Week ending: Friday 16 November 2018 “Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.”
Message from the Head of School This week we were delighted to welcome so many potential students to our Sixth Form Open Evening. Our Sixth Form continues to go from strength to strength, enjoying significantly improved A level results in 2018 which compare positively with other local providers. Our progress rates are also significantly improved and are in line with national expectations. It was an incredibly positive evening with so many of our Year 11 students keen to explore the options at A level and hear about the exciting opportunities available to them post 18. I am delighted that Miss Wheaton, our recently appointed Director of Sixth Form is having a very positive impact on our Sixth Form, offering enhanced rigour, support and opportunities for our students. There were a significant number of external students in attendance, further evidence of our growing reputation and the competition for places. Our Year 11 are continuing to impress, having stepped up to the challenge of their PPEs (pre public exams); their attitude and effort have been exemplary.

In Years 7 to 9; pupils ‘Drop Everything and Read’ for 20 minutes in every school day. Strong literacy is key to success in all subject areas and reading each day promotes this. Reading regularly improves spelling, punctuation and grammar, all of which are assessed in a number of subject areas on the new 9-1 specifications. We also want to encourage a love of reading for pleasure and have asked our Year 7s to write book reviews to share with you what they are reading during DEAR Time.
‘Girl Online’ by Zoe Sugg Plot Summary Noah invites Penny on his European music tour; she can’t wait to spend time with her rock-good-tastic boyfriend. But between Noah’s jam-packed schedule, less-than welcoming bandmates, and threatening messages from jealous fans, Penny wonders whether she is cut out for life on tour. She can’t help but miss her family, her best friend Eliot and her blog Girl Online. My Opinion of the Book I like the book because it’s about her in school at first but then goes on tour and does lots of other journeys. It is good because it is an autobiography and it says her reaction. I like these books better than when it’s a storyteller telling things about the characters. My Recommendations I rate this 10 because it is really good and an interesting read. It is also really funny. I would rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. Written by Hannah Carter 7U
‘Of Mice and Men’ by John Steinbeck. Plot Summary The book is about men that travel over the country to find a good job and to have a nice home. When tragic and sad things happen, anger and mysteriousness occur in the book ‘Of Mice and Men’. My Opinion of the Book This is my favourite book so far because it is a cliff hanger and it is a beautiful and sad story. My Recommendations I recommend this book for people who like tragic, adventurous stories. Written by Thais Alberto

‘Cookie’ by Jacqueline Wilson Plot Summary The book is about a girl named Beauty, but she does not think she is beautiful. So she thinks it’s a dumb name. She gets teased at school, home is not much better, she has a lovely mum, but her dad gets angry at nothing. My Opinion of the Book It’s a good book because it represents life and it shows you how it feels to be picked on and why you should not do it. My Recommendations I would rate this a 10/10 because it is very interesting and shows you what it is like to be picked on and why you should not do it to others. Written by Havannah Wilson- Bryan
‘The Diamond Girls’ by Jacqueline Wilson Plot Summary Dixie, Rochelle, Jude, Martine and their Mum live together and move out to what the thought would be a beautiful house in the country side, but in reality it is a terrible house and is run down. Mum then comes home with the baby, even though the house is not sorted. My Opinion of the Book My opinion of the book is very good. It is very interesting and you cannot stop reading it. It is a cliff hanger, especially near the middle to the end. It is one of the best books I have ever read. My Recommendations I would really recommend this book because it is good for people who like cliff hangers. It’s a 9.5 /10. Written by Sara Olszewska 7U
‘The Midnight Gang’ by David Walliams Plot Summary This book is about aging, who are in the hospital and have a long time till they can come out, because they are stuck in hospital. So they make a gang called the Midnight Gang. At midnight in the hospital they go down to the basement and begin their adventures. My Opinion of the Book This book is a page turner; you never know what is happening next. I love reading David Walliam’s books, as they put a smile on my face. My favourite David Walliam’s book is ‘World Worst Children 2’. My Recommendations I rate this book 4/5 stars only because I have just started it. This is for ages 9 to 14. One Two Three Four 23 million. Row upon row Line after line They stretch past the horizon And back. Nameless Faceless With petals the colour of blood And cold, black hearts That ceased to beat Long ago. We wear them. Pin their blank faces to our uniforms To prove that we Remember. Remember to put some money in a box and Pick up a paper flower So we can stand outside and Pretend To look respectful. While we’re really more worried about being Fowled on by seagulls. Unknown. That was all they were. Unknown soldiers Fallen Into unknown mass graves. Nobody there to close their eyes They stared Unseeing At the sky The sky that they could never hope To reach. They were not robots. Not emotionless Not blank. They laughed as you laugh They lived as you live They feared As you fear.
Please, feel free to raise your hand If you have fired a gun. If you have feared for your own life While your friends fall around you. If you have returned home Only to find That there is no one left To greet you. If you have suffered through war And have brought back the scars to prove it. Scars. The signs that something has been Broken And not completely fixed. People are So fragile So easily fractured. Not just their bodies but their minds. So many Young and old Returned Not quite as they left. Witnessing that Being a part of that Can hurt So much more Than any wound And so they stand In their scarlet uniforms and Tight formations Looking out towards The sun. Living In the fields where So many died. They grow Tall and proud As war is such a great fertiliser. But Don’t worry Don’t fret; It’ll all be over by Christmas
Twelve Was the youngest British soldier. So young And so very, very small. Too small To see over the edge Of a trench.

On Wednesday, the Year 9 students took part in the “Prisoner Me? No Way!!” Event. ‘Prison Me! No-Way!’ is a national educational charity with a core aim of raising awareness among young people about the causes, consequences and penalties of crime
The day consisted of workshops, visit to a cell, a former prisoner insight and how to stay safe in this troubled world. They also looked at First Aid, rail safety and what it is like to be inhibited by reduced faculties.
The students were impeccably well behaved and encouraged to discuss various situations and how the law affects their life. They also were given an insight into how the choices that they make may impact on their future.

At RVHS, we use Show My Homework; an account has been created for you to keep up to date with your child’s homework progress from home.
What is ‘Show My Homework’? Show my Homework is a simple online solution for students and parents to view homework details and upcoming deadlines. Mobile apps and notifications ensure you always know what homework your child has and when it’s due. How to Log In? Go to www.showmyhomework.co.uk/pin What are PINs? PINs are unique codes that ‘Show My Homework’ has assigned to each parent that allow us to confirm their identity on initial login. After logging in for the first time users will be asked to provide more memorable login details for future use. PINs are then only be used as a backup in case you forget these logins.
Or you can download the app. Enter your PIN details that you have been given in the letter provided by your school. Click ‘Log in’ Create a memorable password and enter your email address then click ‘Update you details’.
Students do not need a pin to be able to access their homework. They can gain access to their Show My Homework account though their Gmail account.
You are now able to access your account and view all the homework that has been set for your child. If yourself or your child experience any difficulties with using ‘Show my Homework’ or you no longer have your pin, please contact Mrs. Hodges: jhodges@rodingvalley.net

What is DODDLE? Doddle provides students with access to thousands of engaging, formative resources and guides students through the curriculum. Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature. Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision.
Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned. These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.
Find out how to create a Doddle Parent account and then link that account to your child with this short video:
We have also included a link to a very useful guide on how to view your child's due and submitted homework:

School Communications: We have been communicating by email for over a year now in a bid to get information to you quicker and more cost effectively. We found, however, our previous parental communication system did not give the functionality that people expect from smart phone apps today. So the school has invested in a new communication system call RS Connect Ed and with this comes a shiny new App.
MyEd is the free parent app that gives you a multitude of communication and information features to stay in touch with what is going on at school. The app gives you direct access to your child's attendance, timetable, absence records, achievements, behaviour and much, much more. You will also see that we update and change the information in the app as the school year moves along. Click here to see a short video about the app We are able to send you messages directly to the MyEd app relating to important information about your child's education and to remind you of events that are taking place at school. We can also embed links to regularly used systems, for example ParentPay & Doddle so you can keep everything in one place. You will receive a notification if we send you a message and there is no charge for the messages you send to us. The App can be downloaded by anyone and they will have access to information also available on our website. Only parents will be able to access their own student’s information as long as we have the email address and mobile number you are using to access the App.
But only parents of students in the school will be able to access this when clicking on the My Students tab. The MyEd app is available for both Apple iOS and Android devices and can be found using the links below: Step 1 - Go to your App Store Step 2 - Search for My Ed Step 3 - Download the Free app Apple iOS App Google Android App Once you have installed and opened MyEd, search for Roding Valley High School and follow the simple instructions to identify yourself.
