RVHS Parent Bulletin Aspiration Respect Endeavour Week ending: Friday 12th January 2018 “Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people that prepare for it today”. Malcolm X

Message from the Head of School. Welcome to the parent bulletin of 2018, I would like to begin by wishing everyone a very Happy New Year and welcome all of our students back for the new term. I can report that it has been a very positive first week back in school. Our Year 11 students have been excellent in their PPE exams, I am proud to say that their conduct has been exemplary and their effort fantastic. To allow our students the time to focus on their PPEs, we have taken the decision to extend the deadline for Sixth Form applications from the 15th January to Tuesday 23rd January. Can I also take the opportunity to remind those who enjoy Mathematics and are at a high level of ability that we will be offering A Level Further Mathematics alongside the standard A Level. Rest assured that we have the staff who have the experience of teaching this qualification and achieving the highest grades. Furthermore, we will be extending the offer of the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ – worth half an A Level). The EPQ gives A Level students excellent preparation for university level study and provides additional points for their UCAS application to universities. Students can refer to the EPQ in their UCAS personal statements and at interview to demonstrate some of the qualities that top universities are looking for. Our continued excellent relationship with Debden Park High School (DPHS) within the Epping Forest 6 (EF6) Consortium means that we can offer a very wide selection of A Levels. Students from DPHS currently come here to study Economics due to our expert teaching, whilst our Year 13 Drama students are studying there. This working consortium provides excellent opportunities to all students within our schools. We do teach predominantly A Level but you may have seen that we will also be offering BTECs in IT and Sport. The BTEC in Sport can be taken as an Extended Diploma which is equivalent to 3 A Levels or as a Diploma which is equivalent to 2 A levels and would be studied alongside an A level. Students have the opportunity to study further BTECs at Epping St Johns via the EF6 Consortium in conjunction with A Levels at Roding Valley. . To complement this we offer outstanding careers guidance and pastoral support, the majority of our current students have applied for either University or Higher Level apprenticeships. Last year 95 % achieved their first place university choice including many at Russell Group Universities. Our new build is progressing well; please look at our website for the first 100 days video; https://www.rodingvalley.net/parents/new-building-2018/

Once complete; students and staff will have access to a brand new library, Sixth Form Study Centre and classrooms. We will be updating the videos throughout the next few months

Last night was the Year 9 Parents’ Evening, thank you to all those who attended and supported their child at this very important stage in their education. Year 9 students are about to choose their GCSE Options and will be receiving their personalised packs prior to the Options evening on Thursday 8th February. The process will be fully explained at this evening and in student assemblies beforehand. We do have dedicated pathways to ensure maximum student potential based on their personal ability profile. Please can I ask all parents to take their sons/ daughters to the Careers Fest on Thursday 25th January. This event is aimed at Year 9 to 13 students. It is a not to be missed event in the school calendar. Our Careers Fest is taking place at Epping Forest College. This is part of our careers programme to ensure that our students are given a comprehensive range of post 16 information. There a will be a large variety of Employers and Educational Exhibitors attending this event. For our Year 9 students, this will be an opportunity to look at their future career pathways and help with their upcoming Option Choices. For our Years 10 - 13 students; it will allow them to investigate their next steps. This even will be a fantastic opportunity for our students to gain the information they need, to network and get contacts for future work experience. I would encourage all students to attend as this is always a really successful and well attended event organised by our Careers Advisor; Mrs Mason, in conjunction with other schools. Many thanks to the majority of parents who have returned their child to school ready for the new year, fully equipped and in the correct uniform. Our uniform is what defines us in the local community and helps to support the good name of the school. Please refer to our uniform policy, students are expected to wear black leather shoes, trainers are not permitted except on medical grounds. If this is the case, then they are issued with a medical card which must be shown when asked. Please also contact the school if there are other extenuating circumstances. If not, then your child will be sanctioned and home informed. Please can I also remind parents that our Behaviour Policy covers the schools expectations on behaviour of students on their way to, from and during school. This means that any behaviour that falls below our expectations will be dealt with as detailed in our Behaviour Policy. The school will not tolerate any behaviour outside of school that brings our reputation into disrepute. Please can I ask that you speak to your child regarding this matter to ensure that they understand our expectations. Students should be travelling home at the end of the school day and for safety should not be congregating around the station area. I will take the opportunity to wish everybody in our school community a very Happy New Year and look forward to the term ahead.

Parents of Year 9 to Year 13: Date for your diary

With only a few weeks to go we are very excited for our forthcoming Careers Fest. We have even more exhibitors this year both new and old attending our consortium event on Thursday 25th January 2018 from 3.00pm - 6.30pm at Epping Forest College. The Careers Fest is for parents and students in year 9 through to Year 13. The Careers Fest gives students in year 9 the opportunity to find out about future career pathways and to consider their option choices and subjects they wish to take in year 10. The information and advice available on the evening is very important for students in Years 10, 11, 12 and 13 who are making decisions about careers and further education. It is an opportunity to network and talk to future sixth forms, colleges, universities and employers. Apprenticeship providers will also be present. In the past students have secured work experience placements and networked with potential future employers. It is a very important evening to attend. Following last year’s event a Year 10 student told me, ‘I had no idea about pathways in the construction industry and after a conversation with an employer I am now keen to pursue a career in Quantity Surveying’. This student was offered a work experience placement and now considering a Higher Level Apprenticeship at 18.

I will be present throughout the event and I look forward to welcoming you there. Please sign in on entry to the college, collect a detailed information booklet of where all the stands will be and find out as much as you can.

This will be our ninth consortium careers fair held at Epping Forest College, every year it has been a very professional and successful event and this year there are many new exhibitors attending including lots of new national and local employers as well as local sixth forms, colleges and universities. Further details will be coming home via email and with students next week. Please make sure you attend, it is such a great opportunity to network, get details for future careers and even organise possible work experience placements.

Application Deadlines Roding Valley Sixth Form: Tuesday 23rd January 2018. All applications to other sixth forms and colleges need to be sent direct to them by their deadline dates. If applications need a reference please ask students to come and see me.

If you require any further information or advice please contact me;

Children need to have 2 types of revision timetables:

1

Timetable 1: For school days Timetable 2: For the Weekend/Holiday/Study Leave The timetable needs to be realistic. Research shows it is best to work on a 3:1:1 Ratio (for every 30 minutes of work, they need 10 minutes of ‘play’ and 10 minutes of rest. How do we remember or forget things?! When we learn something, we will forget it. When we revisit something we’ve learned repeatedly, we remember it better! This is shown in the Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve below:

2

Interleave Revision When we structure our revision, it is better to interleave topics as opposed to blocking topics. “Blocking” your revision – focusing on one topic for a long time then moving on to the next topic – is inefficient. “Interleaving” your revision is far more effective.

3

Be Specific! For interleaving to work, you have to break down your revision into “chunks,” be specific as it is best to deal with each element or topic of the course.

Mr. K Ali Assistant Headteacher.

Monday 18 December; 21 Year 7 students visited the Centre of the Cell in Whitechapel. The day consisted of observing cells, organs, learning about hygiene and the advance in scientific technology. Students also had the opportunity to play interactive games. The day was fun filled, with many students being inspired to choose careers such as a Heart Surgeon, an Oncologist, and a Dietician to name a few. The visit also consisted of looking at cancerous cells, observing the liver and the human brain. There were interactive games which allowed the students to see the world of cells. The students really did enjoy themselves! What a wonderful way to end the year! The students were a pleasure to spend the day with!

The aim of today was to broaden subject expertise and highlight the wonderful opportunities there are in a scientific career. Throughout the whole day we did activities and did interactive games based around the wonderful world of cells, the human body and medical research all based in a pod suspended over laboratories. One of the activities, which I really enjoyed, was to explore the microscopic view of healthy tissues and cancer tissues. This made me consider studying cancer cells in future for my higher studies. I also played various games based on health and hygiene. Aliza Batool, 7T

On Monday the 18 of December; Mrs. Patel and Mr. Ryan took us on a trip to the Centre of the Cell. I really enjoyed the trip because I learnt loads of new things about cells. We got to play interactive games about cells. Abigail Akers, 7T.

Mrs. S Patel Science Teacher / STEM coordinator.

As our Year 12 Geographers begin their new topics for their study of A-Level Geography, we spent a day in London focusing on the development of London and areas of regeneration taking place in the city on our doorstep. We started by visiting The Building Centre, home of New London Architecture, and explored their London model. This model (shown below) made us realize just how vast our city is and we spent some time studying it. The model shows the thousands upon thousands of buildings in London and interestingly, those in white are those that have been built (or are planned) since 2012. It really is astonishing how much the city of London is continuing to grow!

Following this, we walked to the studios of a key London architecture firm to listen to a seminar discussing this idea of regeneration in more detail. Our Year 12s listened intently and had an opportunity to experience what a University level seminar is like. The final part of our day involved us returning to the Building Centre to work in groups and design a regeneration project for Stratford Town Centre. The students had to consider what the priorities would be for a regeneration project in this area and local councils and stakeholders might go ahead organizing something like this.

A great day was had by all and learning about regeneration in context has certainly engaged the Years 12 in their new topic!

Miss K Stocking Geography Teacher.

SMSC: ROADSTER (The importance of road safety) On Wednesday 17th January, we are collapsing our Year 12’s timetable for them to take part in an exciting in-house all-day event, called “Roadster”. The Essex “Roadster” is a one day comprehensive programme of exciting activities and exercises for young people considering their travel options: Risks & Consequences Driving with Grace Drugs & Driving Distractions / Traffic Quiz The action-packed programme will make young people aware of the costs and responsibilities associated with driving. This is a compulsory day activity and an important part of our SMSC provision. Students will start off in the hall and then have a carousel of sessions throughout the day. This will be an excellent day.

Learning in a Different Way In the Sixth Form Assembly and in form times we launched FUTURE LEARN this week. https://www.futurelearn.com FutureLearn offers you a powerful new way to learn online. Every course has been designed according to principles of effective learning, through storytelling, discussion, visible learning, and using community support to celebrate progress. FutureLearn, the Open University's long awaited online learning platform, has finally gone live with great fanfare and partnerships with some of the UK's top universities. It's an exciting addition to a growing series of online ventures across the globe that are providing education to a mass audience, free-of-charge. We are encouraging all our Sixth Form in form time and study period to try a FUTURE LEARN course. Those that completed the course can get a certificate and some universities and higher level apprenticeships are now starting to accept FUTURE LEARN credits.

Sixth Form Parents Evening We would like to invite you to the Sixth Form Parents’ Evening which is to be held on Tuesday 23rd January. You will be able to meet your son/daughter’s subject staff and to discuss their progress to date. Appointments will take place between 4.30pm and 7pm in the English and Modern Foreign Language corridor. Your son/daughter will have an appointment sheet, and they should be encouraged to get appointments direct from A-level subject staff. These appointments last for ten minutes, and your son/daughter is asked to accompany you to this evening as the discussions provide useful additional feedback to help them progress this year. Students should wear smart business dress. Students should aim to factor in time to visit the main hall so that they do not miss out on opportunities on offer. We hope you will have an enjoyable and informative evening and I look forward to meeting you.

Many thanks to the Sixth Form volunteers at the Year 9 Parents Evening.

Mr L. Harris Head of Sixth Form

School Communications: We have been communicating by email for over a year now in a bid to get information to you quicker and more cost effectively. We found, however, our previous parental communication system did not give the functionality that people expect from smart phone apps today. So the school has invested in a new communication system call RS Connect Ed and with this comes a shiny new App.

MyEd is the free parent app that gives you a multitude of communication and information features to stay in touch with what is going on at school. The app gives you direct access to your child's attendance, timetable, absence records, achievements, behaviour and much, much more. You will also see that we update and change the information in the app as the school year moves along. Click here to see a short video about the app We are able to send you messages directly to the MyEd app relating to important information about your child's education and to remind you of events that are taking place at school. We can also embed links to regularly used systems, for example ParentPay & Doddle so you can keep everything in one place. You will receive a notification if we send you a message and there is no charge for the messages you send to us. The App can be downloaded by anyone and they will have access to information also available on our website Only parents will be able to access their own student’s information as long as we have the email address and mobile number you are using to access the App. Everyone will be able to see image to the left. But only parents of students in the school will be able to access this when clicking on the My Students tab.The MyEd app is available for both Apple iOS and Android devices and can be found using the links below: Step 1 - Go to your App Store Step 2 - Search for My Ed Step 3 - Download the Free app Apple iOS App Google Android App Once you have installed and opened MyEd, search for Roding Valley High School and follow the simple instructions to identify yourself. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you are having any problems and we will help you get set up.
