RVHS Parent Bulletin Aspiration Respect Endeavour Week ending: Friday 16th March 2018 “Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.”

Message from the Head of School I am delighted to announce that following some outstanding applications, interviews and presentations, Harry Boyd-Walker has been appointed Head Boy and Grace Cain has been appointed Head Girl. I am absolutely delighted with these appointments and know that they will be fantastic in their new roles. I would at this point like to thank our retiring Head Boy, Matthew Tinker and Head Girl, Lauren Humphries for their amazing work and the legacy that they have created within the sixth form. They have ably led a Student Executive Committee and helped shape the future of the school council and sixth form led activities. I am immensely proud of their work and wish them both every success in their career choices. Due to the outstanding quality of the applications received, their innovative ideas and the upcoming house leadership interviews we have offered the following leadership positions on the Student Executive:  House Liaison Lead: Leia Humphries  Environment Lead: Angel Dean  Charities Lead: Sophie Ellicock-Williams  Digital Director: Kevin Turner  Social Inclusion Lead: Ben Botterman  Subject Prefect and Creativity Lead: Alice Redknap  Reading Mentor Lead: Imogen Riordan  Lower School Mentoring Lead: Abbie Juniper  Upper School Mentoring Lead: Rachel Opoku-Manu Congratulations to all of these students and I will announce the House Captains next week. These interviews were held all day today and I am so pleased that 37 students put themselves forward to be a House Captain. Our students are the strength of the school and a real credit to us all. Thank you to all the Year 8 parents who attended the parent consultations. It was a very positive evening with very high attendance; the students are making very good progress. Please do look at the attached BBC News report prepared by our very talented year 8s with Mr. Ryan. Your ongoing support is greatly appreciated. The PPEs are ongoing and the students have all taken a very mature and purposeful approach to these exams. I am very appreciative of the parental support at this stressful time and if you have any concerns please do make them known to the school. Can I remind parents that Smart Watches or similar are not allowed in the exam hall. Please also note the email sent out to Year 12/13 parents regarding the study leave arrangements during this period.

I trust that all students have brought home their school photographs and that you like the new style. Please respond directly to the company to order, but note that there is free delivery to the school if ordered before the 31st March. I am delighted to announce that Miss Bates has been promoted to Second in English Faculty and that Mrs Harris (Head of Drama) has had her baby. Her gorgeous baby boy was born before he was expected but both are now doing really well. Mr Wilson is due to start with us after Easter as originally planned. It is a sad fact that many teenagers are suffering with mental health issues and I would like to invite all parents to attend the Parents’ Forum on Monday 19th March at 6pm. This session will focus on teenage mental health, we will share some of the resources that we have previously shared with students and offer some practical help and advice. It will held in the Sixth Form Study Centre so please arrive by the Brook Road entrance. I would like to thank Mr Harris and Mrs Daly for leading the Year 11/12/13 Duke of Edinburgh Silver expedition last weekend. The expedition went to Tring and they trekked over 60km over a 3 day period. The team developed crucial life skills including how to camp, improve resilience and show leadership. I understand all skills were tested to the limit. Unfortunately, due to the weather warnings this weekend, the Year 9 and 10 Bronze Expedition to Skreens Park will now take place next weekend. I cannot believe snow is forecast again!! Wishing everyone a good weekend

Ms. S Jenner Head of School

On the week beginning Monday 5th of March, Sixth Form students studying science created an assembly in order to inform Years 7 to 10 about British Science Week, and the importance of it; and inspire them to pursue a future in this subject.

The presentation - delivered by Jamie Henderson, Grace Cain, Tommy Coppin, Rachael Opoku-Manu, Jasmin Spall, and Igor Dasuzhau; included several key areas of science which have been developed greatly in recent times, such as Technology, Medicine and Space. Several students in each year group also received awards, commending them for their hard work and attitude to learning in science lessons.

This week students participated in several different experiments in their science lessons, such as a bottle rocket, and making different coloured flames using different elements of the periodic table.

National Citizen Service will be returning to Roding Valley High School on March 20th to hand out Free T-Shirts to all Year 11 students who have signed up for NCS this summer. National Citizen Service (NCS) is a once–in-a-lifetime opportunity open to all Year 11 and 12 students – it’s great fun and a fantastic way to build the skills and experiences needed to help young people stand out in job and university applications. They’ll take on new challenges and adventures, making new friends, learning new skills and giving something back to their community. Along with thousands of other people their age across Essex, they’ll spend time away from home doing outdoor challenges, meeting new people and building their confidence. They’ll build skills with local businesses and charities, whether that’s interview skills or first aid, or learning about issues in their community. Using all their new skills they’ll also create their own community project to benefit your local area. At the end of it they’ll graduate at a special ceremony and receive a certificate signed by the Prime Minister to recognise their achievements. NCS is valued by employers and universities – it’s recognised by UCAS and looks great on CVs. Plus, it’s great fun – they’ll make life-long friends and develop their confidence. Over 98% of those who took part in the programme last year would recommend it to their friends and 92% of participants said that they’d developed more skills for the future. NCS takes place during the summer holidays. More than 300,000 young people have taken part so far in NCS, giving them valuable life skills and unforgettable experiences. We have a range of dates available for you to choose from. It costs a maximum of £50 to take part or £20 if you get Free School Meals or are eligible for our bursary. NCS is delivered in your area by: Harlow College. To see what people have been getting up to on NCS, don’t forget to like us on facebook.com/NCS, follow us on Twitter @NCS or subscribe to the NCSYes channel on YouTube. To find out more or to get signed up visit: ncsingeus.co.uk or call 0121 386 6910.

What is DODDLE? Doddle provides students with access to thousands of engaging, formative resources and guides students through the curriculum. Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature. Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision. Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned. These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.

Find out how to create a Doddle Parent account and then link that account to your child with this short video:

School Communications: We have been communicating by email for over a year now in a bid to get information to you quicker and more cost effectively. We found, however, our previous parental communication system did not give the functionality that people expect from smart phone apps today. So the school has invested in a new communication system call RS Connect Ed and with this comes a shiny new App.

MyEd is the free parent app that gives you a multitude of communication and information features to stay in touch with what is going on at school. The app gives you direct access to your child's attendance, timetable, absence records, achievements, behaviour and much, much more. You will also see that we update and change the information in the app as the school year moves along. Click here to see a short video about the app We are able to send you messages directly to the MyEd app relating to important information about your child's education and to remind you of events that are taking place at school. We can also embed links to regularly used systems, for example ParentPay & Doddle so you can keep everything in one place. You will receive a notification if we send you a message and there is no charge for the messages you send to us. The App can be downloaded by anyone and they will have access to information also available on our website Only parents will be able to access their own student’s information as long as we have the email address and mobile number you are using to access the App. Everyone will be able to see image to the left. But only parents of students in the school will be able to access this when clicking on the My Students tab.The MyEd app is available for both Apple iOS and Android devices and can be found using the links below: Step 1 - Go to your App Store Step 2 - Search for My Ed Step 3 - Download the Free app Apple iOS App Google Android App Once you have installed and opened MyEd, search for Roding Valley High School and follow the simple instructions to identify yourself. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you are having any problems and we will help you get set up.
