RVHS Parent Bulletin Aspiration
Respect Endeavour
Week ending: Friday 15th June 2018 “Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.
Message from the Head of School It has been another busy, exciting and productive week at RVHS. On Monday we welcomed back our Year 12 students to continue their A Level studies following their AS Internal and External examinations. We are confident their hard work will reap rewards and are excited to have them back in school. On Wednesday, it was our pleasure to welcome Ray James CBE, National Director Learning Disability, to speak to a number of students promoting careers in the NHS. He spoke about the vast number of career opportunities in the NHS including doctors, nurses, midwives, paramedics, dentists and many more, as well as inspiring young people to take up science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects. He said: "I really enjoyed the opportunity to talk with and listen to students, sharing how three generations of my family have very different roles in the NHS". I'm sure he will have inspired many of our students. A number of RVHS teachers have been out in the local community this week leading specialist teaching sessions at our local primary schools. It is great to work so closely with local schools and have the opportunity to share our teaching skills and resources with Year 5 and 6 pupils. We look forward to welcoming many of these students in September as our new Year 7s. Our own teaching staff also had the opportunity to share good practice this week in an after school CPD session which highlighted how much excellent work is being done to promote the accelerated progress of our pupils across all of our Year groups. At Roding Valley High School, we are constantly striving to improve the level of education and all round experience that we offer our students. As parents your feedback is vital in us being able to self-evaluate and make changes to move forward where needed. Please could you spare 5 minutes to complete our Parent Feedback Questionnaire The questionnaire is anonymous but if you specifically want a response to the comments made then you would need to leave your email or phone number.

Today, Miss Dyer and all of our newly appointed House Captains and Deputies participated in workshops planning all of the house activities in anticipation of the big launch.
It was an absolutely fantastic day, the students have spent time bonding in their teams and planning their first assemblies ready for the first major event Sports Day.
It was a pleasure to spend time with such a fantastic bunch of young people who are all so excited about their new role and the opportunities they can offer other students in the school We are now coming to the end of the GCSE exam session for 2018 and I wish all our GCSE students a wonderful summer holiday. We look forward to seeing them for their final assembly and the much awaited prom! I hope to see many of you here tonight for our PTA Pamper and Beauty Evening, which begins at 7pm. Enjoy the sunshine!

In Years 7 to 9; pupils ‘Drop Everything and Read’ for 20 minutes in every school day. Strong literacy is key to success in all subject areas and reading each day promotes this. Reading regularly improves spelling, punctuation and grammar, all of which are assessed in a number of subject areas on the new 9-1 specifications. We also want to encourage a love of reading for pleasure and have asked our Year 7s to write book reviews to share with you what they are reading during DEAR Time. This week we feature 3 reviews from 7S. Enjoy!
Dear DEAR, Crooked House is a thrilling murder mystery that follows Detective Cherves on his quest to solve the poisoning of the mysterious Mr Leonides. This roller coaster of a book is full of twists, turns and loops. You never know what is going to happen next. Agatha Christie has done it again, although Mr. Cherves is a bit confusing. If you decide to read this book, just remember, no one is safe in the little crooked house.
Written by Henry Foster 7U Dear DEAR, The Curious Incident of the Dog at Nighttime This book is truly beautiful, funny as well as sad. We embark on the adventure of an autistic boy called Christopher Boone. Christopher knows so much about Maths and he knows very little about human contact. When he finds out a dog was killed. He goes beyond his own street by himself to find the murderer. Written by Alicia Acheampong 7U
Dear Dear, I am reading Skullduggery Pleasant; Playing with Fire. It is the second book in the series of 9 books. It is a great book if you like action and thriller; it also has a splash of comedy. The main characters have magic powers, so it is a fantasy. Written by Nancy Tabram 7U

RVHS Sixth Form Roding Valley Students Inspired to Take Up Careers in the NHS as Senior NHS Leader Heads Back to the Classroom As part of plans to mark the NHS’s 70th birthday in July, Ray James CBE, National Director Learning Disability, returned to the classroom to promote careers in the NHS. He attended Roding Valley High School to talk about the vast number of career opportunities in the NHS including; Doctors, Nurses, Midwives, Paramedics, Dentists and many more, as well as inspiring young people to take up Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects. Ray has worked in health and social care for 34 years and recently received a C.B.E. in the 2018 New Year’s honours’ list. He said: “I really enjoyed the opportunity to talk with and listen to students, sharing how three generations of my family have very different roles in the NHS. I hope that many of the students will have been encouraged to think about a wide range of future careers in health and care settings and the difference they can make to people’s lives.” Mr. Harris, Head of Sixth Form, a Senior Leader at Roding Valley, and a teaching professional since 1996, said; “It was an honour to host Ray at Roding Valley this afternoon, it is vital that the voice of the NHS continues to be heard. The NHS is at the heart of this country, and it is crucial we use guest speakers such as Ray to inspire future generations.” The NHS is the country’s largest employer offering more than 350 types of profession, many requiring STEM qualifications. However, only one in four secondary school students choose two STEM A-Levels, and only one in 11 choose Maths and Physics. Roding Valley actively promote STEM and the sciences at every opportunity. Simon Stevens, Chief Executive of NHS England said: “As the NHS turns 70 this year, we can rightly be proud of the enormous contribution it has made to our country”. “But it is absolutely vital we inspire young people to think about working in the NHS and to take up the vital STEM subjects that will equip them for rewarding careers in the future workforce of the NHS.” Earlier this year NHS England and NHS Improvement joined forces with the charity Speakers for School. The collaboration is giving school pupils access to insights and advice from individuals who are at the top of the health profession, helping broaden students’ horizons for what they can achieve. The campaign is part of plans to mark the NHS’s 70th birthday with well-known media medics and other high-profile speakers volunteering their time to visit secondary schools and colleges in England this summer to help recruit the workforce of the future.

At RVHS, we use Show My Homework; an account has been created for you to keep up to date with your child’s homework progress from home.
What is ‘Show My Homework’? Show my Homework is a simple online solution for students and parents to view homework details and upcoming deadlines. Mobile apps and notifications ensure you always know what homework your child has and when it’s due.
How to Log In? Go to www.showmyhomework.co.uk/pin What are PINs? PINs are unique codes that ‘Show My Homework’ has assigned to each parent that allow us to confirm their identity on initial login. After logging in for the first time users will be asked to provide more memorable login details for future use. PINs are then only be used as a backup in case you forget these logins.
Or you can download the app. Enter your PIN details that you have been given in the letter provided by your school. Click ‘Log in’ Create a memorable password and enter your email address then click ‘Update you details’.
Students do not need a pin to be able to access their homework. They can gain access to their Show My Homework account though their Gmail account.
You are now able to access your account and view all the homework that has been set for your child. If yourself or your child experience any difficulties with using ‘Show my Homework’ or you no longer have your pin, please contact Mrs. Hodges: jhodges@rodingvalley.net

Whatis DODDLE? Doddle provides students with access to thousands of engaging, formative resources and guides students through the curriculum. Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature. Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision. Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned. These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.
Find out how to create a Doddle Parent account and then link that account to your child with this short video:

School Communications: We have been communicating by email for over a year now in a bid to get information to you quicker and more cost effectively. We found, however, our previous parental communication system did not give the functionality that people expect from smart phone apps today. So the school has invested in a new communication system call RS Connect Ed and with this comes a shiny new App.
MyEd is the free parent app that gives you a multitude of communication and information features to stay in touch with what is going on at school. The app gives you direct access to your child's attendance, timetable, absence records, achievements, behaviour and much, much more. You will also see that we update and change the information in the app as the school year moves along. Click here to see a short video about the app We are able to send you messages directly to the MyEd app relating to important information about your child's education and to remind you of events that are taking place at school. We can also embed links to regularly used systems, for example ParentPay & Doddle so you can keep everything in one place. You will receive a notification if we send you a message and there is no charge for the messages you send to us. The App can be downloaded by anyone and they will have access to information also available on our website Only parents will be able to access their own student’s information as long as we have the email address and mobile number you are using to access the App. Everyone will be able to see image to the left. But only parents of students in the school will be able to access this when clicking on the My Students tab.The MyEd app is available for both Apple iOS and Android devices and can be found using the links below: Step 1 - Go to your App Store Step 2 - Search for My Ed Step 3 - Download the Free app Apple iOS App Google Android App Once you have installed and opened MyEd, search for Roding Valley High School and follow the simple instructions to identify yourself. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you are having any problems and we will help you get set up.
