RVHS Parent Bulletin Aspiration
Respect Endeavour
Week ending: Friday 18th May 2018 “Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.”
Message from the Head of School Today we said goodbye to our Year 11s. From today, they will only be in school for their GCSE exams and planned revision classes. Classes are still ongoing for our Year 13s as the A levels do not begin until after half term. The teachers at Roding Valley High School really do go the extra mile to support the students; there are revision sessions for targeted Maths groups to be held this Saturday. If your child has been invited then please ensure that they attend. During half term there is also a full programme of additional support and revision classes being held, the timetable is included later on in the bulletin. We really want every student to achieve their potential. I am also delighted to announce the new House names and colours. This has been a long process and there were many entrants and numerous suggestions from the student and local community. We have already appointed our House Captains from the student body and Eleanor Laing, MP was involved in the final selection. The House names and colours are:
Churchill House: Yellow Hawking House: Blue Pankhurst House: Purple Rendell House: Red Murray House: Green This is a really exciting development in the future of Roding Valley High School and will allow for more interaction across the year groups, a sense of identity and increased ‘healthy’ competition within the school. The House Captain roles have also created leadership opportunities for our students and they will be role models, which our younger students can aspire to be. There will be more information to follow next week and the students will be told which house they are in. There will be launch after half term and the students will represent their Houses at the Sports Day in July. From September 2018, all students (including the girls) will wear ties which will have the school emblem coloured to represent their house. All siblings will be in the same house. Students will have assemblies on the famous people behind the names and why they have been chosen. We are planning a House Day which will be an excellent opportunity to bond as a group and allow students to take part in activities including creating a house slogan, designing an emblem and planning house activities. Many thanks to Miss Dyer who has worked very hard organising this really exciting venture.

Year 7 For our year 7 students, this exam period has been an opportunity for them to begin to develop the skills necessary to succeed under exam conditions and become familiar with the exam process. I have seen some amazing work produced by our year group and on walking into Year 7 classes I see diligent, hardworking and dedicated students. This has been reflected this week and I am extremely proud of our Year 7’s for the consistently high standards they have demonstrated. They have conducted themselves extremely well and have been focused, well-equipped and motivated throughout. We look forward to seeing the continual hard work from such an amazing year group!

Our Year 7's took part in a Cooking Masterclass where they applied their knowledge and skills to making delicious pancakes. Lola Collings: “It was fun and exciting and I wish it could be a permanent club every week” Sam Labett: “Something went wrong, I learnt from it and I carried on creating some delicious chocolate sauce”. Milie Nusrat: “I learnt new skills and I really want it to be a permanent club!”
On Tuesday 15th May, 17 students visited Parliament. We were invited by our local MP, Eleanor Laing and given a tour of Westminster Hall, the House of Commons and the House of Lords. When we arrived, we were struck by the beauty of the Palace of Westminster, with its stunning outer design. We were greeted with a lovely Tour Guide, who showed us around. The whole place is so beautiful and we all felt inspired being around the statues of such inspirations as Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher. There was one left over pillar where a statue could be placed; maybe it might be one of us in the future. We all had a brilliant time and felt privileged that we were invited to come. Parliament is an exciting place and hopefully we will debate there in the future. Written By Ruby Coyte 7T

Congratulations to William Cratchley, who has done so well with his creative writing and has chosen to enter himself in a writing competition
Bruce had suffered from blindness since he was only 3 years old. This changed the way he felt about the world. Simple tasks became impossible and soon his struggles became unbearable. However, from these struggles came Solo, a young guide dog trained to help Bruce live his life. The pair had been together for 5 years now, but at the age of 45, Bruce's life changed forever... It all began on one normal Tuesday as the pair walked across the streets, Solo leading in front of him. They stopped at a road, the lights flashing red as their lives changed forever. Maybe it was the flash of the lights, or the anxiety that had built up in Bruce over the years, but reality shifted, pulling Solo's consciousness from his furry body. The two's minds merged and shifted, placing Bruce in Solo's body and Solo in Bruce's. The lead strapped to Bruce/guide dog broke free as Solo/man bounded across the street, his tongue hanging out of his mouth. Bruce lifted his paws as he realised his eye sight had been restored only then to see the terrible truth. Bruce fearfully searched the streets. Searching for help. Searching for his guide dog. Hiding from the fear of people, Bruce hunted for Solo in the dark of the night, terrified for the danger he could be in. He slept in a park each night until eventually he was taken in by animal protection workers, who nursed him back to full health and gave him a home. Bruce tried to alert the workers of his humanity but all they could hear was barking and growling. He found hope as well as fear in the shelter, as he sought to find sense of his transformation. Yet the unknown remained undiscovered for Bruce as he tried to live this new life. Though the workers were kind and the shelter was warm, Bruce missed his dog, his loyal and loving friend. He cried for his friend who he feared was in need of help. Soon came the day of his adoption. He feared this day would come. The doors of his kennel opened and a strange man walked in. The man had a familiar scent to Bruce's dog body. As the figure pulled back his hood, Solo stood before him, in his body, smiling. "I'll take that one please," he announced as Bruce was lifted into his arms. The two embraced each other and the two walked home, Bruce in front leading him, guiding his best friend through the darkness. Though trapped in these new bodies, the pair were happy as their journey together was only just beginning............

At RVHS, we use Show My Homework; an account has been created for you to keep up to date with your child’s homework progress from home.
What is ‘Show My Homework’? Show my Homework is a simple online solution for students and parents to view homework details and upcoming deadlines. Mobile apps and notifications ensure you always know what homework your child has and when it’s due.
How to Log In? Go to www.showmyhomework.co.uk/pin What are PINs? PINs are unique codes that ‘Show My Homework’ has assigned to each parent that allow us to confirm their identity on initial login. After logging in for the first time users will be asked to provide more memorable login details for future use. PINs are then only be used as a backup in case you forget these logins.
Or you can download the app. Enter your PIN details that you have been given in the letter provided by your school. Click ‘Log in’ Create a memorable password and enter your email address then click ‘Update you details’.
Students do not need a pin to be able to access their homework. They can gain access to their Show My Homework account though their Gmail account.
You are now able to access your account and view all the homework that has been set for your child. If yourself or your child experience any difficulties with using ‘Show my Homework’ or you no longer have your pin, please contact Mrs. Hodges: jhodges@rodingvalley.net

Whatis DODDLE? Doddle provides students with access to thousands of engaging, formative resources and guides students through the curriculum. Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature. Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision. Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned. These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.
Find out how to create a Doddle Parent account and then link that account to your child with this short video:

School Communications: We have been communicating by email for over a year now in a bid to get information to you quicker and more cost effectively. We found, however, our previous parental communication system did not give the functionality that people expect from smart phone apps today. So the school has invested in a new communication system call RS Connect Ed and with this comes a shiny new App.
MyEd is the free parent app that gives you a multitude of communication and information features to stay in touch with what is going on at school. The app gives you direct access to your child's attendance, timetable, absence records, achievements, behaviour and much, much more. You will also see that we update and change the information in the app as the school year moves along. Click here to see a short video about the app We are able to send you messages directly to the MyEd app relating to important information about your child's education and to remind you of events that are taking place at school. We can also embed links to regularly used systems, for example ParentPay & Doddle so you can keep everything in one place. You will receive a notification if we send you a message and there is no charge for the messages you send to us. The App can be downloaded by anyone and they will have access to information also available on our website Only parents will be able to access their own student’s information as long as we have the email address and mobile number you are using to access the App. Everyone will be able to see image to the left. But only parents of students in the school will be able to access this when clicking on the My Students tab.The MyEd app is available for both Apple iOS and Android devices and can be found using the links below: Step 1 - Go to your App Store Step 2 - Search for My Ed Step 3 - Download the Free app Apple iOS App Google Android App Once you have installed and opened MyEd, search for Roding Valley High School and follow the simple instructions to identify yourself. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you are having any problems and we will help you get set up.
