth speaking event with over £15,000 in prizes up for grabs. There was eighteen other candidates from around the West Essex Region representing their schools, each hoping to win the Regional Final for a place at the Grand National Finals in July. Every year, over 18,000 Year 10 students from all over the country compete against one another from 550 schools in 37 regions to win the grand Prize of £2000 for themselves and £3000 for their school from The Jack Petchey Foundation. Students had the opportunity to speak in front of a live audience about a topic of their choice; something that they feel passionate about or a topic that is dear to them. The standard of all of the students taking part was outstanding and we wish all of the qualifying students luck in the national finals in July.

Good luck to our Year 10 girls, who on Thursday went on their Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award Assessment Expedition to the Chilterns.

The Year 7 Residential trip is ready to go ahead at the Mersea outdoor centre and thanks to those parents who have completed their payments. Message from Miss Williams Welcome back! I hope you all had a wonderful break and that Easter was a great rest as we now look forward to the term. This busy year is flying by and next term will be no different. Just to mention that there will be upcoming important assessments week beginning Monday the 20th of May. Please ensure your child knows what they will be assessed on and what skills are needed. All revision material will be placed on relevant platforms such as Google classroom and Show my homework in advance. I am and have always been proud of how our year 8 students have coped with and conducted themselves during assessments and exams and have every confidence that they will be rewarded for their efforts in their results. I was delighted to have watched our Year 8 boy’s football team win the Harlow & West Essex District Final yesterday, against Passmores Academy. A very big congratulations to all the boys who have played in any of the games that have led to such a triumph. I want to also wish our under 13 girls team all the very best of luck next week Thursday who are playing in the Essex cup final against Shenfield High school. A very tough team but our girls are hardworking and talented players who will give it their all. Could you please encourage your child to log on to PiXL edge and add their activities which they have been completing in order to obtain their qualification. The aim of the programme is to equip students with the skills, knowledge and competencies, distinct from their academic work that will help them succeed in the future. The skills that they are working on are Leadership, Organisation, Resilience, Initiative and Communication. This qualification will be a great addition to their school CV filled with their accomplishments.

Well done to our Year 8 Football team, who this week won their match against Passmore, scoring a winning 3-2, this takes our team to the Harlow and West Essex Final. Congratulations to our team:  Coby Mizzi (GK) (8T)  Archie Sherrin (8Q)  Callum McCullagh (8S)  Aston Watson – Weaver (8R)  Bailey Allen (8Q)  Sonny Binet (8R)  Harry Hopkins (8V)  Freddie Edwards (8V)  Toby Blake (8R)

Message from Mr Ryan Welcome back to the summer term at Roding Valley. It is lovely to see the students looking so well rested and ready for the next 5 weeks. I would ask that in preparation for the hot weather to come that you look at the uniform policy on the school website just to avoid any confusion over what is allowed. The 40/40 lectures continue this term and on Thursday Mr Cocker and Ms Preston delivered a thoroughly engaging lecture. We also had students go to the theatre to watch a production of 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night'. It was a pleasure to receive such positive feedback about the way the year 9 students behaved. Options will be released within the next three weeks. We will keep you informed of all the changes that are being made and if there are any concerns please don't hesitate to contact me.

Theme of the Week! Next week in Assembly, our students will be looking at Beliefs and Festivals - we will also be celebrating student successes.
