RVHS Parent Bulletin Aspiration Respect
Endeavour
Week ending: Friday 11th May 2018 “Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.”
Message from the Head of School I trust that everyone in our school community enjoyed the glorious bank holiday. It has been a busy, if short week here at Roding Valley High School and today our Year 12s started their study leave. It is hard to believe that the Year 11s only have one week left with us on a full time basis, GCSE and AS exams officially start on Monday. Good luck to all our students and please refer later in the bulletin to specific messages and revision tips. Please also refer to our website: https://www.rodingvalley.net/current-parents/how-you-canhelp-your-child/ Please note that transition day into our Sixth Form is on Friday 29th June. Thank you to all the Year 10 parents who attended the Parents’ Evening last night. There was a great turnout with nearly 80% of our parents in attendance. It was an incredibly positive evening and our school is lucky to have such supportive parents. On that note, the PTA still has pitches available for their Shopping and Pamper evening to be held on Friday 15th June, 7pm to 10pm in the main hall. If you know anyone who would like to sell items or complete treatments during the evening; please ask them to contact Natalie Sellears nsellears@rodingvalley.net Pitches are £10. Your support would be greatly appreciated; all money raised will be used to benefit all students at our school. Our Year 12 Charity Executives have just held auditions for the ‘Rodings Got Talent’ show which will be held later in the year; it was great to hear that so many students from across the year groups put themselves forward to participate. There were bands, singers, magicians and dancers; it should be a lot of fun and they hope to raise money for charities and good causes. Their chosen charities are: GOSH, Brain Tumour Charity and Cancer Research. They are also raffling a West Ham signed shirt. They are organising the majority themselves; another example of excellent student leadership.
There was further success for the school at this week’s ‘Speak out Challenge’. Thank you to Miss Hanlon for working with the students and a massive congratulation to Florence New (Year 10) placed 3rd in the West Essex finals. Roding Valley has placed for the third year running! Miss Hanlon said, ‘Florence did incredibly well and the standard of speakers was the highest I’ve seen. Aliya Silverstone was the MC for the night and did the school proud. Teachers and organisers were complimenting her on the way out saying how she had been the best MC for the years that they had seen’.

Following on from the success of the Democracy Day and the Epping Forest Debate, Eleanor Laing, MP has invited a number of our students to visit the Houses of Parliament on Tuesday. This is a great opportunity for our students selected. Our students have enjoyed using the new 3G pitch this week in their PE lessons, it is a fantastic new facility for all the students to have use of. Very few schools have access to such large and modern 3G pitches. A Bronze Duke of Edinburgh trip goes out this weekend. If you would like further details, please do contact Courtney Edwards cedwards@rodingvalley.net All parents are invited to the Parent Forum on Monday 14th May. At this session we will showcase and be explaining some of the principles of Maths Mastery, which is now embedded in our curriculum. It is having a positive impact on the attainment in Maths and the students who have studied Maths Mastery are far better equipped to answer the problem solving questions posed in the revised 9-1 Maths GCSE. The forum will be in the Sixth Form Centre at 6pm. I will again reiterate that the vast majority of our students are brilliant and amazing; but there are always a handful of students who want to jeopardise our good standing in the community. Please do ensure that your child travels home directly after school and is not hanging around the station area after school hours, especially in our school uniform. There are some undesirable characters who hang around in this area and I would not want our students associated with them. As always, I appreciate your continued support in this matter and if there are any issue, then please do hesitate to bring them to my attention. I have also been asked by the local Health Authority to make you aware of an outbreak of Measles in the local area. Please read the advice leaflet later on in this bulletin. Have a good weekend Mrs. S Jenner Head of School

Our year 7 students will be undergoing school internal assessments next week. These assessments are important for the students and for us as a school. The assessments are focused on finding out the knowledge, understanding and skills that students have developed. Students should be using some of their time at home each evening to prepare for their assessments. Year 7 students should be completing the equivalent of between 45 to 60 minutes of homework per night. Revision and preparation for the assessments should fall broadly within these expectations, and will be supported by structured tasks from class teachers that you can find on show my homework. While we want students to take their assessments seriously, we do not want them to be the causes of undue stress or pressure so please encourage your child to just try their best and talk to their teacher if they are finding revision difficult to manage.
Representatives from the Bushcraft Company will be coming to our school on Thursday the 7th June in the Main Hall between 6pm and 7pm. They will be discussing the residential experience including activities taking place, food and sleeping arrangements. Lastly, they will be answering your questions. It will be a great opportunity to find out more and have your questions answered by the team. Mrs F Williams, Year 7 YPL

Hi, I’m Zak Smith, and I wanted to be a youth councillor because I felt it provided an opportunity to help improve our local area and make it more enjoyable. With this freedom, I felt I could contribute to new projects within the community, such as addressing bullying or helping decrease the amount of litter on the streets. I was therefore thrilled when I received the message stating that I was to become a youth councillor, as I felt it was an open window of opportunity, where I could make all my ideas a reality. I was also looking forward to meeting new people, who may share the same interests as me, and to get the chance to experience what a real council feels like. I also know that various skills can be obtained from being in the youth council, such as public speaking, self-confidence, and the ability to familiarise and socialise with new people. I feel that these are very important skills to possess, which can be applied to future careers or universities. I understand that most universities and careers encourage people to think critically and independently, and I believe that being part of the youth council environment will help me develop these traits, so I can apply them in the future. I also wanted to be a youth councillor as a result of my interests. I am very interested in debating and public speaking, and recently won the best speaker award for a debate competition at Harrows school. I also like to socialising, and enjoy familiarising myself with different people. I feel that both of these can be applied to the youth council, and can make it a really enjoyable experience. And therefore, I am very excited to begin attending the youth council, and hope many other students will apply in the future. Zak Smith 8U I have always wanted to be seen in a different light and exceed people’s expectation of me. The youth council was an opportunity I have worked towards this since I heard about it in year 7 and saw it as a starting point for my ambitions of obtaining a job in law and possibly joining a political party as an MP. My target is at least be a candidate for the role of Prime minister and if am lucky to win the election. As an Epping Forest Youth Councilor, I am looking forward to be working alongside the other Councilors as well as my fellow school pupils to try and achieve changes on a large scale where schools could be seen in a better picture. Some of the changes I am looking to make will coordinate with uniform and the reduction of homework. I am simply asking for the support of pupils to make a change. Daniel Mehr 8Q

The weather is getting warmer which can only mean that exam season is finally upon us! Students' behaviour in the public exams has so far been impeccable despite it being such a tough time for them. Now is the time that they need the most support and encouragement to simply do their best and to bounce back when things get tough, as they inevitably will. We are encouraging students to have a regular bedtime and to eat breakfast. Their subject teachers will be letting them know about pre-exam sessions which they can attend for final reassurances. The students have prepared and revised, and so should feel confident in sitting these examinations, having said that; students should continue their revision every day until their final exam takes place. Teaching Year 11 myself; it is always on my mind that there is a careful balance between ensuring revision is being taken seriously and not over-working and over-pressurising. This is something we should all bear in mind and a little laughter can go a long way in relieving the stresses of hard work. I would like to take this opportunity to say "GOOD LUCK!" to all the Year 11 in the coming weeks.

At RVHS, we use Show My Homework; an account has been created for you to keep up to date with your child’s homework progress from home.
What is ‘Show My Homework’? Show my Homework is a simple online solution for students and parents to view homework details and upcoming deadlines. Mobile apps and notifications ensure you always know what homework your child has and when it’s due.
How to Log In? Go to www.showmyhomework.co.uk/pin What are PINs? PINs are unique codes that ‘Show My Homework’ has assigned to each parent that allow us to confirm their identity on initial login. After logging in for the first time users will be asked to provide more memorable login details for future use. PINs are then only be used as a backup in case you forget these logins.
Or you can download the app. Enter your PIN details that you have been given in the letter provided by your school. Click ‘Log in’ Create a memorable password and enter your email address then click ‘Update you details’.
Students do not need a pin to be able to access their homework. They can gain access to their Show My Homework account though their Gmail account.
You are now able to access your account and view all the homework that has been set for your child. If yourself or your child experience any difficulties with using ‘Show my Homework’ or you no longer have your pin, please contact Mrs. Hodges: jhodges@rodingvalley.net

What is DODDLE? Doddle provides students with access to thousands of engaging, formative resources and guides students through the curriculum. Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature. Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision. Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned. These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.
Find out how to create a Doddle Parent account and then link that account to your child with this short video:
We have also included a link to a very useful guide on how to view your child's due and submitted homework:

School Communications: We have been communicating by email for over a year now in a bid to get information to you quicker and more cost effectively. We found, however, our previous parental communication system did not give the functionality that people expect from smart phone apps today. So the school has invested in a new communication system call RS Connect Ed and with this comes a shiny new App.
MyEd is the free parent app that gives you a multitude of communication and information features to stay in touch with what is going on at school. The app gives you direct access to your child's attendance, timetable, absence records, achievements, behaviour and much, much more. You will also see that we update and change the information in the app as the school year moves along. Click here to see a short video about the app We are able to send you messages directly to the MyEd app relating to important information about your child's education and to remind you of events that are taking place at school. We can also embed links to regularly used systems, for example ParentPay & Doddle so you can keep everything in one place. You will receive a notification if we send you a message and there is no charge for the messages you send to us. The App can be downloaded by anyone and they will have access to information also available on our website Only parents will be able to access their own student’s information as long as we have the email address and mobile number you are using to access the App. Everyone will be able to see image to the left. But only parents of students in the school will be able to access this when clicking on the My Students tab.The MyEd app is available for both Apple iOS and Android devices and can be found using the links below: Step 1 - Go to your App Store Step 2 - Search for My Ed Step 3 - Download the Free app Apple iOS App Google Android App Once you have installed and opened MyEd, search for Roding Valley High School and follow the simple instructions to identify yourself. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you are having any problems and we will help you get set up.
